The bestselling puppy is better than ever. Spot's 25th birthday presents are bold, beautiful color covers that give him a great new look. Enjoy Spot in paperback with full-color covers and traditional Lift-the-Flap features. Have more fun with Spot!
Eric Gordon Hill OBE was a popular author and illustrator of children's picture books, best known for his character Spot the Dog. His works have been widely praised for their contributions to child literacy. He was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2008 New Year Honours.
The owner had already removed many of the flaps from this lift-the-flap book, which didn't do much for the dramatic tension. Also, the first few reviews omit any mention of the fact that Spot is, for no reason I recall, hanging around with a hippo, and I was beginning to worry that she was just a drunken hallucination on my part.
What jumps out about this edition of Spot's First Easter is the vibrant colors. Eric Hill always had a knack for occasional splashes of brightness to please the eye, but it marks this book beginning to end as Spot and his friend Helen the hippo search for eggs hidden by the Easter Bunny. Will they find all six?
The eggs can be anywhere in or around the house. Spot finds one under a flower pot, and Helen sees an egg in the garden. Spot notices one nestled under a bluebird in a tree. Will Helen find an egg behind the feed sack? Within the house, Spot retrieves an egg tucked into a bowl of fruit, and the last egg is inside the grandfather clock. It's been a fun Easter.
Reasons abound to like this book. It doubles as a tutor for learning to count, with the Easter Bunny now and then reminding us how many eggs remain. I like that not every liftable flap reveals an egg; some places checked are dead ends, so the game feels more real. I love the bright colors in this particular edition: the green cover, red garden bench, and luminescent multicolor shed are just a few items that visually pop. Helen herself is a nice shade of blue. I rate Spot's First Easter two and a half stars; it's as good as any book to that point in the series.
I grew up watching Spot. And though he isn't as present in the Netherlands, I love that I occasionally get to read a board book featuring my favourite puppy.
Spot's First Easter is a great romp hunting for eggs with Spot and his friend Helen. For little ones it not only becomes a counting game but also a game of hide and seek. A delightful open-the-flaps read.
Of all the Easter books I read to my son this year, he liked this one the most, probably because of the flaps. A cute story showing Spot and Helen hunting for Easter eggs. I could see reading this one over the years as my son gets older and is able to follow the story better. Also a bit nostalgic for me because I’m pretty sure I read this one as a kid myself.
Spot is such a good children's book character and over the years, I've forgotten how much I've missed him. He's easily up there in my favorite children's book dogs with Biscuit and Clifford.
Spot searches for eggs with his friend during his first Easter. This was good, but I think the color could have popped out more. Overall, a classic Spot book.
Grandie gave Jack this book for Easter because he likes Spot and has a Spot toy from Uncle Andy. I know she read it to him in the car on the way to church, but I can't remember if she read it this morning before we left. I didn't get much of an impression from him, but I assume he liked it. He paid attention the whole time.
Spot and Helen go on an Easter egg hunt initiated by a bunny with creepy eyes. Spoiler: Spot wins. The book breaks into the real world by hiding the eggs behind actual flaps (if your baby is like mine, better watch out that they don't rip the cardboard flaps out of the book).
The lift-the-flap Spot books are always special, if not predicable. This one is particularly fun though, because the flaps create a fun medium for the depiction of an Easter egg hunt.
My baby is entertained by the flaps. He just looks through it but wont let me read it as other books. Hello show me whats under the flap and i'll tell him (bird, ego, bunny, cat etc.)
Another great interactive Easter books that the kiddos love. Often times the would actually fight over who would lift the flap 😂 oh my! But def will be a kids favorite for under 2 years old
Much like Karen Katz, once you've read a couple Spot books, you've pretty much read them all. I'd been waiting for Easter to take this out for Natalie since we see it in the board book case every week. Sadly, again, a few flaps were missing, which really damped the hunting for the Easter eggs. This book is also a counting book.
The Spot series is a great series for beginning readers. This particular one is about Spot the dog and finding Easter eggs. The book also has lift flaps which can be fun for the kids. I would use this book when talking about holidays, but it is also good for counting because of counting the eggs.
The lift-the-flap books are wonderful for little hands. It helps with motor skills while you are reading. These don't last long in the library, but we still collect them. I would like to have more of these in my personal collection.
Spot in on the hunt for Easter eggs hidden by the bunny. This pop up book is great for teaching counting, adding, subtracting. Kids will love using the flip "pop up" feature and counting how many eggs Spot needs to find.
Checked this out of the library to read with my almost 3 year old to get her excited for Easter and know how much she seems to enjoy lift flaps. I don't think either of us was blown away or disappointed. It was just an okay book.
It's another Spot book. This time Spot and Helen are looking for Easter eggs. Eric Hill really phoned this one in though. Still cute for the 13 month old crowd.
