GildedGirl

This year at Harbor University should have been a fresh start. My chance to finally get a taste of the independence I've craved for so long.

But one risky choice has caused me to lose everything I've been working toward. Freedom is no longer within my grasp, and it feels like all hope is lost.

My one saving grace? BioGuy.

I've never met the student I'm tutoring through the Extra Credit program, but that hasn't stopped him from owning my thoughts and preserving my sanity.

BioGuy

We didn't mean any harm.

We were just trying to pass our philosophy class and save a little money by sharing a tutor.

But, now that we've gotten to know GildedGirl, it doesn't feel right to continue deceiving her.

How do we confess that it's all been a lie? That the person she thinks she knows isn't one guy...but three?

**Extra Credit is a contemporary reverse harem romance loosely inspired by the Rapunzel fairy tale. Though the book features Violet, Tobias, Jude, and Lincoln from the Lonely Souls series, it can be read as a standalone.

That was not what I expected.
And sometimes that is a good thing. But it wasn’t with Extra Credit.

There were a few things that I enjoyed:
· This is a Reverse Harem without bullying.
· The FC is a slightly disabled woman
· It is based on Rapunzel (it’s like retelling of the Disney movie, but Flynn Rider is 3 guys 🙄)
That was about it.

What I didn’t like:
1. The 3 guys all speak the same. I had to constantly check from which POV each chapter was. Even Violet, the female protagonist, had the same way of thinking.
2. Insta - love from everyone.
3. I’m not in the RH for the sex, but this doesn’t happened until the epilogue.
4. Everyone seemed unrealistic.
5. It started ok, the small chapters helped. But after a while the whole theme changed. On the center was something completely different and it felt weird.
6. I found out that this is like a spin off from a 3 book series from the same author. I haven’t read the series. That wasn’t a problem to understand the plot, but I couldn’t relate to the protagonists from the other series.
7. At the end I was seriously cringing with everything.

I really liked The Lonely Souls trilogy by this author and was happy that side character Violet got her own contemporary retelling - this one being Rapunzel. You don't need to read that trilogy to enjoy this book but those characters do appear in this book so I was glad I did, as it made certain elements of this book deeper.

Like Lonely Souls, it is a reverse harem story set in college and I have to say that some of Violet's circumstances had me stressed out - I find injustice and unfairness particularly hard to deal with in my entertainment (books or TV/movies), so her situation was hard for me at times. But overall, this is a very light, sweet read, and I very much enjoyed and admired the base story the author created. I tend to prefer dark and dirty reads but every once in awhile I like to pepper in something I would have read when I was in junior high, and this fits that bill for me. There is some very brief, respectful physical romance at the end but for the most part this book reads pretty young. I didn't feel any heat/chemistry or a strong emotional connection between Violet and her men, but I found certain elements romantic and above and beyond the romance enjoyed Violet's character journey, how she grew into herself and escaped the situation she was in with healthy support.

I've always liked this author's writing style (and how well edited her books are) and as with the previous trilogy set in this world I remain impressed at her creativity in making contemporary stories that pay homage to their inspirations. Looking forward to reading the rest of her books that I have not gotten to yet.

Violet made a promise to herself, this year would be different. No more hiding; this year she would start to really live again. But her first taste of freedom put her on the road to true captivity. Why did she expect anything more? She wasn't in control of her own life. Her decisions were not her own to make. The only thing that felt real, that she looked forward to was BioGuy, the guy she was tutoring in Philosophy on the school's Extra Credit site. He seems to enjoy talking to her as much as she does but maybe it's all in her mind. After all, her life has never been a fairy tale.

The story of GildedGirl and BioGuy is an imaginative, modern-day RH retelling of Rapunzel. I love the premise. The anonymity of screen personas allowed Violet so much more freedom to be the person she was working to be. Without this beginning there never would have been a chance for these characters to become family. Violet's character being an introvert was only a minor obstacle compared to the damage her mother had inflicted on her confidence. She would have never been able to allow herself to be seen in a way needed to start down the road to relationships. Jude, Lincoln and Tobias would have never gotten past her walls of insecurity. The guys all pretending to be one person made them work as a team, see each other with new eyes, and be more considerate of one another. What started out as an innocent deception worked beautifully to solidify a brotherhood and find love. My favorite line of the book, "If we were her strength, she was our heart" says it best.

