When Colorado Penn finds an unexpected package on his front step, his life will be changed forever.
Colorado Penn is living the dream. Starting goalie for the Arizona Raptors when in season, lead singer for a hard rock band when summer rolls around. He’s the quintessential free spirit who’s making sure he enjoys all the carnal blessings of his athleticism, and gritty singing voice. Now the Raptors are moving into their first playoff appearance in years, but the arrival of an unexpected package means that hockey may have to take a backseat to something way more important. Instead of the usual undergarments from adoring fans, he finds a newborn baby with a small note tucked under her carrier, naming him as the father. He refuses to give up his daughter and is determined to be the kind of father he’d dreamed of having. But to keep Madeline, he’ll need help, and he’ll need it fast. Enter handsome emergency manny, Joseph. They may be opposites, but Colorado starts to see that Joseph’s stable, calm influence makes his chaotic lifestyle choices seem less appealing. There’s something about the man that soothes not only his infant daughter but also the wild child inside Colorado.
Joseph is one year away from getting his degree in planetary science, working cover shifts at the planetarium, and pulling in income with short term manny gigs. Stars collide as he provides emergency childcare for the wild man of hockey, a man who moves so fast through life that he doesn’t know how to stop. Homeless, and caring for his niece, Emma, fate brings Joseph into Colorado and baby Madeline’s life. Madeline is a sweetheart, and Colorado is trying his hardest to make the best decision for his baby girl. He offers his home and an indecent salary, to keep Joseph in his life until summer’s end. Colorado brings mysticism and metal to Joseph’s sanctuary of science, but somehow Joseph needs to tame this shooting star and create a family. Nothing in the contract said Joseph had to fall in love to make that happen, but when it’s time for him to leave, will the void in his heart ever heal, or will it remain as cold as space itself?

This book was nothing like I was expecting at all and my reading experience was made even better by it.
When I knew this was going to be Colorado's story, I was excited to see where RJ and Vicki would take him, especially with the unexpected baby on the doorstep plotline.
I'd been expecting some utterly feckless, uncaring self-proclaimed 'manwhore' and instead I got someone so radically opposite that.
Someone whose heart was as big as the sky which Joseph was so fascinated by. Someone whose capacity to love was as massive as his talent on both ice and musical instruments.
Someone who I fell in love with from the off, rather like Joseph did when he realised just how much Colorado was committed to his daughter Maddie.
There's a beautiful feeling of calmness throughout this book, even with the chaotic nature of both the ice hockey, the metal band, and the unexpected baby.
Colorado is a truly fascinating character, he's a mix of free spirited adventurer and a man truly committed to fighting for his new found family.
He falls for Joe's intelligence, his dedication to his sister and niece, his shyness and his awakening passion.
This, surprisingly given who it's centred on, is pretty low steam. While Colorado and Joe have passionate kisses and clear chemistry which sparks between them, the pace towards a physical intimacy is slow.
And it works completely for both the characters and the narrative. Joe is more than just a sexual encounter for Colorado and Joe's lack of experience makes him question all his feelings.
With hilarious additions from Colorado's aging hippy grandmother, to family dramas with Joe's sister, the plot weaves its magic throughout.
The ice hockey is on point as always, and there's the usual appearances from the rest of the Raptors to bring more fun.
I'm not sure where else this series is going but it's been a pleasure.
#ARC kindly received from the authors in return for an honest and unbiased review.
I have to say this is my favorite in the Raptor series.
Seeing Colorado change throughout the series has been fun - he’s still crazy as ever(GOALIE).
When a baby is dropped off on his doorstep Colorado has to face facts and make changes in his life. He hires a nanny who ends up being Manny Joseph who had just lost his job and is trying to figure out how to pay for college and help is sister and niece out.
When Joseph first arrives he’s convinced Colorado is in a gang and threatens to take the baby to Child Services before he is convinced Colorado is the starting goalie for the Raptors and not a drug dealer or doing drugs.
When disaster strikes for Joseph’s sister and niece - Colorado tries to step in and help. Joseph not wanting charity can’t figure out if Colorado wants him to stay around for his help with the baby or because Colorado wants more.
My only complaint (typical problem for a fast reader) is I wish the story was longer 😊

I think Colorado is up there as one of my favourite characters in this series, along with Ten and Ryker.
