Ever since Callie - the Vatican's rookie monster hunter - killed a demon a few weeks ago, Kansas City's been eerily quiet. But she soon learns it's just the calm before the storm.
Because werewolves begin abducting young women in Kansas City, and a new church opens its doors, pronouncing death to all idols, including these "make-believe" monsters and wizards.
But when one of their congregation is disemboweled by a monster on the steps of the church with the phrase God is dead painted in blood, someone in the church decides to take a lesson from the Salem Witch Trials.... And the police seem to be helping.
Callie must catch the killer before Kansas City erupts in civil war. A civil war she inadvertently started. Before everyone decides to kill each other. Or worse yet, her.
But she's being stalked. By something unseen. More than one something... And with so many new faces coming to Missouri - gods, legends, and nightmares - Callie begins to realize it's all someone's sick idea of a game. And that Hell never really left Kansas City. Or Callie Penrose.

Now, let's talk about this specimen of a man named Shayne...
Shayne Silvers writes the "Nate Temple Series" which features a foul-mouthed, flawed, young wizard with a chip on his shoulder attempting to protect St. Louis from the various nasties we all know and fear from our childhood bedtime stories.
Nate's been known to suckerpunch an Angel, cow-tip the Minotaur, and steal Death's horse in order to prove his point. His utter disregard for consequences and self-preservation will have you laughing and cringing on the edge of your seat.
But he has a lot to learn. Namely, how not to be so big of an A-Hole.
Shayne holds two high-ranking black belts, and enjoys conversing about anything Marvel, Magical, or Mythological. You might find him writing in a coffee shop near you, cackling madly into his computer screen while pounding shots of espresso.
alliwolfchild on October 12, 2017 Verified Purchase Mr. Silvers has outdone himself. Every book gets better and better. This book continues Callie’s story (first book was Unchained), and the reader gets to watch her grow, learn new things about herself, and meet new allies. There are many literary references in the story, as well as amusing references to today’s society. He had me laughing on the second page, and that lasted throughout the book with little gems here and there.
One thing I admire about his books is his ability to engage readers through a smooth plot line. The story just flows, rolling and scooping up readers as it goes. The characters are both enchanting and hilarious, leaving the reader to wonder what comes next.
Kudos to Mr. Silvers for an excellent, entertaining read!
“[S]o many new faces coming to Missouri – gods, legends, and nightmares” ... and assorted other monsters and wizards too. Don’t worry, folks, you’ve got Callie Penrose, rookie monster killer, in your corner! What, that doesn’t reassure you? For shame, as our gal Callie is up for the task in “Rage”, book 2 of Shayne Silvers’ new “Feathers and Fire” series.
It’s no surprise to readers who have followed other series, the highly addictive “The Temple Chronicles” that this series and its star are already getting wonderfully layered and complex. The kindle blurb does a good job summarizing the plot, so no need to restate it here, but it is quite a doozy (though I do strongly suggest that the excellent “Unchained” before starting “Rage”) with an excellent cast of supporting characters. A total thrill ride that I can’t but highly recommend.
The Feathers and Fire series is supposed to have Dracula somewhere in a later book, so, I continue until then, with Rage by Shayne Silvers, second book. It had its moments but wouldn’t call it good.
My Opinion: It feels like reading a potato salad. Overall, a uniform story, sure, but there’s so many bits and pieces added into it, some of which here clearly for substance only, not at all for flavor. Was a chore to read, not going to lie. Callie is annoying at best, sometimes good and kind, other times trying to prove she has an edge by making lame dirty jokes and stressing that she’s definitely not politically correct. You know what they say about having to say it? Yeah.
A 2 out of 5, lack of engagement makes it a difficult read.
Caught between the forces of Heaven and Hell, Callie finds new allies and new powers to help her fight to remain alive and independent of those who would claim her as their own, or have her die to further their plans (or hinder their enemies).
