Kate Marshall lives an enviable life. Married to handsome, charming, James, owner of a successful company, she seems to have it all.

An unputdownable, complex and twisty psychological thriller about mothers and daughters – fans of Shalini Boland, Liane Moriarty and Jane Shemilt will love this gripping read.
A Mother Like You by Ruby Speechley is a great psychological, domestic thriller.
I was invested in A Mother Like You from the first page. There is so much family drama and suspense throughout the novel. I was so curious to see what would happen next. This story had many unique twists that I didn’t see coming. Some of these twists were important topics that are not talked about frequently. While I figured out Kate’s secret, I didn’t figure out James, or Elizabeth’s secrets. Elizabeth is Kate’s mother who she went years without talking to. I enjoyed reading about the difficult relationship between Kate and Elizabeth. Revelations of secrets really affected their relationship. I liked finding out the secrets and seeing how it affected them.
Thank you NetGalley and Hera Books for A Mother Like You.
Kate Marshall lives an enviable life. She's married to James who owns a successful business. But falling pregnant at forty five wasn't part of her plan. Especially as Kate's hiding a devastating secret, one she's been hiding for twenty years. When ex-boyfriend Paul comes back into her life threatening to expose the truth about what Kate did. Can Kate keep her secrets and finally be the mother she's always dreamed of or will the kids of her past destroy her perfect life.
Kate seems to have it all but things are not all they seem to be. Kate is giving a presentation when she sees a face from her past. Paul is her ex-boyfriend and he starts blackmailing her. Her mother, Elizabeth , who she's been estranged from, is ill. Elizabeth also has secrets she wants to share. The story is told from Kate's point of view and from Elizabeth's many secrets. I was pulled into the story from thenfirst few chapters. Kate's secret is eventually revealed near the end of the book and it was shocking and unexpected.
I would like to thank #NetGalley, #HeraBooks and the author #RubySpeechley for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Kate and James are happily married. They have a successful business that allows them to travel, to do the things they love to do.
Finding out at age 45 that she's pregnant is not something she could have foreseen. Before they were married, they both decided that they would have no children.
She can't keep this a secret for long. She's been hiding a secret from 10 years ago and the past is catching up to the present. An ex comes out of the woodwork, threatening to reveal her secret if she doesn't pay him a lot of money.
Kate is not the only one with a secret .... James is also hiding something.
Will their lies and secrets destroy their perfect life?
Twists and turns abound in this novel about relationships, marriage, motherhood, pregnancy, and many lies and secrets. The plot is tightly woven with solid characters weaving through a perfect life that isn't so perfect. It's complex and holds the reader's attention from start to finish. The surprising ending was the icing on the cake.
Many thanks to the author / Hera Books / Netgalley for the digital copy of this psychological drama. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
Kate had a wonderful life with husband James, but found herself pregnant and they had no space for a baby, so they thought. At the same time, her ex started blackmailing her. And then came the threatening messages. Her relationship with her mother was not too great. Life was a minefield for Kate.
Initially the book appeared to be a thriller as there were quite a few twists. Author Ruby Speechley managed to capture the right ambiance in the book. I could sympathize with Kate as she found hurdles everywhere. I liked her dedication to keeping the baby.
As the book progressed, it slowly transformed into family secrets and drama. It was multi generational where I got to know the ladies. My emotions seesawed between empathy and anger. I liked how the author could draw out my emotions.
The reveals in the book had a lot of pathos. The suspenseful story soon brought out the truths hidden in the past which was actually based on society’s reality in the 1950s.
Overall, the book managed to surprise me, pitching me from stormy seas of a thriller to the placid waters of family saga, where I knew there were secrets swimming at its depths.
Kate is in her forties and married to James and together they are high flying power couple. Each hiding a secret the other mustn't find out. Kate finds out she is pregnant and that wasn't in their life plan.
Kate then starts to receive threats and texts and her ex boyfriend Paul demands money or he will spill her secret to everyone. When she starts receiving life threatening texts she warns Paul to back off, only the didnt send them.
With Kate watching her back, coming to terms with the fact that James doesn't want to be a dad and her mother's failing health things start to fall apart.
This is a slow burner that really plays with your mind. I love the gripping chapters and I really thought I had it sussed only to have my mind changed in the next chapter.
