Marriage was supposed to be our happily-ever-after.
But it’s looking more like ‘the end’.

Nataya is my world. My rock. My wife.
Our marriage was perfect. Or so I thought.
Reality hits me hard when I come home to an empty bedroom and a scribbled note on our bed.
It’s over. Or so she thinks.
I’d rather lose my sanity than lose her.
I thought convincing Nataya to start again would be easy.
She still wants me. She stills sighs when I touch her. Still melts when I kiss her.
But there’s a secret standing between me and my wife.
I’ll have to do more than seduce Nataya to fix my mistakes.
If I want her, I’ll have to earn her.

⭐️ 3.5 "grovel-baby-grovel" Stars! ⭐️

“Stay right there, Nat. I’ll work for you. I’ll prioritize you.” He leans down and stops a breath away from my lips. “Let me earn you.”

Initial Thoughts!

AWWWWHHHH, I just love books that feature a husband groveling for almost the whole book. Sometimes you just need that, you know?

Earn Me may be a random book I found on Goodreads at 2am BUT I still had a good time. There's just something about what I'm gonna call ✨the husband apology tour genre✨ that just brings me joy. My favorite moment is that "oh shit" moment when the husband realizes he DONE GOOFED and the marriage looks like it's beyond repair. *sighs happily* While EARN ME didn't reinvent the wheel it definitely gave me what I was looking for. What can I say? Stone was no Sandro a la The Unwanted Wife , but then who is? Sandro's apology tour was probably one of the most legendary apology tours ever put to paper. . .thus I ask, will anyone ever top his groveling?

Watching Stone and Nataya navigate the minefield of unspoken feelings was a real treat to read. What I especially liked was that the marriage between Nat and Stone was seemingly perfect. From the outside looking in it seems like a fairytale romance. However, as I've said time and time again, you've gotta have -

C-O-M-M-U-N-I-C-A-T-I-O-N

When that breaks down well. . .everything else will crumble.

The Highlights

Stone - even though he done goofed

I have to say even though EARN ME was a #HusbandApologyTour book Stone - said apologetic husband - was actually, really sweet & romantic? I think what made this book so sweet - and so frustrating - was that he never meant to hurt Nataya. Essentially he became a workaholic because he wanted to give his wife everything that she had growing up - she came from a wealthy family - and he felt insecure that he couldn't give her those things. While I do think he went about things in not the greatest way you could tell that he was coming from a place of love. He wanted to give her the world, but in the process forgot that she didn't fall in love with him because of how much money he may or may not have, but she fell in love with him as a person.

Nataya - our disillusioned wife ✦ I really liked Nataya - for the most part. I liked that even though she was married to this pretty amazing guy she still chased after her own happiness. Her asking for a divorce and moving out broke her heart but at the same time she decided to put her own happiness first. She wasn't content in her marriage and she sought to change it. I respect that. Not only that but I liked that she didn't just take Stone back the first time he apologized. She really made him prove that he had changed and that he wouldn't put his own insecurities before her. In addition she made this really amazing point that I can't not highlight -

Like that is what all women should aspire to. Like not cheating is a miracle, unachievable, worthy of some kind of medal. Not cheating is the bare minimum.

What I found so striking in that is, she's right. I think there's this idea that if your husband isn't cheating on you he's this amazing wonderful man that deserves a round of applause. NO. Just, NO. Like Nat said, that's the bare freaking minimum. This book really showed that even though Stone didn't cheat on Nat - and would never cheat on her - she was still unhappy and its okay that she decided to fight for her happiness.

The Romance

I was really rooting for these two love-birds to repair their marriage. These two had some crazy chemistry that I adored, and when they weren't fighting they were super cute together. I loved that Stone met Nat when he was just this skinny 20-something-year-old and from the moment he first laid eyes on her he was clearly head over heels in love with her. EARN ME shows this couple learning to communicate and through this new-found communication they begin to fall in love again. While a bulk of this book was Nat trying to convince Stone she wanted a divorce - and him fighting to show that they didn't need one - in between those moments were glimpses into a couple that truly loved each other. They had this spark and connection that made me believe they could work through anything.

