This one started off strong but then seemed to get mired up in minutiae once Jericho returned home.

I found it became a bit repetitive and, while I really liked that it was an established relationship, the rest of the story confused me quite often.

Timescales were difficult to understand and I couldn't decide if that was supposed to be deliberate or not.

Still, there was a decent sense of foreboding throughout and I loved all the secondary characters.

As with book one, the story seemed to wrap up rather quickly.

Review:
Old West + witches + an established (but somewhat renewed, since one character thought the other was dead) mlm romance with some sexiness and some sweet hurt/comfort!

I feel like it was sometimes written in a way that made it confusing to keep up with who was talking or what was happening, but that could've just been me because I was having a bad day and zoned out a bit (my fault, not the book's). I also never really understood what the Eaters were though, and I don't think that was just me.

The disability rep seemed decent! Jericho was blind, and I don't think it was cured by the end. He was able to use magic to help him with some things, like shooting, but I don't think the magic ever made him able to see. And I liked that Owen never thought anything of it, just immediately accepted that his lover had become blind and rolled with it.

Overall, I liked the relationship, and this was a sweet, quick read.

*The books in this series are set in the same world but each one functions as a standalone about completely different characters, written by different authors. It helps to understand certain things about magic and the town if you read in order, but I think you could read these in any order without any real issue.*

*Rating: 3.5 Stars // Read Date: 2021 // Format: Ebook*

Although Forged In Magic is the second Tin Star Witches: The Witches of Ruby Gulch book, it' s a shared-world series with different authors giving us different characters/separate stories, so it can be read as a standalone.

Jericho is a range witch, with Stella and Asta his familiars/guardians (horse & hawk respectively). Forged in Magic, the second book in the Witches of Ruby Gulch series, opens with him facing peril. Jericho's lover, Owen, is Ruby Gulch's smith. We first see him several years later working his forge and foundry, still in mourning for Jericho who is missing, presumed dead. Owen thought Jericho lost, but he had been attacked whilst defending a group of magical children. He had been several years in hiding protecting them from the Eaters - the creatures that had attacked the wagon train they were travelling in. Now he has returned to Owen blinded and suffering from a magical sickness, but determined to go back to rescue the children.

I really like the premise of this book - action and adventure whilst pulling off a daring mission to bring the children to safety; witches and their guardians; sinister 'baddies' and the love of the two men. Actually that's one of the things I like best - that the MCs are already in a committed relationship. Both are strong in their own way (whether that's physical or magical strength) but it's clear they balance each other: Owen is forged in iron (solid, dependable) whilst Jericho is forged in magic (magic is always a bit more ethereal).

Overall, though, I think the story lacks a bit of balance - Jericho's recovery when he returns to Owen could be a bit shorter. There's quite a bit of dialogue repeated which we could take as read, but I really enjoyed found-family vibe in the trek back to where the children are hiding and the action in the rescue. Balance aside, Forged In Magic is a decent, quick read...3.5 stars.

I liked so many things about this story, but there was a lot that just didn't work for me. The first chapter grabbed me and boy, was I intrigued... until I wasn't. 😭😭😭

As a couple, Jericho and Owen were the best... I just wish the story had lived up to the "greatness" that was them. This was by no means a "bad" read, it was just a VERY confusing read.

Did you ever read a book and at the end realize you had more questions than when you started? Yeah, that was this book... 🤦‍♀️

Oh man, I was really looking forward to this one after Ruby Run but it just wasn't for me. This author's writing can be hit or his for me but in this story it just made me confused and frustrated because I don't think anything was fully talked about. Owen and Jericho have a good relationship and it was good that Jericho was able to come home and they were able to rescue the kids.

I received a copy of this book and am giving an honest review.

I'm a simple woman: I pick up a book, see it's written by B.A. Tortuga, and I put it back down.

I've read four or so B.A. Tortuga books at this point (don't ask me why) and this is probably the worst of the bunch. I was intrigued by the book's blurb and I like this series, but reading this installment was a mistake. The entire novel is nothing but the same conversation between the same two characters over and over again in incomplete sentences. What little plot Tortuga cobbled together was weak, incredibly simple, and overall uninspiring. Thank god the first novel in this series, written by Elizabeth Silver, had world building because this book was so light on description of both the characters and surrounding world that it could've taken place in a paper bag for all the difference it made.

The only way I can think to sum it up is that this book is not good because the writing is not good. Ninety percent of this book is mushy emotionalism in different locations, but done in such a way as to say nothing interesting about either main character.

After this, I will again respect my policy of not reading B.A. Tortuga books.

There was so much feeling and trepidation that filled the prologue that I was emotionally primed for whatever the rest of the story offered. And then we meet Owen who is gruff, gritty, and grieving. The tone was really set right from the start with how harrowing their journey might become. Add in a wonderful guardian, some truly interesting and humorous side characters, and this was a solidly enjoyable story.