This was really entertaining and barely had any hockey in it at all so it wasn't as well balanced as the other books, but Colorado's character progression was really nice to see. Joe was just a science nerd version of Apollo, but with a less outgoing personality. The self-doubt and insecurities were almost exactly the same as Apollo's, but it was a nice end to the Arizona Raptors part of the interlinking series.
School and Rock is a part of the Arizona Raptors series and while this particular installment doesn’t rely heavily on having knowledge of the prior books, reading the rest of the series will probably make things easier. Having read all of the Raptors books thus far and its sister series, the Harrisburg Railers, I have to say that School and Rock is one of the weaker entries.
The overall story seemed rushed and almost haphazard in its delivery. There just wasn’t much structure to it and, while it wasn’t terrible, I don’t think it added any layers to the Raptors cannon. Nothing of real value happens and, as a result, the characters read as rote and formulaic. Additionally, this series seems to be drifting further and further away from hockey and without those occasional moments of action, the narrative tends to drag.
Joseph is trying to finish school and take care of his sister and niece.
Colorado is all about partying, his rock band, and hockey. Then he finds a tiny bundle on his doorstep with a note saying “she’s yours”. Suddenly his priorities shift, and Maddie becomes his everything, well, her and her manny Joe.
I have loved all the Raptors. However, Joe and Colorado were special. I liked how the author turned the good time man into a loving and caring father. Not out of obligation, but for pure love. Their romance was surprisingly sweet and not rushed. As always, family is at the heart of the story.
It’s no secret I really enjoy these authors hockey stories and haven’t read one I didn’t like. Great characters with adult problems and solutions make their characters special. Well done.

I'm not sure where to begin or what to say. I don't want to spoil any of this for the reader. Anything I want to say will give away great parts and what fun would that be? So , in that light I will only say this.....this story is full of fun and sexy times. It also has a few shocking things happen, sad things and has some great snarky dialogue. It was great seeing some of the guys from previous books, as always. I am loving Maddie, Simon, Natalie ,Emma , Colorado's grandma of course Joe and Colorado. Such a wonderfully heartwarming, loving, SEXY, snarky, group of people! Had a fantastic time with them all. MUST read!
Damn, once again RJ Scott and VL Locey impress the hell out of me. With School and Rock, I was hooked immediately. The fifth book in the Arizona Raptors series, it is fantastic!
Colorado's a hockey player and a the member of a rock band, who suddenly finds himself with a baby left on his doorstep. After reading about his man-whoring ways and crazy behavior throughout the series, I was floored with the Colorado we get now.
Omg, I had no clue how much I would fall in love with Colorado. I was totally unprepared for my feelings. He is just wonderful. So wild and unpredictable before Maddie came into his life. And each day he calms down more and more. His inexperience with babies adds a whole lot of charm to this read.
And then there's Joe. Oh how I love Joe. His scientific mind that is always working and calculating was something I didn't think could work well with Colorado. But damn, it does.
Their story includes some hot first times and plenty of beautiful extended family moments. Hell, I love the big family that is formed. It is just such a feel-good read.
These two are an absolutely fabulous couple. They both find what was missing from their lives in one another. Though you will find some passionate moments, this story is all about the emotions. The development of their relationship is the key to this tale.
The writing is simply beautiful. These two authors continue to create mesmerizing characters who ooze charm and love. The authors excel in combining the chaotic nature of Colorado's life and career with amazing moments of calmness, romance, and love. And then they continue to add in some entertaining side characters who add plenty to the tale.
School and Rock is perfectly wonderful. I love every single second of this RJ Scott and VL Locey book. If you've been reading this series throughout, you will fall in love with this book too. Be prepared to read it in one sitting. And if you haven't yet starting reading this series, what are you waiting for? Just read them all and fall in love with everything these authors gift us readers with.
I've said it before but I'll say it again – I am not a sports fan but I do love reading sports themed romance books. The hockey books written by RJ Scott and V.L. Locey are among my favorites. We met Colorado Penn in earlier books from this series. He's been a bit of a wild guy character but that's all about to change.
After a night of sexy shenanigans and a wild party at this house, Colorado is shocked to discover an infant on his doorstep. He doesn't know it quite yet but his life will never be the same. Once he reads the note saying the baby is his he knows that he must take care of her and love her like his father never loved him.