At first, I was ploughing through this book and read over 100 pages in a day and that’s unheard of for me.
BUT…
It took a very long time for the big reveal to happen and before then, it was a lot of skirting around the subject and it became very repetitive and slightly boring, which took away from the impact of the reveal of Frankie.
Don’t even get me started on the most pointless character of Izzy. Why was she included? It added nothing to the plot and did not matter in the slightest.
What really disappointed me was probably the last third of the book. Not a lot happens for the first two thirds, so that leaves EVERYTHING happening in the last third and it’s all very rushed and convenient how things slot into place for a happy ending.
I’ve seen other reviewers say that this is marketed as a thriller and I find that very strange as it’s very domestic.
I’m really disappointed by this book, as it started off so well. I understand that the point of it was about generational trauma, but it just missed the mark for me personally. It was repetitive, slightly boring and the “happily ever after” ending was so convenient that I even guessed that they would end up having a boy and naming him Edward.
I feel so bad for not enjoying this one as I was so invested at first. I’m going to give another of her books a try, and then determine whether to keep getting Speechley’s books or whether she simply isn’t my taste.
If you’ve read the review all the way to here, thank you! :)

Kate is happily married to James. When she finds out she is pregnant at forty five years old it’s not what she wants. She also has a secret. When her ex turns up blackmailing her she is terrified her secret will be revealed.
This is a well written story that I read in one afternoon... I just had to keep reading to see what was gonna happen next.
I’m looking forward to reading more from this author in the future.
I really enjoyed this one and was instantly gripped. Quite a lot happens in this story. Kate is pregnant her husband isn’t happy, she had a previous child but he isn’t aware. Her ex is back threatening to expose her secret. Also she did something bad to the child but the story isn’t telling you what.
I managed to get through this one quite quickly. It was a good story, but did nearly lose my interest at the end as it started getting a little unrealistic.
This book really surprised me! I enjoyed it way more than i was expecting and found it hard to put down. Would definitely recommend giving this a read.
I got through this book reasonably quickly. Written well it flowed nicely and enough intrigue that made me want to come back to it at the next chance. I wasn't too shocked by any of the twists, in-fact I guessed most of them but that's not nessecarily a bad thing!
3.5- his was a great little thriller that kept me interested and although it was a slow burn the story was gripping from the start. This follows the main character of Kate, who is married and has fallen unexpectedly pregnant at the age of 45. Kate however has been keeping a secret for 20 years and her ex Paul comes on to the scene trying to blackmail her or he will expose her secret.
This kept me intrigued and I read it quite quickly, I didn’t guess what the secret was and thought it was good when it was revealed. I warmed to the character of Kate and was desperate to find out what she had done that was so terrible. I liked the changing perspectives in the book and the inclusion of text messages which broke up the text. I would recommend this one 😊
I am always grateful to receive ARCs from NetGalley and Publishers, though it makes it that bit harder to write a review when you didn't think it was great.
Overall, I would give it 3* - I found the characters quite one dimensional and whilst the premise of the novel is very interesting the protagonists are immensely predictable and the lack of depth to their characters makes them quite unrelatable and engaging. In essence, you (or I did), become bored with the lack of complexity within a group of characters that had so much potential to be SO MUCH MORE. I am left feeling a little frustrated that this perhaps could have benefitted from some 'fresh eyes' and careful edits.
For example, the trauma that Kate's mother went through, being abandoned, neglected, devastatingly reunited with a twin who died mere days later... wow, harrowingly stuff - yet it is dealt with so fleetingly, so simplistically, that it almost amounts to nothing in your comprehension of what she went through and your empathy for her and the consequences that would come to impact generations to come.
Unfortunately, this is but one example where I feel like this book could have been incredible... but alas, fell just short.
It isn't a bad book and would be a good pool side read but I am left with a lingering feeling that it could have been incredible with some development. I mean, quite literally, the 'big twist' really did get me, I was convinced I knew who the other perpetrator was but it just wasn't enough in light of the novels other failings.

