Steven thinks Andy has been dead for years, the victim of a car accident. Andy thinks Steven abandoned him back when he was in a terrible wreck, leaving him alone during his long recovery. When they two of them experience a chance meeting in a bar, it's like the dead have come back to life, and like the past has come back to haunt them. While society mover and shaker Steven has never stopped loving Andy, carpenter Andy has learned to hate his ex-lover, thinking the worst. Steven tracks Andy down, both of them realizing they've been the victim of lies and deceit. Can Andy learn to love Steven again, or is it too late for the pair to start over?
Often referred to as "Space Cowboy" and "Gangsta of Love" while still striving for the moniker of "Maurice," Sean Michael spends his days surfing, smutting, organizing his immense gourd collection and fantasizing about one day retiring on a small secluded island peopled entirely by horseshoe crabs. While collecting vast amounts of vintage gay pulp novels and mood rings, Sean whiles away the hours between dropping the f-bomb and persuing the kama sutra by channeling the long lost spirit of John Wayne and singing along with the soundtrack to "Chicago."
A long-time writer of complicated haiku, currently Sean is attempting to learn the advanced arts of plate spinning and soap carving sex toys.
Barring any of that? He'll stick with writing his stories, thanks, and rubbing pretty bodies together to see if they spark.
Steven's hoping for a night out and a distraction. What he finds is a ghost.
Andy can't believe who walked into his regular bar, and oblivious even when the guy's hitting on him. Past can be a hard thing to let go of, especially when you're carrying its legacy.
After ten years, they come together pretty quick, but if you buy the true love, well, then it never dies. Both Andy and Steven haven't been the same since the accident, though Andy's had the hard road.
A lot of loving, cherishing, and needing as one expects from a Michael book. Once they find their way back together again there's no separating them. No conflict to speak of, but the hurt/comfort of reconnecting and acknowledging Andy's wounds is all love and validation.
Overall, a soothing salve where love makes life better.
~A copy was provided to me for a No Glitter Blown review~ ~~~Reviewed for Hearts On Fire Reviews~~~~
Losing a lover in a car accident is bad enough. Believing him dead for ten years only to find out your family deceived you into believing him dead is – unimaginably painful. This is the situation Steven faces, and it is pretty bad. But as soon as I realized what his partner Andy had been through, I honestly wasn’t sure which was worse. Andy was told that Steven was no longer interested in him, and had to go through excruciatingly painful physical recovery on his own, before beginning to put the rest of his life together again. In the end, I think both men suffered equally, and the only thing that will help them forget the pain is figuring out their future together.
The premise of this short is the most interesting thing of all: Andy thinks Steven is dead because that is what he was lead to believe, he even had a funeral for the man he loved and everything. Steven on the other hand was alive, in the hospital for nearly a year and in a great deal of pain and physical therapy after, thinking the whole time that Andy has abandoned him, having been told that Andy no longer wants to be with him.
Fast forward ten years, when a chance encounter brings them both back together.
Take out the numerous sex scenes in such a short novella [typical Sean Michael], and you have an okay story but [of course] lacking much in the way of plot. What I liked most of all was actually how the recognition was there, how when they meet again Andy is suddenly greatly attracted to this stranger he doesn't recognize - attracted in a way that he only every felt for Steven. Deep in a lot of Sean Michael's works is romance and love, connections that go beyond just the sex even though a great many of his things are nothing but scene after scene of erotica. It's that sort of forever-time-love that keeps making me come back to his stories, and why I continue to read new ones.
Ten years ago you lost the love of your life, you can't move on, and each Sunday finds you at his graveside with flowers. Then imagine walking into a bar and discovering that "dead" love sitting on the stool next to you. Sounds the makings of a really good read. It would have been if were longer and the emotions of the MCs fully explored.
Also, we never really discover the why of it all. Andy was told Steven couldn't stomach the idea of being with him after the car accident. Steven was told Andy died and his body was damaged beyond recognition. They know Steven's parents are to blame. These two should want a major showdown and some answers from Steven's parents. What we get is anticlimactic meeting and a rushed ending.
A great idea for a book but was never allowed to mature. We got a short story and too little plot, character development and interaction.
It was an okay read for me. More could have been done with the story to make it a much more touching and emotional read. This was more on the fluff side, which can be nice, but in my opinion, this wasn't done well. And for living only a few miles apart, to never once see each other in 10 years is somewhat far fetched. I would soooo love to get my hands on this story to help with a re-write, LOL! Oh, well - that's what my imagination is for. ;)
This was a short read with to many repeating lines, every page there is a line oh i'm so happy that you are still alive or oh i hated you for all those years, and i'm to ugly, bla bla bla, the blurb was good the cover is nice but the story is weak.
