Red Riding The Alpha

Rate this book
Red lived in a small town in Pennsylvania with her grandmother. The town was known to invite supernatural creatures every year. Whenever the mating season struck, it was a ritual for young women, human or not to stand partly dresses in the town center, blindfolded and ready to be taken by the wild beasts lurking in the forest.

Things take a twist when Red turns eighteen and she's ordered to participate in the ritual. Blindfolded on the night of evil, innocent Red is devoured by a man who called himself the Alpha.

"Let me make that tingling sensation in between your thighs disappear, it will only take a moment, Red"

I don't want to really put a rating. That would feel strange for whatever reason, but I have a lot of thoughts about this book and I want to put it out somewhere.

First of all, the grammar was not good. This is somewhat on par for Wattpad, but there would be entire chapters where only a few lines of dialogue would be punctuated correctly. This is a book that was advertised as being paid when somebody wanted to read ahead of chapters on Wattpad, so it's not entirely a free book.

When it comes to storytelling, the plot, characters, etc. this book was controversial even for Wattpad readers.

The concept of the book was interesting and unique, which is what kept me reading. Basically, all human women above 18 have to stand in a line one night about once a year while the werewolves come to inspect if they are mates. This is because of a truce the town had with this pack of werewolves in return for the werewolves to not attack the town. The women are forced to leave their families and towns, and it's a horrible, unspeakably cruel system, and because of that it makes the female MC Red's situation more intriguing. She's supposed to be an innocent character who's forced to mate with this alpha-type character who rules over everything, but the complexities of this situation is never explored despite the initially compelling world building. There's just so many lost opportunities.

Luciano is an unlikeable male lead who is seen objectifying women in his point-of-view while showing iffy consent issues with Red from the start of their relationship, and Red takes to him too easily when they start using each other for sex. There's little chemistry. While Red's friend Lisa

In fact, Red's character takes a major nosedive. In the beginning of the book, she's obviously naïve, but she also shows love for her grandmother and reluctance to partake in the cruel annual ritual. If she was chosen by anyone but werewolf royalty, it's doubtful she would ever see or be able to contact her grandmother again, and it's something she is actually concerned about in the beginning of the book. But after being chosen by her mate, her once-innocent character becomes totally consumed with having sex with Luciano. Like, that is it...she seemingly has no motives, goals, or any other character traits. Both him and her would initiate sex at inopportune, bizarre moments. Somewhere around the last middle-ish part of the book Red's character completely changes because of plot reasons, but it just renders her as extremely unlikeable rather than tragic to a character that already had major development problems to begin with. The plot holes everywhere also make everything have less sense. Wattpad readers also had constant complaints about the trajectory of her character because it was so bizarre. Red's character can easily be summed up as unintelligent and lustful, and I don't think she's seen to have many redeemable traits in general, much less be able to be sympathized with. Despite what the title implies, she never actually dominates Luciano anywhere to my knowledge.

Like I said before, Luciano was also unlikeable. His relationship with Red is dominated by lust rather than any real romance, and he also regularly brushes away any of Red's concerns in their relationship which makes him appear uncaring. It's not convincing that he and Red are really, truly in love. There's a scene where he continues having sex with her when she constantly tells him "Wait," another where he spanks Red as a type of punishment without asking for consent. I know there's at least one other scene where he does something even worse and many readers complained in the comments, but I can't find it now. I'm not sure if I just can't find it or she deleted it because of the negative responses from readers, but Luciano is already a problematic character without it. Even if rough stuff is a big part of your book, if the main characters are supposed to be soulmates and this is supposed to be a romance, shouldn't they like...act like it? This is hardly a love story.

So...are we supposed to hate Luciano, or is this book badly labeled when it should be marketed as kinky non-con? I don't know. In Wattpad, there's a tag for "abuse," but that's so vague and could mean anything. I mean, that also be referring to or to the general concept of women being forcibly marked and be away from their families. It's so ambiguous.

The plot is also a mess. I don't want to get into too much detail about it, but the ending was very unsatisfactory. This is apparently the first book in a trilogy, and I can't see how it works together as a whole because I didn't read the others. However, I don't really want to read any more of the books: the more it went on, the more it drifted away from the Halloween-like premise that made it different and exciting to begin with and the more the whole book became so convoluted. It's really disappointing, because the beginning of the book, if the writing were to be tightened, shows so much promise. It's rare to see a Wattpad werewolf book give werewolves that type of mysterious atmosphere because most of the ones I see are from the viewpoints of a werewolf female character or take place in a typical school setting. I want to see more werwolf romances with a human lead and a tense, terrifying atmosphere. But this book ends up going so badly from there, even for a Wattpad book, I can't recommend it. I think a lot of readers were disappointed.