I have been a fan of Ruby’s work for a while now. In fact I have been a fan of her work ever since I was lucky enough to read her debut novel. Since then I have read and loved each book that she has released. ‘A Mother Like You’ by Ruby Speechley is Ruby’s latest book and it is another cracker of a read. I thoroughly enjoyed every single second of ‘ A Mother Like You’ but more about that in a bit. I can honestly say that I didn’t warm to the characters in this book at all but that’s not necessarily a negative thing because it meant that I didn’t favour one character over another. The lead character Kate Marshall got on my nerves a bit and I got the impression that she was not to be trusted and seems to be playing a ‘role’ as were. That said, I did feel for her when she fell pregnant at the age of 45 years old and I understood how conflicted she felt about the pregnancy. It’s clear that something happened in her past that she would rather remain hidden and she has been desperately trying to cover up all traces of what she did back in the day. Her husband James is a delight……not! Let’s just say that if he spoke to me in the way in which he speaks to Kate then I would not hesitate to have a go at him. He’s rude, arrogant, ignorant and downright selfish. I can’t say that I was too impressed with Paul, who is Kate’s ex-boyfriend and his attempts at blackmail. I also didn’t like Kate’s mother who seems like a right cold fish. Oh my word, ‘A Mother Like You’ was a deliciously creepy and at times disturbing read. To say that reading ‘A Mother Like You’ was addictive is a huge understatement. I would pick the book up only intending to read a couple of chapters but I would become so wrapped up in the story that I read many more chapters than a couple. I had my own suspicions as to what was going to happen and of course I had to keep reading to see if I was on the right lines or if I had the wrong end of the stick entirely. I seemed to be so wrapped up in the story that I managed to shut out all other distractions and I lost all track of time. All too quickly I reached the end of the book. ‘A Mother Like You’ is extremely well written but then I think that to be true of Ruby’s books in general. She has a way of grabbing your attention with an eye catching synopsis and then she entices you into the story. Once Ruby has your attention, she will not let you have it back until the moment you read the last word on the very last page. She creates intriguing characters with many more layers to their personalities than you would find on a wrapped up parcel in a game of ‘Pass the Parcel’. Strip one layer off then a few more emerge. There were more twists and turns to this story than you would find on a ‘Snakes & Ladders’ board. I found ‘A Mother Like You’ to be a tightly plotted, gripping read that had me on the edge of my seat throughout. In short, I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘A Mother Like You’ and I would definitely recommend this book to other readers. I will certainly be reading more of Ruby’s work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.
A Mother Like You is one of those books that will make you angry because of how hypocritical so many of the characters are. Secrets and lies abound within these pages, and when they start coming out into the open, things get messy. The story opens with an unnamed woman screaming at her crying newborn to stop. Stop crying. Stop making noise. Just stop. And then...well, I won't spoil anything. Ominous. Dark. Sets the tone and makes you wonder how that scene will come back into play later on (because you know it will). Kate is a 45 year old woman, married to her loving husband of ten years, James. Neither of them have plans to ever have kids, preferring to live their lives as they please, with no responsibilities or ties to one certain spot. They're free and loving it. Until Kate gets pregnant. And then her past comes back to haunt her in the form of her ex, Paul. How does Kate manage this new complication? You'll have to read and see for yourself. I really liked this story. It's tense. It's fraught with stressful moments. And it will tick you off something fierce. At least it did for me. I was so angry and annoyed with James a lot of the time, although Kate frustrated me too sometimes. And Paul...ugh. Hated him. Everyone seemed to enjoy piling on Kate and blaming her for so many thing, accusing her of just making excuses. But what did any of them really do? I really related to Kate in a lot of ways, which is why I think I was so annoyed by how everyone around her seemed to be treating her when the truth of her past was starting to come to light. Being a mother isn't easy. It's not all sunshine and rainbows. And sometimes you just don't bond with your baby right away. It sucks, but it happens. And because I know how that is, I felt for Kate. I understood her. And I wanted to hug her and tell her she wasn't alone when everyone else was blaming her for things. She had a terrible moment, sure (and she shouldn't have done what she did, that's for sure), but she made what she thought was the best decision for herself and everyone else at the time. She wasn't making excuses. She was just being honest. That's how I saw it. As for the plot, it's definitely a quick pace, keeping you on edge, wondering who, exactly, the other person sending her threatening messages could be. I suspected at least two people, but the person it ended up being I had forgotten about, so it kind of took me by surprise. Especially with the one scene near the end. Overall, this was a pretty great psychological thriller. It kept me glued to the pages, so if you're looking for something exciting to read, give A Mother Like You a whirl. 4.5 stars!
