During the events of Doctor Who: Ravenous 2, Liv Chenka left the Doctor and the TARDIS behind. Just for one year. A year during which she would live on Kaldor, and get to know her sister Tula all over again.
But Kaldor is going through a period of tumultuous change. Technology is changing at an advanced rate - the robots are evolving, artificial intelligence is adapting, and with these changes so politics is altering too. Dangerously.

Continuano le indagini delle sorelle Chenka sui misteri che ruotano attorno alla Compagnia e a fatti inspiegati nel passato della stessa. Nel frattempo i Figli di Kaldor stanno organizzando una rivolta antiVOC, che potrebbe avere esiti imprevisti.
3.2 Circuit Breaker by Guy Adams
Secondo episodio dedicato Poul e Toos, due dei sopravvissuti dell'eccidio del Storm Mine 4, nell'episodio The Robots of Death, con il quarto Dottore e Leela.
Poul cerca di riprendersi dalla nevrosi che lo accompagna dai fatti di Storm Mine 4, ma resta coinvolto in altri incidenti che potrebbero minare il suo recupero.
3.3 A Matter of Conscience by Lisa McMullin
Mentre i Figli di Kaldor decidono di passare ai fatti, Liv e Tula stanno recuperando quelle poche informazioni collegate ai fatti di Storm Mine 4.
Spuntano i nomi di Poul e Toos, ma anche quello di Uvanov, collegato a uno dei componenti del gruppo di terroristi e misteriosamente scomparso.
Presto vari nodi verranno al pettine, ma ci lasceranno con un cliffhanger di notevoli dimensioni.
Il terzo capitolo delle avventura di Liv su suo.pianeta natale si sta collegando sempre di più all'episodio della Classica che lo ha generato.
Tra intrighi della Compagnia, moti rivoluzionari e misteriosi esperimenti, la situazione si rivela sempre più ingarbugliata, ma l'interesse resta alto e l'aggiunta di altri due volumi ai quattro previsti non fa che ben sperare.
Il passaggio di testimone alla regia da Ken Bentley a Louise Jameson (Leela) non fa che aggiungere un tocco familiare al tutto.
Chissà che, prima della fine, anche lei e il Dottore non intervengano per aiutare le ricerche sul Storm Mine 4.

1. THE MYSTERY OF SECTOR 13 di ROBERT WHITELOCK.
Liv sta indagando sui Figli di Kaldor - cercando qualsiasi attività insolita su Kaldor. Ma quando la sua caccia la porta in un magazzino abbandonato, potrebbe aver fatto il passo più lungo della gamba... E mentre lei è via, Tula sta scoprendo che alcuni problemi si trovano un po' più vicino a casa.
2. CIRCUIT BREAKER di GUY ADAMS.
Poul è tornato a Kaldor City... e Toos sta facendo del suo meglio per aiutarlo a riprendersi. Dopo degli eventi preoccupanti in un hotel locale, si ritrova con un altro crimine su cui indagare. Ma ci sono alcuni misteri che non dovrebbero essere risolti?
3. A MATTER OF CONSCIENCE di LISA MCMULLIN.
I Figli di Kaldor stanno intensificando la loro campagna anti-robot mentre Liv e Tula stanno intensificando la loro ricerca. Ma anche se si stanno avvicinando ai sopravvissuti di Storm Mine 4, la loro comprensione degli eventi su Kaldor sta per cambiare irrevocabilmente.

