The reigning toast of the Season, Lady Evangeline Saltisford is betrothed to the most eligible bachelor in London and a scant few weeks from having everything she has ever wanted. Until danger comes calling, and she is forced to accept aid from a decidedly unlikely—and infuriating—source.
Devil Winter is the illegitimate offspring of a wealthy merchant and a prostitute. He detests fancy aristocrats and has no patience for a cosseted duke’s daughter. But he will do anything for his family, and when his older brother asks Devil to play bodyguard to Lady Evie, he has no choice but to accept the loathsome task.
Evie wants nothing to do with the boorish man from the rookeries who favors growls and glowers to polite manners. She is perfectly happy with her handsome, aristocratic fiancé. At least, that is what she tells herself. Until her gruff protector reveals a side she never imagined existed. A side she finds increasingly difficult to resist.
Devil is determined to eliminate the threat to Evie and cull her from his life. But being forced to remain by her side proves not so loathsome a duty after all. And before long, protecting the stunningly gorgeous duke’s daughter is only the beginning of what Devil wants to do…
USA TODAY bestselling author Scarlett Scott writes steamy Victorian and Regency historical romances with strong, intelligent heroines and sexy alpha heroes. She lives in Pennsylvania and Maryland with her Canadian husband, their adorable identical twins, a demanding diva dog, and one zany cat.
Wow. Just when I think Scarlett could write any better, she does. What a wonderfully delicious tale! It was breathtakingly romantic. When I read that Devil was to be the hero for this story, I was disappointed. All he ever does is grunt! But what amazing grunts they were. This was so romantic and they don't even consummate their love until the HEA! All that tension was just boiling over and it made this book so good. He did try and push her away. He was pretty cruel and I got all choked up at one scene but she was an awesome heroine and she never backed down. I loved that about her. They were perfect together. This was a great read. I can't wait to read about Blade now. Keep them coming! Can't get enough of the Winters!
Opposites do attract!! Another fun and addictive read. This series is a hot, romantic and witty read. This is Book 9 in the Winter's series. They are standalone but should be read in order for the complete Winter's experience! This book is about Lady Adele's twin sister, Lady Evangeline betrothed and beautiful headstrong! Although they are twins, they do not look alike, Addy is dark haired beauty and Evie is a blond beauty. And, someone shot at her and her betrothed while on an outing. Addy is married to Dom Winter's, former rake, and ownoer of the notorious gaming hell. Devil Winter is charged with protecting her and her betrothed, but she objects. He could care less if this beautiful blue stocking and daughter of a Duke doesn't want his protection! Their attraction is mutual, but no one will admit to it! Devil is a gruff large man, very handsome, with bright blue eyes. Instead of babysitting her and her fancy betrothed, Dom decides Devil and Evie should go away from the city until he can find out who is trying to kill Evie. While together they share alot and she learns alot about Devil Winter and his family. This is such a page turning story. Action, suspense, witty and for me, emotional and gooey over Devil Winter's and his siblings upbringing. A definite reread for me!!! Oh and very tastefully written love scenes!!! And a happily ever after and now I cannot wait for the next book!
I was given an ARC by the author for an honest review.
4.5 stars.. It's been a while since I picked up a book about the Winter clan. This is Devil and Lady Evie's story. Devil is tasked to be the protector/ bodyguard to Lady Evie as someone attempted to do her harm while she was out in the park with her fiancee ,and also was shot at while in her bedroom at her sister's townhouse. At the beginning, these two were like oil and vinegar, but they soon began to see each other in a different light. Evie makes a bargin with him..she will teach him to read and he teach her how to whittle, but Evie wants to learn other things such as kissing. This was a good read, the s3xxy times were passionate and I enjoyed this couple together. Good epilogue where they are married and expecting.