First, I want to thank Ruby Speechley, Hera Books, NetGalley and Rachel’s Random Resources for providing me with this book so I may bring you this review.
WOW!! Ruby Speechley definitely has an unbelievable talent writing Psychological Thrillers. Her latest book A Mother Like You needs to be put on your TBR list as it is a must read for 2020!! I literally could not put the book down until I knew every mystery solved in this book! Needless to say I am now an instant fan! She is definitely going on my favorite author list!
Ruby starts out the story with a very intense prologue that will grab your attention quickly. It ends with a cliffhanger and we are to wait to see how it ties into the story. However, when we do find out oh boy it is shocking!
A Mother Like You is extremely fast paced, very suspenseful, so many mysteries within the main storyline, drama galore, family secrets, shocking twists and turns, and revelations you did not see coming.
Ruby discusses some important topics in this book like Abortion, Scarlet Fever, Turburculosis, and parental abandonment.
I really liked the coincidences between Kate and her Mother about their pasts and how it affected their present. That was a very interesting storyline on how that all came out.
At first I didn’t care for James at all. He was firm on his belief and didn’t want to budge. He didn’t look at the big picture and was hurtful to Kate.
One of my favorite storylines was surrounding The Founding Hospital. According to Ruby it is a real place where women go to leave their babies if they weren’t able to bring them up themselves. Fun fact, Ruby actually went to visit the museum in London with her father. It is fascinating what she saw and learned while there.
A Mother Like You had a beautiful ending that put a smile and love in my heart on how all things came together so perfectly. There were times I didn’t think the book would end well!
A MOTHER LIKE YOU (Hera) by Ruby Speechley is a slow boil psychological thriller unlike any I've read recently. It's hard to put down and will keep you hooked from beginning to a very surprising ending. All mothers have secrets, some are unforgiveable and some create trauma that carries across generations.
Kate and James are married and have it all, but children were never in their plan until at 45, Kate finds herself pregnant and concealing a huge secret. Out of the blue, Kate's ex-boyfriend, Paul shows up trying to extort money from her or else he'll expose Kate's secret to James. Kate is caught between not having the money and fearful her secret will come out. But at the same time, James has secrets, too.
Kate and her mother were never close. She's been estranged from her mother for twenty years, after she told Kate her father wasn't really her dad. She's ill and now wants to share other secrets she has with her only daughter.
At the same time, Kate is receiving awful, threatening texts and calls and Paul says he's not sending them. So who? There's a tornado of secrets and shameful lies connected to everyone in this book. How can it end? I'm not telling you.
A MOTHER LIKE YOU is a book filled with interesting, complicated characters, who are hurt and several are facing abandonment issues. There are times towards the end of the novel, when all the truth telling felt as if it was going to cause more damage than healing.
I found Ruby Speechley's writing masterful and I think readers will too.
This starts off with a really dark prologue ending on a humongous cliffhanger. Setting you up nicely for intrigue and some puzzle solving.
We then get to meet Kate who is away at a conference, just as she blacks out at the podium, informing the audience of the days team building events. While there she spots the familiar face of ex boyfriend Paul and the blackmailing begins.
The blacking out and nausea all leads to the discovery that Kate is pregnant at 45. Her successful husband has always made it clear he didn’t want children even leaving a previous relationship over it. To top it all her mother is sick and also has secrets to spill.
There are a lot of characters I didn’t like in this book, especially Kate’s husband James. However I could also see his perspective having made very clear his feelings on not becoming a parent. I am in no way excusing his behaviour just offering my opinion on his reactions.
Then there are the many questions, who is it in the prologue? What happened between Kate and Paul that led to him blackmailing her? What secrets is her mother keeping? How will it all tie together?
I’ve now read all three of Ruby’s books and in my opinion she is one of the best at knowing how to pull you in and keep you interested. Her characters, love them or loathe them, just go from strength to strength and once you start one of her books you are hesitant to put it down again. An attention grabbing thriller and one of her best yet.
Thanks to NetGalley and to the publisher for the ARC, which I received in exchange for my honest review. A Mother Like You, is a dark domestic thriller about the perils of motherhood. Kate is a 45 year old happily married career woman when she finds herself unexpectedly pregnant. She and her husband had agreed to remain childless and thus Kate finds herself at a crossroads due to her unplanned pregnancy. To say that her husband finds her unexpected news unwelcome would be an understatement.