Joseph enters the story with kind of a bang. He's passionate about his job at the Tucson planetarium – maybe a bit too passionate. He gets into a dispute with a teacher and ends up losing his job. He really needs a job so he can continue helping to care for his sister and her five-year-old daughter. His next best option is to try and get a job as a many.
I loved everything about this story. I enjoyed watching Colorado go from his wild and crazy ways to being an over-protective father and a generous man who wants to support the person he is falling for. Joseph has to learn to accept help when it's offered but it's not easy for him.
There were a few surprises in this story that I didn't anticipate and they made it all the more engaging to read. Colorado's bodyguard, Simon, was a great secondary character as was his grandmother, Alchemy. If I were to say a lot more it would be too spoiler-y and I don't want to do that. If you've been following this series, or if this is the first book you've picked up (it can stand alone), I think you will enjoy reading about Colorado and Joseph and the people they care for.

Oh this is such a fun book - and whilst I do believe that you could enjoy it as a stand-alone, it was incredibly rich as the next book in the series. I had to award it five stars, because it just was such an engaging, amusing and romantic read - from a fairly unlikely source ... (one time) emu owning, free loving Colorado!
We start with a scene which I have to admit had me envisioning a situation much like one seen on Lucifer, as he starts his day. It is a very effective way of bringing the hedonistic lifestyle that Colorado is living. Until a doorbell ringing changes everything.
Joseph is so completely the opposite to Colorado that it is hugely entertaining watching them come to the realisation that their usual type is irrelevant when faced with the reaction they have to each other. As they both come closer to each other by understanding what is important to each other, and how it fits in with their roles and family responsibilities. The inequality of financial means is balanced by Joseph's skills and knowledge of how to care for Maddie, and his intelligence.
It was really refreshing to get Joseph's views on hockey as someone who is new to the sport. That he has to watch someone he cares about being in goal, and attacked by the opposition is endearing and amusing. We also get to experience Colorado's mental state as he has to combine the life of a starting goalie, a new father, and really attracted to a single someone.
We get plenty of team catch up time, and time with Colorado's grandmother, who is hilarious, and reminds us why he has a free spirit attitude. A fabulous new addition to the series, thank you!
It was great seeing Colorado mature as the book progressed. He still kept his friendly and funny personality, just grew up and went after what he wanted. I really felt for him at the start when it kind of felt like everyone was against him when he found Maddie. Yes he was a screw up at that point and they all had a point in what they were saying, but the guy took immediate responsibility for the baby and wanted to keep her and everyone was like but we have a game to play. I’m glad the club worked with him to get him custody.
Now Joseph was a totally different character. A total nerd but one who was prepared to stand up to the jock and do what was right for the child. Their first interactions were entertaining. I enjoyed watching Joseph also come out of his shell and he really bloomed under the attention of Colorado, as he was generally interested in what Joseph was saying.
The secondary characters were a hoot. I really enjoyed the interactions between Colorado and Simon his security. Simon gave back as good as he got.
This was a sweet romance- a slow burner that gradually builds the passion and chemistry between the two characters until you are at bursting point wanting them to come together. Lots of love, humour and some drama thrown in, made this an easy and enjoyable romance read; great for cuddling up and reading in the cold weather.
Colarado and Joseph were the perfect example of opposites attract. They complimented each other perfectly. Colarado had this kind, gentle, sweet side to him, which I'd not expected. It was a total surprise, and I loved it. He's also such a hippy, and his attitude to all things was perfect.
Joseph was a sweet guy, with his head literally in the stars. I loved his thought process, it was so funny how he tried to find a formula for everything. He's also a good guy, and although a little on the niave side, he was determined to be his own person, no matter what. The scene where he meets Colarado for the first time had me laughing out loud. The humour and love kept going right to the very end.
Even though the romance is a slow build there was plenty in the story to keep me entertained. I loved the banter between the characters, some real LOL moments. Also, it was great to meet Ryker and Jacob again. It really is a story you can connect with, and two main characters you can pretty much fall in love with! An epic epilogue to finish it off as well!
This has got to be one of my favourites from these two ladies. Such a beautiful, whimsical romance. It really was just what I needed at this time. I loved the whole opposites attract theme! Colarado's free wheeling hippy persona, and Joseph being an out an out nerd worked perfectly. I'm certain I smiled throughout. Thank you ladies.
I was given a copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.