Shayne Silvers continues to be one of my fave "new" writers! His stories are interesting, fun, snarky, paranormal adventure stories with good "people" (who aren't always human!) and great details. I can "see" the story play out in my mind as I read ... when I can manage to slow down my reading enough to "watch" the movie in my mind. My biggest problem with his writing is that I tend to rush my reading, unless I make a deliberate effort to slow down, because I'm caught up in the story and want to know what's going to happen next. Then I remind myself that I wouldn't REALLY try to watch a movie using fast-forward, so trying to read tooooo fast is not REALLY what I want to do with Shayne's book. This is the second book about Callie, so new readers definitely need to read the first one, first. It would also be helpful to have read Shayne's "Nate Temple" series, at least up to the point where Callie is introduced in that line of stories -- this IS a spin-off from Nate's story line, but other than some occasional references to Nate (not too often, just once in a while), Callie's stories are stand-alone. Well worth reading -- and yes, I've actually purchased all of the Nate and Callie books for my Kindle !!
Another masterpiece by this author. He awes me with his writing and imagination. The combinations of supernatural creatures, religious figures, as well as a totally unexpected but brilliant character addition in this book took that even further and blew my mind. I can't wait until January for more Feathers and Fire, and Nate Temple and his merry crew as well. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves to read any genre.
Silvers continues his production line without a hitch, steamrolling another exceptional installment of his works out to readers and sculpting another segment of his universe into place with the usual myriad of small hints and subtle touches, adding more layers of mystique to the overall structure of the world's larger story beyond the scope of how even the characters themselves yet can see. The quality of writing continues to hold steady and while not as dramatic as some of his twists and turns in prior works, instead he baits the lead and leaves the reader to come shuffling along as he tugs at the reel little by little through the story.
A bit wrung out and confused, a bit wiser, and more than a little pissed off, protagonist Callie Penrose is challenged in her second literary outing in both the literal and metaphysical sense, facing dangers from without and within at the same time. Set between her first novel and the latest Nate Temple novel Wide Side, she is still uncertain as to many of the issues her encounter with Nate Temple drew to light, especially in regards to the elements that seem to be shared by the two of them and how much there is still unknown between them, in regards to what she knows of him and what she even knows of herself. We don't get too much insight beyond a few fleeting mentions here and there, but it is obvious that her path and Nate's are set to cross more than a few times in the future just yet beyond her appearance in Wild Side.
The pace of the novel executes quickly, but the contents are drawn out and develop slowly through the scope of Callie's perspective, much of the novel pertaining to her own introspection as she tackles hurdle after hurdle thrown her way. There is as mentioned anger, a slow boil that peaks at the novel's climax, but wrapped in hesitation, confusion, self-doubt and strained trust that rises and falls as she processes the things and people she encounters. Despite the supernatural happenings, the novel feels very much focused on Callie's sense of self in all too mundane and human ways.
That said the supernatural elements themselves are as prominent as ever, and Callie doesn't let her introspection get in the way of a fight. Encountering yet more elements of the supernatural world beyond what she knew, she encounters faces new to her and readers alike, some new to her but familiar to readers, and fresh perspective on some she'd already encountered before. It works as a slower, more subtle build to her place of importance within the plot and the local topography as it changes due to the events of the previous novel and events within Nate Temple's storyline. Even outside her direct spheres of influence, as the mundane human world is becoming more aware of the things that lurk in the dark and rally in fear and anger alike to denounce it. While not as overt as say, a war on a legion of Greek legends patroned by a Greek goddess, it sets a suitable scene and sense of tension for Callie and her friends.
The journey of self identity is steeped in the magical as much as pure introspection, as Callie is learning to embrace and expand the new, foreign powers within herself and how it fits in place with the image she already has of who she is and where she belongs in the scheme of things. It never reaches the point of internal or external crisis, instead putting a spotlight on the people close to her or those new to her who make dramatic impressions on her in the course of the novel, almost as mirrors revealing new facets to herself. She is not drastically altered by what she finds or the decisions she makes, instead standing as a resolute protagonist who rather is naturally growing into more of herself. In a genre where deus ex machina drop from the sky regularly and twists and turns can be graphed out ahead of time for most stories, it is refreshing to see a more organic take on the way a character develops themselves.
