Baker Street Romance #2

Romancing the Complicated Girl

Rate this book
Megan “Meenie” Gardenia rubs people the wrong way. She claims it’s just her sense of humor. People can’t take a joke!

Megan attends a weekly support group, but not because she has any type of problem. Oh, no. She only goes to meetings to unload her baked goods and tell other people how to smarten up and fix their lives.

Now there’s a new guy coming to the group. He says he doesn’t have problems, either. But he keeps showing up. And everyone is starting to notice the sparks that are flying between Megan and the new guy.

What will Megan do to make a perfect, problem-free man fall madly in love with her? Wrong question. It’s more like what won’t she do.

There are plenty of LOLs and bittersweet moments to enjoy on Megan Gardenia’s bumpy journey toward love.

The story is definitely unique. Megan is one mean, bordering on cruel person sometimes. And the hero, practically a saint for falling in love with her. I couldn't see why he likes her, other than he might be a masochist. Jk.

However, the book was extra clean, as in squicky and fade to black. That's the huge demerit I have for it. I like my books to have a little bit steam at the every least.

It's perfect though for those who love low angst, no steam romance with non-ordinary heroine and funny dynamics among secondary characters. Still a fun read!

Heads up: readers are likely to despise Meenie, the titular character, AT FIRST (I certainly did!), but keep going! The evolution from Meenie to Megan has elements of humor, a surprising mix of wisdom and utter cluelessness, and a well-hidden vulnerability that made me want to hug Megan after wanting to punch her in the head! In other words, she is complex and sometimes unfathomable just like a real person; I certainly appreciate a writer who can create dimensional characters, and I already want to know what Tina's and Megan's mother is like, and why she allowed her child to grow to be so obnoxious without correction, and why the aunt is a man-hater... Obviously, "Romancing the Complicated Girl" manages to engage this reader! A story (and a life) is more than a few pages show, and I'm so glad I allowed my faith in this author to send me a reminder of that message in such a lighthearted package!

I received an ARC for my honest review....

As usual Mimi kept me laughing throughout the book!

I was happy to see Megan get her own book in the Baker Street Romance Series. Megan wonders is she will ever find the right guy, everyone say's she is so "complicated". Megan speaks her mind without a filter and sometimes wishes she could take back some of the things she says.

While out on a date with Duncan, she exchanges some words with him, and he says "you must do some really nice flower arrangements at the shop", she replies "We do. Why?", and Duncan replies, "because that attitude of yours would drive you of of business if you didn't". The bantering goes back and forth and she tells him his goatee makes his mouth look like a lady's privates. Needless to say they part ways and Megan feels just a tad bad for treating Duncan the way she did.

At the next Group Session, Drew is the newcomer to the group. He's very GQ and Megan is smitten with him. Of course she can't stop her mouth from spewing off things either, and says "Don't tell me you're one of those guys who goes to self-help groups to pick up chicks with low self esteem." Of course Drew dishes it right back at her....Complitated. Hmmmm. Isn't that the word they use in magazines to describe someone who's a bitch?"

Still Megan cannot get Drew out of her mind, all she can think about it his smell....Citrus.Chocolate.Balls.

Even with the words between them being exchanged, there is no denying the chemistry between Megan and Drew. At the group meeting Feather tells them they can either date or be in the self help group, but they cannot do both.

Megan and Drew end up going home together after running into each other at O'Flannagan's Pub, and it's everything Megan could have ever wanted. Still she decides it's best if she breaks it off with him before she gets hurt. Even after Megan sends Drew a "Dear John" text message, she cannot get him out of her head, and shows up at the dinner party he invited her to. Drew is glad she came, and so is Megan.

love this ROM com ! It’s book 2 Angie will keep you glued till the end of the story. Angie wrote a story that has lots of twists and turns. it will make you turn and examine yourself and see how others react. Both characters are very different but both Meghan and Drew are drawn to each other but its a pull and push for Meghan. She's afraid to totally let go and trust someone. Till she meets Drew . Drew is hoping Meghan will show him that the feeling are mutual. Drew invites Meghan to a gathering she first says no but she first says no but he's very happy when Meghan shows up

Tiffany Williams performance was fantastic. Her voice is very good and smooth and strong. She did all the characters great

Pretty good

I enjoyed the first book and now this one. The first book had a good concept but lacked a more experienced writer qualities, I.e. transitional paragraphs and some grammatical errors. But overall, with some editing, it would have been a 4 star. This one is definitely improved writing. Still needs a bit of editing, but I enjoyed it so much more.