I’ve been waiting for Colorado’s story since he first joined the Raptors and his book is well worth the wait. Colorado’s new nanny, Joseph, is the stabilising influence he never knew he needed and the two men balance each other beautifully.
Anyone who loved Owen Wilson’s Hansel in Zoolander will love Colorado. Colorado might be a whole lot more intelligent than Hansel but he has a similar alternative lifestyle, the same innocent warmth and he constantly makes me laugh. Joseph is a whole lot more straightlaced. He’s a science student working as a nanny and his structured, responsible life is in complete contrast to Colorado’s easy chaos. The two men are brought together by Colorado’s daughter and while it is Colorado whose life changes the most in this book, Joseph is a whole lot more relaxed and easy going by the end.
This isn’t as sexy as some of the books in this series. Much of Joseph and Colorado’s time is occupied by their families and Colorado’s work. The chemistry is great between them but while there are a couple of steamy scenes, there are more warm family moments than racy scenes in this book.
I really enjoyed this story. I keep waiting for all of these interlinked hockey series to start to feel formulaic but each new couple feels special in their own way. Colorado is right up there with Stan when it comes to favourite hockey players and I absolutely love Colorado and Joseph together. Both Colorado and Joseph’s families are brilliant and Colorado’s grandmother is particularly special.
I just have one quick (slightly off-topic) rant. This is the second American book I’ve read in the past month where a character has to choose between paying for essential medication and keeping their home. How on earth has this become acceptable romance novel plot material? To a non-American reader, these storylines are heartbreaking and way too common. Americans really need to sort their shit out and demand universal healthcare. In the rest of the developed world, access to healthcare and medication are basic human rights - not expensive luxuries.
This is the fifth story in the Arizona Raptors series, and I do suggest you read the previous stories, this way you are not wondering who all these crazy characters are and where they fit in. Now, since we first met Colorado in the first story we have seen all his crazy antics. On the morning of one of his legendary parties, he gets a surprise left on his door step. Now Colorado is scrambling to get his party life behind and make a stable life for the baby girl he never knew he had or even wanted. With this change comes of course the need for a nanny, in comes Joseph a manny that was hired to help out. Now all Colorado has to do is not mess this situation up, easy peasy; that is until Colorado realizes that he wants Joseph to be a part of this situation. Will Colorado be able to make the transition from party animal to stand-up father figure? Will he scare Joseph off?
Given just how chaotic Colorado has been, it didn't surprise me when his story was just as chaotic to match. This was the story I have been looking forward to the most, I wasn't sure how his story would swing (both ways maybe?) but this did not disappoint! I give this 5 stars.
I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.
Colorado and Joseph are complete opposites. Colorado is a professional hockey player and the leader singer of a metal band and a free spirit. Joseph is a science nerd studying astronomy while taking care of his sister and niece. The scene where the guys meet for the first time is so fabulous and fun. There were several scenes in this book that had me chuckling and this was one of them.
This story has lots of good elements including some hockey, a cute baby, a way out there Grandma, a bit of drama and of course a sweet romance all kicked off by the life changing moment when a baby is dropped on Colorado’s doorstep. The differences between these men made this such a fun story to read but I loved how they complement each other.
School of Rock gave me lots of warm fuzzy happy feelings as well as a few laughs. I completely adored Colorado and Joseph and I hope the authors consider writing a few more stories in their world so we can spend more time with them. A few cute little novellas would be great.
Rocker and hockey goalie Colorado has lived his life my his own rules. He has enjoyed various men and woman while keeping his bad boy persona. But when a little surprise bundle is left as his front door, his responsibilities change in a heartbeat. With the help of scientist/manny Joseph, who has his own family troubles, Colorado navigates his way to becoming the best dad he can be while juggling his music and ice time. When tragedy strikes will Joseph and Colorado accept that their feelings are honest and true? Or will Colorado overstep his bounds by trying to help? Bringing a baby into this character's life was a joy to read. The instant his daughter becomes a priority the change in him is emotionally heart warming. Although this is part of the Raptor's series, R.J. Scott took the reader away from the ice and brought them directly into the home. A beautifully written surprise baby story.
What a joy to read. Without giving anything away I want to say I was a bit startled at how the first chapter began. I though oh! oh! where are these two taking this book but it soon became clear.
