Tarot Academy #5

Spells of Mist & Spirit

Rate this book
How dark are you willing to go for the ones you love?

No matter how hard we fight, no matter how much we’ve already lost, the Dark Arcana have only grown stronger. Thanks to the traitorous mages they’ve recruited into their ranks, now we’re vastly outnumbered and outmagicked.

We’ve got one last choice.

Destroy them, or let the Dark Magician turn us into slaves, obliterating everything—and everyone—we’ve ever loved.

Our enemy claims that the darkness lives in all Arcana. That in a world of light and shadow, one cannot exist without the other. That all of us are but one tragedy away from giving in to evil.

Even the mages who’ve sworn to protect me.

Even me, the Star Arcana herself.

I know he’s right. I’ve seen that darkness. Tasted it. Felt it rise up in me like a black flame. All of us have.

The question is…

What happens when we unleash that dark fire on the world?

Sarah Piper is a witchy, Tarot-card-slinging paranormal romance and urban fantasy author. Through her signature brew of dark magic, heart-pounding suspense, and steamy romance, Sarah promises a sexy, supernatural escape into a world where the magic is real, the monsters are sinfully hot, and the witches always get their magically-ever-afters.

Readers have dubbed her work “super sexy,” “imaginative and original,” “off-the-walls good,” and “delightfully wicked in the best ways,” a quote Sarah hopes will appear on her tombstone.

Originally from New York, Sarah now makes her home in northern Colorado with her husband (though that changes frequently) (the location, not the husband), where she spends her days sleeping like a vampire and her nights writing books, casting spells, gazing at the moon, playing with her ever-expanding collection of Tarot cards, binge-watching Supernatural (Team Dean!), and obsessing over the best way to brew a cup of tea.

Okay so finally I get to rant about all the books in the series. I read the series within a handful of days cuz honestly, the books have no real content and pure torture. The plot majorly is about Stevie who is left an orphan when her parents died because of an accident. She has been always restricted from attending magic academy and told magic is a curse until one dire day when she is imprisoned, and she is left with the only choice to join the academy and explore her magical powers.

Upon reaching school she realizes that her mother was a very powerful seer and her prophecies always came true. There is a pronouncement related to rise of the Dark magician and Dark arcana but the details have been lost with her mother and now she has to translate her mother's prophecies and save the world.

Except..
And here comes a big EXCEPT...

She is busy having sex and breaking up with four hot mages who form a brotherhood. This plot was insufferable, as it read more like an erotica rather than a fantasy. The content was so little. Characters had these dense personalities but instead of everything being explored, sex with Stevie was treated like a band-aid to all kinds of trauma. There was so much lust that it was impossible to get through the plot. Stevie's solution to all the problems were sex. I am mean dude! Do at least something worthy to be the 'chosen one', 'the spirit blessed'. But no, she was busy having an orgy. I just.. Just can't. The big finale was unsatisfying too, and not gonna lie, I was rooting for all these stupid MCs to die and the villain to win and finally end this torture.

Will not recommend, please read other better books, I mean even twilight is better than this.

Only reason I'm not giving it 1 star is because I don't usually do it and it scares me.

I truly can’t be bothered to write a full review. Honestly, as was probably obvious from my other reviews, I was over the drama. It’s all being dragged out, and I just didn’t care about Ani at all – so it was hard to like the story because of it. I was still cringing about everything that was said, their ‘lovey-dovey’ names for each other are terrible omg if anyone would say “ginger snap” to me in real life I’d punch them. Stevie was very self-centred once again, they barely look at her mother’s work, which is supposedly the most important thing, so that bothered me a lot. Cass was the only person that I seemed to care about a little, but we still don’t know his freaking age. I already hated Stevie in the last book(s), but I HATED her in this one. Her behaviour is insanely childish while she’s supposed to be in her twenties, Why do any of these people even like her. She was also once again ready to sacrifice every single soul in this life as long as HER lovers survived. She. Sucks. Glad the last 4 books were for nothing. Her mouthing off to everyone is fucking childish and I’m so glad I don’t have to listen to her for a second longer. One moment that I almost liked her was Anticlimactic for sure. She still hasn’t had any real magic lessons, but she can come up with all kinds of crazy spells. Of course, makes sense. What a special snowflake she is.
I’m choosing to believe that no matter how desperate things might seem, there is always a light to be found in the darkness.
And if there isn’t?
Then you find a way to be your
own fucking light.

