I promise if The Never List had a cartoon cover and a MAINSTREAM PUBLISHER sticker slapped on it somewhere, it would've been on all of those Best Romance of the Year lists that fly around every quarter. This is the kind of book those lists seem to love—funny, original, and swoony with cool, relatable characters— only it (gasp!) centers both a Black hero and heroine. The Never List is good-natured and fun, and as always, DL's writing is clear, witty (love her dry humor), and sweet. She writes romance-y romance, with warm, relatable, grown characters who often find themselves in quirky, fun situations that force them to grow as people. The Never List is a great beach, or any time read, really, as is all of DL's catalog.

The Never List was a really good read. I especially love that there was absolutely no relationship drama between these characters. Just two people who meet and fall in love organically. Esme is a 39 year old virgin who's deathly afraid of almost everything. She's determined to lose her virginity and overcome some of her fears by her 40th birthday so, she make a never list. A list of thing she's never done which, includes sex. Tre is more than happy to help Esme check those items off her list and encourages her become more adventurous. I loved when Esme decides she wants her first time to be with Tre and he finally finds out she's a virgin, he goes above and beyond to make her first time a very special occasion. Tre was a true gentleman. Even though they were mature in age (my favorite kind of characters), Esme and Tre were an adorable couple. The chemistry and attraction between them was sweet. Tre didn't judge Esme for waiting so late in life to lose her virginity and encouraged her to step outside of her comfort zone and be more spontaneous. It was honorable that Esme chose to wait until she found someone worthy enough to give herself to regardless of how long it took her. The Never List was a sweet love story. The romance was first rate, there were several LOL scenes, and the sex was steamy. I'd highly recommend this book.

Esme x Trey 🥰🥰

How I love, love, LOOOOVED this story. Esme and Trey had so much chemistry. Once their bickering ended, their banter, their affection, and eventually love for one another was absolutely beautiful. I love how Trey cared for Esme, especially as he helped her with the items on her list. A list with stuff on there to help her be a little more adventurous. Trey tackled everything on that list with her. He did it all with patience, care, and love. I love that Esme herself was extremely outspoken, knew what she wanted, and went for what she wanted. I loved her confidence. She was extremely loveable, and I love how she was with Trey. They fit extremely well together. This was a super fun read. I loved every page. DL.White’s writing style is captivating, and I’m enjoying the hell out of her catalog.

Cute! Humorous! Sassy!

When I chose this book, I thought it was Esme's list of things she NEVER intended to do.
For example:
1) I am never going to work at a job I hate.
2) I am never going to have a friends with benefits relationship.
3) I am never going to allow other people to talk me into doing things I hate/am terrified to do.

As it turns out, with Trey's support and encouragement, Esme does ALL of these things. However, Esme is no push-over. She is beautiful, strong and intelligent, inside and out.

That is why Esme and Trey are perfect for each other. They are really loyal and supportive of one another. It was beautiful to watch!

The Never List is one of those stories you read, and then you desperately want to discuss it with someone. Esme is on the cusp of 40 and has a bucket list of items that she’s never done that she wants to do before she turns 40. Enter Trey Pettigrew.

Poor Trey got lots of smoke from her at first. She was downright rude to him, even when he was nice to her, but he gave her a verbal smackdown a couple of times, written with White’s signature sense of humor, and it was delicious.

“You might want to see a doctor by the way.”
My brows hiked. “About?”
“That stick up your ass.”

And then there was this gem, when Trey asked her, “Is it just me, or are you a bitch?”

Despite their rocky start, Trey was the one to help Esme cross items of her Never List, which led to them heating up the pages. But Esme was a virgin, and not the innocent virgin we typically read about in romance novels. She wasn’t naïve, and they did everything but that for a while. It was actually kind of refreshing to read this version of a virgin heroine, and being that Esme was an older virgin, it made sense.

White also wrote some interesting secondary characters. Esme’s cousin, O’Neal, was a scene stealer. I enjoyed his sense of humor, and when he was on the page, Esme got some sense talked into her whether she wanted it or not. And I’m patiently waiting on a story about Ken Takagi, by the way, Trey’s biracial (Black and Japanese) friend who’s a chef.

A great story overall, with interesting secondary characters, a believable plot, witty writing, and a compatible couple that you’ll definitely root for.