Continuiamo con il terzo volume le vicissitudini delle sorelle Chenka su Kaldor, ormai sempre più turbato da disordini sociali. Nel primo episodio, “The Misterty of Sector 13”, le indagini di Liv la portano nella parte più povera della città, arrivando in un capannone da far venire letteralmente i brividi. Nel frattempo Tula si rende conto che qualcuno sta insabbiando tutti gli attacchi avvenuti a causa di robot, incluso l'episodio originario sul Storm Mine 4. Non è una storia in cui succede molto, ma entrambe le protagoniste si addentrano piano piano nei rispettivi misteri, che diventano sempre più fitti. Inoltre menzionano Toos e Poul, facendoci domandare come siano collegate le loro storie e quando si incontreranno.
In “Circuit Breaker” si ritorna su Toos e Poul i quali, ritornati alla città di Kaldor, sembrano inizialmente coinvolti in una storia molto simile a quella del volume precedente, ovvero un'indagine di omicidio. Ma questa volta non si tratta di una normale investigazione. Presto Poul si ritrova a cadere in una spirale discendente verso il proprio inferno personale, esplorando i limiti della sua sanità mentale causati dalla robofobia e dai traumi subiti in passato, e portando ad una scioccante rivelazione finale che lascia di stucco. I toni sono molto più noir, andando ad esplorare la bassezza umana tra violenza e perversione. Toos è qui meno presente, ma sfoggia sempre la sua determinazione nel risolvere i misteri e la sua empatia nei confronti dei robot. Tuttavia dopo le rivelazioni dell'episodio precedente ci si domanda se, come con Poul, sotto quella facciata si nasconda ben altro.
Infine, nell'ultimo episodio, “A Matter of Conscience” sono presenti tre linee narrative: una riguarda Liv e Tula, alla ricerca dei sopravvissuti del Storm Miner 4, la seconda ci mostra il punto di vista dei Figli di Kaldor, ora più attivi che mai in atti di terrorismo, mentre la terza riguarda degli esperimenti per estrarre la coscienza umana prima della morte. Le tre cose sembrano distinte e separate, ma vengono abilmente intrecciate fino a convergere in una sola storia. Ancora una volta le indagini di Liv e Tula sfiorano la storyline di Toos e Poul, ma senza toccarla, tuttavia resta il mistero di cosa sia successo al terzo superstite, Uvanov, e quale fosse il suo ruolo tra la Compagnia e i Figli di Kaldor. Anche questo è un episodio pieno di intrighi e colpi di scena che mette in dubbio la distinzione tra alleati e nemici.
In generale questo volume si concentra quindi sulla fascia più bassa della popolazione, costretta a condizioni di vita infime a causa della disoccupazione causata dall'uso sempre più frequente dei Robot come manodopera a basso prezzo. Da questo punto di vista appare come un parallelo fantascientifico alla Rivoluzione Industriale e al Luddismo, un disagio sociale di non facile risoluzione perché non ci si può schierare da una parte o dall'altra. Liv e Tula devono quindi trovare una terza via, quella della verità, per cercare di dipanare questa matassa di cospirazioni e complotti. Sta di fatto che ora sono più unite che mai, e Tula inizia ad essere influenzata dalla determinazione della sorella.
Tra tutti gli attori, che sono come al solito al top della loro performance, devo qui fare una menzione specifica per Jon Culshaw, che ancora una volta si riconferma come un poliedrico camaleonte capace di dare vita ai personaggi più disparati.
È perciò un altro successo, un altro passo in avanti in una serie dai toni molto costanti ma dalle nuances assai variegate, che si sviluppa lentamente ma fornisce una vivida impressione del mondo che sta descrivendo.

"The Mystery of Sector 13" — Good episode, but mostly for setting up further mysteries to be addressed later. A whole bunch of citizens from Sector 13 are falling ill. As Liv tries to uncover who or what is behind it, Tula discovers that someone is scrubbing all evidence of previous "rogue robot" incidents.
"Circuit Breaker" — Toos and Poul investigate the "murder" of a robot, leading them to a weird hotel where people go to fulfill odd fantasies with the aid of robots. Dark and disturbing, ending on an even darker note. Possibly the best episode of the series so far.
"A Matter of Conscience" — Liv and Tula are on the trail of the mysterious Ky Uvanov, one of three survivors of the Storm Mine 4 incident. (Toos and Poul being the other two.) Meanwhile, the Sons of Kaldor begin making more aggressive moves. And somewhere a robot is experimenting with transferring consciousness.
It all really comes together in that last episode, and it's anyone's guess where it's all heading to next. It appears dealing with the Sons of Kaldor is only part of the story of "The Robots." The Company has its own secrets. And it looks like Liv and Tula will be stuck between these two forces -- and so will the Kaldor Robots.
Not entirely sure whose voice that was at the very end, but I think it was supposed to be Poul. What that means for the next installment is anyone's guess. However, it does appear that David Collings recorded for Volume 4 before his passing. But even if David Collings is written out of the series for Volume 5, it looks like there's a built-in escape hatch for keeping Poul around.
Really interested in seeing where this is going. This might be one of the best series BF is producing right now, and I'm so glad it's been extended to six volumes (for a total of 18 episodes) . . . and if it goes beyond that, sure. I'm in.

It is no secret that Liv is one of my favorite Big Finish characters.
So I am very happy that we got a whole series of her doing what she does best on her home planet Kaldor.
Now we have reached Volume 3 of the series, and all I can say- wow.
This one was amazing.
This starts out innocently with a nice exciting mystery, and the two leads do some investigating into all the sinister goings-on in Kaldor city. This includes sneaking about in creepy old factory buildings, which gave me a nice nostalgic X files vibe.
However, the situation quickly develops into a gripping political thriller (with plenty of creepy sci-fi elements) that had me at the edge of my seat. The unfolding story has great pacing, with underlying threat and you can really feel the stakes.
It also carries some social commentary (as Sci-Fi and Doctor Who often does) with an important message.
Liv and Tula continue to be a great team and their banter and relationship is very believable.
I absolutely loved this, and it might be one of the most exciting things BF has done all year!
One little minus- including Louisa Jameson in a speaking role. I am aware of the lockdown situation and the smaller cast. But her voice is so distinctive, having her appear took me out of the flow for a bit.
I am curious how the setup will be resolved in the last set. But so far, this has been a fantastic ride.
I am also curious about the mysterious story with Toos and Poul- I was a bit confused by the second episode and I am still wondering how it fits in the overall narrative. Sadly, we will have to wait for the last set of stories to finally find out.
Argh, 6 more months to wait!