The Grovel ✦ So, as I mentioned in the Initial Thoughts portion of this review my favorite part of the #husband-apology-tour genre is, well, that grovel though. There is seriously something so satisfying about seeing a man just beg for forgiveness repeatedly past the point of comfortability. Now while this wasn't the most satisfying book in the #husband-apology-tour cannon it was still pretty entertaining! Personally, I think the groveling of a hero is even more satisfying when he's been a huge jerk and is so very clearly in the wrong, then when he realizes he messed up so bad he just has to lay it all on the line. I want to see begging, I want to see ego's being destroyed, I want to witness crying, I want it all.

*clears throat* anyway. . .

While Stone wasn't a huge jerk he did mess up pretty bad.

However, I actually feel like the was a symptom of a bigger problem, miss-communication. These two somewhere along the way just stopped talking to each other. It clearly got so bad that he didn't even communicate the WHY of why he didn't , and to play devils advocate, Nataya never really told Stone how lonely she was feeling due to him constantly working/traveling for work. But then, BUT THEN, Stoney my boy starts to pull his head out of his ass and put in work .

What hits me is the fact that he drops by every day to manage my business. Every. Day. He does that even when he won’t get praised or recognized for it. He does that thinking I don’t know.

Stone starts to show up, he begins to really listen to what Nataya wants, and most importantly, he realizes that he was ALWAYS enough.

Overall, the groveling present in EARN ME was very ✨satisfying

The. . .eh. . . Parts of the Book

Nat's Mom

This woman. . .I both liked her and also wanted to put her in a dark closet for time out. Look, I'm not a mom, and maybe if I was a mom I'd be more #teamNataya'sMom, but sadly my uterus is empty and shall remain so until further notice. Due to that, I was #teamStone / #teamReconciliation. Nat's mom started out entertaining / a giver of good advice, and then very quickly began to grate on my nerves. In the beginning Nataya's mom was actually giving good advice -

“Put the vodka down or I swear I’m going to dropkick my only child in the face.”

However, as the book goes on and Stone begins to really make moves towards patching up their marriage and MamaNataya starts to get in the way of that.

“I can’t. I can’t breathe without him, mom. I love him. I want to work on us. I want to give him a chance.”

For example, she basically tells Nat that she should divorce him, that the marriage falling apart was ALL his fault, that he's no better than her cheating father, that she should just leave the country, and that Nat should have zero have contact with him, etc. etc. etc. Basically, she was projecting HARD on Nataya, her marriage, and the whole situation. It started to greatly annoy me and I wanted her to just go somewhere else, please and thank you.

Let's Play the Blame Game ✦ I'm gonna be honest there was one quote in this book that supremely pissed me off, and I realized it was kinda the low-key theme of the book. Now usually what I love about the #husband-apology-tour book is that more often than not the husband is solely in the wrong so it's just so fun watching him spend the entire rest of the book groveling *cough THE UNWANTED WIFE *cough* however, here, not so much. I've gotta be honest while what Stone did was pretty horrible it was clearly more born from a miscommunication breakdown then maliciousness. And miscommunication is a two way street. So, when this quote popped up -

“Whatever goes wrong in our relationship is my responsibility. If I’d been doing my job, you wouldn’t have felt the way you did. If I’d been making you my number one priority, you wouldn’t have felt lonely.”

Ummmmmmm. . .what? I'm sorry but no. Sometimes, life happens. And sometimes you won't be able to be there for your spouse as much as you used to be, however, when that happens then it is time to - regroup, reassess, and reprioritize. However, you can't do any of that if your spouse and you don't communicate their needs to you. So for Stone to say, “Whatever goes wrong in our relationship is my responsibility [. . .]", really pissed me off. As Nataya had previously acknowledged -

“I married Stone so I could fix that loneliness, but he can’t change that, mom. Only I can. He was working hard to follow his dreams and I resented him for it [. . .]

Soooooo, what, PYSCH, everything was Stone's fault? I hate to break it to the happy couple buttttt, if you make it one persons job in the relationship to be in charge of what goes right and what goes wrong then there is bound to be another breakdown at some point. While I get what Stone was trying to say it still upset me that he felt that he was solely to blame for everything that went wrong.