But I have to mention the stuttering feel of the writing, the dialogue, and the timeline confusion. I didn't think the story actually flowed smoothly from one moment, one crisis, one passionate embrace to the next. The transitions and feelings that connected each of those could have been polished and finessed so it could effectively carry the feels we were set to expect with the beginning of the story. It wasn't clear how much time passed between the tragedy and the reunion either. Though if it was and I missed it, that's my bad, but seasons were mentioned, Owen was uncomfortable yet resigned to the idea that his beloved was dead and so he sought physical affection from purchased bodies, and the appetites of the Eaters in relation to how often and how much they fed from Jericho's magic...all of these things pointed to a longer time apart, but it also felt like it was maybe not very long? I just didn't like constantly wondering whenever some time frame was referenced and I had no actual reference to refer to.

The side characters, the number of animals, the sweet children, the very clear love between the MC's, and the interesting element that was the Eaters were all parts to enjoy in the story. While not my favorite book in the series, it's a solid addition and hasn't given me any reason to not continue with the next book I can get my eyes on.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author, and I’m looking forward to reading more! I found her writing style very easy to read and was drawn into the book and its characters very quickly. I thought the way the author described the characters’ emotions and reactions was very powerful. The world building in this series is fabulous, and I loved how the old west mixed with the paranormal/magic in this story.

I loved Owen and Jericho, and how they are each other’s strength and heart. Their relationship is a very easy companionship as well as connecting strongly at an emotional and physical level. Owen’s very practical and protective of his witch, and I liked how Owen has his own strengths yet can’t see them. I liked how Jericho compensated for his lack of sight, and his relationship with his guardians.

As with all of the books I’ve read of this series so far, I thought the guardians stole every scene they were in. The last scene in the book was fabulous in that regard, and made for a very satisfying finish to the story.

I also liked Barthe and Samuel and would love to read more about them. I hope we haven’t seen the last of this series with these four books. Although it feels like rich, and well thought out world, it still feels like there’s more of its history and people to explore.

The children have a lot of potential and very distinct personalities, even the little ones. I liked the theme of found family. The eaters were scary and I loved the descriptions of how they made their prey feel, and I thought that made them all the more terrifying.

I'm a bit conflicted about this book. I liked the fact that it revolved around an already established couple, Jericho  and Owen, and the plot was definitely intriguing. The first chapter got me filled with excitement, but sadly I kinda lost it as the story progressed. The chapters concerning Owen's recovery were too many, and filled with so much professing of love that my eyes crossed. This part of the plotline was overdone, some things in the story weren't explained enough and others I thought irrelevant.

The thing is, I had so many questions and I kept reading hoping for answers. Jericho was returned home with missing memories and blind. How did that happen? Were the children real, or only a figment of Jericho's imagination? If they were real, were Jericho and Owen even in time to save them?

There was a creepy factor all through the book- obviously ,with 𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒔 involved (what those creatures were was explained in the book). The rescue mission was interesting and suspenseful, I liked the group of friends who chose to embark on the venture, and I had my fingers crossed hoping for their success.

As a whole I found Forged in Magic enjoyable, although sadly not among my favorites written by this author.

Jericho is a range witch. Leading a wagon train west, they are attacked by monsters and all are presumed dead.

Owen is an iron smith. The iron does what he wants and he craftsmanship is excellent but don’t call him a witch. Owen has mourned Jericho for several years. When his man returns, blind, almost dead, filled with magic, he does everything he can to save him. Jericho tells Owen they have to go back and save the children.

This book had strong characters. I liked Jericho but Owen was a little stilted. It took time to become used to his style of talking. I loved Stella, Jericho’s guardian, she has an abundance of personality. The other characters, and their assorted familiars that join in the rescue were well done. Nice story, set in an old west type world. Filled with magic, nightmarish evil, and love that just doesn’t give up.

The Tin Star Witches series is written by different authors. I don’t think they need to be read in order. I’ve read two and they aren’t connected other than through the town of Ruby Gulch.

I received an arc of this book.

I missed the first book of this series, The Serpent's Coil Book #1, so I was going into this, Forged In Magic Book #2, cold. So far there are four books in this series and each one has a different contributing author though I believe each one is loosely connected. I was at a loss as to figuring out the plot; blacksmith lover believes his partner died at some previous time, partner returns blinded, poisoned by magic, vowing to save a wagon train's children. Each man possesses a magical power as a guard from the evil elements of Ruby Gulch, NM. Some elements of this story were strong. The love shared between Owen (blacksmith) and Jericho (range witch) was very moving. Both were driven by a love that never surrendered, a sacrifice that each was willing to accomplish to return to the arms of each other. The mystical elements of Jericho's familiars Stella and Asta were wonderful additions. The evil presence of The Eaters was an interesting twist of evil. I've never read of these kind of characters before. This book was given to me as an ARC from the GRR ARC team.

I am slowly becoming a huge fan of the M/M cowboy's books especially when include paranormal elements and BA Tortuga is a genius on this topic. So when I received an ARC of the second book on the series, and read who the author was, I immediately jump to the chance. I don't want to say too much to avoid spoil the book for you, so I just going to say this. On one hand you have a very lovely relationship between Owen and Jericho, how they learned about themselves together and how their love grew stronger with every step and challenge they confronted. On the other hand, you have a plot complex and interesting involving a dangerous rescue, magic, loyalty and courage against evil monsters. All together made for a wonderful reading!!
I received this book from Gay Romance Reviews and I am voluntarily leaving an honest opinion.