This is a book about how opposites attract and you couldn’t find two more opposite men then Colorado and Joseph. Colorado is a free spirit sexy rock star/goalie who meets Joseph the adorkable stargazing nerd and what follows is a slow burn romance full of great characters, dialogue, humour, family and some emotional highs and lows.
This book has an abundance of excellent side characters that add to Colorado & Josephs journey. Alchemy the hippie granny, Natalie & Emma the sister & niece, Simon the bodyguard and all the returning characters of the Raptors team. And of course Maddy the reason the stars have aligned for Joseph & Colorado.
I was gifted an ARC in exchange for and honest review. I highly recommend this book and all the ones that came before. 5 star read.
I've been a fan of these authors since forever and I followed this series since the first book. While I enjoyed the other installments immensely, School and Rock was just so much more...more family, more fun, more love...
I simply adored Colorado and Joseph the minute they hit the pages. And Maddie - such a cutie pie. Ok, the adults had a complicated relationship, with lots of this isn't the right time, we shouldn't, we couldn't. But they were so wonderful together, sweet and tender. They took their time to build a relationship, but the slow pace was so much worth the wait. Their journey together filled my heart with warmth and happiness and watching them build their family was amazing.
School and Rock was sweet, exciting sexy and romantic, and I could've read on and on about Colorado, Joe and Maddie.
This was a fun read. All the characters had quirks that made me smile. Colorado had a life of over the top for everything . So his life took a quick left turn when a bundle of Maddie came and made him think of more than himself. Joseph has a family with his sister and her daughter but he has dreams for himself. Together they will find a balance in each other that will make them prefect.
This is the fifth book in the Arizona Raptors Series. I have really loved this series. I love how the authors bring their characters to life. The characters were well developed and having seen Colorado’s antics in the previous books in this series, I must say I was surprised at how his story ended. I loved it. The pace was great and it was hard to put down. Another great hockey story by these authors.
This is an atypical Jock falls for Nerd story. A feel good story with little conflict, a lot of exciting hockey and a delicious, fulfilling slow burn romance. It has kids. Colorado and Joseph make my heart happy, they just mesh from the start. Simon and Natalie are great additions, and I want to be Alchemy when I grow up! I know too many 5⭐️ reviews are supposed to be a bad thing, but ⭐️‘s where they’re due!
What a wild crazy ride. Two men facing incredible life changing moments, find a way to move through them together. Who would have thought a hockey playing rock star and a space loving equation solving nanny could work. But it did. One brought order the other brought fun and it was great. This was a quick paced book to be aware of that. I do wish we could have dived deeper into both characters and I wish it was so quick, I have some remaining questions but good book overall
I’ve been waiting on Colorado’s story and it was soooo worth the wait. Joseph was such a science geek, loyal to his family and loved Maddie. So you knew when the hockey/rockstar, good hearted, family oriented Colorado meet Joseph that sparks was going to fly. So an amazing story. Loved it. This is my favorite one from this series.

I’m a sucker for a dude getting his collective sh*t together for a child, so this book hit me right in the feels. Colorado is such a great character and I loved everything about his crazy sweetness. His cutie, the science nerd, is pretty cool although he didn’t jump off the page like Colorado. Curious about whether there are more of these coming.
I rated this book 4.5 Stars, so I rounded it up to 5 Stars. I’ve been a fan of RJ Scott and VL Locey’s work since I was recommended this book through Amazon back in 2020, and have read pretty much all of their books, both individually and those that they’ve co-written. I’ve never gotten around to posting a review so here goes. I’ve decided to re-read all of their MM Hockey Romance books again so I can review them, which is as follows. I really enjoyed this book, and thought that Colorado and Joseph were amazing together but it wasn’t long enough to flesh out their romance, as Colorado did a complete 180 going from all about free love, into all about monogamy and settling down, and creating a family with Joseph and Colorado’s baby daughter Madeline aka Maddie. Colorado is a complete lose cannon, and has caused his captain, the coach and the owners of the Raptors a lot of headaches, especially when he nearly got arrested because he didn’t want to give up his pet Emu, Kricker when Animal Control came to collect him, since Colorado was breaking a lot of laws by keeping a wild animal.