The climax itself is rather quick, but executed well and shows snapshots of Callie's potential as well as dropping more hints as to what might be behind many of the unanswered questions about herself. Rather than rolling right into her actions in Wild Side, it takes the time afterwards to have Callie get her house in order and lets her leave off on her own note rather than hopping right back onto the flow of Nate Temple's storyline. One of the concerns I'd had at some of her initial interactions with Nate was that their connection would become too tangible too quickly and result in too much of an overlap with one another in their series, but thus far Silvers has been of no mind to rush, letting their smaller encounters speak as much if not more so than their larger, longer engagements together and building things bit by bit for a rock solid foundation.
What an excellent follow up, kick-ass story!! I'm slowly becoming obsessed with this series and world (I will be starting the Nate Temple series asap!), and I'm loving getting to know Callie more and seeing how her powers develop. Shayne Silvers, you devil, dragging out the revelation of Callie's powers and supernatural history for as long as you can! I see you, milking it because you know we will stay loyal and keep reading because we're hooked. Well, I say to you sir that I am lactose intolerant and am dying to get to the bottom of it! Well done on this second installment, it being just as good or even better than the first! I'm a sucker for even the slightest romance though and wished Nate had been in this book more, but I get why he wasn't. Now I'm desperately hoping that they get together later on, which they obviously will because of the powers they both have, duh ;)
I loved getting to know the new characters (Dear and Darling are my new favorite characters!), and different types of "Freaks" and how they roll. The addition of Detective Bennett to Callie's team roster was perfect, and I can't wait to see if he's in any future adventures. I also can't wait to see how Claire's story develops! Simply put, awesome series, and I am now a loyal follower of this world. Plenty of action and mystery. Shayne Silvers successfully was able to weave for the second time a mystery that kept me guessing until the end!
Where to start with this? It’s only a few weeks after the chaos of Unchained, the first book in this series, and already the shifters, magic users, and demons are out causing trouble in Kansas City again. And it’s up to Callie Penrose and her mentor Roland, the local Shepherd, to stop them.
Callie is particularly worried for her friend Claire who was scratched by a werebear during the previous fighting. Now it appears that Claire too will become a werebear, and Callie goes to visit the bears looking for revenge. Instead, she finds that the culprit was a rogue bear and that the other bears in the cave are basically honorable.
But that doesn’t stop a lot of other bad things from happening. Amira, who Callie thinks of as the sister of the demon, Johnathan, from the previous attack, is back in town – or perhaps she never left. And once again the demon is causing conflicts between various groups of shifters, between various groups of magic users, and between Regulars and magic users. Every time Callie thinks she has one group figured out, somebody else comes up causing trouble.
She meets up with characters of legend and fiction, such as Cain, the first murderer, and Dorian Gray. And Nate Temple makes a cameo appearance, although he doesn’t play as large a role as in the first book.
Eventually, Amira gets sorted out. But there are still so many questions….
Callie Penrose is back and she’s dealing with some anger issues. I know it hasn’t been too long since the first book in the series came out but I was chomping at the bit to get my hands on this latest novel. Based in the Templeverse, we see all manner of magical creatures in Callie’s city, from vampires to Nephilim, but those are the least of Callie’s problems as she finds herself facing the elusive demon, Amira, whilst trying to deal with rogue shifters and religious zealots.
As always, I loved the complexity of the storyline and Shayne once again threw us a curveball or two. Some very interesting characters were introduced and I’m pretty curious to see how their stories will unfold. My one concern when starting Rage was that, now she’s overcome her fears and proved she’s a total badass, Callie would become a little too similar to that lovable scamp Nate Temple. However, I feel that Callie really held her own, we got to see some new sides of her and I’m super excited to get to know her more in upcoming books.
This book had me hooked from start to finish, never a dull moment. Now I have to endure the torturous wait before the next book’s release. I highly recommend checking it out, as well as Shayne’s other series.