Closing Thoughts!

EARN ME was a fun husband-grovels book that I throughly enjoyed. While it didn't dethrone THE UNWANTED WIFE it still gave me those feels that I was looking for. So, if you're looking for a nice, quick, grovel heavy romance, then EARN ME is the book for you!

Where do i start?

🤧

I love this trope so i devoured this book, such a page turner.

Everybody cares about the happily-ever-after in a story but what about years later?? This book deals with exactly the same topic.

You need a good groveling book? This is it. No seducing the other, no forcing, no doing shit that would make your skin crawl in reality. But actual ACTIONS to change and repair. 💯🙌

The characters of this book is flawed, selfish in their needs & deceit.

"At the beginning of the rollercoaster ride.
Last night was the climb. The chug up the rails
until I could see the very top. The perfect view. Stars dancing below us and inside us.
And now it’s time for the plunge. The steep curve down. The part of the ride where everybody chucks"

The real struggle is how to fix something when you don't know what's broken? This book deals with it in vivid details.

“This car isn’t complicated. It’s very simple. You give it gas, it runs. Give it orange juice, it breaks down. You give it attention and change the oil on time, you get a vehicle that doesn’t stop in the middle of a traffic jam. Very simple. The car is good. When you find a car, you find a good thing. But the driver of the car… now they’re the ones who need the training.”

This book tells us about the reasons the relationships/marriages falls out.

"Not cheating.
Ha.
Like that is what all women should aspire to. Like not cheating is a miracle, unachievable, worthy of some kind of medal.
Not cheating is the bare minimum.
Unfaithfulness shouldn’t even be mentioned as a tick in the pros column of a marriage. That’s like a doctor getting awarded because he got out of bed. Like a bear being lauded for waking up from hibernation. Like a kid getting ‘Citizen of the Month’ for not touching a flame."

It tells us about pain and heartache. And the ways we deal with it, thats there's no right way to deal with it.

"Pain is for someone who’s been hurt for the first time. For a kid who’s hand accidentally brushed a flame. Pain is for those who are blind, ignorant and innocent. When someone throws their hands into the fire over and over, they’re asking for it. They deserve exactly what they get."

This books is so So beautifully written that i lost myself today in it. 🖤

Hero: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Heroine: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Angst: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Chemistry: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Character development: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

And lets not forget that the real heroes don't wear badges. In this book, my absolute real hero was Doc (the mechanic/counsellor) i loved him the most 😍🥰

The ending? WOW, it was the satisfying climax i have read in a while.

"It’s perfect.
It’s everything.
This woman is my past, my present and my future.
To think that she almost slipped through my fingers—
Never again." 🤗

Spoiler ( reason as to why its not worth the read) 🚩🚩

The Hero had a vasectomy without telling the heroine. She finds out that he had done it 5 years ago. 🤚
Don't get me wrong, men and woman both have a choice as to what they do with their bodies but this man had a vasectomy and then lied about it to his wife, while she gushed about their future and their kids blaa blaa Blaa. Also if you don't want kids, there are other ways to go about it. Marriage is a commitment and between two people, he took her choice away from her. If that's not manipulative and repulsive 🤷🏻‍♀️ idk what is. 😐

Also there was no grovelling in this book, he used sex to bring her back to him. 🙄

I am sorry. I just couldn't take it anymore.

Somewhere, buried under all that weighty prose, is probably a good story. The problem is I just got so tired of waiting for it to happen.

The issue for me and why I bailed, was that the writing was way too, too much. Every sentence, every paragraph seemed to drown under emotional descriptiveness that did not allow the story to actually happen in a way that I could sink into the plot or the characters.

For instance:
"I grabbed my mother's cloak. The one that's invisible to everyone but me. I fold it over my body and wrap it around myself. I add spikes like a porcupine, and I shoot poisoned arrows out of my tongue.

"I've moved on."

Three words. They fill the air. Expand and grow until they're pushing against the glass walls and slamming against the door."

or

Waiting for Stone to come home from a trip.
To come home from work.
To be present for me.
Waiting.
Until it felt like I was living my life in spurts. In phases decided by his presence and his absence.
I lost me.
I lost me inside him.
So when we broke us I had only fractures of myself to work with. I couldn't find the rest.