I wanted really badly to enjoy this more than I did - having said that, I really enjoyed the strong characters, the slightly horror-esque premise of the book, and Tortuga's writing, a style I enjoy enough to consider most of her books a must read.

I did find the pacing just a bit off, and some of the prose has me skimming slightly to get to the more active portions of the story. I think as well, and it's an entirely me issue, that with self-isolation and the pandemic situation going on while I read it, I just wasn't in the mood for the portion of the book where Owen was nursing Jericho.

Overall, this isn't a bad book, and I'll probably re-read it in the future (which I think I'm more in the mood for a slightly creepy tale of magic induced illness and missing children!).

I just love a well written fast reading fantasy espically when it grabs hold and pulls you into the story from the first page bringing it to life so you feel like your right there. Then keeping you so engrossed in the magic of the tale you can't put it down till you find out what is going to happen next and how this is going to end. Jericho was lost and Owen thought he had died, so when he returned sick and almost dead it was everything Owen could do to help him get better, now for the hardest part yet, they have to go back to rescue the children but no matter how this journey to find the children and rescue them, they will never be apart again, together forever

Great adventure

This was a really good book. It drags you in and won't let you go.

I really enjoy B.A. Tortuga's writing style. It matches her characters personalities so well.

Jericho and Owen were birth amazing men, and what they are being put through at me at the edge of my seat at times.

I really loved their relationship, so full of love, acceptance and understanding.
The plot itself was very interesting, heartbraking and full of adventure and fighting.

Overall a great book

~3.5 STARS~

The first part of the story was a bit slow and drawn out for me, but overall, I like this story. There’s a bit of magic, scary-ish creatures and some action and I found once the story got rolling it was entertaining.

Jericho and Owen are already in a relationship which is something I don’t normally read in books, and I like how strong they were together. It was obvious they loved and really cared for each other. I really liked both Jericho’s familiars, especially Stella.

ENG- So well well well… well I hesitated a bit before starting it because the paranormal aspect scared me a little. But I don’t regret taking the leap at all. I loved this novel. I read it in a few hours and I couldn’t let it go. I read it in one go and I loved every page of it.

So yes, we always find slang which is always a bit difficult to read when you don’t master it (which is my case). But once you get used to the idea and go over it, everything is fine.

I really liked the universe proposed by the authors. It is a bit obscure at times but sufficiently explicit so as not to be embarrassed in our reading. The fantastic elements are coherent and intriguing, slightly creepy and very well mastered. The different magics are described enough to be understood and the mythology of the universe is well developed.

I loved the characters in the novel, whether the main couple or the secondary characters. I found the intrigue very well led and I let myself be carried along the pages without ever losing my interest.

I loved the love story between Owen and Jericho. I found her very beautiful and very strong. I really had a great time reading.

Once again, all the elements that I like in the novels of the author are there and I can only advise you too much about this novel.

This is book 2 in this series and it did not disappoint. While it can be read alone, I really recommend you read book 1. Jericho has been gone for a year and Owen thought him dead. When Jericho finally makes it home, he is blind and poisoned by magic, and trying to get back to save some children. The children are trapped in a cave by the Eaters, nasty creatures, and the ones that blinded Owen. With help from friends, and Owen, they save the children and return home. However, it's not that simple and more danger happens once home. No spoilers from me

I've read this before, I wasn't impressed then and I'm not impressed now. If you've read any Tortuga books before you know there's a very distinct similarity with all her characters and plot. In this one, the guys always describe each other as "lover" repeatedly- no alternative or change. Then there was the three chapters of Jericho appearing grey and oozing red dust, semi-babbling about the babies while Owen kept dismissing him. Bailed on this after five chapters.
No bueno, no recommend-o.

I absolutely adored this book by BA.
It hit all the right notes for me, second chances, western, magic, laughter.

I loved the fluid writing style as it makes you feel that you’re right there in the story, hearing the characters speak You can feel the dust on your skin.
This book is a standalone but you should definitely read the other books in the series.

I loved Forged in Magic. I mean, it’s BA Tortuga, and that’s guaranteed for me to be a great book, but this one I read all in one go and I loved the adventure of it. I loved that it’s set in the wild west but with magic. That was so fun. I loved the world there, it was fun to read, the love between Jericho and Owen was so sweet and hot. I also loved that they went for the children. I definitely recommend this book.

Ok

I never really felt the urgency and suspense that I should have with the Eaters. They are never really described other than they’ll eat magic people’s souls through their eyes. That sounds terrifying but I never felt it. The whole book was like that. We’re told but it’s superficial. The relationship was sugary but sometimes seemed like they were trying too hard. Overall it was only ok.

Good

This book is part of a series written by multiple authors...

Storyline
Good, but at times a little bit confusing

Characters
Not much description on the characters, but a few. They were all likable, and the guardians are cute and funny.

I was interested because it was a different setting than any I’ve read before. Cowboys and magic. A lot of the speech was like an old western. the couple seemed devoted to each other. It was okay but not for me.
