Bookbinding Mystery #2

A Midsummer Night's Scheme

Rate this book
All the world's a stage, but it may be curtains for bookbinder Quinn Caine’s brother if she can't bring the lights down on an actor's killer, in this mystery perfect for fans of Jenn McKinlay and Kate Carlisle.

Just when everything is returning to the calm that Quinn Caine and her sidekicks, Ruff Barker Ginsburg and Sister Daria, are used to in their beloved town of Vienna, a Broadway star crash-lands into their peace and quiet. Former ‘player’, Chad Frivole, is Vienna’s prodigal son—the once notorious lothario has returned a Broadway star, ready to make a different kind of mark on his hometown.

Not everyone is celebrating the Tony-award-winner’s return. Chad’s a triple threat—with a cast of characters lining up to seek their revenge on him. So, when he turns up dead in his car, trapped with a sack full of snakes, Quinn can’t say she’s surprised—but promises handsome detective Aiden Harrington that she’s staying out of this local mystery.

That is, until someone starts threatening her brother’s life. It’s true, Sebastian ‘Bash’ Caine used to be a womanizer, just like Chad. And the killer doesn’t seem to care that he’s not that man anymore. Bash Caine is in the killer’s sights, and unless Quinn and her crew can find the killer in time, whoever it is will drag her brother into his final act on this mortal coil.

Quinn Caine was with friends in the pet store when Chad, newly arrived from Hollywood back to his home town, entered. It was when he left, climbing into his sports car, that things went horribly wrong. Unable to unlock the car doors, he was stuck inside and when the fire brigade released him, he was soon deceased. Quinn's boyfriend Aiden, local detective, was immediately onto the murder case, but when Quinn's brother Bash, and his fiance Rachel were threatened, almost killed, the race was on. Would they catch this bizarre killer before anyone else died?

A Midsummer Night's Scheme is #2 in the Bookbinding Mystery series by Harper Kincaid and I quite enjoyed it. It was a bit silly around the middle of the book, with me rolling my eyes, but as I headed toward the finish, it was much better. I liked the characters, especially Quinn, Aiden and Sister Daria, and will check out #3 when it's released. Recommended for cosy fans.

With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

This is a tricky review to write because the book was basically okay but it just seemed to try too hard! The initial murder was so silly that I nearly stopped reading altogether, but I soldiered on and things did get better.

Anyway, the characters were nice, there was a cute cat and dog relationship, lots of action, and some good humorous lines. The ending was a bit of a cliff hanger which may well tempt me into reading the next book. No more snakes though please.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.

First, I loved, loved, LOVED the first book in this series and had such high hopes for this one. I was disappointed when the author, Harper Kincaid, announced last week on her Facebook page that the publishing company has opted NOT to continue the series.
That being said, this book was different from the first in that it's being told from both Quinn and Daria's point-of-views. I kinda like this because it helps us learn more about Daria.
It also feels like the mystery took the backseat to the Caine family story. I did like to see Quinn and Aiden's relationship progress as well as Bash and Rachel's relationship. But with Bash and Rachel's engagement "drama", I lost all respect for Quinn's parents and their dramatics outright pissed me off. The "apology" wasn't enough for me; the anti-semitic attitude was kinda extreme.
Overall, it was a good book but not as good as the first one. The killer was a surprise and so was the ending. The worst part was this book ended on a major cliffhanger. And if Harper Kincaid's Facebook post is true, then will never know the ending.

I think this might be a new favorite series! I have a lot of those if you follow any of my reviews. But this one has engaging characters and a mystery that kept me guessing until the very end.

Normally, I'm a stickler for starting a series at the beginning. However, this is only the second book, and I felt like there was enough backstory that I didn't feel lost in any of the personal relationships that occurred in the series. The story is also told from two perspectives, Quinn and her cousin Daria. I had read books before that had multiple points of view, and they didn't seem to work, or at least I was always confused when the voices changed. That is not true with this book. It was obvious to me when it was Quinn or Daria because they are very different. Daria is a novice nun; however, she is tested by Lucas and their attraction to one another. Will she go through with her vows, or was she just running away thinking that the convent was a safe place? There is a bit of a cliffhanger at the end regarding Daria.