And there are still so many questions unanswered and i hate that in a book.
Andy and Stephen (Penny) get a second chance when they meet by chance in a bar, ten years AFTER the car accident that (Penny mistakenly believes) killed Andy.
I'm not quite sure why the subtitle is "The King of Pentacles" though. I know the King of Pentacles is a tarot card, but there's no mention of tarot readings in this book. Weird.
There is a lot of sex for such a short story but I knew that going in it’s a Sean Michael’s story after all and I was okay with that. I really liked the story idea but not the execution and I really liked the main characters. What I had a problem with is the repeated dialogue and the over use of one word in particular. “Yeah” is used in the story 78 times it drove me crazy and passages like this one made me want to scream…
“Eight years…I’ve missed ten years of your life, Andy.” Steven shook himself. “So how come you haven’t eaten pizza in eight years?”
“Heartburn, I guess. For a while I couldn’t walk easily, so answering the door sucked.” It had just sort of happened.
“Oh, that’s too bad.” Steven sighed softly. “Tell me what all was wrong from the accident.”
Steven has loved Andy with all his heart and soul for 10 years and after he finds out Andy is alive and mostly well all he can say to him is “Oh, that’s too bad.” Seriously? Shouldn’t he have been raging or crying or both?
This story needed much more time to develop it into the story it could have been. Just about everything felt rushed and incomplete, there are so many questions left unanswered but the foundation is there.
Even though I liked the premise and the characters it turned out to be a disappointing read.
I received a copy of this novel from the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review.
I think "second chance at love" novels are one of my favorite plots to read, and this one has a really fantastic twist: Steven's second chance comes after thinking that his lover has been dead for the last decade.
Steven and Andy's reunion, the misunderstandings, and the emotions are all fantastic! This is a story that really tugs on your heart, and makes you see how true love can survive!
While I think the plot was well-conceived, it was very rushed at the beginning and end. The initial meeting and conversation flew by, so there was enough time for the angst and conflict. The final climatic confrontation was also rushed. This is a novella that could have benefited a lot from being longer, showing more interaction between both men.
I personally struggle with novellas, but I think this is a really excellent read if you're looking for something short and emotional!
Out of the Past: The King of Pentacles by Sean Michael 3.5 stars M/M Second chance romance Triggers: poor ethics, death, depression I was given this book for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.
This book was somewhat bitter sweet for me. It was a fast moving, reconnection that was almost too fast. While I can understand that the characters knew each other previously, there had been several years that had passed. I think I would have liked the story more had they taken more time to learn each other again.
That being said, they had amazing chemistry and their encounters were steamy, gently and probably like riding a bike.
I wish that there had been more to the story when it came to the family aspect – it felt too clean and cut off for me. Really, there was no drama in the story, only the hint that there would be drama.
Too clean of a story – but it was a sweet second chance romance and for the length of the story, it was OK.

This was a good book. I loved the plot and storyline. Lovers who parted due to a tragic accident meet 10 years later and through persuasion by one get back together again. Sean Michael is one of my favorite authors and he never disappoints.
This was a great little book that can easily be read in one sitting. It has a lot of steam but also a great storyline. The power of love conquers all. It breaks through barriers and insecurities and brings life to the dead.
I also loved how Steven stood up to his parents for his love of Andy and they rode off into the sunset and lived happily ever after.
I do recommend this book. It has all the ingredients of a great story.

3.75* Ok, lots of sex, but it's a Sean Michael book so that's ok! :) But I liked the premise, Steven from a very affluent powerful family and his down to earth lover Andy. After an accident 10 yrs before Steven's family convinced him that Andy had died, but told Andy that Steven was done with him and not to come around again! Understandable when a coincidental meeting happens Andy is angry and leaves and poor Steven is sure he's seen a ghost, he's been grieving for years and Andy's been angry for years! After that it went pretty quickly and easily and lots of make up sex, but I still liked it.
This was a quick read, only 53 pages, but I’m constantly amazed what some authors can do with a short story. Sean Michael is one of those. It doesn’t seem to matter if it’s a full length novel or a short story Sean Michael can write it. I loved that Steven and Andy found their way back together and loved the HOT sex between them. I absolutely love the scene between Steven, Andy and Steven’s parents and absolutely loved the ending. Great job, my hats off to a really great author.

