Sustainability for the Rest of Us: Your No-Bullshit, Five-Point Plan for Saving the Planet

”If you’ve any interest in saving our planet…pick up a copy of this book.”

Have you ever wondered whether all your plastic recycling, reusable cup carrying, and hybrid car driving are really making a difference? How about the money you give to charity or the politicians you vote for? Why is it that, after 100 years of the modern environmental movement, things only seem to be getting worse?

In “Sustainability for the Rest of Us,” John Pabon looks back on his nearly two decades in the business of saving our Earth to reveal why much of what we've been doing isn't having a big impact at all. This hilarious, no-holds-barred, unorthodox book will reveal to readers - regardless of their experience - what we really need to change, why we need to change, and how to make it happen. Consider this sustainability made simple.

Readers will also find out why:

-Being heartless can actually make a difference.
-We should look to China for climate leadership.
-You shouldn't trust NGOs with your money.
-Greenies are ruining everything.
-Condoms might just save humanity.

Described as "one of the best sustainability resources available to date" and a "step-by-step guide to sensibly influencing change," the biggest question is whether you're ready to cut the BS and get to work?

Named one of the world’s top 35 voices on sustainability, John Pabon has spent two decades in the business of saving our Earth. After leaving his role at the United Nations, John travelled the globe studying the impacts of sustainability first-hand in factories, on fields, and in Fortune 500s.

An expert in sustainability, ESG, and strategic communications, his mission is to move sustainability from theory to practical strategies that help people and businesses confidentially make real impact. To get there, he shares his message through books, consulting to businesses, and keynote speaking to audiences around the world.

John’s global career has taken him from Los Angeles to New York, Shanghai to Seoul to Melbourne. He’s had the privilege of working with the United Nations, McKinsey, A.C. Nielsen, and as a consultant with BSR, the world’s largest sustainability-focused business network. A decade of experience living and working in Asia inspired him to found Fulcrum Strategic Advisors with a mission to help companies, governments, and individuals capitalize on the benefits sustainability offers.

Considered Australia’s leading independent authority on greenwashing, he is a regular contributor to major publications and speaks to an array of global audiences on issues of sustainability, geopolitics, communications, and societal change. John is the Chair of The Conference Board’s Asia and ANZ Sustainability Leaders Councils, advises the United Nations, and serves on the board of advisors to the Anti-Greenwash Charter. He is the author of “Sustainability for the Rest of Us: Your No-Bullshit, Five-Point Plan for Saving the Planet” (2020), “The Great Greenwashing: How Brands, Governments, and Influencers are Lying to You” (2023), and “Strategic Sustainability: A Pragmatic Blueprint for Responsible Business” (2026).

Most of as human, regardless of where we live in the world, we care about our planet and want to make sure that it's a habitable place for our children. We think just because we recycle our trash at home; we are doing our part. But he goes way beyond what is needed and which industries contribute most to the bottom line of our eventual fate if we continue our current way of life on this planet (no, it's not just oil companies). The best part about this whole book is that the author is very pragmatic in his approach. He isn't your typical "greenie." He is fully aware that as humans, we have adapted to a particular way of life, and it will be very impractical to stop our habits. Instead of telling us to join the "greenies" he has a pragmatic solution.

The author's experience in the United Nations and as an expert in this field brings some sobering thoughts to all of us. He goes to explain all of the flaws that are currently within the systems (are you really surprised?) and gives us an insight as an insider that has prevented us from significant change and how we can overcome this one person at a time. Pabon provides us with a road map for each voice to take measurable actions to be heard and make a significant shift in policy and change.

If you're like a lot of people out there thinking to yourself "well I am sure there are a lot of intelligent people working on this issue and how am I going to change this world by myself?" well, this book is for you, which let's face it, it is for the majority of us.

If you're a history buff and want to know how things have played out in history, he does a fantastic job explaining the chain of events. The best part of it all is that I found myself laughing out loud throughout this book. The author makes reading about a hard thought subject very enjoyable.

This is a must-read book for all of us. I highly recommend this book. Your time will be well spent!