Callie, Mr. Silvers’ newest character, is back in her second book. After getting rid of Jonathon, Callie must now track down his sister, but new problems keep cropping up: her best friend has a unique problem, she needs to find out about a new church in town, and Roland is going to Italy to try and help catch the mole in the organization. Not to mention her new abilities. But soon, she is surrounded by deaths, and she is the only one who can get to the bottom of them. I absolutely adore this series! This addition to the series was even better than the first one which is saying something as I just loved it, too. Callie is a great all-around capable character who takes no prisoners…usually. She kicks butt and takes names, all the while being sympathetic and nice. Not to forget the side characters; they were all interesting and wonderful, including the addition of some new ones. I can’t wait to find out more about them. The plot is a whirlwind of twists and action that keeps you guessing until the very end…and wishing you could read the next book right away. If you love urban fantasy, give this one a try; you won’t regret it!! Highly recommend! Thanks to the author for the e-book which I reviewed voluntarily.
In the 2nd installment of the Feathers & Fire series, we learn more and more about Callie. I’m still not 100% sure exactly what she is, and maybe the author meant it to be that way. We see new alliances forming for Callie, some for pure reasons, some not, but as Callie’s world builds – things get more and more intricate. This series is set in Nate Temple’s world, and Nate does make a brief appearance and he’s mentioned often, but this book is all Callie and the group she is building around her. I think that the author is settling much better into this character than he did in the first book, and I’m liking the Kansas City world (this series) as much as St. Louis (Nate’s city). I like to see them intertwine once in a while, but Callie is definitely coming into her own. This series has a lot more religious undertones to it than the Nate Temple series, even though it’s not preachy, and no one should be offended, one way or the other.
The action scenes were spot on, and the suspenseful part of this book kept you guessing until the end, the twists and turns the book takes was pretty sweet. There are still a few things that need to come into enlightenment, but even though this series is a spin-off, it’s definitely earning it’s way.
Callie Penrose's adventures continue and she has a lot to learn about the magical community in Kansas City. After defeating a demon intent on using her sacrifice to open a door to hell, Callie has to come to terms with the aftermath. Her mentor, Roland leaves for the Vatican to sniff out a suspected mole and Nate Temple, who helped her with the demon issue, has stuff to do back in St. Louis, leaving Callie alone with the monsters in her city. One of the things that I really like about this book is that Callie spends most of it staggering around like a clueless idiot. She doesn't suddenly develop uber confidence. She doesn't ask all the right questions or make all the right decisions. She acts like anyone with limited experience would act when being forced to act on their own for essentially the first time. She hesitates. She second guesses herself. She doesn't immediately or miraculously have all the answers just because she's the main character. However, she does seek advice, she learns from her mistakes, and she never gives up. I can't wait to see what she does next!
I started reading this series, for obvious reasons, (I LOVE NATE TEMPLE), and Callie Penrose kicks serious butt! I'm a stickler for reading books in order, so I'm back pedalling to the stories I missed. (while reading Nate's adventures in books 1-8)
This book fills in some of the blanks you'd expect in a sequel. I really enjoyed the first book and can't wait to jump right into book 3, here directly. It's a lazy Saturday, so reading till my eyes blur is acceptable. 😂 Part of me hopes there might be a movie or tv show, eventually, but either way, I'm keen to learn more about Callie, her parents, their reasons for abandoning her and everything else inbetween.
We meet new characters, Master Shayne never fails in this department, and I love the continuous story line. Oh! I can't wait to find out more information on D&D! Clapping with glee. Psst... I used to play that game, too. Telling my age now.😂 So if you 'are' looking for a brand new series to read, this is it!
When I bought the first book (originally drawn to the cover art) I didn't realize this was part of another book series world. I have not read the Nate Temple series. So the first book had a few side characters in it that I was not familiar with and felt a little confused until I realized they were from the other series. However, that book got me hooked on Callie. This is such a unique and fun world. The heroine is funny, likeable, and definitely not a pushover. This book really had Callie coming into her own. Her mentor goes out of town and leaves her in charge of the two problems brewing. I liked the intro of the cop. The twist for Claire was interesting. I liked the intro of other freaks and that Callie is building relationships. It makes me excited to see what's next. If you are on the fence, take a chance on this series. It's worth it.