This book is a so beautiful that I wanted to cry and laugh at the same time most of it. A diamond of the first water, Lady Evangeline Saltisford is betrothed to the most eligible bachelor in London. When danger comes calling, she is forced to accept aid from her sister Adele’s political family, the Winters. Devil Winter is the illegitimate offspring of a wealthy merchant and a prostitute. He detests fancy aristocrats and has no patience for a cosseted duke’s daughter. But he will do anything for his family, and when his older brother Dom asks Devil to play bodyguard to Lady Evie, he has no choice but to accept the task. Evie is perfectly happy with her handsome, aristocratic fiancé and wants nothing to do with the boorish man from the rookeries who favors growls and glowers to polite manners. Until he reveals a side she never imagined existed. A side she finds increasingly difficult to resist. Now they have to fight the strong attraction that keeps throwing them in each other arms, and the feelings that their mutual lessons are awaking in them. This book is soooo good. I couldn´t stop reading it. Evie is so amazing, so strong, so sure of herself. Once she discovers her feelings for Devil, nothing is going to stop her for having him, not even his own demons. Devil is one of the sweetest and most intense heroes I´ve ever read. He has such an awful past, but a pure internal world. His soul is something you want to treasure for yourself. And Evie is nothing if not intelligent for wanting to spend her life by his side. This is a Beauty and the Beast tale with bodyguard theme and Romeo and Juliet conversations (and quotes). What could possible go wrong in this book? You will never want to reach the end! I love all the Winters (both brunches) but this one for sure has a special place in my heart. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I loved this book, couldn't put it down. Evie and Theo's story will make you smile and cry. Evie (Lady Evangeline Saltisford) and Theo (Devil Winter) dislike each other on sight yet there is a simmering awareness of each other that neither will acknowledge. After someone fires a shot at Evie and her betrothed Lord Denton, her sister Addy (lately married to Devil's brother Dom) has entrusted her twin sister's safety to her husband's brother Theo a large hulking man who would do anything for his brother even if this means watching over a nib's daughter. Theo very reluctantly agrees to be Evie's bodyguard for a fortnight hiding away at his half-brother's spare townhouse in Mayfair. During their time together their attraction and awareness of each other grows, as each finds out more about the other. Evie's strives to find a way to the man behind the walls that she reads Romeo and Juliet too every evening, until a sudden thought occurs to her as she pieces the little telling snippets that he has let slip about his past can he read?? Is that why he listens so intently, is that why he curses his brain. So she blurts out her question ' "Can you read, Mr Winter?" "No." A lone, clipped word was his sole respone. ' So she offers a trade of sorts she will teach him to read and he will teach her how to whittle wood. However it is not whittling lessons that Evie has in mind, in fact she has lessons of a more intimate nature in mind ones that involve lips, hands and lots of touching and kissing if her heart and body has it's way. As Theo's lessons progress Evie learns that Theo only struggles with some words and dancing letters and that he can with slow methodical teaching start to overcome his latent dyslexia that is at the root of his problem. Soon the simmering attraction and the absence of a chaperone starts to fray at Theo's waning control forcing him to announce ' "No more lessons today" ' forcing Evie to remind him that this is an exchange of skills and that the skill she wishes to learn is not whittling, but kissing. Theo tries to deny her, but in the end the temptation to give in is too great and they kiss on more than one occasion despite Theo's best efforts to show her that unlike her sister and brother they can not be together as she is a Duke's daughter who is betrothed to another and that he is the illegitimate son of a merchant and a covent garden doxy. However Evie sees past all this to the kind, tender and caring man underneath the gruff, hard exterior who she is starting to lose her heart too, Theo is terrified that his past will come back to haunt him and that she will leave him as Cora (a past love) did before her, to the extent that he leaves her in the protection of her sister Addy and his brother Blade to seek out the person who wishes to harm her. Leading him to seek out Jasper Sutton hated enemy of the Winters who is also being threatened by their common assailant. Resulting in an inevitable shooting that leads to death, injury and pain for both Theo and Evie. Theo survives, but is wounded and gravely ill with fever, Evie strives to nurse him back to health and to her, even though he has repeatedly sent her away. They unlike Romeo and Juliet have their happy ending and overcome their obstacles to gain their happiness.

Starring Lady Evangeline “Evie” Saltisford and Mr Devil Winter.
