Fish have fins and gills and tails. All fish swim and most have scales. But not all fish act or look the same. From zapping, stinging, even singing, Freaky, Funky Odd Facts about Fascinating Fish is an adorable picture book with a scientific—and child-friendly—underpinning. With examples of different fish for each description, as well as extensive backmatter explaining the fascinating science behind these variety of fish, this funky book captures the wonder of our ecosystem.
Debra started reading at the age of four and hasn't stopped since. She grew up on a small dairy farm in Wisconsin but now lives in the suburbs of Northern Virginia with her husband, three sons, and two cats.
She is the author of picture books FREAKY, FUNKY FISH and PECULIAR PRIMATES with Running Press Kids, TELL SOMEONE with Albert Whitman, and the upcoming WIND IS A DANCE with Running Press Kids.
Children’s nonfiction books about fish are few and far between. I have a few in my school library, but none that I think kids will pick up and read when they’re browsing. An awesome new book, Freaky, Funky Fish, on other hand, screams ‘PICK ME UP!’ I guarantee that this book will leave kids and adults alike fascinated by fish.
Debra Kempf Shumaker and Claire Powell introduce us to fish of all kinds. Inside this book there are fish that zap, sting and sing, fish that can fly, climb and squirt, and fish that use their special abilities to survive. The simple text throughout the book and the entertaining illustrations makes this a book perfect for preschoolers right through to older children, and everyone will find something that fascinates them. Each fish has a freaky or funky rating (you find this throughout the book and in the ‘Fish Inventory,’ which makes up the endpapers). In the back of the book there is more information about the different types of fish, as well as books and links to videos where you can find out more. This book is a wonderful introduction to a wide variety of fish and the author has included these great suggestions for finding further information.
Freaky, Funky Fish: Odd Facts About Fascinating Fish is one of the most awesome nonfiction books for kids. It is a whole lot of fun to read and it’s packed full of quirky fish facts. The cover is absolutely fin-tastic, with the holographic foil that draws readers towards it like an anglerfish’s glowing lure draws prey. You’re drawn to its shinyness and then you need to know what is inside.
Debra Kempf Schumaker’s text is accessible to a wide range of ages, so it’s great for children to read by themselves or for an adult to read aloud. I love that it is the kind of nonfiction book that less-confident readers can pick up and read, and there are lots of visual cues about the traits of the fish in the illustrations. If a teacher or librarian was reading it to a group, you could just read the story first, then go back to look at the illustrations in more detail. I absolutely love Claire Powell’s illustrations! Claire has given each of the fish a different personality and they have some much character. I have read this book so many times, because I love going back to Claire’s illustrations. So many of her illustrations make me laugh (their expressions are hilarious!) but I think my favourite is the female anglerfish, with the male anglerfish attached to her.
Allen and Unwin should be applauded for the thought that has gone in to the production of this book. The design of the book is stunning, from the holographic foil to the endpapers, and it deserves to be published in hardback. The love that has gone into the writing, illustrating, and design of this book will make it a winner with its target audience.
Freaky, Funky Fish is a must-have book in any school library, and any lover of aquatic creatures should have a copy of their own.
3.5 stars. We have seen some excellent non-fiction books exploring out ocean life recently. The humour in this one is what sets it apart, and might make it a popular choice amongst students. Personally, I liked the more realistic illustration style of some similar books.
The design of this book is so outstanding, creative, and engaging! This is definitely a “knock my socks off” picture book – 5/5 for me. Shumaker created a perfectly minimal rhyming text that puts fish in categories of how they are freaky or funky, and paired this text with informative back matter. This combination invites a wide range of readers. The illustrations are genius! I love the rating system – an opportunity for kids to analyze and evaluate. The images are fun and fascinating and bring some of the back matter into each page. The endpapers look like a scientists logbook - a spreadsheet and a map right off the bat – I was totally wowed before I hit the title page! This is an amazing example of informational nonfiction with so much to pore over and enjoy!
Fische balzen in zuckenden Bewegungen.
Derzeit lebt Powell in London.
Fish have fins and gills and tails. All fish swim and most have scales. But... (page turn) some fish zap and some fish sting (page turn) Did you know that some fish sing?
Entertaining, rhyming text that introduces the idea that fish are a lot more than fins, gills, and tails. The cartoonish illustrations of an ABUNDANCE of fish (with labels naming each one) and humor (each fish is rated on a freakiness scale) will draw your PreK-2nd grade students into listening and back again to read on their own. Great for launching a unit of inquiry/study on different types of fish.
DON'T SKIP THE BACK MATTER. There's a section on each of the categories of fish (e.g., those that zap, sting, sing, etc.) I found this just as fun to read as the main text and imagine our students would too.
PAIR OR CONTRAST WITH - For 1st-3rd, Fish Everywhere by Teckentrup which explores the wide variety of fish and includes realistic illustrations. For PreK-kinder, read aloud Flying Frogs and Walking Fish by Jenkins which reinforces similar themes-that fish are much more interesting than some may think.
I won this book in a drawing and am delighted to have a chance to see it before I share it with my grandchildren. It's chock full of fascinating facts about fish. I already knew a lot about marine life, but I learned even more from this fun book--things like how the hagfish uses slime to protect itself and how the male anglerfish attaches to the female for life and shrinks very small. The main part of the book is great for younger children, and the back part has lots of additional information for curious older kids. The illustrations in the book are also great because they add a bit of humor to text. I highly recommend this book.

What kid wouldn’t be attracted to a book titled FREAKY, FUNKY FISH?!?!? The book itself does not disappoint! It is filled with the funkiest and freakiest of fish. There is also excellent back matter for the curious kid who wants to know more. This is a great example of the best that children’s nonfiction has to offer.
What a fascinating way to showcase some of the strangest fish in the world. It combines a snappy rhyme with a 1 to 5 "freaky rating," entrancing illustrations, onomatopoeia, and amazing facts (like a fish that coats itself in snot?!) The species designations, "field notes," and detailed backmatter beautifully meld with the almost cartoon like illustrations to create a fun STEM book on some pretty odd fish. It is so captivating; you forget your actually learning.
Colorful, whimsical, funny illustrations adorn this book with it's poem about different kinds of freaky fish. Each fish is given a "freakiness rating," and there is even a chart in the front and back of the book with the different ratings. Facts about the fish are at the end of the book.