FUNNY!

This book made me laugh out loud like a crazy person!

It's about this brute girl who has a loose tongue and says whatever is on her mind, all the time. Which means she ends up being rude most of the time. Specially around people who makes her nervous.
She goes to this support group, to see if she can become a better person, but then enters hot dentist, who's pretty awkward himself, but he's fascinated by her and knows how to deal with her quirks pretty well. They make such a couple of weirdos! They banter is so funny! And their flirting even more!

There's nothing more to say about this book other than it's hilarious, but too fast! It ends so abruptly! I think the author could have extended the story a little more. But that's not really a bad thing, just left me wanting more.

Favorite Quotes:

" My last sorta-boyfriend said I was always emasculating him. I told him to grow some balls, and then also grow some hair on the balls. He didn't think that was funny. After we broke up, I sent him a box of tampons by mail. He didn't think was funny either. No sense of humor "

"If your sister's half as pretty as you, she must be a knockout."
I choke on his compliment. Literally. The orange juice in my mouth has nowhere to go. I expel the juice from my mouth, spraying it all over Drew's crisp jacket and equally crisp dress shirt.
He doesn't back away or flinch. He nods his head down to one side, sticks out his tongue, and licks a few bead of orange juice from his shoulder.
"A much better choice than the coffee," he says.
"That juice was in my mouth"
"Should I be worried? Where else has your mouth been?"

"If the orange tie isn't ridiculous now, was it ever? Is reality shifting right now? Am I in the Matrix?"

"My body gets hot and weird, letting me know it's now developing a dentist fetish. I have a feeling my next cleaning appointment is going to be weird."

She pushes her glasses up her nose. " I read that
Fifty Shades book, and I turned into a wild sex animal. You all should try it. "
Abbie nod in agreement. "Spanking is the new oral"

Drew is bigger and stronger than me, but his hold isn't as effective as he thinks. I shift my weight in a way he's not expecting and a second later, he's pinned under me.
He goes limp, saving his dignity by not even trying to get way. "Now what? Do you spit in my mouth until I say Uncle? That's what my brother would do."

This is my review of the audio version as posted on Audible - my rating there is: story - 3. performance - 5, overall - 4 stars:

I like Angie Pepper's romances - they are usually funny, warm stories with characters you like from page one. And as far as the general story goes, it's also true about this one, except one thing - I really didn't like Megan...

The Publisher's summary starts with 'Megan “Meenie” Gardenia rubs people the wrong way. She claims it’s just her sense of humor. People can’t take a joke!' - and that's exactly what Megan does, rubs people the wrong way. She says she is straightforward and always tells the truth about people (mostly unpleasant, as it happens) because that's the right thing to do, and if they can't take it, it's their problem. BUT in my opinion you can be straightforwad and empathetic at the same time. Megan isn't - and that's why I couldn't really warm up to her... And as a reader I really, really need to like my heroes and heroines, especially in romances...

Don't get me wrong, I liked the book in general, the plot is fast and has that humorous touch of all the other books by Angie Pepper, but because Megan is so mean as a character it was hard for me to believe in the growing love between her and Drew. Even the eventual change in her character was not really convincing and just didn't work so well - for me...

But don't let that stop you from reading the book; it really is an entertaining, plotwise concise and emotional story with a lot of pretty well-written background characters you'll love. And you should definitely continue with the series, as the other books will give you lots of fun (I know that for sure - I've binge listened to books 2, 3 and 4 this week:)).

Narration by Ms Williams is fantastic; she reads at the right pace and gives characters life with her voice. She gives all the books in the series great interpretations.