Tropes: Enemies to Lovers... Bodyguard... Lessons... Beauty and the Beast-ish... Lady and a non-peer Anti-Hero.
These Winter men get yummier and yummier... and Devil is the yummiest of the bunch. Honestly, I wanted to pluck him out of the pages and hug him (among other things). Such a gruff anti-hero fighting to keep his emotions hidden from Evie... and failing miserably because he wears his heart on his sleeve. I know, right?!?! I know I say this all the time with every book in this series, but Devil may be my very favorite Winter.
Evie is every bit as delicious as Devil. I love that her goal is to make him smile... and she succeeds a lot, which totally melts my heart. She’s a very strong heroine who stands her ground and fights for what she wants. And when it comes to breaking down the walls around Devil’s heart... girl brought a sledge hammer, mmmm’kay?!?!
Together, Evie and Devil are perfect for each other. Their lessons, their cat and mouse tensions... oh they gave me so much feely-feels and were constantly making me giggle. They are one of my favorite book couples of 2020. I love then soooo much!!
I am sooooo in love with this world that Scarlett Scott has created. I love the Winter family... and the bastard half are so wonderfully raw, gritty, and delicious. I want more, more, more!!! And can’t wait to read Blade’s story next!!
Scarlett Scott is one of my all time fave authors. She writes... I read and ugly cry AF... it’s as simple as that. Love her books!!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily review it and the comments are 100% my own.
My star rating: 5 stars x 100 Ugly cried AF. Major book hangover. Characters and storyline were freaken amazeballs. Made me wanna hug the author for writing a book that gave me all the feels!! Will definitely be re-reading this story over and over and over again!!
Very much enjoyed Devil’s story, can’t imagine him with a society Lady but, the story is awesome.
Devil fights this romance from page one, his usual grunts, growls, and under breath comment are a real pleasure to read and imagine. They make what is quite a sad story lighthearted and entertaining, and so addictive.
To think of him sat in the corner of the room on a little chair, that he’s probably wedged in, being insulted by Lady Eva Saltisford is a wonderful picture.
I really enjoyed the book, I’ve a feeling Devil may be my favourite if this Bastard Winters set .
I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review
Winters Woman is the ninth story in Scarlett Scott’s brilliant Wicked Winters series. It can as all her others be read as a stand-alone without affecting the understanding of the story but I would recommend you read them on their own merit. Its a fantastic series. Lady Evangeline Saltisford is the toast of the season and is recently betrothed to the most eligible bachelor in London. After the scandal surrounding her twin sister Adele’s marriage to the powerful and disreputable Dominic Winter, Evie is finally close to achieving the status she has wished for. The last thing she needs now is to be forced to go into hiding with the uncouth and boorish Devil Winter – even if it is to save her life after a couple of unexpected attacks. Devil Winter is the illegitimate son of a merchant and prostitute. He has spent his life fighting for survival in the rookeries and along with his half siblings has risen to a position of power. He is as far from Lady Evangeline’s world as day is from night and that’s the way he wants to keep it. But when his brother Dominic asks that Devil help protect Lady Evangeline, Devil can’t say no. During their enforced time together, Evie discovers that behind the gruff and rude exterior lies a side of Devil that she never could have imagined existed and one she is finding impossible to resist. But can she convince Devil that their worlds can collide, and they can find happiness with each other. Whenever I get hold of a Scarlett Scott book, I know I am almost guaranteed a sleepless night. Once picked up I find it impossible to put down and this was exactly the case with Devil and Evie’s story. I fell in love with Devil and Evie. Evie is a fabulous heroine. She is strong, confident and doesn’t give up. Once she discovers Devil’s true nature, she falls hard for him and isn’t deterred by his rejections of her. She learns to look beyond his at times cruel behaviour and resolves to fight for him. I loved that she insisted on calling him by his true name and not his moniker. Devil is surprisingly such a sweet hero. He has spent his life hiding his weaknesses and cultivating a hard reputation which is essential to survival in the world he grew up in. Betrayed by his mother and his first love he is leery about love, but he is intensely loyal to his family. He never feels worthy of Evie and does all he can to turn her away. But I was cheering when he finally admits his true feelings and sees possibilities for a happy future. This is a novella and a fairly quick read but Scarlett writes in such a way that you are left with a feeling of completion and always with a smile on your face. There were some very sweet moments – the entire thread of reading through Romeo and Juliet, Evie’s use of Devil’s real name, the lessons as well as some very passionate encounters. The secondary characters were also great. It was lovely to see Dom and Adele again, we learn a little more about Devil’s half-brother Blade and I have to say I’m intrigued by Sutton. The only thing I was a little unsure about was the villain and the reasons for the attacks on Evie but that is a very minor niggle. The epilogue was perfect. I was gifted an ARC for my honest opinion. I cannot think of a single reason not to buy this. Sweet and sexy and satisfying – what’s not to like? Waiting impatiently for Blade’s story next.