As if being unexpectedly pregnant at 45 wasn't enough. Kate begins to receive threatening messages and is extorted by a former boyfriend. What does he know that could send Kate's seemingly perfect life into a tailspin and is he really behind all of the sinister gifts Kate is receiving? Well, you will have to read the book to find out.
I found this to be a fast-paced, interesting read. I enjoyed the fact that the protagonist of the story was 45 years old rather than 20 something as is so often the case. I felt that Kate's fears about motherhood were realistic and her actions authentic. That being said, the final third of the novel just seemed unrealistic as everything but the kitchen sink was thrown Kate's way. If the author had simply kept to the initial focus of the story, I think this would have been a better bool.
“All mothers have secrets...some are unforgivable” Kate and her husband James have decided not to have a family only Kate now realises that she is pregnant. She really isn't sure about telling James as their whole world will change and she is 45 and thinking this may not last. She is getting texts and letters threatening her unless she pays £30kmoney she really doesn't have. We don’t know what this is yet about or who from, only that Kate has a secret past, a secret she has been keeping for over twenty years. Her ex Paul knows her secret and is threatening to tell . Meanwhile her mother whom she has been estranged from until recently is ill and also has her own secrets she now wants to share. Paul says the threats are not from him, so who is telling her that she should be dead? Oooh!! One of those reads that begins as slightly domestic noir and before you know it , there is that sense of unease that something is lurking. What on earth is Kate’s secret and who is the mystery person? This is brilliantly written and made me want to turn ever faster. A thrilling read and a captivating plot. Kate and James seem to have the ideal life with a good relationship, a successful business and an enviable lifestyle. However, all this is set to change when Kate learns that she is pregnant, and at aged forty-five, this has never been on her agenda, especially as James is adamant he doesn't want children.
What the follows is a twisty, turny, psychological thriller which looks at the complicated process of motherhood, especially when all is not as it seems either in Kate's present life or in her past. And as some really dark and complicated secrets threaten to overwhelm her, so Kate begins to look at the complicated relationship she has with her own mother and the heightened awareness that something has gone badly wrong in each of their secretive pasts.
A Mother Like You is one of those completely addictive stories which keeps you turning the pages long after you should have put the book away to do something else. The plot flows beautifully drawing you in ever deeper into a world of abandonment, trauma and deeply complicated secrets. The story is quite dark in places, with quite a lot of emotional issues being expressed but the author brings everything together in a realistic and very readable way.
Once again I find myself singing the praises of a book from Ruby Speechley. A Mother Like You is the third psychological thriller that she has written and is another outstanding read. I was completely gripped by this story, that is fraught with so much tension and kept me right on the edge of my seat.
I found the plot intriguing and it is not often that you read a story featuring a middle aged woman who finds herself pregnant, which makes for a refreshing change. It is a complex tale that has many layers to it and I enjoyed them being peeled back and taking me by surprise as the story progressed.
As always, Ruby Speechley’s writing is impeccable and her character’s are first class. She has you invested in them and each brings out different emotions within you. The plot is tightly woven, the pace is fast, the twists are compelling and the ending satisfying.
A Mother Like You is a dark, addictive and emotionally charged read. It consumes you and takes you over until you have read that final page. Ruby Speechley is such an exciting voice in the psychological thriller genre and I am looking forward to reading what she comes up with next.
Thank You Netgalley and Hera for granting me this book! This review is based on my complete honest opinion.
Kate Marshall seems to be living a life--married to a handsome and charming man James for ten years and running a successful company with her husband. But when ex-boyfriend Paul comes into picture, demanding her to pay some money, her past comes back crumbling as Paul threatened to reveal a secret about her, leaving behind the threatening messages...
The story was interesting. The plot line was good and the author really drew the reader into the story. It was unputdownable as well as the reader wants to know what this secret that Kate was actually hiding and there were some intense climax building up in the chapter. Towards the end, Kate's secret is revealed which is shocking and unexpected! Overall, it was actually a fast paced thriller. It had made me guessing until the end which was shocking!
Really a good fast paced unputdownable thriller where you will not be able to put down the book! Worth five stars!
