It might have taken me a while to get to this one, but I’m glad that I did pick it up as I quite enjoyed it. I really liked the expansion of the world that we got here, not only in the physical aspect, but also in learning more about the history and the powers of the gods and demigods. I thought there was a lot going on in the world here, but then it’s a massive series, so there’s plenty of time to hopefully do everything justice.

I also really liked the characters and character growth. I don’t know if the different arcs of the series will follow the same set of characters, but I find myself hoping that they do, as there are several here who interest me, and sometimes that can be a rarity in itself.

There were some good battle scenes here and I think the intensity was quite well managed throughout these, with the idea that your “heroes” are going to come out the other side but there always being that possibility that they won’t. And, as with any good scenes like this, it’s often more a case of how they come through – and again, I thought the writing served me well here.

The Dragon’s Blade is the second book in The Magelands Eternal Siege series. This is a true series, you need to read these books in order. The characters really are on a journey. Not only the story arc but also their own personal journeys, they are constantly evolving and developing.

If you’ve read Christopher Mitchell’s other books you’ll know just how great a story teller he is. There are so many threads weaving a picture and you have no idea what the final tapestry will look like. I can’t wait to see where we go from here.

I received an advanced copy of this book from the author and am leaving a voluntary honest review.

Listened to this as i drove, i must say it made my journeys shorter. So many characters but they all blend in together. Can't wait to listen to book 3. That ending, proper cliffhanger, is the city going to be destroyed? Is the god queen going to intervene, what about the dragon? I can't wait.

The book picks up just where we left off. Amidst chaos, betrayal, pain and the unknown.
The handsome champion that she had loved was being portrayed as the murderer of Princess Khora, and Lord Kano as the heroic warrior who had apprehended and executed Corthie for the horrific crime.

Again, I was addicted to Maddie and all of her interactions. She’s just such a fun character. She strikes me as very gen-z and I love her attitude.

Maddie yelped and lifted the hoop. 'Is this right; am I doing it right? Where does this bit go? Oops, did I just poke you in the eye?
Lower your head a bit..
...right. You know, I've
never noticed how big your ears are; they're enormous.'
The dragon groaned. 'I knew this was a mistake.'

'Is there any. thing you're good at?'
—— closed her eyes. 'Ask the three guys
I knocked out in the common room.
Maddie laughed. 'You know, I think I'm starting to like you

(I had to black out the name otherwise spoilerssss).

This was a strong second instalment with a larger scope of the world with new revelations of history, characters and motives.
I loved the politics behind the uprisings and the reasoning of the characters looking on. It was enlightening and interesting seeing changing values, perceptions and attitudes from an array of characters from different walks of life.

Each character was strong and individual, all distinguishable in their own way. Also, there was romance but it was the perfect kind. Not over-bearing, spicy or taking away from the story. If anything, it subtly adds to the characters and plots.
I highly recommend to fantasy lovers!

Book 2 of the Magelands Eternal Siege series! More non stop action, plotting, scheming and more fun than should be possible. Never stops moving. Love these characters. This is such great stuff.

My lines are blurred on where this book begins and the last one ends, but I do know this is where things went from good to great. Already attached to several of the characters and having a better understanding of the world, I was able to get really lost (in a good way) in the scheming, plotting, fight for survival, and politics.

While I don't remember exactly where the last book ends, I do know it was on a cliff hanger and things are starting to boil over in the city. I grew much more invested in Aila and Corthie by this point (the cliff hanger revolved around them) and also just super excited to see how/if they would survive everything that transpired.

A character that we were briefly introduced to in the previous book - Daniel's bride Emily (Aurelian now) - really shines through in this book. I had a feeling I liked her in the last one, but now she overshadowed everyone else and is my absolute favorite. So much about her is spoiler though, so I'll just say she is strong and smart and brave all in one. Love her!

The action and plot momentum really picked up the pace in this book - maybe because I understand the world better - and the book flew by. The narration continued to be great, Shaun Grindell delivered great voices and accents, also propelling the book along.

Setup in the first book pays off in this sequel which picks up from the cliffhanger ending of the first . A page turner indeed !

Another great read. A brief synopsis:

Poor Emily. If that girl didn't have bad luck, she'd have (almost) no luck at all. Sufficient to say it largely involves Daniel's mother and the despicable Lord Chamberlain.

All of the main characters are scattered, not only from each other but from their previous locations. I get a sense that they will unite at some point in the future.

We meet Prince Montieth and his two lovely daughters as Aila seeks asylum from Marcus and his obsession with her. Aila obtains an object of great power; its use to be determined.

Both Aila and Maddie hear the rumor that Corthie may still be alive. Corthie escapes from the prison camp where he had been sent and encounters trouble aplenty.

The war with the greenhides continues and they have a significant role in several places. The God-Queen makes an appearance. She's ready to reconcile with her husband with interesting results.

The demigods' history becomes more clear. Aila learns that many of her beliefs have been lies.