Lady Evangeline ( Evie) and Devil Winter, certainly didn’t like each other at their first meeting and they had some humorous exchanges. Devil had a very hard upbringing and he has a past experience that makes him hold back on romance. As they slowly get to know each other so they are more attracted to each other but they are from very different social levels. Evie also shows a different side to her character. There is also a danger from an unknown source and some tender moments. It was a little slow at first but there was plenty of action later and I found it to be an engaging read. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I love this story best so far in this series. Heaps of things happening. Lady Evangeline getting grazed by a bullet, falling in love with Devil Winter, whose real name is Theodore, and Devil getting shot. I loved the plot and whilst I loved the characters too, the story really revolved around the two main characters of Evangeline and Devil. I enjoyed this story. I found it unputdownable. 5☆
2.5 stars. Maybe 3, but it's difficult to determine a star rating with Novellas, especially with this series since these are all books about new characters instead of a little look into the lives of characters we're already familiar with.
I am not a fan of insta-love and even though this book did give them a two or three weeks to fall in love, it still was too fast for my taste. The writing got quite repetitive at times with the same idea or thought being mentioned over and over again, sometimes almost verbatim of the way it was previously said. I did not enjoy all the comparisons to Romeo and Juliet, especially when Evie specifically said she wanted a love like theirs. Also, the plot about figuring out who was trying to kill Evie does not seem to get truly resolved by the end of the story.
I did like Winter's Woman better than the previous book, Winter's Wallflower (based on what little I remember about it). I thought Evie and Devil were a better and more compelling couple than Dom and Addy. I also enjoyed their characters as individuals more.
The reigning toast of the Season, Lady Evangeline Saltisford is betrothed to Lord Denton, the most eligible bachelor in London and a scant few weeks from having everything she has ever wanted. Until danger comes calling, and she is forced to accept aid from a decidedly unlikely source. Devil Winter is the illegitimate offspring of a wealthy merchant and a prostitute. But he will do anything for his family, and when his older brother asks Devil to play bodyguard to his sister in law Lady Evie, he has no choice but to accept the loathsome task. This is the ninth book in the series & the second featuring the other Winters, it could be read on its own but characters do overlap & to fully appreciate I’d recommend reading at least Dom’s story first. I adored how Devil & Evie’s relationship developed from scowls & grunts to being Romeo & Juliet with a happy ending. A well paced book with strong characters & once again I was loathe to put it down. The sexual tension between the two was palpable even though they fought it for awhile, I loved how they danced round each other whilst all the while falling in love. Now I'm eagerly awaiting Blade's story. My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
I am not normally a person who must, absolutely, read a book as soon as she gets it because there are so many books waiting in line already but this story pulled me towards it as soon as I received it. I wanted a feelgood book and I knew Scarlett would deliver and boy does she. I love when a hero is all “I’m not good enough for you so go away”. Doesn’t hurt that he is from the wrong side of the tracks which makes him even more delicious. Yes, Devil, I am talking about you. But do you think that Evie listens, hell no. She stays and is not thrown off by his crudeness. She is even attracted to it but aren’t we all. The issue he has made him all the more vulnerable in my eyes and Evie helping Devil was so sweet and their reading together so warms your heart. I could have gone on and on reading about their relationship. Dom, you have to share with Devil as my favorite.
