plent of sets/combo books, the list was getting WAY too long so trying to shorten it a bit
This covers the time period from Henry VII through Elizabeth I. It examines how the Tudor dynasty came to power, the various kings and queens involved, the political maneuvering (which was intense) and the untimely deaths of some of them.
The ones most familiar will be Henry VIII and Elizabeth I.
It all starts when England was really two different countries and moves on up through the Golden Age of Elizabeth I. Nobel women were used as political pawns in marriages. Religion went from Catholic to Protestant, back to Catholic for a short time then back to Protestant again.
Their reign saw the start of the Church of England, the birth of theaters, Shakespeare, alms houses for the poor and the growth of industry. On the other hand there was smallpox and plague. Keep in mind also that this all happened hundreds of years before the United States came into being.
The book also has a list of references. This was a very fundamental part of the development of England as a country and as a world power. The people involved are fascinating, some of the things done do those out of favor I find disgusting yet it all set the pattern for what came later.
I enjoyed reading this informative book which details the main events and also describes the lives (many short, others not so short) of the main characters from this period of history.
Reading this book not long after reading of the 6 wives of Henry VIII was very useful. On finishing that book I had commented on the large number of prominent people it had introduced me to, many whom I knew very little of. This book certainly rectifies that problem.
The 6 wives are discussed and a further thirteen chapters cover the reigns of a large number of monarchs from a period of just over one hundred years. One of the saddest seems to me to have been the 9 days Queen.
Anyone looking for a quick, concise biography of The Tudors (from Henry VII to Elizabeth I, plus King James I) should look no further than this book. While I know a lot of the details of the Tudors (most correct, some incorrect), I learned many new things as well as corrected other things I thought I knew. The Tudors were definitely an interesting royal dynasty, for better or worse. This book had a few typos but was a great read nonetheless.
This book makes it very easy to follow the lines of succession in what can be a very complicated Tudor history. Devoting a chapter to each monarch is very informative. I think it's brilliant!
Easy to read thumbnail sketch of the Tudor family and the monarchs it produced in English history. Not definitive as history but a good overdue and stepping stone to further study by those that fine the period interesting.
I learned a great deal from this book, especially the history of the family. I found the information on Henry VII far more interesting here than in a documentary I saw. There is good information on both Edward and Mary as well.