Quinn had a rough start in the first book; however, it has led to her relationship with Aidan, the local police detective. I really enjoyed watching their relationship and the respect that they have for one another. Quinn is inquisitive but manages to end up in the thick of things, even when she isn't trying.

I also enjoyed the dog training that Daria and the nuns do at the convent. While that is just a small notation in the book, I thought it was a nice twist for that to be an area that they help in their community.

If you are squeamish about snakes, spiders, and other creepy crawlies, just be forewarned that there are some scattered throughout the book. It added an interesting twist to how people were murdered, especially once the killer is revealed and the truth comes to light.

I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series, but I will probably have to wait a while!

We give this book 5 paws up.

This is the second book in the Bookbinding Mystery series and was pretty easy to follow even though I haven't read the first book.

I received both an e-Arc and audio Arc of the book and I ended up listening to the book more than reading it. The narration by Renee Dorian was pleasant and livened up the book.

Overall, it was a decent cozy mystery with the first victim getting killed in a disturbing and crazy manner. What a horrible way to die!!

I was a bit put off by a particular scene involving Quinn's parents, her brother Sebastian and his fiancee which included a conversation about Sebastian and his fiancées religious beliefs. Not every concern or viewpoint expressed (political or religious) is necessarily an 'anti-feeling' or 'phobia'.

My thanks to NetGalley, the publishers Crooked Lane Books and Dreamscape Media and the author for both the e-Arc and audio Arc of the book.

A Midsummer Night’s Scheme is the second book in the “Bookbinding Mystery” series. A hometown lothario returns as a big star, but unfortunately for him, many of the women he used and left behind are still around, and perhaps one of them decided that his womanizing days are over and make certain he gets the message with a bag full of poisonous snakes.

I don’t like snakes or lotharios, and frankly, the way the victim dies creeped me out! It’s probably one of the worst and most original forms of murder I have come across in a cozy. It definitely made the book unforgettable. The characters from book one have all returned, along with Quinn’s lovable fur babies (yes, I called them fur babies, and if people don’t like the term, I really don’t care!). The story allows us to learn more about Quinn and her family while leaving room for growth and world-building in future books. These characters and suspects all have dominant personalities and traits that make them come alive in the reader’s mind. I am especially fond of Quinn’s brother, Bash. The evidence is everywhere and is overwhelming. The finger of guilt points in a specific direction that is just a little too easy, and some readers may find that they need to go back and redirect their thinking.

Tracking down a killer who uses snakes as a weapon isn’t easy; the person is heartless and has no fear of killing more people if needed. The victim was considered a bad guy, but he didn’t deserve to die. Eventually, Quinn finds the lothario killer, but not without getting herself almost killed. This made for an exciting read that had me cringing at times and smiling at others. I can’t wait for the next book, but please, no more snakes!

This cozy had some good features but ultimately for me the negatives outweighed the positives. I am probably not the right audience. It was a fun setting, a small town paper & print shop with the owners' daughter Quinn doing custom bookbinding. Her family -- parents and cousins and brother -- are a large part of the ensemble cast.

Someone is viciously targeting men who were perceived to have treated women badly in their high school and college days. The first victim, a former classmate of Quinn's who met some success as an actor, dies in a horrific setup of poisonous snakes in his car. Then Quinn's brother is targeted with deadly spiders. Definite trigger warnings for anyone with snake and spider issues. Quinn's boyfriend, a homicide cop, is the investigator but Quinn pushes herself in with the help of her cousin, a nun in training.

Pretty cutesy at times with pets named Ruff Barker Ginsburg and Cindy Clawford. The nun character, Sister Daria formerly known as Eliza, Quinn's cousin, was a troublesome character for me. It certainly feels like she is totally unsuited to a cloistered religious life and I'm not sure what purpose she serves here. An awful lot of the plot leads back to high school which I don't find that interesting, but again, perhaps a different audience would appreciate that more.