Dragons!

I'm eagerly looking forward the the next book to see how this all shakes out.

Corthie, falsely accused of killing a demigod, has been hidden away in Tarstation until it kills him or he makes a break for it. Aila has gone into hiding to avoid Marcus who is trying to marry/capture her. Blackrose has quit eating because she believes that Corthie died and his plan failed with him. Maddie has been reassigned to the frontline. And Emily, Daniel's new wife, has to win over her new family despite an old family secret that threatens to destroy both families.

The action from the previous book has not stopped. The gods are returning and using the humans as pawns in their battles. Those few who stand with the humans are powerless to stop them. The humans have had enough of the gods, but are divided by tribal rivalries until an ancient myth resurfaces - from the original human royal line, an Aurelian prince will arise to rescue his people. There are a few hopeful twists in the story, but most are still secrets by the end of the book. But I'm completely hooked and can't wait to find out what happens next.

I received a free ARC from the author and have reviewed it willingly.

I loved this book start to finish. Book 1 was definitely just to set up everything happening in the series, because the slow parts weren't in this one at all. Everything moved at a really good pace, and I enjoyed every characters plots - though my favorite ones are Maddie and Blackrose, and Daniel and Emily's. Daniel and Emily's specifically is just such a great romance, and I'm excited to see them thrown into the fray with the rest of the characters since before I wasn't sure why their plot was in the story.

But dang, so much happened in this book! Really good character growth for all of the characters, it's so organic and realistic. I thoroughly enjoy all the main, and side characters, and this world. The action is well written, and the intensity stays really high in this one and it's such a good read. I'm hooked on this series, I've already bought the rest of it and that says something, as I tend to not do that and only buy books after reading one installment to see if I want to continue. But with this series, I just want to keep on reading to see what happens next.

So yeah, what else can I say? This is becoming one of my new fav fantasy series. Pick it up if you're into the genre!

What can I say about this second instalment, other than I really REALLY loved it! The first book did a great job of setting the scene and raising the bets but this one just upped the game a 100%. The characters are great. The world building is great – not to mention very different in the way it all takes place within one grand city under siege, so to speak. I love how Maddie’s story is unfolding. The plot twists are really good and of course the best laid plans never work which makes for an exciting pace and unpredictable story. And then of course things suddenly happen so fast that the pages just flip themselves. I will not give away anything as you need to discover all this for yourself, but the dragon Buckler’s story absolutely threw me. Wow who’d have thought? Like book 1, this one also finishes on a bit of a cliff hanger but it’s a good one and I seriously cannot wait to read book 3! Finally I just wanted to mention that I was super fortunate to receive a free ARC of this book and that I am leaving a review because I want to because it definitely deserves one to help other fantasy readers to discover it!

To my delight, this second book focuses heavily on the most interesting relationship from book 1--the relationship between Maddie and her dragon, Blackrose. I love a good dragon rider story, and this is no exception. It does thorough credit to everything that makes dragon stories so special--the theme of two different intelligent beings, with minds completely unlike and coming from totally different species and backgrounds, coming together in a bond that transcends everything else. Blackrose is no friendly magic dragon: she is frightening, often dangerous. (I'll also shout out my favorite character, Maddie's mentor/mother-figure, and her own unique relationship with the dragon). I was so invested in the relationship between the human and the dragon that this book sped by. Daniel's relationship with Emily was also extremely sweet. Although this is a sprawling fantasy world, the focus on characters and their relationships makes it feel grounded and digestible, even as the story continues to draw the reader in.

Corthie, the champion, is enslaved and sent away thus unable to protect the city from the greenhides, Alia, the demi-god, is in hiding whilst Marcus has now taken over the leadership of Tara after killing the Princess. However even though he is now all powerful he is not satisfied as he still lusts after Aila who he has wanted for ages and he won't stop till he finds her. He makes one mistake after another in his rash decisions based on his craziness, leaving the city of Tara unprotected as he sends the blades into other cities in search of both Corthie and Aila, and summer comes with a vengeance before its time and with it the hordes of greenhides. Meantime Blackrose, the old lady, is betrayed yet again and now only Maddie her trusted rider can save her and maybe save Tara too, but will Maddie be enough? This book is so full of surprises and not nice ones at that either, full of twists and turns which kept me on edge and reading till the last line, betrayals galore, and I cannot wait to start book 3 in this very compelling series.

This is the second book in the Magelands Eternal Siege series and it most certainly did not disappoint!

Just like the first book, the story was bursting at the seams with exciting battle scenes, endless action and a dark and dangerous plot.

Once again the story was told from the POV of four characters - with Corthie, Maddie and Aila returning from the first adventure - alongside Emily; the New Lady Aurelian. Admittedly, her chapters weren't the most exciting to read but they did help break up the action and provide a bit of a breather.