I loved that as soon as Colorado found Maddie on his doorstep with a note telling him that she’s his, he was scared sh*tless but as soon as his captain Vlad, Coach and one of the owners of the Raptors, and Coach’s partner Mark show up to help with his current situation and Child Protective Services were mentioned, Colorado was adamant that Maddie wouldn’t be raised by someone else, even if it wasn’t proven that she was his yet. Vlad, Coach and Mark talked to Colorado and told him that he can’t be selfish and that he needs to do what’s best for Maddie so he hands her over to Mark but explains that he’s going to do blood tests straight away, and if Maddie ends up being his he’s going to keep her. Joseph is extremely smart and working towards his degree is planetary science while working part time to help support his sister Natalie and his niece Emma. Natalie lost her husband to cancer before Emma even was born, so five years prior. Their little family is struggling, as they need to cover the cost of Natalie’s insulin.
Joseph ends up getting fired from his part time job at the Planetarium after he got in an argument with a teacher about Pluto not being a planet and things got heated, where the orbiting Jupiter knocked the teacher over. Joseph tried to plead his case with his boss saying that it wasn’t his fault, but it didn’t work. Natalie told him that maybe he could get some work through the Nanny Agency until he finds another part time job. Joseph is offered a contract as a temporary nanny, that pays extremely well. Joseph has no idea what he’s getting into and when he walks into Colorado’s house to find Maddie screaming and badly in need of a diaper change being held in a tattooed man arms, the house is complete mess, and the man looks like he’s been on the three day bender. It doesn’t help matters when Colorado and his security Isaac are screaming at each other, and Joseph wants to take Maddie as he believes that she’s unsafe and thinks Colorado is in the gang life. It doesn’t take Colorado much to stop Joseph by explaining the situation to him because at face value it looks really bad. Even though Joseph was threatening to take Maddie away from him, he loved how fiercely protective Joseph is of Maddie.
Joseph agrees to sign on as Maddie’s temporary nanny, as it’s obvious that even though Colorado looks like a mess, he absolutely loves Maddie and is worried that her mother will show back up and take Maddie. He’s got no idea who she could be, they’ve narrowed it down to five different women. Colorado is all about free love as he’s pan but meeting Joseph makes him think about having that special person in his life, as something just clicks between them. I really enjoyed how Colorado and Joseph relationship progressed, as it was slow burn. Even though their wasn’t much physical intimacy between the two of them they connected on a mental level. I still think their chemistry was completely off the charts. Maddie was such a wee cutie, and so was Joseph’s niece Emma. I loved seeing Colorado mature and completely change his behaviour and lifestyle to be the best dad possible for Maddie. That’s true unconditional love right there. I’m looking forward to reading more books from their MM Hockey Romance Universe, and Christmas Lights is next, which is a novella from the Owatonna Series about Ryker and Jacob, and being able to spend Christmas together on Jacob’s family farm. I’d definitely recommend this book, series, universe and both authors to everyone.
When Colorado Penn finds an unexpected package on his front step, his life will be changed forever. Colorado Penn is living the dream.
Our story opens with the adorable but clumsy Joseph losing his job. The job he loves at the museum which helps him pay his way through college and help his sister (a widow with a young child) to keep a roof over all of their heads. When will Jospeh ever catch a break, or even just get a job he likes that he can do alongside school?
Then we meet Colorado. A part-time hockey goalie super star and part-time rock super star who is living the life you imagine a young wealthy super star to live. Sex drug and rock and roll, and hockey!
Then EVERYTHING changes in a heartbeat. Colorado has a baby girl left on his doorstep with a note proclaiming him the father. Since he is about to step on to a plane with his hockey team, the timing could be better. Colorado needs to win the match, find the truth of the baby’s paternity and find himself a nanny, stat.
Of course, our little romantic hearts are beating harder at this! Joseph is looking for work and has experience of child rearing. Could this be a match made in HEA heaven?? Yes! But of Cours ethe road to happiness doesn’t run smoothly.
On the day Jospeh turns up to Colorado’s house to interview for the job of nanny, or rather Manny, he sees drugged up and hung over rock stars and fears for the child. This is exactly what Colorado wants to see - someone who puts his baby girl first!
Their attraction is simmering and Joseph is afraid of what it means, or doesn’t and then his sister suffers another terrible blow.
This story is full of twists and turns, joy and fear and the HEA is full-on adorable. I absolutely loved it. So much that I will be seeking out the first four Raptors books to read asap.
I received a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
4.5 rounded up because this one was just that damned close to perfect for me.