Beyond the relationships, this story was psychologically compelling. Violet's parents all failed. Each one. The damage inflicted on her due to mental instability, weakness, fear, and good intentions was overwhelming and almost overpowering. Without Jude, Lincoln, and Tobias, along with Thea and her guys, and even Brodie Violet would have been lost to the world. She reminded me of her namesake. Violets are beautiful, yet fragile. Their blossoms can be a beautiful blanket or they can be easily trampled. Being along with Violet as she allowed herself to be who she wanted, take what she needed to get her HEA was enchanting.

- no relationship development

Tbh it was kind of insta love, Tobias was in love with Thea but suddenly he loves Violet? Like do u love Thea or Violet? One moment he says that he was in love with Thea but then he forgets about her and thinks about Violet. The relationship was rushed...almost confusing how fast it went. I didnt feel the connection between the characters. I did like violet a bit and how throughout the book became stronger but thats it. Idk why she even forgave Leo after what he did. The other guys, Lincoln who claims he is a manwhore does nothing manwhorish. He also fell instantly in love with Violet, but again no connection or chemistry. I like Jude but again, no connection. The characters were only saying that they love Violet but it didnt feel like it, especially how fast their relationship went. It was wayyyyy rushed up.

Oh fairy tails....Violet is now in my top favorites that this author has written! Jude, Lincoln and Tobias are exactly what she needs to find her strength, to know her worth and to learn to love all of herself. And that surprise? Wow! I never saw that one coming. This book is on the tamer side so if you are wanting to dip your toes into the reverse harem genre, this is for you! (I would highly suggest the Lonely Souls books first)

Extra Credit is a refreshing mix of lightness and banter with the right amount of tension and drama, plus friendship and romance. While the basic premise of a Rapunzel re-telling in a contemporary setting means that you know there will be family challenges and restrictions placed on Violet, the actual events, with their twists and turns, had me on the edge of my seat and guessing what was going to happen next. The banter and funnier parts of the book had me smiling and laughing, while the emotional scenes hit the right note of not being too heavy for me.

Violet is absolutely one of my favorite of Ms. Reed's characters now. She experienced a life-altering event, but didn't allow it to warp her. Violet's caring, kind, compassionate, and she's still putting herself out there (as much as an introvert can). I loved how she strengthens and grows in this book, especially how natural I felt the character development flowed. She was able to handle what life threw at her, even when she doubted herself, and she had the support of her friends, including the three guys whose friendship eventually morphs into more.

Jude, Lincoln, and Tobias were amazing and incredible for Violet. They were each the right amount of supportive and protective in each of their own ways. Not only did Violet grow in this book, but each of the guys did as well, individually and within their friendship. I enjoyed that the guys stood out from each other, even with their individual contributions to their BioGuy messages. The friendship between the guys and then their relationships with Violet all felt natural.

All the individual threads of Extra Credit together formed a wonderful stand-alone that I know I'll re-read in the future.

A solid 4.25⭐️’s… Kinda spoiler ahead…

I am very much into smutty romance books that get straight to the point… and then some. This was FAR from it… quite seriously the complete opposite in terms of romance novels.

I was enthralled with the plot. There were SO many nuances and various levels of plot twists, yet I could feel how much the guys loved Violet… and it was very thoughtfully and artistically done by the author. So much so that I didn’t realize the MC’s hadn’t gotten freaky until the 97% mark of the book! Whaa?!

I am unsure if this plot continues or if these characters are involved in other books by this author, but I will certainly consider reading more if that’s the case.

This was a pretty creative Rapunzel retelling as a college reverse harem, and for the most part it worked really well. I liked all the characters, and they managed to feel (somewhat) realistic and normal despite the crazy drama… and what drama there ended up being.