THIS REVIEW STANDS FOR THE FIRST FOUR BOOKS... so yes they are the same.
A tale of a female protagonist who doesn't know who she is, working for the church and mouthy as hell. Honestly it is pretty mundane for urban fantasy (not a complaint, I am writing a book that isn't really any different either).
While filled with some cliches, and not the most fresh take it is interesting. The characters are good (I like Callie), the storyline is interesting enough. There is something extra that I can't quite point out (which is why I bought the next five books, they come in three book sets for the first six books).
It is a good read, goes pretty quickly but don't expect something revolutionary. Its like an American Diner experience, it doesn't surprise, but it does hit the notes you want and leaves you full
Wittier and more fun than the last book.. This book gave me a few 'Alice In Wonderland' vibes. Not the story or anything like that, but just some characters and a few situations. I sort of expected the cheshire cat to make an appearance! Sadly, that did not happen. Moving on... I really did enjoy this. The story is addicting! I want more each time. Callie does a little more growing up in this book, but it doesn't change her as a person - which would be a tragedy if it did. She is by far by favorite heroin of all time! She is everything a girl could hope to be, really. Well, in most cases. She is definitely more than anyone really knows, as of yet. But she was gifted with something incredible.
This series is seriously amazing. Worth every minute and worth every penny. Now, let's see what whispers has to offer....
This review is hidden for spoilers, but I loved this book!! I thought it was far better than the first one, things really amped up in pace and figures/plotlines involved, and still left on enough of a cliffhanger that I can't wait to read the next one!!
Seeing Callie grow as she accepts Claire will shift, and helps her best friend to be safe, accepting that Roland is away and she must tackle things for herself head on is awesome.
I LOVE Beckett and I hope he's back next book, Dorian Gray was written very well as was Cain, I love their characters and the part they play in the finale.
Callie is absolutely bad ass, figuring out the murders and the mystery, accepting and ending the fight with Amira the demon in the way she did, and accepting herself - that she doesn't have to change, and choosing the white feather being the right choice was perfect. 10/10.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Callie isn't on her way. She has arrived in full blazing glory. As she tries to understand variant powers, chaos erupts in KC. The scene has expanded with Claire's riotous growth as a character, and the introduction of new characters (two hilariously familiar to some Fans, and one not completely new). Yes, the accustomed action, humor, emotion, and attitude fly full force. I refer to this as a singularity story: the vortex draws in the reader, and the further you go, the more impossible escaping its gravitational pull becomes. You need to start reading. Then you need to continue, need to finish, need more...and as this book exposes, Need is the key to the Silvers. http://www.shaynesilvers.com/l/765/
I really like the interplay between the characters and how even new players have well formed back stories - and the many from literary fiction masterpieces.. Watching Callie grow in her abilities and confidence is very inspiring - and "Clairebear" as well! Even Roland appears to have more confidence in his young charge! The fact that justice was served and the "Freak" factions are coming to some realizations is just icing on the cake. And in the end, Missouri does love company.. LOL There were a few other very important lessons of morality from the author.. Yes Shayne, I definitely picked up on them. Now the rest of you need to buy the book and find them for yourselves...
Callie Penrose does know who she is or where she came from. She just knows she was raised a Catholic school and a Shepherd learning to fight with all kinds of weapons even her body. Just within the past few weeks her magic had gotten stronger. She found she might be related to Angels? Strange beings showed up in her town some friends some powerful but she was to protect the innocent. Freaks or human or shifters or Gods among them all were her division to care for. She has barely learned what is going on but the magic is changing all over in her friend Nate's home area too. I love the twists and turns and the end of the chapter always makes you wonder what more will happen. We have a few months more to wait for the authors great flowing adventures. Thank you! Hurry!
