This is the biggest teaser you will ever find - and it is NOT optional reading.
Behind the scenes content, all-new plot twists, and an entertaining field guide, along with a peek inside book 5.
Book 4 is an INTERMISSION, though not a direct continuation of the timeline after Kitten & Allure, this book is your key to past and present events not yet revealed.
And it will blow your mind.
From the moment baby Shade was found to what happened after Shade’s demise in Kitten & Allure. Meet Shades father’s (yes, her biological and adoptive), and see exactly what happens when you get on Killian and Pax’s bad side.
There are trigger warnings for this one, bad guys die, and you will have access to the moment Pax met his first mate (some readers hate the mmc’s with anyone other than the fmc, so fair warning.)
Get excited, because you’re about to have your mind blown. Everything you thought you knew just got a whole lot more deadly

I don’t understand why the author stated that this book was not optional? Nothing was truly groundbreaking lmao. Nothing happened. It mostly A HUGE SUMMARY of the 3 previous books with added bonus scenes of things that don’t matter or we don’t really care about.
I don’t get the point of this installment. You CAN skip this.
Maybe I would’ve been less harsh if it was not called “book 4” but maybe something like “book 3.5” that way I know that’s kind of canon but not really necessary.
I guess, if you have a tendency to forget what you’ve read or what happened in a series within different years publications, this can be useful to you.
I don’t know why people say this book is not optional.... It totally is. There is maybe one or two hints that may play into future storylines, but I’ve already read book 5, and this book was not at all needed to understand and enjoy the story.
No, seriously, this is everything. It is a summary, a collection of explanations, an invitation, a series of maps, character profiles, bonus scenes and teasers. With this installment, you can tell that Amanda Cashure is first, and foremost, a reader - as this is the info that readers crave. Is the perfect stop in the series to review, or refresh in prep for the next books of retreading the series isn’t for you. If you are reading straight through, is still valuable with bonus scenes and breakdowns. Figuring out WHERE Logan really comes into the drama was important to me. I knew he was the nephew, but the exact relationships escaped me - but within these pages I found a genealogy diagram. Perfect.
I want to both thank and hug the author for putting this book out there - fan favorite over here.
I don't even know what the point of this book was... I would not consider this "not optional reading" at all. It's basically repeating scenes from previous books from other characters pov which was just.. mostly unnecessary. There's a few things in there that are helpful and some things that are heavy hints for the next book BUT those scenes could have been added into the previous 3 books easily, without making us slog through 350+ pages of boredom.
The idea of this book is completely new and innovative. I have seen authors publish books of a collection short POVs from secondary or side character but never something on this scale. In this volume Amanda includes short POVs from the guys along with some new never before seen characters. POV’s from various characters are classified as before or after meeting Shade and we get to see how the guys have changed since meeting her and even before their mother’s death. This portion of the book highlights some previously unknown backstory and the one small decision that blew up everybody’s life. It also includes the first seven chapters of the events of books 1-3 from Thane’s perspective (which I previously read when Amanda held challenges online to get access). The Thane portion of the book is phenomenal, and it was nice to see the thought process and priorities of a character we have had little to no contact with but has always been there in the background unknowingly.
The rest of the book is a really interesting commentary from the author about character bios and information about the main prophecy throughout this series among other things. There were things that I 100% thought I had figured out and Amanda basically confirmed that I know nothing. There are all these little teasers and info hidden throughout it all. Some of it, like the portion that summaries books 1-3 and the character bios, were a bit repetitive for me but I have also read the series so many times now that it’s all stuck up in my brain. But all the fun foreshadowing teases made it worth it. If you are the type of person who likes to reread series before the next book comes out, I think this volume is an excellent way to get caught up without having to reread all the books. It was also interesting to see what small events Amanda thought were important enough to but in the series summary. Everything goes very in-depth not only about Shade’s world but also Hunter (a spin off series). Overall, this was a super interesting concept that Amanda created. I was hesitant about the execution but honestly it was super intriguing and it will be interesting to see if she does this again if the series gets stretched out to 7+ books.
I will admit that I was hesitant when I first heard about this book and I was wondering how it would work out. I love bonus and behind the scenes additions to books (like the Forbidden Chapters in the boxset for books 1-3) but beyond that, I'm not typically a fan.
I inhaled The True Histories and I have no issue at all admitting that I was wrong to be hesitant. These extra scenes were entertaining, the summaries and behind the scenes information made me stop and think, along with just plain being enjoyable. I'm also one of those people who is terrible with theories so even though I'm thinking of all that was shared, I'm also perfectly fine with leaving the theories on how it all connects to others to puzzle out. I'm also absolutely fine with this ride that the series is taking us and all the details, plots, character arcs, and relationship developments that are happening.
The Shadows and Shade series continues to grow and as it does so, it really does get more awesome. Sometimes complex fantasy series get bogged down with the info and the multiple plots, but not this series and I feel like The True Histories underlines that fact brilliantly.
I was curious what this book would entail, so I was torn between looking for teasers or being surprised once it downloaded to my Kindle. I am so glad I waited!