Out of the Past is all about second chances. Another opportunity with your soul mate who you thought was dead. A second chance with your lover who you thought had walked away from you during your darkest time. Fate tore them apart only to bring them back together 10 years later. Is love enough to overcome the pain of the past for that future they dreamed of so long ago? I fell in love with Andy and Steven's story. A must read.
This was a good short story. I really wish the book had been longer and more in depth. I feel like the book was too short and shallow for such serious subject matter.
Even though ten years has passed since a car accident killed Steven’s lover Andy, Steven hasn’t really moved on. He’s left his art behind and – just like his family wanted – joined in with the family business, but Steven remains alone, still mourning his lost lover. Only a chance encounter in a bar throws both Steven – and Andy’s – lives upside down, as Andy thought Steven had abandoned him, and Steven genuinely believed Andy had died. Can these two men rebuild their shattered lives and find a new way forward?
I found this to be a really emotional but strongly written short story. While the angst of Steven finding out his lover, Andy, wasn’t dead but he’d been betrayed into thinking so and mourning for a very long time is a lot to read I was pleased the author hammered all that out pretty much at the beginning of the story. There’s a lot of emotions and hurt for Andy and Steven both to come to grips with and I feel this could have really dragged the story as a whole down. I was so pleased when that wasn’t the case. Yes, there’s a lot of emotion and some angst and a few hurt and angry words, but this part of the story wasn’t extended longer than it needed to be and I feel it was really well handled – enough to be realistic and relatable, but not enough to be overly dramatic or feel like it was dwelled on.
I was grateful when Andy and Steven began to rebuild their relationship together. They both certainly still have scars and there’s a lot of work needed to be done, but it was clear they still deeply cared for each other and them both trying again was a lovely thing to read. I feel readers who enjoy this style of story will find it a quick and wonderful read, full of quite deep emotions and with two interesting, modern and very well drawn characters.
Steamy and wonderful, this was a lovely read and one I’ll enjoy again in the future.
I love the plat and it was well written I just wish there had been a bit more to it and that's why it is a bit more 3.5 to me. Both men were set up and lied to. And as it turns out neither one of them has really moved on either. But after years of thinking one was dead and the other had abandon them it seemed a lot to overcome in one night.
Pissed off! That’s what I felt when I stared reading this book. How could one’s own parents be so mean and cruel as to convince their son that his partner/lover/soul mate had died in a crash. How could they, or his own lawyer, be so heartless as to threaten a severely injured man with legal proceedings if he even attempted to contact his man after barely surviving a horrendous wreck that leaves him unable to even walk or talk. How could anyone be so totally heartless and cruel to two men who obviously loved each other with all their hearts. Well the rich think that they can get away with anything and they almost did. That was up until Steven Billings wandered into a small bar that just happened to be his “dead” lover’s watering hole.
Steven’s parents never thought that Andy Johnson was good enough to be with their son or would even amount to anything. Well Andy not only proved them wrong that he would just shrivel up and die or that he would simply just give up. He didn’t go back to college to become an architect but he did become a major home builder that was widely respected and sought after, for his quality homes he built.
I can’t imagine how either man could have survived this ordeal for ten long years but thankfully they met up, by accident, and Steven wasn’t going to let Andy ever slip through his fingers again. Andy might hate him but Steven never stopped loving and longing for Andy and he had enough love in him for the both of them.
I really loved Stephen’s love for his dead partner. For ten years he still visited his grave to place flowers on it each week. He had tried to move on but couldn’t. His love for Andy was too overwhelming. He couldn’t let go. Andy wanted to stay furious with Stephen but how can you hate someone who was duped by his parents and never stopped loving you. Their loving relationship was the glue that helped them survive a horrible injustice. It was a second chance love that was rewarding and poignant.
This is a short story that was an attention getter from the very beginning. I can’t imagine any parent being as cold-hearted as Steven’s. It’s not the way parents are suppose to be but, unfortunately, some are.
Sean Michael is one of my favourite authors, I’m not sure how I missed Out of the Past the first time it was released. So when I saw this second edition, the blurb and the cover caught my interest. I’m a sucker for second chance at love, I had to have it.