Sooo it took me two years to read the pretty cover that I swore kept popping up all over my tl! Finally got the chance to read The Never List and it’s really a cute romantic comedy! Esme and Trey were enemies to lovers and they started off all wrong! Not to mention her first date was with someone else when Esme met Tre. What started as a simple list thy she was dared to create to live her life before turning 40 turned into a connection with fate. It’s not so bad to try something new and not live in a box. Get out your comfort zone. It’s also feels good when someone wants to join you on that journey and that’s exactly what Tre did for Esme. I won’t give any spoilers but I will say this is a fun read but also long read. I underestimated the pages so it took me two days to complete. I would recommend and this book reminded of The Perfect Find by Tia Williams or I Think I Might Love you by Christina C Jones (all fun black girl romantic comedies.)

I saw so much of myself in these characters - more than being a love story, this was a story about stepping out of your comfort zone, letting people love you as you are and staying true to yourself. Loved it.

I. Loved. Esme.and.Trey

I loved this character, Esme; she was a scaredy-cat, I simply adored. I enjoyed the way she presented in the story. She was a 30+-year-old who lived a sheltered life. She worked for a humdrum company she did not love. Her accidental meeting with Trey Pettigrew was epic. The love, hate thingy turned into a beautiful adventure. Trey is my new hero, and I am fan-girling Esme too. Their story was so much fun. I highly recommend that you give this story a try.

I received a copy of this book from the author and I’m reviewing it voluntarily.

If you are looking for a hilarious, sexy, contemporary Black romance full of depth and nuance, read this book... thank me later!

Esme has a birthday coming up and she is tired of her fear holding her back, so at her cousin’s prodding she creates a Never List of things she wants to conquer before her big day. Trey has big dreams, but his father gets ill so he has to step into the CEO role of this father’s company. It’s the job he has to do so he can get the job he wants to do. Trey and Esme meet accidentally and then end up working together. Their chemistry is unmistakeable from the very beginning, but their work situation causes them to put off pursuing their attraction. Well, kind of.

D.L. White’s books are so good because she does a masterful job of creating complex characters you really care about and witty/sexy/realistic banter between them, and The Never List is no exception. While Trey and Esme’s burgeoning romance is definitely center stage, the secondary relationships between them and their friends and family help to give their personalities a depth that really makes you fall in love with the entire cast of characters. I LOVE the “Us against the World” dynamic that evolves from the crisis point, instead of the customary tension between the main characters. The romcom element of this book is first rate, several scenes are laugh out loud funny while still being intensely steamy.

i started off disliking esme for her stank attitude and kept that dislike up to the point im at! i was intrigued by premise of a 40 year old virgin who wasnt a sad sack, uggo (ha) with no social skills. but maybe she cant get anybody cuz of her shit personality????

idk i like a grouchy prickly heroine since women never get to have that trait but there's snarky and there's esme. like your 40 year old ass too old to be this rude to people and expect them to work well with you. and at no point was she worth the effort everyone around her was putting into her!

also the plot made no sense but maybe im a dumdum??? whytf would trey wanna help her with her never list? so she could not do her job well and acquiesce to all his demands even tho it's not her company? it was an obvs plot contrivance to get them to spend non-hateful time together and it never clicked cuz frankly they both boring af and so is the acquisition of w/e the fuck property they doing

This week I read #TheNeverList by #DLWhite . I obviously picked this on because the cover is just so lovely. This book is about a successful woman named Esme, who has lived a successful life, but a life without adventure. She is assigned to a project that puts her alongside Trey, a man with a dream and a good heart. After Esme makes a list of all the things she's never done, Trey steps in to support her while she faces her fears and levels up in life. Y'all this book was very sexy and very cute. The author set this book in Atlanta, and she must be a native because the dialogue is perfect and modern. I also love that Esme was a late-in-life virgin and wasn't portrayed as defective in some way. She was simply a woman who had made choices. Also there's a very sly scene in a conference room where Trey lays down the gauntlet..it's basically "I see you, I'm attracted to you, do you think of me?, I think of you constantly, and when we're done with this work, I'm ready to pursue you full-time if you're down." 🔥🔥🔥

It happens when it's time

I enjoyed this do much. The acknowledging of age not being a number for do many thing yet still being a factor for others. This little love story was actually adorable hand in hand falling together (no pun intended). Fun read😊

Never lists are fun

I really enjoyed this book. trey had me laughing, Esme had me laughing and annoyed at times. I loved that they were more mature, neither perfect and with some issues. I liked how honest they were and that Trey was really all in. The family was funny as well. I loved that there was family support and some family drama. The characters were real.

Sooo so good!

Esme and Trey were EV-ER-EE-THING!! I really enjoyed the slow-burn of their relationship (boy did it burn)! His care for her, her reluctance to give in, his persistence, her resistance. All of it made for a beautiful love story. Humorous without being a “funny story” it was just well written to me. Very well done, Ms. White!