What worked less well was the pacing — the book felt slow-paced and yet somehow all the relationships jumped to ‘I love you, we all want to be with you’ very quickly. I think this actually happened in Autumn Reed’s Love Notes series too (and I loved those books), so maybe I’m just a bit pickier about college romances.

I'm sad to say that I didn't like this book. I love Autumn's writing but I felt like this book was just a continuation of her last series.. almost no steamy scenes.

What I like about Autumn is her ability to bring her characters to life. This book touches your heart in so many ways. You feel pain for her heroine and cheer for her when she finds her inner strength. Well written, another success for Autumn.

I was so happy to read more about these characters

After reading the previous series by this author, these characters piqued my interest and boy was I happy that we would get more of their story!

Violet's story hit close to home for me because I felt like I was her at some point in my life and it made me feel everything I felt back then. I can't deny it hit me quite hard at one point, but I trust this author to take me on a wonderful journey and I have to say that I have no regret.

I loved revisiting Thea and her men, I loved how the author brought all these characters together and made them grow individually as well as together. I love how this book is all about taking back the power in your own life, changing your own narrative instead of the one that's expected of you. The boys... They were everything.

Overall this was a pretty sweet read with a plot that kept me on the edge of my seat, making me binge it from start to finish.

Intro
This book is in the same world as the Lonely Souls series, but while we do see Thea and her men again, this story is about Violet and her men. You don’t necessarily have to read Thea’s series to read this book, but it’s definitely helpful to completely understand the full context and characters.

Also, as a note…the Lonely Souls series is inspired by The Wizard of Oz and Extra Credit is inspired by Rapunzel/Tangled. No, these are not retellings, but you can see the inspiration woven within the stories. As The Wizard of Oz and Tangled are two of my absolute favorite movies, I was even more thrilled with these stories.

The Heroine
Violet starts out as super meek and…well…a total pushover. I liked her, but at the same time, she was kind of one of those characters I couldn’t help but get frustrated with and think, jeez, just grow a backbone already. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I understand totally what it’s like to want to make your parents/family happy…but this was over the top. Thankfully, she does grow that backbone and she becomes MUCH more likeable as the story progresses. While obviously a romance, this is truly a coming-of-age novel with what I believe to be an important narrative. Violet has been through so much and she’s spent her entire life trying to make her mother happy. Her mom is a perfect example of a manipulator and emotional blackmailer and it was so frustrating to see her in action. Thankfully, Violet ultimately comes into her own and learns to stand up for herself, but I’ll be honest–the journey there is kind of rough.

The Heroes
Jude, Lincoln, and Tobias are all so different, yet they complement each other incredibly well. The premise of Violet tutoring BioGuy was so sweet and I enjoyed their conversations. The slow burn buildup was the kind of swoony, butterflies-in-the-stomach interaction that I live for in a romance. Each guy has something different to bring to the table and they each have a different relationship with Violet that’s sweet and fun. Jude is more serious while Lincoln is playful and Tobias is kind of the friend-to-lover. Also, I know the author didn’t necessarily base him on the Rapunzel characters, but Lincoln reminded me so much of Flynn Rider and I adored it. Each guy had different qualities that made him perfect for Violet, but my personal favorite was definitely Lincoln 🙂

Bullet Points
*Violet’s progression in this book was incredibly inspiring. I genuinely loved her character, despite being completely different from Thea.
*When I first became aware of who Violet’s love interests would be, Tobias was very much my least favorite. I liked him in the beginning of Thea’s story, but as her books progressed, I got to where I could hardly stand him. Wellll…this book completely changed my mind. I don’t know why I ever doubt Autumn because she never leaves me disappointed.
*This book is suuuper slow-burn, which I both love and hate. When we finally get to see a *makin’ sweet love* scene, it’s so well worth the wait and I love everything about it…I just sort of wish we’d been able to see a full love scene with the other two guys (although, the sexy scenes they did get together were amazing, so don’t fret). This definitely didn’t ruin the story for me, it’s just something I always think of with RH novels like these. HOWEVER, what I read was beautifully written and I have no complaints. ❤

Conclusion
As is no surprise of an Autumn Reed novel, I loved this story. It was such a sweet romance while also showing how much strength Violet gains in the end. I highly recommend this book for anyone who’s a fan of reverse harem/college romance. And if you do end up reading, please come back and let me know what you thought!