But the big negative for me was the sudden and jarring cliffhanger ending. Those one line endings that blatantly shout -- Read the Next Book! -- always leave me feeling manipulated. If you like that surprise ending element, this might be just the read for you. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I'm a little baffled by this. I know it's been a while since I read the first book in this series, but this one doesn't seem to be at all like what I remembered. The tone seems very different and the writing seems careless and the story rushed. Information is repeated unnecessarily, the point of view toggles confusingly between Quinn and her cousin, and the whole denouement with the killer is anticlimactic. Also, I'm really confused about why the nuns have a dog shelter and don't seem to spay or neuter the dogs or adopt them out, and hold training classes for emotional support pets just so people can travel with their pets? As a dog owner, I am deeply offended by all of these things. Many things in this book just didn't make sense to me, and I felt like this was written by a different author from the first book.

It’s been awhile since I’ve been to Vienna so it’s nice to visit it (although it sure has changed a lot!). The story started off slow but picked up when all the snakes were thrown; then I was intrigued and hooked. I enjoyed this one more than the first but still find the convent and Sister Daria to be an odd addition. She doesn’t seem suited to a cloistered life and the levity associated with the calling feels a little like a slap in the face for those that are called to it. I understand everyone has their own personalities and that nuns aren’t serious all the time but she barely even seems to be there. The mystery kept me guessing until the end and I had fun following the clues along with Quinn and Sister Daria.

I love Crooked Lane books, and this easy-going, fun romp was no exception. I enjoyed the premise, the characters, and the overall jaunty feel of the story. On the downside, it could become a bit slapstick at times, which isn't my particular cup of tea. I didn't appreciate the reference made by Aiden regarding a snakeskin belt but do appreciate the fact that on both creepy-crawly occasions animal control was called in and (hopefully) no harm befell either spiders or snakes. I also would have preferred more cats, but that's just me.

I love Lucas, an interesting character and one to watch. I also love Elizabeth (Sister Daria Shmaria!). Anyone with dark Viking-inspired, rugged good looks and bad-boy charm who called me Tentadora would have me hanging up my wimple and throwing caution to the wind. Within reason, of course... but then, to be honest, the idea of becoming a nun would never even cross my mind.

I never read the first installment, but think I might track it down. I wasn't really planning on reading the next one, right up until the last page, which had me furiously searching for the end of the book, thinking it must be a trick - who ends on such a note??? Well played, Ms. Kincaid. It seems I shall keep an eye out for part three after all.

three and a half stars rounded up to 4, because of the Viking.

Thanks NetGalley and Crooked Lane for my ARC.

Wonderful title. Nice diversity.. I like the family dynamics. Great look into the personal lives. I really enjoyed this book. You don't need to read the other books, but I bet they would add to the story.. The title is a nice turn of phrase and fitting for the story. I highly recommend this book.

The mystery was OK. But I really did not appreciate the author's sense of humor at the expense of Christianity. Some of it was down-right offensive.

The star of the show, bookbinder Quinn Caine, who was teaching abroad has moved back to her sleepy hometown of Vienna, Virginia. She now spends her days working in Prose & Scones, her family's bookshop, along with her dog, trusty German Shepherd 'Ruff Barker' Ginsburg (aka RBG).

I thought this was an excellent, really solid continuation of the series. I enjoyed reading about the quaint small town of Vienna with its strong community vibe. Harper Kincaid has created a delightful set of characters and apart from Quinn herself who I find to be intelligent and smart, though not always very wise, I also like her cousin, Sister Daria for her spirit and vivacity.

The writing was fast paced, and the mystery itself was very well executed, with abundant red herrings and twists to sustain my interest. All in all, a brilliant instalment with a surprise ending.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Crooked Lane Books via NetGalley and this review is my unbiased opinion.

This was such a fun read! This is the second book in the Bookbinding Mystery series. Although I hadn’t read book one, it didn’t seem to matter much and I was able to jump right in. This book was unique in that there were two main characters, and you follow both throughout the book. It was also interesting, as I’ve never read a book where one of the main characters is a nun in training, so that was a fun and different element.

