Contains audiobooks one and two of the Lair for Rent series.
Lair for Rent, audiobook one:
Walter is an artificial-intelligence accounting software given great abilities in a world filled with super heroes and villains. His goals are simple: build lairs capable of taking out heroes that invade them and to use their loot to help him build a criminal business empire.
Okay I am not sure what I just listened to but it fun and action packed. Not being sy-fi geek the whole IA is a little bit above me and I didn't really understand how Walter worked or operated but I still enjoyed it. This is two book in one but to be honest it seemed like one book made up of lots of small stories as the team tackled each new fight or situation trying to make money. It was fun having the main guys the so called badies but like most books out there end up saving the world. It seemed strange (and is something I expect more with computer games) having the characters level up after most major fights and gain a new skill set but somehow it worked. I liked the quirky characters and the author used his imagine well coming up with unique powers, who knew a bouncy ball could be so dangerous. Plenty of action kept me listening until the end. I think I preferred the second book as the team comes together more to fight one enemy as opposed to the first book where it was lots of battles against different foes.I I liked the narrator. He made the story entertaining
Was a fun book, nothing too serious, nothing too crazy enjoyable through, and through definitely a little bit of a different take look forward to more books from the series.
Things I liked: -Walter essentially being a real estate agent/misc product appraiser -Walter and his ongoing bafflement at the dynamics of human interaction -Walter trying to be a good boss and a villain at the same time -creative use of powers (food based super that used ham to block lasers and tried to use custard to suffocate Niles) -Walter diving into base defenses with an analytical eye colored with childlike enthusiasm (sharks, a good layer of defense. Hmm, they need lasers XD) -Walter's crew; loyal, driven and smart the lot of them -time travel, inter-dimensional Shenanigans, and crazy science -Ox, he needs a better translator very badly... XD
Things I didn't like so much: -tons of stuff going on (side quests and the like); made it difficult to keep track of everyone's progress despite Walter being a detailed and analytical POV charrie -how villainous the heroes are; only real difference between heroes and villains are the villains tend to have better life insurance, dark vibes, and care more about collateral damage to their holdings than the Heroes do to their cities -trope nods and twists were so plentiful, they became mind numbing after a while (every once in a while, some caught my attention--food powers used in combat!--but most of the time it was like watching scenery go by during a road trip) -the fact that everyone had life insurance (ie, you die and come back after a few days) meant the stakes were blase even when it came down to world annihilation (at least, that's how it came across to me)
Overall a fun concept, but I'd have to be in the mood for a violent, rambling read before coming back to it.