Nat and Isla are still the flattest characters ever; they’re here to support Stevie and that’s it. I mean, what do we actually know about them? Do we even know anyone’s last name – including the guys’???? A big plot hole was the fact that Stevie said that she’d never heard of dream-casting before, but I’m 1000000000% sure she already did it to Doc in the first book, and they talked about it? What the fuck? The ending was just one big clusterfuck of emotions,

There are still many unanswered questions, such as the fact that the entire world still hates witches and burns them, but of course, Stevie and her men don’t care because it’s outside of the academy. It wasn’t mentioned at all how they were going to change that, but ok. All of the characters are still insanely flat, Jessa and basically all the other girls only existed so that it seemed like Stevie could actually have friends without having sex with them. I’m sorry, I’m so over this.

This is a short review about the five book series Tarot Academy.

I liked the plot in this series. It had enough twists and turns to keep my attention through the whole series. The heroine is endearing, the story compelling and there is real friendship and a lot of good time between the heroine and her harem.

I want to read more of Sarah's series and lucky for me, there is another one in my audiobook subscription.

Suffice to say this series didn’t do it for me. While I thought book one held promise it kind of went downhill after the fact. Worse yet was how this book opened some huge can of worms, for instance the outside human world trying to ostracize and outcast magic users is not even covered. So are they going to live in peace and harmony now like a damn miracle? Sure they lost the ring leader that was steamrolling this but I think as we’ve all seen in the US, issues can blow up and continue to gain traction regardless whose behind it. I just don’t understand how they are supposed to live peacefully after all this. Not to mention the heroines special abilities really fell flat. We rarely got to see her use and expand her powers which makes her being this all powerful one in a million magic user completely fall flat. Didn’t really seem like she had a huge role in the end of the world as all the premonitions proved. I also didn’t love the guys and the one I was slowly learning to appreciate goes rogue, becomes the baddie and then is all mopey over all the horrible shit he did when he was warned what would happen but he was too cocky and insecure to take notice. Just had so many expectations and hopes for the end that could save the series but alas it was just okay and even with me speed reading through this I struggled making it to the end.

This book series had enough to keep me going, although it was a struggle at times. I found my thoughts drifting a bit while reading. I don't know if the book was repeating itself or if there were so many similar scenes that it just felt like deja vu. I finished the series and am open to reading other things by the author, but I'm not going to be madly looking them up as soon as this review is finished.

It feels almost ridiculous that I finished this whole series since it is sooooo spicy but it was so good tbh. I thought it was very interesting how, throughout the series, we got to delve into each characters’ traumas and dealt with them in a very loving but still serious way, not dismissive or trite.

The writing wasn’t Shakespeare, but sometimes you just want to read a book where the main character calls the bad guy a “total f*ck face” bc indeed he was.😌

Great plot AND great ~plot~ 👍

Ahhh the thrilling conclusion we’ve all been waiting for.... I give Sarah Piper so much credit for this book. Most series end with the last major stand playing out over maybe 2-5 chapters at the end of the final book. It almost ALWAYS feels rushed through and it’s not always satisfying. This was NOT like that. This entire book was the preparations for and the playing out of the last stand and I loved every second of it. The details truly made you feel like you were there with the characters. It was beautifully done. No story lines left open; it had all the beautiful closure you would expect and want from the final book of a series. Sure, epic battles don’t leave very much time for the spicy stuff, but Sarah Piper still managed to get it in there regardless, even in smaller doses. Amazing, well thought out ending to a wonderful series.

Unfortunately, I still have a ton of questions about this world after completing the series. There are basic pieces of information to help us visualize the world that we are never given. For example, how old is everyone? We know how old Stevie is, because she mentions it several times, but we never get anyone else's ages. We know Doc is "nowhere near" twice her age, but that's the closest we get. It makes it really hard to visualize some of these connections. For example, the Carly/Baz relationship - how much of an age difference are we talking there since Baz has been at the academy for at least a few years but Carly is a first year? How much of an age gap does Stevie have with her friends and boyfriends? Also, why oh why are some of the first years as old as their fifties as mentioned in book 1? I have no idea how to explain that based on the rest of the story played out in the series - apparently magic is familial, and it was super unusual that Stevie grew up knowing nothing about her magic or receiving any training. If that is so unusual and magic is usually in families, how come some people don't come to the academy to start their training until so much later? It's never talked about, thought about, or commented upon. It feels like there were a lot of these kinds of plot points brought up but never fully explained, so I am left without a clear sense of the world that I was hoping would be fully fleshed out by the end. It also feels like we don't see a lot of growth in several of the characters; they don't really ever fully deal with their trauma.