There were quite a few surprises sprinkled throughout the book, which definitely kept the story interesting. The storyline and characters were intriguing and the mystery kept me guessing until the end. I was not expecting the story to end on such an abrupt cliffhanger.

What I liked:

🔸That there were two main characters
🔸The twists and turns in the plot
🔸Kept me guessing

Thank you NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for accepting my request to read and review A Midsummer Night's Scheme.

Not my cup of tea. Slithered right through town in the usual and customary fashion: local swears she will not get involved with police matters. Pardon me -- stretch and big yawn.

The synopsis says it all. Sadly, some cozy mysteries are cheesy and this is one. Tough going.

There is a market. Just not me. I like smart.

Quinn and Sister Daria are back in this new cozy mystery. After a womanizer returns to town, he soon ends up murdered. Soon after, Quinn’s brother is the next target. Quinn and her cousin must find the culprit to save her family.

I hadn’t read the previous book, but I was able to follow along fine! I wasn’t expecting the dual character focus, and I felt some of the story lines odd. However, a solid cozy mystery that ends with an intriguing cliffhanger!

Thank you to the author, narrator, publisher and Net Galley for providing a free e-audio version of this title in exchange for my review.

I love cozy mysteries and was excited to start this one out. This is book 2 in a series, and I have not read book 1, but felt like I missed nothing. The recap at the beginning of this one filled in a lot of gaps.

This is a typical cozy with cutesy names and small towns, large groups of friends and big families. But it was a bit gruesome and included details of murders, phobias, religion and casual references to panic attacks that are not usually found in true cozy mysteries. I wonder if this is a cozy for a younger reading group. Also felt like the author had a checklist for buzz words or popular topics for books and tossed in references to complete the list.

Though it wasn't a bad story, I really didn't care for it. I couldn't connect with any of the characters or keep the details and names clear. I don't think I will continue this series or look for others by the author. I cannot think of anyone I would recommend the book to.

2 stars for 'it was ok'

Publication March 21, 2023 Bookbinding Mystery #2

Tense. Full of action and, yikes, I need to let you know that if you have any phobias of snakes and spiders, even the imaginary idea of being locked in a small, enclosed space with them, shiver, you might want to give this installment of the series a miss. It's an excellent mystery with great characters that I instantly warmed up to but, well, don't say I didn't warn you.

The plot evolves around the return of one-time bad boy, now Broadway star, Chad Frivole. He's in town to announce plans to create a drama/music based production company/playhouse. While most find it a wonderful idea, not everyone does. It seems Chad left behind more than a few broken hearts when he left town for the lights of Broadway. Now he's dead and, shiver, what a marvelously evil murder weapon. Main character Quinn and her cousin, nun-in-training Daria, aka Lizzie/Elizabeth, are there with their dogs when it happens. Despite this, they have no plans to become involved in the investigation. Then, uh-oh, Quinn's brother Bash receives threats and the wannabe killer seems to know his phobia well. Seems he shattered a few female hearts, too, when younger. Family ties are strong, even pulling Daria away from the church, so let the investigation begin. There are plentiful suspects for Chad's death, including a trio of now women who showed open disdain and even hatred toward him when he made his big announcement.

We get two viewpoints throughout, from Quinn's eyes to Daria's now more sheltered vantage point. This makes for an interesting read and offers more angles to ponder. I liked both characters, not to mention their friends. All were well-rounded and could be people we know. Quinn's relationship with detective Aiden, who saved her life in a previous book, it seems, which I haven't read, is still young but seems solid, which is good since she's had a crush on him since, well, forever. Daria has been burnt, however, so she's less open in that sense. Being a nun-in-training, however, does not make one immune to romantic attraction, making for an interesting situation....or two? Oh, that one is going to be interesting to follow into the next book.

In the meantime, with her brother's life on the line, Quinn has little time to devote to her cousin's situation. Who wanted Chad dead? Who also wants Bash dead? Is it the same person? Where did they get that, oh, so specialized weapon? Will Quinn and Daria/Elizabeth be able to figure it all out in time....with Aiden's assistance or, okay, by helping Aiden? Nope, not sharing any more teasers. Unless you're a snake/spider phobic, and gotta admit, the murder scene gave me the heebie-jeebies, you're going to love this one.