Wild rides are Shayne Silvers’ specialty, and he certainly does not disappoint with Callie‘s latest adventure. He is an absolute master at seeding his stories with tiny little tidbits and details that someone unused to this world will read and forget. Once you have read a Shayne Silvers novel, you will learn that none of these are unimportant and that all of them will come back to have significance in the story. Even knowing all this, Callie’s 2nd book still managed to surprise me with shock and delight at the twists and turns taken as she battles seemingly both Heaven and Hell to find herself and to keep those she loves safe from harm. Do yourself a favor and get comfortable before you crack this one open. It will be awhile before you are able to put it down!
Fantastic sequel to the first Feathers and Fire book. Callie Penrose, Kansas City resident Shepherd trainee is striking out on her own. Religious zealots call for the deaths of Freaks like Callie, whose magical powers clearly go beyond just your normal wizard. Without the help of her mentor and St. Louis' famous wizard, she's got to figure out who is murdering freaks in KC, plus her best friend is turning into a bear. She is her own special form of sassy. Her new friend Beckett discover an underworld of Freaks plus face an old demonic foe. Fast-paced and fun! Shayne Silvers does it again. Another #1 Amazon Bestseller!
I probably should have read this book before Warhammer (Nate Temple #8) but it didn't make much difference to the story line. While reading Warhammer I did consider swapping to Rage (Callie Penrose#2) but decided not to change. Callie is a force to be reckoned with, unleashed in this story by (Roland) her ' bodyguard' a shepherd working for the Vatican. We are introduced to Darling & Dear in this book which explains their connection to Nate's new accessory in Warhammer, Amira is back and Claire has to face a new future. I'm heading over to Whispers (Callie Penrose#3).
Rage is yet another of Shayne’s page turners. The plot of book 2 seems a bit tamer compared to the first book, and then here comes Shayne with a curve ball and introduces us to a couple of characters that ultimately turn out to be well known by all of the Legends the series introduces.
Along with introducing new characters to the temple verse, this book lays a lot of the groundwork that becomes the foundation and framework later on in the series. And if you think the book has slow points, don’t worry the other books more than make up for any crazy you feel is missing here, the pace of this story is almost the calm before the storm.
I really wanted to like this series. There was a lot of gems that showed a lot of potential. But the main character is difficult to like. Maybe if I was late teens, early twenties, I could ignore most of the issues, but constantly being rude and aggressive while other characters deal with it because she is “smoking hot”... please. Personally, I read to get to know the main character(s) whilst also going on a journey with them and I couldn’t do that because the main character was annoying and had no depth or apparent personality. The author has a real gift, and I hope they continue to grow as a writer, as they have plot points which where original and fascinating.
Alright, mea culpa! I admit that it took me a book to warm up to Callie. But I a solidly a fan after book two. There was excitement, twists and humor. I didn't find it predictable though Shayne dropped hints at where it was going. I do admit to a bit of fog surrounding the end. Perhaps that is intentional but I'm really certain what the choice was. Oops, that may be a spoiler. Anyway, look forward to book three though I'm planning to raz Shayne to deliver before 1/2018.
This is the second of Feathers and Fire, the Callie Penrose series....
We kind of get an idea of who she is evolving into in book one, but holy cow this book! There is a ton of mystery, intrigue and investigating with Mr. Silvers wonderful supernatural world front and center with an amazing finish and my favorite...lots of snarky dialog.
Oh and one of my favorite characters/things in the book is the introduction to Darling & Dears........a very intriguing couple who make very special leather goods.........seriously every woman would want them in their world.
Great sense of humour, strong when she needs to be I initially came to Unchained, the first book in the Callie Penrose series, after reading books in the Nate Temple series but even though Nate Temple also features in these books, you don't need to have read them first. Callie is a great main character having a great sense of humour, being able to be strong when she has to which she combines with a strong moral compass and passionate loyalty. It’s great to learn more about her and her chosen family in this book and I'm already awaiting the next book in the series with eager anticipation.