DISCLAIMER: I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Two People Who Need to take a Chance....Baker Street Romance #2

When Megan aka Meenie meets Drew Morgan at her self-help group she basically has lusting thoughts of him. He is at her class the night of all nights after her dat with Duncan which went so wrong. Duncan tells her she's not his type. Drew is so sweet and wants to protect her...Drew has his own issues with relationships, and immediately Megan decides what that reason is. Really lays in on him telling him some not so nice things.

The story is beautiful and touching. However, Meenie's problems go a little deeper..It becomes clearer to her why she does the things she does which push men away. It seems men can't put up with her joking around. Her sister Tina's advice was to stay away from him.

“She looks at me sideways. “You like this guy? But he’s a jackass.”
“Exactly. I think I finally found someone who’s got enough balls to take a few jokes and put up with me.”

One day Meenie decides she is going to try and change. She goes to apologize to Duncan over the way she treated him on what she thought was a date..It goes so wrong. She goes to great lengths to get Dr. Drew Morgan to her house after that.. It is really funny what she does. It gets a little steamy. He likes Megan, and if she would be willing to give this a chance it could be good. See where it goes..

One moment when she's left with a decision to make what will she do? I highly recommend this book and also Blue Roses...

My second Mimi Strong book. I love her writing. The characters are so much fun.

One of favorite sayings:

“Last week, Meenie tried to drive me away from the group. She said I have no balls. I don’t think she meant to, but she seems to be a… complicated girl.”

“I raise my hand. “That means bitch, everyone. Drew’s insulting me. I vote we give him a time out.”

Meenie is a complicated person. She pushes people away before they can hurt her. Her mouth is what gets her into trouble, but I have to admit she is off the charts hilarious. Meenie has no clue as to what her problem is, but when Drew sets foot into her bubble things get even more out if control for her. Drew is handsome and has a few issues of his own, but he gets Meenie, or he at least is intrigued by her. She pushes him away, but he is back for more. Once I am half way through the book I am desperately hoping Meenie will figure things out before Drew is gone for good. Some hot sex. Hilariously funny. Fabulous ending.

Quotes:

"You're short, and your goatee makes your mouth look like a lady's privates."

"Well, maybe you should call up that girl who took your balls and ask if you can have them back. Get your balls out of her purse, then stick them back on."

"I feel terrible. He recycles. He might come off as sensitive and touchy, but a guy who recycles can't be that bad."

" I pat my own stomach and nod. 'I don't know about babies, but I do own a baby maker, so I'm qualified to pretend I know.' "

"I think I finally found someone who's got enough balls to take a few jokes and put up with me. I think I would like him to put his sperm shooter inside me and pretend we're making a baby."

"You make my knees weak, and my spine weak, and you're all up inside my boundaries, with your tongue in my mouth checking my molars. Shame on you."

"So, he's all sad because he was with some ice queen for too long, maybe since high school, then he meets me and starts gobbling me down like I'm Prozac and Boner Pills all rolled up in one."

First we met Teenie…NOW we meet Meanie. Well her name is Megan and I cannot say how happy I am that we got to have her story. Megan is the complicated one…or so she thinks. I couldn’t stop thinking of Megan as an onion…YES just like in Shrek where Donkey tells Shrek he’s rolled up in layers like an onion boy.

Well folks, meet onion girl. Megan isn’t mean, she is complicated but in ways that I think every single person is. She wants happiness but in many cases self-destructs. What Megan does have, is the hardest, strongest backbone you will find. She is a quick whited girl who while like an onion has many layers, she is a girl who wants to love and be loved.

Now, enters Dr. Hottie. HE’s got attitude, spunky and smell Megan’s “I’ll double punch you in the sack” no holds bar gruff. He wants to lap it up like an ice cream cone melting on a hot summer’s day. He’s got issues, he’s got skills most of all, he’s go eyes for one and while she puts him through the ringer a bit, he softens Megan. He makes her see what she cannot and in turn she sees him for what he is – a good man, who will love you, infuriate you and make your organism like you deserve.

Sex is hot, sex is yummy…all of their intimate interactions are brilliant…mmmm grass stains anyone?

Book 2 in the Baker Street series is to die for. Just when you thought connections and encounters were hot in the first book, well they implode in this book. A must read! There is once again amazing balance of humour and intrigue sprinkled with sexy on top.