I love how this book/guide/gift from above is told. I love all the detailed past references, so no one is left to fend for themselves with faulty memories (like mine). I love knowing how different characters/timelines/events all connect, yet remain a mystery to us in the future storyline. I adore the parts we get to see in this book that we only had vague snippets on before, such as what happened to Lord Martin.
I know the title may sound like a fan guide, and while it most certainly is, you DEFINITELY need to read it. This book clears up any confusion you may have in the previous books (visuals included), while also shedding light on others to come (and some books you may want to seek out).
Way to go, Amanda! Thank you for this work of art.
I loved it! I loved being back with Shade, Pax, Seth, Roarke, Killian and Thane. There are so many great parts to the Histories that it's almost impossible to pick a favorite but Thane definitely sticks out in my mind. I loved getting a more in-depth introduction to him. He made me laugh out loud with some of his reactions. Not that he's the only one but until the Histories I felt that he was a character that we have only scratched the surface of. Getting to know Thane more really gave us more insight into Pax as well. Not that Pax was ignored here but since these two share a body yet are two distinct individuals the interactions between them helped me gain more understanding into each of their characters. Really I can't wait to read more about all of them.
This is a series that as far as I'm concerned Amanda could write for as long or even longer than she could stand. I am thoroughly enjoying these characters and universe so very much!
I never know how to rate these types of books. I appreciate the short stories and background knowledge, and the little teaser/spoiler snippets. But it is not new plot. Really it just made me MORE impatient for Power and Pentad.
I liked the insight into Shade’s parents, and the circumstances of Shade going into stasis. Those added depth to the overall plot without spoilers.
Thane’s portion left me conflicted. It was sort of interesting to read, but not really new, and didn’t add a whole lot. He is very dramatic, and it got to be a bit much at a certain point.
The one thing I can do without, however, if the stories of the guys with the other chicks. No thanks, they are with Shade now. And hopefully soon *with* Shade. (Come on sexy times in book 5).
Overall, I appreciated the background, and enjoyed several of the stories. I also liked to recap at the end, as I head into book 5. But I am aching to something NEW.
For fans of the Shadows and Shade series, this is essential reading! You can call it book 3.5 as far as it being an intermission and not furthering the plot/current timeline, but IMO, it can’t be skipped. These pages offer a bit of a catch up or refresher for those that need it... Especially after the doorstop that was K&A’s THICKNESS! It offers a whole lot more though. There are profiles of our favorite characters and those we love to hate. There is a timeline of events that helps to put things in perspective and mesh events with those in Hunters & Secrets, which for those that still haven’t made the dive, is part of the of the “ShadowVerse” big picture. We meet both of Shade’s fathers (yes, there are 2!) and the mother who rescued and cared for her. There’s also a peek at book 5, AKA Power and Pentad, that you’re not going to want to miss!
The Shadows and Shade series has become one of my absolute favorites. That being said, this is a bit of an intermission between Kitten and Allure and Powers and Pentad. It fills in some backstory and delves a little deeper into some of the side characters. It also lets you know what was happening at the same time things we already read were going on. We also get to know Thane a bit more and have a lead in to Powers and Pentad.
Do I think a lot of this could or should have been in earlier books, sure. But Amanda Cashure is a dynamic writer, not static. Meaning, she is continually inspired as she writes, she doesn’t have it all mapped out and wrapped in a bow. I am enjoying the story and can’t wait for the next book.
For fans of the Shadow Verse, this is absolutely necessary reading. It is book 4 and not 3.5. In order to go forward with the series a catch up is needed and this gives us it, along with a lot more. It contains character profiles, maps and explanations along with a time line of events. I think I'd forgotten how detailed this world is and seeing it from the perspective of the author is a fantastic addition. New content is given in stories set before the Elorsin's and while they are younger. We meet their mother and father along with Shade's fathers (yes 2) and adoptive mother. A sneak peek at book 5 is in there too (I may have read it already 😈😂 and it is great!)
WOW! This is an absolute must read as it offers so much insight into the characters and their thoughts and actions in the events that were basically in between pages. Like if one character goes off one way and the others go another way you get to see the ones that were not given details on. It is extremely well written and provides so much information. It gives a refresher if you haven't read the first 3 books in a while. It is a fantastic read that just draws you deeper into their world and makes you feel like you are part of the story looking it a whole different way. This is an absolute must read!!!!!!!
Ok, so this one is a bit weird. Because I’ve found this series after all the books are out (thank goodness!), I think I find it strange because it feels like extra content for fans waiting for the next installment of a series that is taking a long time between books. There is a bunch of teasers and deleted scenes and explanations of all the characters, plot points, and things you might have previously missed. In fact, you probably don’t need to even read the first three books at all and just read this and you’d be good to go with the fifth book. Part of me wishes that more authors would do this in complicated fantasy worlds.