I received an advanced/review copy of this book. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content and honesty of my review.

Wow this book is actually a rapunzel retelling but instead of one guy it was 3 BAHAHAHA. Violet’s mother well stepmother Regina locked her in her bedroom after a video was posted about Violet when she went to rescue someone drowning in the water and her mother took advantage of the situation and took her car, phone, and basically her laptop after she started locking her own daughter in her bedroom and then letting her out when she got home from work. I’m pretty confused at how Violet didn’t see her moms bipolaric actions before, I don’t think bipolaric is a word but I’m going with it. She had her laptop for school since her mother made her take online classes and Violet decided to start tutoring Bioguy for philosophy and turns out it was Lincoln, Tobias, and Jude all along and Tobias guesses it was her first but they didn’t tell her, soon after at the party after they kidnapped her at her window she figured out soon enough that BioGuy was the three musketeers. UM SO LEO AND VIOLET ARE HALF SIBLINGS WTF, their mom looks so sweet but she left both of them and was living with Violet’s dad, she seemed forgivable and it seemed that Violet had forgiven her but Leo was the stubborn one but he gave their mom a chance for Violet. I was shocked like the already had a connection like a friend vibe and it changed when their mom said they were half siblings but Leo thinks of Violet as his little sister and he adapted to it so quickly which had me gasping sort of. I just didn’t get it when Violet entered her relationship with Lincoln, Jude, and Tobias that Leo was so against in and I was like hypocritical much? But Violet didn’t back down and was like Thea gets to have 3 boyfriends including you but I don’t? She didn’t actually say that but it was a rephrase of what she had said BAHAHAHAHA. Leo knew he was defeated and he hugged his sister and he even gave them the townhouse he used to stay in as a gift of sibling love, that sounds like incest but who cares. I loved it and the humour in this book had me wheezing and laughing so I rated it a 5/5 and there wasn’t much smut so this counts as a slow burn and the smut was finally revealed in the epilogue with Lincoln and Violet and her first time and it was the way she described it that had me jaw dropped so a 4/5, no comment on the positions BAHAHAHHA JK MAYBE.

DNF @ Chapter 64.

I think I just really don't vibe with contemporary.

I kept coming across moments that felt like they were written as if they were for a teen drama TV show. Like... that's not how college works, or how people talk.

Example 1 - Violet's mom changing her schedule at college without her knowledge or permission. That... legally doesn't happen. Violet is an adult and therefore would have to give permission for her mom to have access to any of her school records.

Example 2 - Violet's brother saying, "I had a lot of time to think while in prison, and I've moved on from my troubles." Yeah, no. No one comes out of prison better .

Additionally, all the guys, while discernible, fall for violet really fast. This is especially weird when Lincoln is "supposed" to be some total rake. Yet, we also never get any moments of him being that way; we're just told abut it.

And, I'm sorry - I'm all about diversity and inclusivity, but Violet is still a Mary Sue. She has no flaws besides being disabled and an introvert. All the bullying she endures, again, feels like it's written for a teen drama. This feels extra true when no one else gets slut shamed, even though there's a whole Greek system at this college.

Also, this is so slow burn, it's no burn. It that's your thing, cool, but it's not mine. I'm here for the smut. Give me sexy times!

I would like to know how the story ends, but I can predict it ends in a HEA. I'm bored, so I'll be moving on.

I loooooved Autumn decided to write this spinoff standalone from the Lonely Souls series. I always wanted to know more about Violet and based on the guys that were going be in her harem, I was so intrigued on how that would all develop! I definitely have an overall favorite of the bunch, but I thought the personalities were different enough (some with normal tropes, some not which was a nice change of pace) to keep me interested and make me want to get this book in paperback (along with the rest of the Lonely Soul books haha). Violet really grows in this book (and I always loved she was the nerdier girl - one after my own heart haha). I love how the guys helped her open up and become the women she was always meant to be, but was hidden/almost lost because of her accident, her family, etc.