A Treasure of Therapy, Toothaches and Trysts

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

Although this is the second book in the clean romantic comedy series, this story stands on its own and does not require having read the first one in order to enjoy it. If you have read the first one then you will be happy to hear that Teenie and Luca do make a few appearances.

This book is about Megan "Meanie" Gardenia. She is abrasive, anti-social, sarcastic and judgmental. Everyone else has a problem. She's perfect just the way she is. (sarcasm noted) It's interesting to approach a romantic comedy from the POV of a quick-witted but damaged. Fortunately she bakes so at least her group therapy group puts up with it.

In comes the dashing dentist Drew and they're at each others throats (both metaphorically and literally) They have their back and forth, their ups and downs, clashes and romance. It's a whirlwind.

This is a hilarious character study with a few twists thrown in as we get to know both characters and why they present themselves the way they do. Angie Pepper is always a pleasure to read and Tiffany Williams is always a pleasure to listen to. She voices the ever expanding cast and brings them to life. Her performance is an audible delight.

I enjoyed this story and look forward to further romances in this neighborhood. Especially one for the shy roommate. *hint hint*

This is the second book from the Baker Street Romance series. It's about Megan(Meenie), who we meet in Blue Roses as Tina's sister. In this story, we learned about Megan and why she was "complicated." There were so many layers to her and wish that we got more insight into that. Though we get some information, I still wanted more. Megan was hilarious. I liked her sense of humor-she wasn't afraid to tell it how it is and the delivery was great. The support group scenes were awesome and that is where she meets Drew. I really loved Drew. He had his funny moments and he liked Megan just the way she was. They always seem to go toe-to-toe with each other and that made for awesome banter. The attraction is there but Megan is so scared to make it more because of her past. But will she get over that hump and realize that Drew is everything she needs? You will have to read to find out. I loved that Tina, Luca, and Rory make appearances. They are just great characters and I can't wait for Rory to get her own story. That girl has got me intrigued. I also loved the surprise appearances of characters from Mimi's other stories and I was so happy to read about them. Once again, Mimi delivers the comedy. A very funny and good book that will keep you interested till the end. So go and pick up this book and get lost in the world of Baker Street.

Funny and quirky with significantly more character development in Megan than we saw in book #1 with Tina.

Megan goes to a self help group at the community center on Tuesdays... she started going thinking it was a weight watchers group and ended up liking the people better. This group is led by Feather, who we met in Kissing Coach. We also see Duncan again -- from Two to Tango -- who goes on a date with M after she goes into his antiques store. The date does not go well, which has M questioning what she's doing. She's brutally honest -- and funny -- and this is off-putting to a lot of people and she feels she's living up to the nickname Meenie.

Drew is new to the group and he's a mystery because he hasn't shared with the group yet. There's an instant attraction between M and D and lots of witty banter. We eventually learn that M does have issues and a really funny T-shirt.

What we also see is the beginnings of a transformation in Rory, the sex-phobe, and possibly a relationship of some sort with Duncan??? Hmm. Can't wait for book #3.

There's a lovely HEA... would have had another star if we could have had a scene with M and D and T and L from book 1. Megan's got a really nice relationship with Luca, so I kinda wanted to see that with Tina and Drew for some reason. And maybe the quirky mother will come back. There are clearly issues with the women in this family.

Megan and Drew's story drew you in at the first chapter ..... Two people showing up at the same group thinking they we're in a different group and both ending up in a self help group that 1) they both don't think they need no 2) they both stayed and kept coming back for more.....so did they need the group or not ? You decide !

They both come from a bad relationships but the relationships had hardships....Megan aka Meenie with her dad thinking men we're not good and Drew thinking he was no good due to his ex girlfriend. Can Megan work through her thinking that all men are bd and give Drew a chance ? Will Drew ever think he is good enough for a own man or will he let Megan drive him away ??

Rory tries to help Megan though he wrong thoughts about Drew bit in the mean time is Rory starting to have a break through of her own kind ? Tina and Luca try to help put too but....is here advice going to help ?? Maybe Megan will end to be the old cat lady on the street behind the hedges.....lol

Loved this story..funny and sad at the same time !! Can't wait for Rory's story !!