I think the lyrical quality of these passages would be fine, even pretty evocative, if used sparingly. But both characters constantly have these internal monologues that are laden with symbolism, simile and metaphor. And a lot of the book in this first 1/4 was written with these long internal thoughty thoughts punctuated buy these quick little staccato paragraphs.

The wife left the husband because he did something -- by the time I stopped at 25% that had not yet been revealed -- and he is trying to get her back. I just wanted to get a good, maybe emotional, sexy story of marriage being repaired. I wanted to know what the hell happened and how the hell are they gonna fix it. I wanted to enjoy these characters as they fell in love. But none of that happened for me because I felt buried by artful prose.

So I gave up.

Not a bad romance, but just repetitive after a while. The ending I thought was a bit too rushed as well for real resolution. I would be interested in reading more from this author. I just think that the characters need to be developed beyond I love my wife and she's everything and I don't know how to quit my husband.

"Earn Me" follows married couple Nataya and Stone. Stone is a celebrity tattoo artist and after he returns home from a trip finds his wife Nataya gone. She leaves a note saying she is done. When Stone goes to her business later to find out what is going on she just tells him she's done and she hates him. Stone ends up going to a mechanic called Doc after a recommendation from a friend. Doc proceeds to talk about women while fixing up cars and gives Stone "chores" to do in order to rebuild his marriage. Hey I didn't write this so don't get mad at me. The book jumps back and forth between Nataya and Stone and what went right and wrong in their marriage.

So I have to say that I needed Stone and Nataya both to have a bit more depth. It takes us until I think the 30 percent point to find out what caused Nataya to finally say she was done with her marriage. And to me it's a doozy and not easily ignored. And honestly I don't know if I was in the same position I would have gone back to Stone. That said, they both needed marriage counseling and individual therapy (I am not counting Doc). Because Stone wasn't the only one who needed to change IMHO. Nataya had a ton of issues regarding how she was brought up and how lonely she was in her marriage.

The writing I thought could have had a bit more oomph I think. It just got very repetitive to me after a while with Stone going on and on about Nataya and her body, her skin, her smile, her hair. How he didn't want to be home without her. I got it the first dozen times. Besides him being into tattoos and good at his job I didn't really get much else from him. And I think that Nataya ran a clothing boutique. There wasn't' a lot to her either after a while. The flow was up and down. Maybe if the story had stayed with Stone it would have worked a bit better. Going back and forth between them slowed things down a lot. Especially because a scene would end on one of them and then you have the other person's immediate reaction.

The ending as I said was a bit rushed. I won't spoiled, but I needed more set-up there from Nataya's side of things.

I am...speechless.

First of all, I’m not even married yet, or have been in a serious relationship, yet this book resonates with me. Some of the issues seen here are think I studied in school, things that I am trying to work through on a smaller scale. I was literally crying to my mom about some of the same things days ago. I’m only 22, but the struggle for standing up for herself and for figuring out that she deserves more.... I felt that on a spiritual level.

I’m constantly feeling lonely or let down or just not a priority, in past friendships, in family relationships, but to see that other people have the same fears, the same needs, the same thoughts, I really let me know that it’s ok. It’s not a bad thing to want attention, not in a needy way, but just to know that some one cares about you.

Anyway, I will most likely keep this in my library. It is good to know that these issues are not just my own, and also things that can be overcome.

Also, Doc is my dude! Loved him! I need him!!! He seems like he would so wise in all aspects!

Nia Arthur’s writing is so intense and dramatic. I really enjoyed this second chance romance. It’s the perfect length and focuses on Nat and Stone, a couple who has fallen out after Nat realizes her husband has been lying to her for years about something really big! And he works so much on his tattooing business that he’s severely neglected their relationship. So now he has to earn her back!

I really liked the characters in this book and I was definitely rooting for Nat and Stone to eventually get back together. I did want more explicit sex scenes though. And I do wish Nat’s character was a little more fleshed out. She was mostly either despondent or angry about the state of her marriage, which, TRUE. Stone really did her dirty!!! But she vaguely owns a store and has an iconic mother that’s kind of all we know about her.