Esme is about to turn forty. She makes a list of ten things she's never done, things she wants to accomplish by her birthday. In reverse order, the list shows #1, down at the very bottom, is Fall in Love. #9 is a surprise: Have Sex.

When Esme, a financial analyst for a builder, is tasked to facilitate a somewhat-hostile merger with another company, she is forced to work with Trey, an executive from the opposing side. She and Trey have already met, and it didn't go well. In order to work out the differences between their companies, Trey, who has seen the lesser items on her list, but not the biggies, offers to help her get them done in exchange for Esme being more flexible in negotiations. Thus they begin spending time together, loosening up, moving from adversaries to friends to lovers.

The premise is unlikely, but believable. Esme is no blushing baby. Her virginity is a choice made by a smart, assertive woman. She and Trey have (graphic) sexual encounters leading up to actual intercourse, and he doesn't know about #9 on the list until far into the novel. At this age, it could be seen as a red flag; his interest isn't guaranteed, and Esme is unsure she'll get what she wants.

I enjoyed this story. It's often LOL funny; one standout was in the middle of a very graphic situation. The heat level is a 9 out of 10. Author DL White puts a lot of effort into descriptions of food, furnishings, and settings (the Ferris wheel overlooking the city, for ex., or a rooftop restaurant.) As an occasional visitor to Atlanta, I enjoyed seeing how city life might look for a couple of affluent thirty-somethings living in a quite sophisticated world. Recommended.

I really enjoyed this book! I laughed out loud so many times, it was refreshing to read . I love the way this author writes her books , even the the story idea may not be new, her way of telling them always is , I’m never bored, I never skim, I read every word , and the characters are strong. Cannot wait to see what she writes next , I hope we get Trey’s sisters story, it’s a serious topic but I want to read Missy’s story.

Esme was so mean! I honestly couldn't stand her ass at the beginning, but DL White pulled me all the way in with her sharp writing, humor, and great characters. Esme evolved. So did Trey. Esme's family was sweet and had me laughing multiple times. Overall, The Never List was an immensely satisfying read.

DL White gave us another hit! Esme and Trey have replaced Kade and Leslie as my new favs. This kept me up all night and I don’t regret a thing. The familial relationships were so relatable and the journey of love was perfectly done for this couple. Definitely recommend.

So, so good!!!

I bought this book when it was released, but thanks to a reading slump courtesy of COVID, I didn’t read it right away. When I finally did start reading it, I was drawn into the story immediately - then the foolishness that was Election 2020 took over everything, and I put it back down again.

Once my mind was clear and my anxiety left the scene, I dug back in. And I was hooked! From the cover, to the plot, to the characters, and the pacing of the story, everything was on point. Esme was a lot initially, but I really, really liked her. And don’t get me started on Trey; handsome, loads of fun and so sweet. And the twins and O’Neal? Hilarious!!!

DL White did her thang with this one! I’ve read most, if not all of her books (and enjoyed them!), but she took her writing to the next level with this book. Keep doing your thing, girl!

This is a must read. Do yourself a favor and practice some self-care by reading this book. You won’t regret it.

Got my fingers crossed that we’ll be seeing fine a** Ken and his NYC boo soon. 😉

I saw the author reading an excerpt from this book on Facebook live and I had to download it immediately. Esme is my kind of girl. Sassy, fun, hilarious, and ready to tackle her bucket list before her 40th birthday. Trey makes a great book boyfriend. He sees what he wants and has the patience and compassion to go after it. Their story is sweet, flirty, daring, hot, and entertaining. The author also brings in both families who are supportive of one but controlling of the other and yet in the end you can feel the love on all sides. I am so glad I happened upon Ms. White and I look forward to reading more of her stories.

Esme Whitaker is turning 4o and she has few things she wants to cross off of her "Never Have I Ever" List. If only she'd known she'd be meeting her destiny.

I'll definitely be reading more from this author.

Loved the love

I have to admit, I didn’t like Esme at first but she quickly grew into my cousin in my head. She was soft and hard at the same time, like many of us have to be working in a male dominated field. Her Never List made me write my own. We all need to be encouraged to step out of our comfort zones and start really living.
I enjoyed this book. I loved the love between Esme and Trey and I can’t wait to read more from Ms. White.

Loved the characters, loved the story

Esme could be mean, but I loved this character. I also loved Trey's pursuit of her. They bonded over the Never List and work. I liked that there really wasn't a big romantic angst; there was a professional one. The characters were all in pursuing both the list and their relationship.

The Never List was a nice piece of normalcy to escape to right now. It has everything: dating, work, and love. If you’re looking for some good writing to curl up with during these winter months, pick this one up and find a cozy corner.