Colorado Penn is the goalie for the Arizona Raptors and he’s also a Rockstar. He’s had an interesting life and believes in living life to its fullest. He loves hockey, rock & roll and sex. The last thing in the world that anyone would mistake him for is a responsible adult ready to dawn the mantle of parenthood and guess what…they’d be wrong.
Joseph’s a science geek and he’s struggling to get his degree in planetary science and help take care of his sister Natalie and her little girl, Emma. Working at the local planetarium whenever he can helps with the finances and Joseph loves being there but when things don’t quite work out he finds himself falling back on his other love caring for children.
When Colorado suddenly finds a small baby on his doorstep with a note attached saying ‘she’s yours’, he doesn’t waste hesitate or think twice about taking responsibility for the adorable baby that’s been thrust upon him.
As much as I’ve been looking forward to Colorado’s story, I also have to admit I was a bit apprehensive going into things as to how much I’d truly enjoy this. For one rock stars aren’t really my thing but also being a hockey player mitigated that detail for me. I was also nervous that this all seemed a bit to ‘fairytale-ish’ for me and I thought maybe this will be the one…this will be the book in the ‘Railers’ & ‘Raptors’ stories that just wouldn’t make the grade.
I was also determined to give this one change I’ve read all of the ‘Harrisburg Railers’ and it’s spin-off series both ‘Owatonna U Hockey’ and the ‘Arizona Raptors’ not to mention a whole lot of other stories by these authors and they have not failed me yet so I figured the least I could do was give Colorado and Joseph a chance.
So what happened one might wonder…well…to be honest I fell in love with the free-spirited but surprisingly responsible, loving and generous Colorado and the adorable, geeky and surprisingly outspoken when it comes to what he truly cares about Joseph.
Hypothetically on paper there’s a laundry list of reasons why these two men shouldn’t really have worked but when you read their story that these two authors have collaborated to create and let your heart stay open to the possibility of them…they not only work…they’re magic.
As with previous stories the reader is also given a cast of secondary characters both enrich the story and add depth to the main characters as their relationship grows. We’re given glimpses of characters from past stories as well as meeting new characters such as Colorado’s very free-spirited grandmother, who raised him. His bodyguard Simon, who tries really, really hard to keep Colorado on the straight and narrow, his bandmates who live for rock & roll and the next party. Joseph’s sister Natalie and her mudpie loving 5-year-old daughter that he’s helped raise and adores as much as if she were his own. And of course, the adorable baby Madeline who also happens to unknowingly be a matchmaker extraordinaire.
It takes skill to write a book that I will unabashedly say I enjoyed but to write a book that leaves me sighing with happiness and contentment because I feel like I really couldn’t have wanted anything more from it, takes not only skill but the magic of a true storyteller or storytellers, as the case may be.
************************* An ARC of ‘School and Rock’ was graciously provided by the authors in exchange for an honest review.
The setup for this book was good, but it fell short on delivery for me. Colorado has always been an interesting character in the book since Coast to Coast, so I was excited to see whoever calmed this wild beast of a man down. I liked Joseph a lot in the beginning chapters and then he just fell flat for me. He wasn’t really pursuing college in the book, or getting his dream career. I get that the focus was him being an emergency manny, but I thought since his dreams were so big that we’d see him do something else by the end of the book at least.
Colorado having a daughter was the first thing to tame his wild ways, but he was also tempered by Joseph since they had complimentary personalities. Colorado forced Joseph to try new things and live outside his carefully constructed reality. Joseph helped Colorado be more structured and soothed his wild/chaotic nature. I love nanny/manny books, so I was going into this with high expectations.
While I enjoyed it, I wanted more from Joseph. I also wanted more of their family and friends, which is a common occurrence with the books from this duo of authors. We saw Emma & Natalie a few times, but Joseph having been there for Emma’s whole life, he was pretty MIA in the book. I also was surprised the nanny agency didn’t check up on them, or that we didn’t see CPS since Colorado kept saying there were always checking in. When Joseph saw his first hockey game, he’d fallen in love with it and wanted to go to all of them. However, I don’t think he went to another one in the book.
This had barely any sex scenes in it. There was quite a bit of kissing and then two scenes total I think towards the end. For Colorado to be pansexual and sleeping with everyone with a pulse to going cold turkey for so long, it seemed a little odd to me. I’d say probably 3.5 out of 5 stars. I liked seeing characters from previous books, and Maddie was adorable too.