Amazing book, adds another dimension to the series (not just a spinoff for a sake of spinoffs). I wonder if we will get any more from this world? I can definitely think of another one I would love to read more about ❤️

If you loved Spineless, Heartless, and Witless, you will love Extra Credit! Autumn always does a phenomenal job with her relationship building and character growth (and the 🔥🔥🔥🔥, let's not forget haha), and she rocked it again in this story.

I absolutely loved this book!!!! This might be favorite book by Autumn Reed ever. It’s so so so good!!! I think Violet is my favorite heroine, tied with Thea, of Autumn Reed’s books! She’s so cute and adorable and sweet and super smart and kind, but also a lot stronger than she appears. She grows up in this book and she stops letting people control her life. She takes control of her life and starts living it the way she wants to, with the help of Lincoln, Jude, and Tobias. They are her her princes, her rescuers, her loves, and her life. They show her joy and freedom and true happiness and family and strength and friendship and laughter and most importantly, love. They help each other and they grew up and changed together. It was a beautiful adaptation of the Tangled movie storyline, with wonderful twists. Violet makes the perfect, modern-day Princess Rapunzel. I also loved the connections to Autumn Reed’s other two series in this book, and how it played an integral part of this story. I highly recommend this book!!! It’s a perfect, charming reverse-harem romance book!

This is a loosely based modern interpretation of the Fairy Tale, Rapunzel.
Violet’s character was first introduced in Reed’s, “Lonely Souls Trilogy.” Her getting her own story was something I was 100% excited about!
Violet starts off as a girl trying to escape her Mothers thumb and discover her own way in life. The story starts up in college (Harbor University) where she is desperately trying to escape her label of,“cripple girl,” due to an accident, which happened years ago. Tired of the looks filled with pity or judgement, Violet is determined to make the most out of Uni life. Enter Lincoln, Tobias, and Jude, three guys who seem up to the task of getting Violet out of her shell.
Their story is not an easy one; filled with a bit of trickery and lies. I don’t want to give everything away but I will say you need to read this in order to understand Violet and her guys story. It doesn’t start off as a Fairy Tale but the ending is a guaranteed HEA. No having to pick a Prince here, lucky Violet!

A story well worth the read

I loved this new take on rapunzel , Romeo and Juliet. With violet having to deal with her over controlling mother and the secrets that were revealed thought out the story that blew my mind away. I loved how brave violet was though out the story and loved how she grew in to a confident young woman with the help of her three sexy guys who I found sweet, caring and totally funny and I love how they would do anything to keep violet safe and it was all thanks to a little extra credit to help bring them together. I loved this story and how it had me drawn in right from the very start and had me guessing if thing would turn out ok,I totally loved the chemistry that formed between the characters and I loved that you not only got to read about violet but you also got to see Thea and her Sharpe men in action as they help violet in the story and I love the bit were Lan got a dog called max that was more interested in Violet than it was him and it made me smile thinking of my own dog max and I just loved reading every minute.

You know I really shouldn't be surprised that this book was freaking amazing, I love everything that Autumn writes. She is so good at storytelling, surprises, love and most of all making fall in love with her characters, they are so genuine, and down to earth and relatable. I adored watching Violets growth and transformation and it was beautiful to watch this relationship grow, it wasn't just about physical intimacy, and chemistry, it was so much more, they were there for each other and emotionally grew so strong together and I loved every minute!!! I loved The Lonely Souls trilogy and loved watching Thea and her men, and where Violet fit into that story, but wow this connection and bringing more family together was awesome and very unexpected but fit perfectly!!! Definitely buy this book you won't be sorry!!