This is the 2nd in the Baker Street series and focuses on Tina's sister, Megan aka Meenie. Megan was hilarious and oddly endearing in her own way. She came off as a tom boy who was unsure of herself and we got to see her work through her issues with the help of her Tuesday night group and Drew. Drew is a dentist who pops into Megan's Tuesday night class on accident, at first I worried Meenie would scare him off with her wit and barbs and let's face it constant talk of balls, but he stuck around and won her over. There is a brief moment of Luca and Tina in this book and we see more of Rory and her possible love connection? I have to admit I enjoyed Blue Roses more than this one despite laughing way more in this book. It felt like we spent a lot of time with just Meenie being hypercritical and unsure and not enough on the romance like we got in book 1. I am excited to see Rory's story though.

Complicated Girl was most definately the correct title for this book. In this second book in the Baker Street Romance Series we meet Meenie (Megan). You will have to read it to find out the reason behind the name. She is one complicated, confused and at times frustrating young woman. Then there is Drew the sophisticated and obviously hot dentist (wish he was my dentist) who comes into Meenies life by chance when he accidentally attends her support group thinking he was at an investment seminar.
The way these two interact is at times simply hilarious,  l laughed so much reading this. I also loved the reappearance of some of the characters from Blue Roses, it was good to see how they were going as well. As always Mimi does an amazing job with her characters, and her humour shines through. Drew somes up Meenie very well "l find you invigorating....you're a little complicated, l'll give you that,  but you're the good kind of complicated"

I love quirky characters. They are unique, fresh, and full of individuality. In this case, hold on to your ears! Meenie is extremely honest to the point of being rude, crude, and totally offensive. And yet... there is a sweetness about her and an innocence that makes her endearing.

Meenie, nickname given to her but her name is Megan, has lived the shadow of her perfect sister Teenie (Tina). Her self esteem could not be lower! She is 27 years old and has finally realized how lonely she is. If she could possibly reign in her mouth or perhaps filter some of what comes out of it, she thinks perhaps she might make friends.

By accident, Drew comes into Meenie's life and what a breath of fresh air he is. Immediately, he brings change and turmoil to her life. I am still laughing and will not look at plyers the same way in the future. OUCH!

This is a funny, quirky story of loneliness, damaged egos and romantic honesty that is raw at times. Thank you heaven for Drew!

Second book of the Baker's Street series isn't was good as the first book Blue Rose.

The author wrote the main female character well, described her personality in details and thankfully not caught up too much on her physical attributes. But despite much to the author's effort, I still found "Meanie" hard to like. I suspect the author had a hard time liking "Meanie" too, and it shows, subtly, but it does.

Drew's character, I felt, should get in a little deeper and his portrayal in the book is a tad 2 dimensional, he is cute, he looks like GQ men, but he lives in the book, existed purely in the eReader. Drew didn't jump out of the page, live and breath with us like some other book characters does.

I didn't skip any paragraphs, I read the whole book word for word with no eye rolls and even a little chuckle. Not the best compare to her Peaches Monroe books, but still an enjoyable read

I could see early in the book on how Megan earned the nickname Meenie. She says awful, but laugh out loud funny at times things to her support group members, her sister, her sister’s friend, and the men she dates. Dentist Drew doesn’t mind her abrasive ways, but she misinterprets some of his comments when he talks the same way back to her, and their relationship has plenty of up and down, angry and happy moments. She acts juvenile at times with what she says, throwing ice, her inappropriate shirts, having no clue about pretreating stains, and too many other things to list. I would never deliberately mess with my teeth just to have an excuse to see a guy. Her cat Muffins who was Megan’s person alarm clock and thought with his stomach was funny. I loved that the support group called themselves carboholics because of the baked goods Megan brought. I liked Drew’s app inventor brother Alan with his elaborate dinner parties and hope he finds his own love interest in a future book.

Megan “Meenie” Gardenia is an interesting woman who is full of snark, angst, moodiness, and her own style of witty banter that no one really seems to understand. She’s a little spitfire but not always in a good way. She attends a weekly self help group therapy session “to help others understand what’s wrong with them “ but I think deep down, she knows she really needs the help herself.