The story is very simple. Steven spent the last ten year mourning the love of his life Andy, killed by a terrible incident. He tried to move on but it was impossible, he still comes back to Andy grave each week. One night he walks in a pub and he is soon attracted to a man who then reveals to be Andy, his (supposed) dead lover. How is it possible? Steven buried his lover. Is there someone who is playing with his grief? Or maybe he was just betrayed by the most important person in his life.
What did really happen? Most of all can they overcome the hurt of the loss and be together again?
I’ll be honest, there isn’t a lot of development in the story, apart from knowing they will of course get their own HEA. They met, explanations were given, they were still in love with each other. There were a lot of sex scenes, hot and well done like only Sean can write. Nonetheless I liked this novellas because it was light and emotional too, sexy and well written, the main characters were delined just enough to let us know the important things. It was right, not overdone, not lacking. In a way I appreciated it wasn’t different and perhaps too heavy as it could have been if the author had chosen another writing path.
Out of the Past is a second chance at love story, made of hurt and loss, determination and hope to build a future who was took away from two men deeply in love after ten years of hell. I feel to recommend it.
The COVER ART by MelodyA. Pond is really great, I especially like the colors.
Ten years ago Steven’s life crashed around him when he found out his lover, Andy, had died in a car crash. So he is stunned and suspicious when he comes across a man that is eerily familiar and claims to be Andy. But once he is convinced that this man is his Andy, nothing will stop Steven from claiming Andy again as his own – not even Andy himself!
When Andy woke up from a coma to find his body broken, almost beyond repair he was flabbergasted to find out that his lover, Steven, who had professed undying love, walked away from him. But Andy slowly recovered and his anger at Steven was a great motivator. So when he comes across Steven again he is still hurt when Steven doesn’t recognize him but also stunned to learn that Steven had thought him dead all these years.
Now, to make this work Andy will need to let go of his anger at Steven and Steven will have to work at proving to Andy that his love for him never died.
Out of the Past is a heartwarming story about love lost and found, while also proving that true love will survive even after death. Steven and Andy are men that have been damaged by the actions of their families and the lies they were told to keep them apart. However, when they come together and choose to forget the past and its hurts in order to build a future, it is a quick, yet beautiful thing to see. As readers have come to expect Sean Michael delivers a story with well-drawn characters and passion hot enough to singe your fingers. Out of the Past is a great read full of love and passion perfect for readers who like their romance with a spice of angst ending in the perfect HEA.

~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Inked Rainbow Reads Review Team~ 5 stars for this M/M Oh man, this book gave me the feels. I can’t imagine what Steven went through losing the love of his life and then not being able to move on. Then to find out the guy is still alive, I would probably die of shock. When Andy sees Steven in the bar he knew that Steven was alive and well, he just thought Steven left him so he has hated him ever since the accident. What these two guys went through for ten years was something else, I can’t even imagine. You could tell the love was still there from the very start and you couldn’t help but cheer them on and hope they worked things out. This book had so much heart and I loved it.
Too short – I really wanted just a bit more of this incredibly sweet story. Steven and Andy were happy together when an accident happened, bad people interfered, and they were robbed of years of their lives as a couple. When they run into each other again after years of misery, the connection is instant. They still fit and it doesn’t take long for them to accept that they have gotten a second chance. I bought that. I really did. They were great together in what little we got to see in such a short story. I particularly liked that there was no ‘I’m- so-sorry,-let’s-leave-the-past-behind-us-and-move-on and yes-I-completely-forgive-you etc’ where the ‘bad guys’ are concerned. I hate it when that happens – some things are unforgivable.
This quick 50 plus page novella really drives home what a mother will do to keep a family together. Good/bad/ugly.
It really starts off by, some guy walks into a bar!
Two young loves are ripped apart and both lied to, problem is they we’re both so young, hurt and traumatized by the events neither one stopped and thought.
Now here we are years later, neither one never stopped loving one another, never stopped thinking. But one is scarred on the outside and one on the in.
It’s amazing how in just a few short pages we get a snap shot of the past, present and future of these two and what will happen when love wins. I was given a copy in exchange for an honest review by Crystals Many reviewers
Sean Michael has become an instant buy for me. I love Steven's reaction to finding Andy alive. He doesn't second guess or over think, he knows that he belongs with Andy. Andy's anger is understandable, but I liked that he's willing to listen. He's also honest about his feelings. He's spent a long time being hurt and believing a lie. My favorite part is that Steven isn't willing to let go of Andy now that he has him back. Andy can take his time coming to the place where he's willing to love again, but Steven is there and he's not leaving. Adult read
