Luiz Eduardo de Oliveira (born on December 13, 1944 in Brazil),[1] more famous under his artist name LEO is a Brazilian comics creator.

After having graduated as an engineer in mechanics, Oliveira left Brazil because of the military dictatorship that was in power at the time. He went first to Chile, but the following year saw the Chilean coup of 1973. This led Oliveira to leave, moving to Argentina, from where he finally returned to Brazil in 1974.

He found work as an illustrator in the advertising industry of São Paulo, before once more leaving Brazil, in 1981, this time moving to France, hoping to illustrate comics. However as the Franco-Belgian comics industry was in recession at the time, he was forced to work in advertising once again, although he managed to get the occasional piece published in L'Écho des savanes and Pilote.
In 1986, with the assistance of Jean-Claude Forest, Oliveira began contributing to the youth dedicated magazines of Bayard Presse. He illustrated true stories for Okapi magazine. He then recounted Mahatma Gandhi's life in the album Gandhi, le pèlerin de la paix, for Astrapi.

In 1988, the comics writer Rodolphe asked him to provide the artwork for his stories. Their collaboration proved fruitful, producing 8 albums of material for their Trent series and 5 for their Kenya one.

In 1993, Oleveira finally achieved an old dream when Dargaud agreed to publish his first solo series: Aldébaran. In 2000, after 5 volumes of Aldébaran, he launched Bételgeuse, which was nominated for the Prize for a Series at the Angoulême International Comics Festival in 2004.

Slighty abrupt end to the sequence, and this sequence hasn't had as much of the weirdness that I like in Leo's books, but the last few pages bring everything together in an intriguing way. The awkward censorship of the English version is made rather obvious by the same scene not being censored on the cover.

I read the entire series in a matter of three days, seldom a comic feels THIS exciting and compelling for me. Amazing simply amazing... Definitely a must read for sci-fi fanatics.

It’s both intriguing and frustrating that after so many books Leo refuses to offer answers to many of the mysteries he introduces in these books. This is not a criticism, though. In fact, it’s commendable. We understand so little of our own planet that to quickly understand histories, alien cultures and other-worldy biospheres in just a handful of pages wouldn’t reflect reality. Instead, what Leo has aimed to harness is curiosity, wonder, and, amongst it all, the best and worst that humanity can offer. Regardless of the amazing new planet, and the flora and fauna it offers, we remain humans reacting with base instincts, greed and altruism in equal measures.

To tie everything up in neat little packages, all explained and understood, would be detrimental. And so, when you get to the end of this final volume, don’t think you’re going to get a tidy conclusion. You’ll understand a little more, but equally you’ll be left wanting, and that’s fine. We live in a universe of incalculable size with myriad wonders, and we are but a pinprick within that enormous canvas. Insignificant, but fascinated by it all all the same. That’s a brave position to take up as a storyteller, but Leo manages it by driving the narrative through the eyes and experiences of the people, not least lead character Kim. Their explorations and discoveries anchor the tales and carry you along on the adventure.

I’ve said very little of the book itself, but that’s largely because I don’t want to spoil anything. Expect weird creatures, strange scenarios, and humans struggling to make sense of it all. All as it should be.

I’d love to read more of these, but Leo’s not a young man. I can only hope he’s got the time and the ability for a little more.

Kim and friends are exploring the new planet reached through a mysterious cube; their mission, and they themselves, are put at risk by dark political machinations back on Aldebaran, and they must deal with the threats of hostile but insentient life-forms and justly suspicious humanoids on their new planet.

Perhaps a bit more starkly than before, Leo looks at migration, integration and xenophobia in a society which thinks of itself as advanced, and links this inevitably with colonisation and exploration. The art is lush, the plot is standard but fairly rattles along, and the characters are all pretty distinct and believable.

This concluding chapter of this story arc is basically a survival story as the expedition to the mysterious planet are cut off from returning home and the political situation on Aldebaran is also limiting options for Kim there as well.
It's a a story about the lengths someone will go to, including the degradation of 3 intelligent species, simply to further their own agenda. Lots of twists and surprises and weird alien creatures.

A bit disappointed by the ending, which recall too much some idea already develop by previous SF writer.
However, always there is some excellent idea in this comic book, and it was very pleasant to read.

Gute Story, aber in diesem Abschlussband ging es zu sehr hopplahopp. Wollte Leo seine üblichen 5 Bände schreiben und musste dann auf 3 kürzen? So fühlt es sich zumindest an. Sehr schade.

Brings the series to a satisfactory ending, even if some of the supposedly scientific explanations of the background to the story are pretty dodgy.

Opět o něco epičtější a zajímavější dobrodružství než ta předchozí. Tentokrát to důrazem na spolupráci a na objevování cizího světa leckdy připomínalo klasický Star Trek, a to tím spíš, že je na konci jedno velké odhalení, které každého fanouška tohoto univerza zahřeje u srdce.

This is the third album in the fifth cycle of Leo's wonderful and epic science fiction saga, which started way back with the first cycle, Aldebaran . It picks up directly following the events in the previous album.

As with in my review of that previous album, I will not really offer any detailed review but simply state that if you have not read the previous albums in the Return to Aldebaran cycle (or the four preceding cycles, really), this is not the place to start, and if you have read the previous albums, you will want to read this one as well to see how Leo closes the cycle.

For my own part, I am now very much looking forward to reading the next cycle, Neptune, which apparently consists of two albums.

Once again, a disappointment (OK, not the tale)

It is sad for me when one of The Worlds of Aldebaran cycles ends. I always want more! At the same time, I am eager for the next cycle. These cycles are not cliff hangers but leave many unanswered questions and unfulfilled desires nonetheless. For example, I want to see Lynn again. Small detail, but....

That desire all by itself suggests how complex the characters can be as well as how intricately woven the narrative is. This entire mega series is worth being read & reread many times.