Theodore, wait, make that Devil. "The architecture of his face was a strange blend of wildness and perfection, of sinner and savior." Yep that sums up that gorgeous Devil!
Someone was trying to kill Lady Evangeline Saltisford, and with her sister just having married Dom Winter, it was logical to have his brother Devil be her protector. Devil was part of the illegitimate offspring of the wealthy Winter family, The rough rookery side that took no prisoners.
When they remove themselves to the country, away from London to give her more protection, they spend a lot of time along together and Evie begins to see how much more there is to Devil that the outward hard man..
Another amazing story by one of my favorite authors, who always manages to weave her heroes around my heart!! This is definately one of my favorites (ok I know I say that often but...). Sigh.
She’s a stuck up shrewish brat at first. Glad she grows out if that, and apologizes some but would have liked a bit more of her seeing how wring she was.
Overall it’s fine. Not the strongest book in the series but good none the less. I did like that he tells her his real name and when she refers him him by his name to his siblings they hand no idea. It shows right there his early on he trusted her.
I didn’t quite get why the “bad guy” was after her. That needed a little more flushing out, it would have even been good if it had carried over into the next book or two as an ongoing plot.
I loved this book from beginning to end and I loved seeing that the characters from book 8 were included in this storyline as well.. The characters are great the details of the story is just amazing.. This book has it all.. Joy, Sadness, Mystery, Love and steam.. And of course happily ever after.. I look forward to the next book in this series
An exciting Story! The Winter this time is Devil and the Lady is Evangeline. What a wonderful pair they make. He is quiet, secretive, brooding and gruff. She is inquisitive, chatty and very interested in him as he is in her. They are two fabulous characters who set the pages on fire as this sensual story progresses and unfolds. I loved these two characters as well as their story.
A truly sweet and saucy tale that allows a noble born lady to follow her heart, despite the expectations of the time period in which the story is set. As with all the stories in this series, it was a story that both warms your heart and has a dangerous plot surrounding the romance.
Love absolutely love. Instead of the usual the guy fighting for the girl and a scandal. It's the girl fighting for the guy. A nice change of pace. I really loved the time Theo and Evie would spend together all because of a book and bullet.
I really wanted to love this book, but I truly got a little bored by it. The dialogue felt repetitive as did the never ending internal monologue. I needed to see more growth by Devil the H and alot more honest communication between him and Evie. I needed more tender moments, sensual moments where I could see their feelings growing instead of being told that it was happening. Devil is a grump which I usually love, but he was a cruel grump who's tender side I needed to see more of with Evie, especially after she warmed up to him and was nothing but nice to him. I don't like when authors tell me something about a character without showing it to me, I needed to see more of his sweetness that was constantly reiterated in the book. I started off completely disliking Evie because she was snobby and mean to Devil for no good reason. She however did a complete 180 and I ended up finishing for her. I did love how deeply in love she fell with him and how persistent she was in her love for him, she never gave up no matter how difficult he became.
I did however read this first without reading any others in the series and despite my dislike of a few things in this book, I'm still looking forward to reading the others. Especially Addy and Dom.
Here are a few features of this story: Bodyguard Confined Space Super grumpy H/proper h Class difference
Contains a few Kiss scenes. 1 Oral sex scene almost at the end 1 full sex scene at the very end.
The romance between the two main characters is unrealistic. Not up to Scarlett Scott’s usual standards. I read this because I like the author but would not recommend.
Devil "Theo" Winter is the bastard son of a ruthless merchant and a Covent Garden whore, who sold him to an evil man when he was just a child. He was raised stealing, and other illegal things to survive the Rookeries in the East End. His older brother recently married Addy, the daughter of a duke & now Devil was being asked to play bodyguard to her twin sister, Evie, after someone had attempted to shoot her while she was riding in a carriage with her betrothed, Lord Denton. He owes his brother favors but he hates society & especially the pampered daughters of dukes, no matter how beautiful and outspoken they may be & now he would be forced to be alone with her in a townhouse for a fortnight or until the attempted murderer could be caught.