This book was great. You get lots of behind the scenes in this installment. Alot of laughs, giggles, and wow moments. Some things completely blew my mind. And Thanes povs were hilarious. You also get a brief teaser for book 5. There's alot of information in here. Some you don't need but should want to maybe find a deeper meaning and appreciation for the series. And some information that you need to find the reason for certain things that happen through out the series. I highly recommend this series and author
When I first heard about this book, I was hesitant about reading it. I LOVE this world that Ms. Cashure has created and her writing is just PHENOMENAL, but the concept of a field guide for any series has never been something that has appealed to me. I have pretty good recall when it comes to details and I’m not afraid to reread a series in preparation for a new release within that world, so what’s the point in reading a field guide? This book is SO MUCH MORE than JUST a field guide. It’s several little prequel stories PLUS some scenes and different viewpoints that were left out of the first three books. The main thing to know is that this is NOT a book you can just skip. There are some MAJOR moments revealed in this nifty little book that’ll leave you begging for more. I know I’ve been on my knees begging for a full length prequel series. One can only hope that’ll be a reality in the future.
I think my favorite part was getting a snippet of the guys when they were young. Roarke’s never been more appealing to me and after that little insight into his manwhore days, he’s moved up to my # 3 spot (I don’t think anyone can knock Seth and Thane out of the top 2).
So yeah, you NEED this book if the Shade series is one that you’ll be continuing because the things revealed are VERY important to the understanding of what’s going to happen down the road for our newest Pentad.
I read the blurb for this book and i couldnt wait to get my hands on this. Shadows and Shades is one of my favourite series and this book just adds to it brilliantly. It contains backstories, character profiles and maps.......etc. Everything you need to keep up with whats happened in all the books so far and a taster of things to come. Technically this is book 4 in the series but it also includes a peak at book 5 too. Its perfect reading if like you like the Shadowverse and i loved it. Cant wait for book 5 now
This is an absolute must read in the series! It isn’t just a companion or field guide to the world. Amanda Cashure gives us a glimpse into her world building notes that truly help bring the series together since there are a lot of facts and such that are hard to keep track of.
Not to mention the fun scenes and shorts that add extra color to the world and the series. I also love the little hints that she drops here and there when explaining things in the more “companion” section of the book. Some excellent trivia is in that section and it’s fun to be “in the know” 😂😂😂
This is definitely an optional reading. While there were some(definitely not enough) short insights between chapters in previous books, this book is just a cool addition if you want the full collection on your bookshelf. Other than novelty, there is nothing really unique. Yes, its big, but mostly it consists of reminders of chapters in previous books with few words on them from author. Few meaning a sentence or two. I could have calmly lived without ever reading it and not loosing anything because of that. However, 4 stars just for an effort to make this companion.
The True Histories of the Shadowverse is an excellent companion book to the Shadow and Shades series. Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started, but immediately got pulled into reading short stories and different perspectives of the first three books along with background information on the shadowverse world. The stores included added beautifully to the original plots. I’m can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
Had I not just finished reading all 3 books and Hunters and Secrets in preparation for book 4, this would probably have been a 5 star read for me. I hope she does something similar but in more depth on the interactions between the two series again, because Hunters and Secrets is way too dark for me, and I'm not particularly looking forward to having to read book 2 of H&S to understand the greater Shadowverse moving forward.
This book doesn’t really continue on with the Shadow and Shade story, but it does recap the first 3 books. It actually pulls out bits and pieces that you may have overlooked, but plays a significant part in the series.
It also gives you background on the story on why things happened the way they did. Very interesting and eye opening. It’s one I would not skip because of all the extra info that’s in it. It is an important book.
I went into this book expecting to be continuing the storyline, however that’s not what this is. I very much enjoyed reading this book and even paused to go read Hunters & Secrets so that I wouldn’t spoil anything. It was so interesting to hear the thoughts that went into certain choices and to recap a lot of the information that gets tossed the readers way up to this point.
After reading so many books it is nice to have one that catches you up when you don't have the time to do a re-read of the previous books. This was great and loved to twists and different takes from the prior stories. Like books before, it leaves you with wanting more. It was written well and is exactly what I needed.
This book is exactly what I needed! S&S is a huge world with so much going on. This field guide of sorts has a collection of short stories that fill in a majority of the gaps. The details make you fall more in love with the characters and give you insight to their pasts. Showing the events that has molded them into the story we know and love.
Some may wonder why this is book 4 and not 3.5, but it is needed for understanding the series and isn't just bonus content. I don't want to give away any spoilers, so I won't say too much other than there are lots of interesting and important details, new POVs, and surprising revelations to be discovered in these pages.
If you have followed any of the shade books you will absolutely love this accompanying book. It has back stories, deleted scenes, and so much more depth of the characters as well as the theories that have been worked out to date. It also has an amazing teaser at the end for the next book that will have you anxiously anticipating us release.
While I like this book and some of the pov I just skimmed most of it. I don’t like that I “have to” read this POV sheet for the next book. Doesn’t really seem that important to me. And when I do rereads I will be skipping this book. While that being said I did enjoy what I read. The thane POV were epic.
If you haven't started reading this series, you are missing out on a,wild ride. Lot of fun, lot of tension, lot of edge of your seat. Books are well written and the characters are each one well drawn. Step aside from all the serious stuff going on in the world right now, and join this one.
It was okay I guess, not really something I wanted to sit down and read and I skipped some parts and skim read others. I don’t really feel like you absolutely have to read this one to know what happens in the next part of the story but okay.