I am proud to have finished this series - I was seriously close to simply DNF it...

The story started out good. I mean the main character being a super special snowflake is a little on the nose but I dont mind if it is pulled off right - only it wasnt.
I have no idea what the magick system here is really - something with Tarot that I really didnt get, something with elemental affinities that I still dont understand, a lot of chanting and crystals and potions and and... its all over the place honestly.
The whole storyline seems rushed, especially from book three onwards. I was also never really sure what exactly was the issue - the Dark Arcana? The corrupt APOA agents? The actual shit in the real world? I dont really get the connections.
The characters? Puh.. everybody has an incredibly tragic backstory. I dont know - its too much for me.
The relationship(s)? Dont work for me either. It kind of interrupts the actual storyline and awkwardly in some instances. Why is everyone immediately so okay with their relationship(s)? The professor/student thing also doesnt irk anyone in the end...

I feel this series had a lot of potential if the author had taken more time to develop the world, the story and the characters.

What an ending! This book was action packed and nothing was as it seemed!!

PERFECT ending to a wonderful series!!! When you read fantasy you can take nothing and no one for granted!!

Stevie went through every emotion and every situation you can even imagine in this book! Her growth and insight through this series was chefs kiss!! Her four mages are equally as wonderful.

Read this series! I highly recommend!

NO SPOILERS!
I honestly loved this series so much. I read tarot cards so a magical plot based around the tarot was a lot of fun to read. I gave every book 5 stars as they kept me coming back for more with a gripping plot and also some hot romance. I loved the relationships but also the friendships. The plot was action packed and the romance kept things even more interesting. I didn't feel like any parts felt like filler. I loved the pace not to fast nor slow. I feel I enjoyed this more because of my connection with tarot so I'm aware that is what really gave these books a 5 star from me. I also loved all the characters which is not often the case with me.
This was my first time ready Sarah Piper and I gel well with her style of writing and mind that created this world, I found myself fully immersed in.
I'm looking forward to reading more from her, I'm particularly excited to read her new gargoyle series coming out later this year.

One of the best paranormal romantic fantasy series I’ve read in a long time. Spice where it’s needed to advance the romantic relationships. A magic system with a backstory and gives you better knowledge and description of Tarot cards and their meanings. Characters that are well formed with baggage they each need to overcome. Friendship relationships that are also explored and developed. A strong FMC who is doing the best she can with the knowledge has and deals with her own baggage and shadow self. Found family. All of this is set against a world ending prophecy they are trying to prevent.

Truly a journey I enjoyed being on even in the dark moments.

Make sure to read the Content Warnings before starting the books as there is some past abuse themes dealt with by some of the characters.

Daaaamn!!!

This series was BRILLIANT! I mean from start to finish it sucks you right in and doesn’t let go! I’m super happy with how the ending was written as well. No rushing through it and most importantly still on par with the series’ tone. First time I read this author but I will be reading anything she publishes if she keeps writing like this! The world she created is complex but well explained even for someone who’s not familiar with tarot like myself. One thing I truly appreciated was that the sex scenes were scattered throughout the books with a sense of purpose! None of them felt rushed or placed there for word count. They genuinely helped the story and in making the characters bond with each other.

It's me, rather than the book. I'm just not really into tarot, I don't really know anything about it, and it's pervasive in this series. It feels like you need to vaguely understand at least a bit about it to get into this series. I like Sarah's writing in general, she creates interesting worlds and characters, and the writing is technically/grammatically good. I'm just really not grabbed by the underlying subject matter of this series, and by the time I got to this book...? I'm just done with it.

I really liked this series! I listened to all of them on audiobook, which was nice, as each character had a different voice and I could feel the emotions.

I think it was concluded well and it kept me guessing the whole time. I like that the main battle was closer to the middle of the book and that there was a bit more to the conclusion at the end. I really wish there were more books as I want to know how things continue to play out in their lives. I really grew to like the characters so I'm sad this series is ended. I'll have to read the author's other books!