I really enjoyed Stone’s character arc though. I love that he basically went to therapy and that he still made mistakes until he realized his impatience and drive to get a quick fix for his betrayal was getting him nowhere. Also I LOVED DOC!!! I want him and Nat’s mama to get together!!!!! In the Author’s Note Arthurs mentions that her dad, who has a nonfic book giving romantic relationship wisdom, helped her write Doc’s parts of the book, which I think is adorable and cool!!!

I will be reading more Nia Arthurs!!!

So let me say that I dnf'd this book at 49% because at first I didn't like the suspense. It wasn't until 29% in the book that you found out what the husband did to make his wife leave him. Then the reason she left him was valid and justified. Like how dare you? Also, the couples poor communication makes it difficult to believe they lasted 7 yrs together without someone cheating or someone leaving someone. Also... I stopped at 49% because when they finally start talking to each other more or less... he says 'take your clothes off' and what does my girl do? I'll let you guess lol anyways... This book was not for me... I pushed through just to find out what he did and when I found out I was interested in seeing how she handles it, turns out I didn't like how she handled it 🤷🏾‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️

Good read 3.5 stars

I enjoyed the topic of the book. We never get to read about after the wedding when real life intrudes. The characters were developed and the author really showed them overcome something very painful. The lack of communication was glaringly obvious. Basically they were both so set on not upsetting the apple cart, the truth fell by the wayside. It felt very real, this need to protect the other person’s feelings and to prove your worth. Wanting to provide what the other person should want instead of what she needed. What Stone did was indeed an awful breach of trust however Nataya wasn’t blameless in the breakdown of the marriage. She stayed silent, then tried to bully him into having a bandaid child and more importantly wanted Stone to fix her while she should have done that on her own. She then run off without telling him what her issues were beside the obvious. If there’s one thing I didn’t like is that while Stone saw a counselor of sorts, Nataya didn’t. I would have liked to have her working on her childhood issues but also have then see someone as a couple. They are lots of things that they didn’t know about each other such as Stone’s feelings of inadequacy. I think the book was also too much of a huis clos. Nataya didn’t seem to have any friends to talk to or at least do things with. She indeed led a lonely existence even without a hobby. As an aside I really disliked Nataya’s mother. Her transfer was irritating. Instead of being a mother, supportive and just listening, she was trying to get a do over of her own divorce. How dare she go an tell Stone that they should get a divorce to make her daughter happy. Did she ask if Nataya wanted that? To Call to scold Nataya about sleeping with her husband, drag her overseas and telling that she’s being pathetic, hoe helpful was that? Being impartial when your child is hurt and trying to set aside your own baggage is hard which is why she should have minded her own business and encouraged Nataya to talk to Stone and a therapist.

5.0⭐️ ~Dynamic~ Ms Arthurs and her dad penned this magnificently crafted story about second chances. Stone and Nataya have been married for eight years. Although they still love each other deeply and still have that explosive sexual chemistry, their marriage is broken. The couple grapple with the question of whether the marriage has been irreparably damaged or whether it can it be fixed? Stone seeks advice from a man name Doc, who happens to be a mechanic. Here is one of my favorite encounters between Doc and Stone:
Stone:”There’s still chemistry. I can feel it. She still—I know her.”
Doc: “What you broke can’t be fixed with glue.” He brushes his fingers over the engine. “You put weight on a wound. There’s a reason athletes who twist their ankles stop competing. They can’t put any pressure on their injury or it’ll get worse.” He shakes his head. “You’re trying to find all the broken pieces and force them back together. And you’re not allowed to do that. It’s not time to get back in the relationship. It can’t support the pressure yet.”

There are so many of these tidbits of wisdom bestowed upon Stone, and Doc’s” lessons” are full of metaphors and symbolisms that may appear to be simplistic; however, they are not. These lessons are powerful, mighty insightful, and effective.

I loved every single part of this book. I fell in love with Stone and I was in awe of Doc. The manner and style in which the book is written evoke myriad emotions. I thoroughly immersed myself in this book, and I couldn’t help rooting for Stone and Nataya.