Thanks #NetGalley and #CrookedLaneBooks for both the shivers and intro to the world of Quinn and Daria.

I love cozy mysteries and read a lot of them and this one was one of my favorite to date. I love the little town of Vienna, Virginia and all the cozy settings, most of all Quinn’s family book store. A Midsummer Nights Dream had all the pieces for a cozy mystery and managed to have one of the least likely suspects be the murder.

However, is also had a few unexpected parts too. This is my first mystery novel where there is two lead characters who are both equal the main and work together to save the town. Quinn and Sister Daria/Liz go back and forth each chapter to tell the story from their perspective. There is no overlap in the story you just get from both of them. Another difference is one of the main characters being a nun in training.

I would recommend this book to all my cozy mystery loving friends!! Such a great mystery it was. I cannot wait for the next book in the Bookbinding Mystery Series!

I devoured this book in one day, I couldn't put it down. There's no better feeling than sitting down with a book and reading until the last page - it also helped that my family was out and about and couldn't bother me :) This book can be read as a standalone. Although I do recommend you read them all.

This quote from the book pretty much sums it up......."old enough to realize that hometowns, just like people, are complicated; simultaneously wonderful and terrible and never quite as predictable as they'd like you to believe."

Quinn and her cousin, Elizabeth aka Sister Daria (nun in training), witness the accident that killed Chad, a cruel teenager turned Broadway star. There's no shortage of suspects but when Quinn's brother Bash is targeted with deadly spiders, they know it can't be a coincidence. But that's not it, Sister Daria is having some doubts about being a nun and it gets even more complicated when Lucas starts showing up. Rachael and Bash get engaged but the happy occasion turns to a family argument where Quinn and Bash become very disappointed in their parents.

I can't wait to see what Sister Daria or should I say Elizabeth, decides for her future. Quinn and Aiden also have a decision to make.

This is the second in this new charming cozy series. I enjoy the setting, the characters and the sleuth. Thank you to Net Galley and to the publisher for the opportunity. My review opinion is my own

This next in series has a murder of a different type that has our protagnist and friends sleuthing in dangerous territory, A famous actor who is a neferious type that everyone dislikes comes to town and is murdered . Our protagnist and friends have their family to protect as main suspects. As the red herrings and clues abound the murder becomes more complicated and solving it may be dangerous for them all.

I really enjoy this series with great charcters, well crafted sleuth and a pleasing setting. Well done to the author I look forward to the next in series.

I was looking forward to this second book in the series. I read a lot of cozy mysteries and the world Kincaid creates definitely has unique characters and situations. This book also shifts perspectives/main characters from the first, so you get to know Daria more in this book. Along with the main mystery, the book has romantic tension and family drama, so I recommend reading the first book of the series to start so you don't get lost.

“A Midsummer Night's Scheme“ by Harper Kincaid the 2nd instalment in the "Bookbinding Mystery" series. All the world's a stage, but it may be curtains for bookbinder Quinn Caine’s brother if she can't bring the lights down on an actor's killer,

I found myself struggling at first but about the 30% mark, I was fully engrossed in the story and really enjoying it. It was entertaining, and I really loved the relationship Quinn had with her cousin Sister Daria and RBG her German Shepard.

It was entertaining, full of twists and turns as well as a few surprises!

I recommend this series to all my cozy loving friends.

I really enjoyed this second book in the Bookbinding Mystery series. I loved the way the author interwove Shakespearean literature with the story line. I also liked how she put the MC's brother in danger to up the stakes in finding the killer. And, it has a lot of recipes in the end of the book! I absolutely loved this story! The mystery was very well done with an unusual cause of death and the laugh out loud lines, moments and banter thrilled me. This book was hilarious which always turns a book in to a story I love. Great, great read! I hope book 3 releases much sooner than this one did. This is a fantastic series even with the delay between books 1 and 2. This will very likely be my favorite cozy read for this year!