I absolutely could not put this dark academia/witchy/reverse-harem series down. I read the whole series as fast as I could get my hands on them. I loved the complexity of the characters, each with their own unique perspectives and depth of personality. The main character, Stevie, is one of my favorite literary females- spunky, independent, intelligent- you name it. The blend of tarot myth and slow-burning relationships kept me on the edge of my seat. I will definitely be reading more from Sarah Piper.

This was overall a good series. Was this groundbreaking, incredible, absolute page turner, up all night for answers? No.

This is the final book in this series and everything finally comes to a head in the big battle. It’s a little anticlimactic to be honest but had a lot of good parts. Some of the ending is a bit cheesy but overall it was good.

Lots of bad stuff happens in here, but you do get a fairly solid ending where the plot gets wrapped up and doesn’t have gaping holes in it.

Epic conclusion

This was an amazing fast paced series and the conclusion even more so. Constant action from the first page to the last. I absolutely loved these characters. Lots of suspense, surprises, and heartbreak but this couldn't have had a better conclusion and a great epilogue to seal it all up. I would have liked to seen more time with her friends and men but it was time for a showdown that did not disappoint.

This book was beyond amazing. Once I started reading there was no putting it down. It moves along at a pace which makes for the most comfortable read as it is not too fast nor too slow. You will love these characters and want to know more about them and no matter what happens you want to be there for them. the story will grab you and keep you glued to the book till you finish the last page. This book must be read, no doubts about it.

Amazing ending to a fantastic series. Like all Sara's work, I could not put this one down. It was just non stop good stuff from beginning to end. I am very much looking forward to a re-read from book 1 to this phenomenal finale! It is so very bitter sweet that this was the last book... hopefully there will be some additional epilogues in the future. Thank you Sara for this marvelous journey. I will be waiting not so patiently for the next one.

5 stars of Spells and Mist and Spirits by Sarah Piper. This is the fifth and final book in the Tarot Academy series. Holy Cow this was a fantastic ending to a great series. This series was one I could not put down. I feel like everything went at a great pace and nothing was rushed. I feel like every question had throughout the story was answered. Nothing was left out. Stevie and her men got the perfect ending. This series is a must read.

I actually liked this one way better than 3rd and 4th books. It seemed the most put together but thats probably because its the last book. Everything ties together and there's the HEA. I have to be honest and say I dont recommend the series. Its boring through most of it and drawn out. That love scene between Doc and Stevie though might have made it worth it for me because dayum! Haha. We had to wait awhile for those two. Anyways, its a solid 3 stars.

Good story, fairly good narrators, I am not so much into the reverse harem, I have trouble keeping up with one man, much less “being in love” with 4 at the same time!!! I continued with the series only bc the story itself I found to be intriguing. I like romancey books but prefer it to be that just a romance with in a fantasy world! The author write smoothly just for me this is not a YA STORY! 🤷‍♀️ happy reading

I have submitted this review after listening to the audiobook of this title. (Purchased Audible)

Finally, the day of reckoning, but before it comes to pass, there is a lot for our spirit witch and four mages to go through. Their circle has expanded through need and friendships. Through hard days of death and carnage on the world stage, their love and need for each other increases, strengthening for what they know must inevitably they must all face.

This wasn’t too bad! I’m glad I enjoyed the last instalment of the series because the middle books were pretty meh. The spice scenes were minimal but tasteful. Stevie’s character stayed true throughout all of it. I did find it weird she just randomly knew how to wield a sword well without training but oh well. I got teary at some events near the end I won’t spoil and yeah just rounded up nicely :)

i was on the edge of my seat with this one. that last chapter had me crying.
i do wish it would have gone over more into how the rest of the world faired at the end as there is still alot of unknowns there and didnt feel that was wrapped up, whether that was intentional id love to know more; did the apoa branches clear everything up with the humans? did the witches and mages underground fit back into society or are they still living in fear of persecution?

The conclusion, but definitely my favorite of the series. A lot of information, but dished out consistently. No slow or rushed parts. Everything flowed well, had beautiful detailing, and all questions answered.
It is a reverse harem romance so there is a HEA. New and old friends gather was a nice cup of tea. Sad to say goodbye to this crew, but after all, "there's no problem a proper cup of tea can't fix".
