Long before she ever met Josh and Sophie Newman, the immortal human Virginia Dare faced down an ancient evil on the soil of the New World colonies. And without her strength, the Twins of Legend might never have had a world to save at all.
Now, that lost story is told. . . .
The infamous Rattenfnager, the Pied Piper of Hamlin, has come to the East Coast of the Americas. But while in Europe he earned his living as a ratcatcher, he now carries with him an ancient and incredibly powerful flute—one that he plans to use to seize control of the new colonies, and eventually the entire continent. Only, Virginia Dare stands in his way, and she has a flute of her own.

This is a very well written book that gave a nice light on the character of Virginia Dare. Just like Machiavelli, she was one of the characters in The Alchemyst series that I was rooting for. She’s one of thise misundersyood characters that is portrayed as selfish and self-serving but with a deeper persona.
This book pretty much sums up why I like her character. She’s everything girl power stands for. Reading this book was like a breath of fresh air. It made me wish for a longer one that focused on her bavk story, as well as Machiavelli’s. 😁 Anyway, this is a nice read. And for every true fan of The Alchemyst, this is something you shouldn’t pass on.
The story follows Virginia investigating a mysterious ship that docks in the port. We get more on how Virginia lived previous to the story and how she wants to protect people. We also see in the final fight how she can be savage and ruthless to those she dislikes/those she sees as monsters.
There's reference made to events, which were also mentioned in the others stories, about things the main "villain" of the short has done in the past but it is not necessary to read the others as none of the mentioned references happen on page.
Virginia Dare was always my favourite Nicholas Flamel character. So, naturally, I loved this story focused on her. This was a fun romp and I enjoyed the cast—Edgar Allan Poe was a good addition to this tale. All the little references to Poe's works could definitely be cringy for some, but I enjoyed them where I picked up on them.
Written by Edgar Allen Poe. Monsieur Jupiter Dupin Tempest is an observant boatswain who accompanies Poe and Virginia Dare on this adventure after supplying the initial intelligence about a mysterious ship with a strange cargo.
A good short story that gets you just a bit more of your favorite Immortals. It took me a bit to reorient myself in time and recall who I knew already and who I was just meeting. Fun and exciting read though!
12/22/25 I need more of Edgar Allan Poe and his team up with immortals! (Dr. John Dee would be great!) Also, more of Virginia Dare's adventures would be fun too!
12/5/21 I loved Edgar Allan Poe as a new addition to the series! I hope there will be more of him later. I also caught the references of "The Masque of the Red Death" and "A Tell-Tale Heart." Virginia Dare was as mysterious as usual.
If you like this book then I suggest: The Fable series The Killer of Enemies series