The Dragon's Blade was a lot more grisly and gory than The Mortal Blade but it was also a heck of a lot more exhilarating a read! The final third of the book especially actually made my heart literally race and I could not put it down - it honestly felt like I was watching a movie rather than reading a book.

I seriously cannot recommend this series enough for those who, like me, love an enthralling epic fantasy story that doesn't end up veering off into a teen romantic drama!

In a year where we are all isolating ourselves from an invisible enemy it is oddly comforting to read fantasy fiction whereby a city must defend itself from a very visible enemy. While some take advantage of the situation to their own selfish agenda others strive to help the masses even when they themselves are falsely persecuted.

Book two expands both the area of The City and it’s inhabitants brilliantly. I was so engaged in the family tree of gods, god-children and demigods that I found myself drawing a family tree detailing powers, birth and death dates. Beware however, all may not be as it seems!

If it’s cliffhangers, escapism, unlikely friendships, action, humour and solid plot-lines you’re after then look no further than this.

Kind of painful to read as the protagonist have no real plans, things just happen. The writing style did not improve, it got even worse (ie one chapter part of characters find a nameless prison, in the very next chapter other characters mentioned someone who was supposedly killed - are you kidding me, this is insult, not a hint).
Also, the author suffers from strong woman syndrome - a woman who's apparently intelligent, can stand for herself against people who have more power (not physical), really doesn't need to be made stronger by being able to beat 3 male soldiers (!!!!!!) unconscious, especially when she comes from rich society.

This series has me drooling while awaiting the next installation. I am an Honest ARC reviewer,The whole City has been subjugated by the God-Queens favorite. And he will stop at nothing to get what he wants , Little does he know his plans set in motion the cities demise , Who will survive, Where will the Dragons fly ? You MUST read this series if you are a fantasy lover, very little romance ( just enough to keep the story going) , Action galore , Magic, Dragon's--DRAGON'S- Godlings and battles. Everything a reader needs.

This book follows the lives of many characters in the same timeline. This is an awesome story with great world building. This is an epic adventure book with highs and the lows of these characters as Gods and Demi-Gods use these people like pawns. Through all of this the characters all try to have a good moral code even as alot of the situations are not those to control. This is a story I feel is up there with The Lord of the Rings in great storytelling. I highly recommed this book.
I was given a free copy of this book at my request and this is my honest review.

I picture this hardcover to weigh 30 pounds. With that said, I have never taken so long to read a book and not regretted it a single ounce.

I absolutely LOVE all of the different characters in this book and how their stories are weaving together. This is an EPIC fantasy and I would recommend this series only to those who can devote some serious time. It is 100% worth it.

I was thinking about this book and if I could pick any favorites and I just cannot. I love all of the characters each in their own way. I can't wait to see where this goes!

I am really enjoying this series it is full of non stop action and the characters are all nuanced individuals, each on physical journeys as well as having a character arc of change. The gods and de,I gods are as despicable as ever (well, most of them), the scheming and danger increase for everyone as Marcus rule over the city leaves a lot to be desired. We learn a bit more about the worlds and the gods reason for being at the City, but there are still a great many threads that are being slowly woven into the picture. Looking forward to buying and reading book 3.

Loved this book! I thought it was even better than the first one. I was a little surprised at the beginning because instead of having Daniel's viewpoint, we got Emily's instead. But it didn't hurt the story in any way and only made me love the characters more. I also felt like some of the characters that had slower parts in the first book had more exciting roles in the second. As well as people like Corthie had a little bit of slower role in this one, but no less important. I'm excited to see what the next one is about!

I absolutely loved this book. I really couldn't put it down and was so involved in the characters. They have built up from the previous book in this series and have evolved tremendously. Each of the main characters are moving forward and and you're constantly trying to guess where we're going and how this might end. Nothing is obvious which is delightful ! An enchanting mix of fantasy and romance.

This story line continues to be an epic fantasy!! I absolutely loved The Dragon’s Blade. So well written and the flow of the story line was flawless! I loved how the first cast of characters from the first story were back and ready for action. It had a bit of everything I could ever want, dragons, demi-gods, magic, action, suspense, drama and so much more. I was gifted an advanced copy by the author, thank you so much for letting me read your story. This is my honest and voluntary review.

The events and threads of this story were well-written and continued to come together from the first book. It was difficult to put the book down since you knew the characters from the previous book and because this work is action packed. The characters still had little-to-no development which made them and their dialogue boring, though the character backgrounds are varied. There were also an unreasonable amount of typos throughout the work. Overall I recommend this book.

Christopher Mitchell delivers again!

This series is proving to have it all - action, adventure, a superb mix of fantasy and magic and a unique system at that. The characters are well developed and continue to evolve throughout each installment, this one included. As an avid lover of fantasy epics, this series has me hooked.

Shocking!

I am continuously surprised by the twists and turns in this series. I didn’t like some of those surprises but, then, who ever like everything that happens in a book. I suppose they had to happen this way for whatever is going to happen in the next book. I’m anxiously excited to see what happens next.