I loved this book! It was very well written, I loved that it continued with Thea and the Sharpes story and we didn’t have to say goodby to them after the Lonely Souls Series was done. I loved the Rapunzel callbacks and how detailed the story was written. I was very invested in Violet’s character and was excited to see Tobias, Jude and Lincoln get a happy ending. Noting felt forced or rushed in the book, it felt thought out and like it was given proper time to develop. Also, really liked the hint when Regina freaks a little at the ice cream shop when Violet says “I’m not you’re baby.”

If you loved Lonely Souls read this book! Completes the series and it’s overall an awesome book.

What a fun read this was, and I think may have just moved up to being one of my favorites by Autumn.

Violet is such a fun character. She is so fun and I found myself rooting for her from the beginning. To watch her grow with the help of the guys, Lincoln, Tobias and Jude, was just something that I could not look away from. The way that these guys held her up, and supported her just had me falling in love with them. They help each other and be each others rock. They are family and it shows.

Loved it and I hope that you would enjoy this as well. It will definitely put a smile on your face like it did mine.

After reading about Thea and her guys, I really was excited for this book but I didn’t expect to love it or Violet so much. There were quite a few twists in this book and some that I could have never predicted! Jude, Lincoln, and Tobias are perfect! I absolutely adored their characters. They were all so different but each had a specific trait that Violet really needed. This book didn’t have nearly as much steam as I’m used to which would usually mean I didn’t like it but I found I wasn’t really missing it in this book. The relationship building was so intense that I didn’t need it. I really hope this isn’t the end for all these characters. I really want more!

Absolutely adored this book! I was a Violet fan while reading the Lonely Souls trilogy and was so excited once Autumn announced Violet was getting her own book. This is a very sweet, slow burn RH. I don’t typically love slow burn but with a stand-alone RH you almost need it in order to give the characters time to grow and connect. Loved the spin on the Rapunzel fairy tale and the twist at the end came as a total shock. This book is more sweet than steam, but I enjoyed the amazing chemistry between Violet and each of her guys. Another 5 star hit for Autumn Reed!

Yet another amazing stand alone by the hand of author Autumn Reed. I've been a fan since I've read the Stardust series in 2015. This is inspired by Rapunzel and it is well done. This isn't the first try by Autumn since she has another retelling and I love these. (Lonely souls series is the other) This one is about Violet and she is tutoring BioGuy. What she doesn't know it's not just one guy but in reality three. I love that this book keeps things on the lighter side so if you're new to RH this one is for you.

Amazingly well written only wish it had more heat

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were very likeable it was extremely well written and everything flowed so well. The only reason I took off a star was because there was basically no intimate scenes until the end and even those were pretty short and left me feeling like the story wasn't as fulfilling as it had the potential to be. It was almost a no burn instead of a slow burn. However I will say of you are okay with that then absolutely read this book. It really is a great read and I adored the main characters.

Satisfying!

After the previous three books, I didn’t think anything could be better but I was wrong. This is quite a psychological exploration but it all works. The storyline is interesting and with some unexpected surprises but best of all, a happy ending for Violet and her three guys. I think you need to have read the other three books to understand some of the events but that’s no hardship!
I would happily read more books by this author.

What a cute feel good book! I really enjoyed reading this book and following Violet’s story. It was a pretty interesting way to tie in Rapunzel’s story in a more modern way. I especially loved the frying pan scene, it made me laugh. It was a pretty short read, but for the most part light and not too much drama. It also had very empowering themes and I liked how Violet was portrayed not letting her disability make her feel broken.

The modern day take on Rapunzel is amazing!

Violets character is one that you will love. This story of self discovery, strength, determination and emotion will have you on the edge of your seat. It’s action packed with twists and turns and will have you shocked and swooning throughout.

I loved this book and how we got to see more of these characters and to get Violets story was wonderful!

A MUST READ!!

Beautiful story

The story was beautifully written and incredibly sweet. I loved being able to read the shy FMC develop in a confident and well loved person. And I loved how supportive all of her love interests were. It is a slow-burn book so if you don't like to read those then this isn't for you. But the clear development in the book and the clear and obvious love from the start makes this an excellent story to read.
