About the author

Eric Gordon Hill OBE was a popular author and illustrator of children's picture books, best known for his character Spot the Dog. His works have been widely praised for their contributions to child literacy. He was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2008 New Year Honours.

See Spot. See Spot run. See Spot run the park!!! Dude! See Spot at his most playful best when he takes his big ol' beach ball and zooms to the local park with his animal buddies: a turtle, a hippo and a gator! Such a combo should not even exist, but then who are we to believe in "shoulds"? Spot is so full of energy even the turtle says "What's the rush?" (He likes slow and steady. It wins more race meets. Just ask the hare!) Oops! Spot loses the ball in the lake! Can the duckie save his balls? Ahem, his beach ball? The suspense! The drama!! The action!! The need for none of the above since in a kids book about a puppy named Spot, it ain't necessary! Eric Hill's Spot series remains the standard for beginner books for kids 2 to 5.

Why does Spot's mum have to tell him to say thank you to the Duck, shouldn't he just say thank you?
Why do all the other animals speak in language but the duck quacks?

Really enjoyable read, I feel as though spot the dog is much more of a fleshed out character then he was he some of Eric hill earlier books , love the bit at the end when spot mother tells spot to say thank you and he says quack quack , you could argue that this was the duck saying quack quack I’m not sure perhaps it’s ment to be ambiguous

A 20 page epic about a puppy throwing his ball at a duck at the park. Pretty riveting stuff, vastly improved by the smiles you get from your baby when reading it to him.

2026 is basically going to be limited in scope for my usual fantasy & sci-fi fiction and philosophy/history/political non-fiction and will inevitably involve me adding all the books I read to my newborn son at story time!

One of a few Spot books that we own and read fairly regularly. In this one, Spot goes to the park with his Mum and his friend Helen the hippo. They play on the swings and find their friend Tom the alligator in the playground. Spot brought his ball and where it goes is part of the fun of the story.

We're on a bit of a lift the flap book tour it seems. The flaps are all different sizes which keeps us guessing as to where they are. We had lots of giggles trying to lift the pages. The pictures didn't really grab our fancy. Easy, simple text that's age appropriate, because apparently that's a thing. 🐕 🌳

Spot Goes to the Park by Eric Hill is another addition to the lift the flap Spot saga. The interactive component and varied questions make this a hit for most children as they watch Spot, accompanied by his mother, and his friends, Helen and Tom, play in the park.

The text uses more vacabulary than the original Where's Spot, consisting of declarations by Spot's mother and some varied questions, such as: Where did the ball go? The responses are also varied, "It's right here!" Words for actions are used. A large bold font is used, making it easy to read.

The illustrations really work. The simple pictures allow children to focus on the story, with lots of white space surrounding the pictures. The colors are bright and cheerful. The animals are cute, especially the helpful duck.

This book works one on one and also for groups as a read-aloud. There are opportunities to make, or have children make, animal sounds. Going to the park is a familiar and comforting activity. A toddler story time read-aloud favorite. It's not as perfect as Where's Spot? but still fun.

For toddlers, preschoolers, K, and beginning readers, lift the flap, print motivation, and fans of Spot and Eric Hill.

This book was a huge favourite of mine. I loved the VHS version of this. I wanted to get a dog after reading it. I used to have ALL of these books and I read them a lot because I liked the pictures. When it became an animated thing, I lved it so much! I had the VHSs and watched them everyday. I don't know when I stopped or when I grew up from it, but this series has completely escaped my memory until just recently when I read the book: "1001 Children's Books you must read before you grow up".

I am glad to have had this in my life.

A wonderful read from my childhood, one I’d certainly suggest for other youngsters. Whilst it is not my all-time favourite childhood read I can still recall all the details of this one meaning it certainly left a lasting impression upon my young mind.

We got these out of the library for Natalie because they have flaps. She doesn't seem to like them as much as Open the Barn Door, but it maybe because we haven't sat and read them the same and that the flaps are different.

I know I had a Spot book growing up, but I don't know which. I'm not sure if it was this one. Anyway, this is a simple and fun book. I love lift-the-flap books. The story is very simple, for the youngest of children, and there's nothing objectionable here.