Lady Evangeline "Evie" Saltisford is quite miffed by the fact that she needs a protector & the one picked for her is the beastly, handsome, crude, handsome, quiet, handsome growling, handsome, glowering & handsome Devil Winter. But no matter how handsome, Evie is not pleased & has no problem telling him exactly how she feels about him. However, after spending a few days into this hiding, she has found Devil to have a lot more to him.
The attraction between Devil & Evie is evident, they both deny it & know nothing can come of it but that is easier said than done. The fiery relationship plus the humor, tenderness, danger & love make for a wonderful read. This can be read as a standalone, but I would suggest reading the entire series - you'll learn first, about the legitimate Winters & then secondly, about the illegitimate Winters - all have great stories to tell with HEAs for everyone. I voluntarily read & reviewed an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book; all thoughts & opinions are my own.
Series: The Wicked Winters #9 Rating:4 stars - It was really good
Lady Evangeline Saltisford is betrothed to the most eligible bachelor in London. When she finds herself in danger she is hidden away for safety with the broody and gruff Devil Winter as her bodyguard. But she quickly realizes there's more to Devil than he lets anyone see.
I am really loving these Winter men. Devil is a large overbearing man who uses his brawns to protect his family and business. He finds Lady Evangeline to be most annoying and uptight when he first interacts with her. But as you can imagine, their forced proximity brings with it new feelings, especially as they learn more about each other. Devil was very reluctant to let anyone in but he can’t resist Evie’s stubbornness. Devil was just another broody hero who I instantly liked and quickly grew to love the more I learned about him.
Evie was the proper society woman in the beginning but she quickly shows that she is different.. She isn’t afraid to stand up to the men, especially when it comes to decisions involving her. I was surprised by how much I liked her. Also I adored the scene with Evie reading to Devil in the library. It was totally a Beauty and the Beast moment, and I couldn’t get enough of it.
Overall, this was another wonderful historical romance from Scarlett Scott. I think she might be a new favorite historical romance author.
I really love how Scarlett Scott always writes characters that pull me in, and especially with these first two books about the bastard Winters (#8 and #9), the heroines are so good. Not cloyingly good, they are just kind, without the prejudices of the time. That could feel "not real" for the time period, but I think it just feels special. Plus, the heroes - the Winter men - they are the perfect mix of strong and soft, and it's amazing that they care so deeply when it feels like they've lived without love from others (except their makeshift family) for so long.
Evie and Devil are a wonderful couple. I actually know a two brothers who married two sisters, so though the pairing are both siblings of Dom and Adele in book 8, they do fit well together. A true opposites attract story. Devil has a lot more to say than his series of grunts from the last book, and I find him very thoughtful and heroic. And Evie is a delight, despite these feelings disrupting her future.
I would have liked to hear how Evie's father dealt with her relationship, but that detail is forgiven in light of it being a novella. As usual, the chemistry is amazing. I loved reading this book, just like I always love reading all of Scarlett's books. I can't wait for the next one!
I received an advanced copy, but all opinions in this review are my own.
Lady Evangeline Saltisford is betrothed to the most sought after gentleman of the season, but she’s forced into hiding when her life is in danger. Her brother-in-law Dominic Winter set his brother Devil Winter as her guard dog to keep her safe from harm. Oh these two mix like fire and water, I love their witty banter, but it soon turns into a friendship neither expected. Evie badgers him every step of the way until she gets her way, but Devil is having trouble keeping his hands of the irresistible sexy young virgin, his sister-in-law’s twin sister. She’s the high society daughter of a Duke and he’s a bastard of a merchant and a whore, these two should never meet let alone fall in love. While Evie’s life is in danger Devil will do anything to protect her, even send her away from him for her own good, and to protect his own heart from another broken heart. Evie fights with everything she has to protect her heart and her love for Devil if only he will stop being so stubborn. Will Devil give into his feeling and give love a chance and risk his heart? I have voluntarily read and reviewed these excellent story.