Dr. Andrew “Drew” Morgan stumbles into the group therapy session by mistake and decides to stay because of Megan. Drew hasn’t had a relationship in two years after a bad breakup with his high school sweetheart and that leads to some insecurities. They have an awesome time bantering back and forth until Megan eventually takes it too far, causing drama.

Wonderfully written to show how you can begin to overcome your quirkiness and/ or flaws if you start to believe in yourself and try to change for the better. Even Rory starts to work on her quirks and I hope her story eventually gets told.

Megan is definitely a complicated girl. She has lived in her sister Tina's shadow, at least that is how she views her life. As kids they became Teenie and Meenie, well, this nickname almost pushes Megan to be mean when she really isn't … she does say what she thinks without any type of filter which is usually her downfall. Drew Morgan is confident and a bit cocky the first time he meets Megan and let's just say Megan did a great job of shocking him just a bit. I laughed and at the same time felt sorry for Megan. From here we get to experience Megan's journey of finding herself and realizing she is more than a nickname. The chemistry between her and Drew is amazing, I had the sense from the first look that Drew could be the one to truly understand her. Another fabulously sweet, sexy romance from Mimi Strong!

I was lucky to be gifted this book by the author for an honest review. I loved Blue Roses and I love this book just as much. This book follows Megan, she has trouble with relationships and letting people get close to her. For comfort and advice she goes to a support group. There she meets a hot guy, who looks hot, dresses smart and seems too good to be true. Sparks fly and they flirt with each other, but again Megan pushes him away, but Drew comes back for more. Can Megan let Drew in and possibly have something special or will she put the barriers up and miss out on a chance with a great guy, this book is a hot, sexy, funny, witty, sweet romantic read, that you don't want to put down. Cannot wait for book 3.

I had a hard time getting into this book. Megan, aka Meenie, is just strange and it was hard to like her. Meenie is blunt and to the point, and tends to push people away with the things that come out of her mouth - particularly men. She likes to talk about balls, and when she gets mad at a date she tells him "You're short, and your goatee makes your mouth look like a lady's privates." I wanted to like her and empathize with her, but it was really hard. Drew is a dentist who shows up at Meenie's self help group and it turns out she can't intimidate him with her harsh comments. I did like Drew, but it was hard to understand his motivation for pursuing Meenie. There were some sexy moments and humorous moments, so I'm rating this book 3 stars.

This book is a great continuation of Baker Street Romance Series. This book is about Megan the sister of Tina who we meet in Blue Roses. Megan or Meenie which ever you want to call her is more of a mess than her sister that is for sure. Megan she has a tough exterior, but all that does is cover the insecurities that she has. Megan takes a journey of self discovery that is fun and frustrating. Mimi Strong knows how to write stories that take you on a journey with the main characters and you can feel it in your bones. Can Drew be the man that Megan needs? This book is fun, frustrating and full of laughs. If you are looking for rough graphic sex, then this is not the book for you. If you read Blue Roses then I definitely recommend this book.

Megan Gardenia doesn’t have many friends. If they don’t like her jokes or take offense, she puts the blame squarely on them, never on herself. She attends a support group which she insists has nothing to do with her since she has no such problems. But she does contribute by telling others what they problems are and how to fix them.

When a new person, Drew, joins the group, he doesn’t think he has issues either. But like Megan, he keeps coming to the meetings. And the sparks sure fly when he and Megan are together! Megan realizes she is drawn to Drew but she can’t focus on the reality in front of her. In her trying to figure it all out, will she destroy any chance of a relationship with Drew?

This is a story of a girl who has difficulties in making relationships, she has a sharp tongue, makes a lot of acid comments, and places the responsibility of her failed relationships on others, until she discovers that life is not as she seems to see it! How many girls and boys do we meet during life that are exactly like Megan and what have we done about them? How to help them? Maybe this story gives you some hints as to better relate with people who believe they know it all and do not have any problems (or so they express themselves...). Really entertaining, I had good laughs and I´m looking forward to reading the next book by this author. It also gave me food for thought!