As a result of the collaboration between Nia Arthurs and her dad, they have created this impressive and noteworthy book. They have definitely raised the bar. I highly recommend it.

This novel is bad but it’s also not bad 😅

2.5 stars!

The big reveal took wwwaaayyy too long. I was bored and confused by the main character’s anger for the first 30% of the book. Once it was revealed everything made more sense.

Why the need to obsessively describe a character’s brown-mocha-chocolate skin. It seemed to come up constantly. I know it was supposed to be adoration but the descriptions felt more like the inner monologue of a cannibal hunting their next meal. 🥴

Won’t be reading anything by this author again.

Honestly, this was one of the best books I’ve ever read in my life. It was so relatable and changed my whole perspective on romance (for the better). Marriage is way more than a beautiful wedding day and happily ever after. It takes work. Fundamentally I knew that, but the way it was demonstrated in this novel was phenomenal. I almost forgot Nataya and Stone weren’t real people. Their chemistry, their honesty, faults, and feelings—everything about this book was so well written it just…astounded me. Every single supporting character as well was great, too. 9 million out of 10, would recommend and read again. ☺️

Earn me

This is a wonderful story about love and comments. Stone and Natalya are in love, but there are issues with each other past up bring that interfere with there present lives. With Nay, it’s her Mother’s advice, past mistakes, loss of trust in her relationship with her husband. And with Stone, he loves his wife, but he needs to express himself more, keep his word and not let the job come between him and his wife, keep no secret. With the help of Doc, all things work out. You will enjoy this book.

I love that he truly did Earn her!!

This love story between Stone and Nataya really is the stuff romance novels are made of. The way they came together in the beginning was true and turned out to be lasting love. The different circumstances of Stone and Nataya's upbringing, caused Stone to doubt he was enough for Nataya! He made some choices during their marriage he did not discuss with her that when it was disclosed albeit accidentally it caused a rift in their marriage that was exacerbated by Nataya' mom. Thankfully she finally came to her senses and returned to her husband. I found myself upset at Nataya' mother's interference in Nataya and Stone's marriage. She tried to dictate to Nataya based on what happened between she and Nataya' dad which was wrong to do. I am so glad Stone was able to reverse his choice and that a family is now an option for them. This was an excellent story that I literally could not put down until I finished reading it. Now I am anxiously waiting for Dean and Jaz's story. Great story MS. Nia Arthur a really great story indeed!

Keeping it real.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It felt like real life with the push and pull of the real side of marriage that no one really preps you for. Not everyone is giddy to start a family, all your plans/ dreams don't always pan out and then you're left to find a new path , hopefully together, atleast that's what you sign on for. I kept turning the page to see how Stone and Nat resolved their issues. I liked the fact that they both took some time to really look at themselves and took responsibility for their actions. Doc was a godsend and I loved the way he and Stone interacted. Thanks for this beautiful story of love and marriage. Great storytelling as always!

I don’t even know what this was. The writing was a big no and so was the characters. 📚

OH MY GOD WHY IS THIS THE WORST BOOK I EVER READ? i kept hoping this would get better but it decidedly did not.

so basically this guy had a vasectomy and didn't tell his wife for five whole years and when she found out she left him as she should. then idk why but instead of going to a therapist or a marriage counsellor or someone similar this dude found a mechanic to talk to who would speak only in car analogies.

he absolutely did not grovel but lured his wife back into his orbit with sex and she like a fool kept going back despite him not really doing anything to make up for what he did. instead the author tried to justify his actions by talking about how the wife was baby crazy and kept pushing for a child when the husband wasn't ready.

when the two of them decided to give it another chance he was late to the first ever date they had planned just like he'd been flaking on his wife for the entirety of their marriage (the wife said she wanted kids only because she was lonely) but in the end it is the wife who ends up going back to him because he was paying he mortgage behind her back and lo and behold just bc he shelled out some money from his big fortune (we have been told multiple times that he is a celebrity tattoo artist and has a lot of money now tho he had started off dirt poor but he worked to became super rich and super successful) and yeah she suddenly didn't have a problem with him lying to her for five whole years.

Do yourself a favour and never read this book please!!