The story was captivating.
Kept me on the edge of my seat.
There was a lot of hidden treachery from unexpected sources....Lisa for example.
Want to see more past part 3 on this one!
One of the spoilers For me was all of the activity that happen after Ref gave birth to Fiona. She should have had more time with her bonding instead of away from her.

Okay... So this story has potential but it still has that heavy Wattpad/Fanfiction vibe and not exactly the more polished “published” vibe that I personally gear towards. There were so many grammar mistakes and the translation was... I honestly have no words because “subpar” seems far too kind. The only thing that kept me going was that I actually spent money on the book not realizing there was a free copy on Wattpad (Thanks Facebook ad)

So, onto the actual story itself. I loved the idea of the plot and the world the author created which definitely kept me interested. The execution itself was quite choppy and I felt the story line a bit rushed, if not jumpy. The characters themselves had so much potential but I found myself craving more character development, which unfortunately fell short. Surprisingly the sex scenes were the best writing of the entire book but I would have also liked to see more development for the main characters’ relationship.

If you can look past the translation, grammar and the choppy story line progression it’s actually quite entertaining (sometimes predictable) and easy read.

It's honestly so sad that we live in a society where sex is the most important aspect of a story. Character personality and development? Not relevant. Plot holes? Nonexistent. Good writing? Meh. Solid storyline? Who?

So just because a story has "good sex scenes" it is good? That's such a damn shame.

The idea was interesting. But I didn't like that it was quite literally human trafficking. Women over the age of 18 were left out at night, blindfolded, barely wearing anything, left out for anyone to see while they stood alone and terrified. And then the creatures just come and snatch them off and leave. Only women over 18. Misogynistic and disgusting.

Red's character was so inconsistent and irritating as hell. Who calls themselves weak every time they open their mouth? She has no respect for herself, and she can't make up her mind. She says she won't do one thing in the first sentence and the next sentence she'll do exactly what she said she won't.

The book is riddled with errors and inconsistencies, but since this is a Wattpad story I don't judge too harshly on that. It's Wattpad. People write for fun and rarely do you find a well-written story on there. This story is not one of those rare ones. It seems people rave about it just because of the sex, and that is honestly so disappointing. Readers and reviews these days are hard to trust because slap a sex scene in a story and hundreds of people will tell you its amazing, regardless of the plot and writing.

It has a good idea, but it is executed poorly. I am not sure if this was sent through Google Translate, if a teenager wrote this, or if English is not their first language.
Google Translate: Just don't. Phone a friend for this because that will not translate the book well.
Teenager: You have made a good effort, but definitely see about getting a proofreader.
ESOL: Again, you did a good effort, but find someone Fluent in English to proofread.
This story (along with the the other story The Alpha's Desire that I tried reading) are sloppy when it comes to the grammar. Poor word choices, and some words just all together missing from sentences.
It also drags on in some parts that don't need be, and in other parts it feels rushed. There are plot holes that make zero sense other than the author just offering "Because I said so" explanations. They need to offer backdrop for some of the decisions. And as much as I want to, the characters are pretty hard to like...Even the main characters.
I understand this is pretty common of Wattpad stories, but if the author wants her work to be taken seriously, she definitely needs to have someone proofread it, and she needs to explain things better without boring us to tears.
Sex scenes are pretty good though if you in it for the smut.

The translation into English could of been better. At first her maid was Victoria for about two chapters and then the name changed into Valerie. There are also chapters where they get Ben and Derrick messed up using Ben’s name instead.

There was obvious sentence mishaps where they used the wrong descriptive word, or the words were the wrong way around. But you get the general vibe of what they are saying.

The story was good! Very interesting, I couldn’t put it down obviously haha

Never thought I would be a fan of a retake on little Red and the big bad Wolf but it’s sexy.

Just not worth time nor money.

I read the first 12 chapters, and while the story is not overall bad, it is also not unique. Quite predictable when you go through the chapters. What is not worth my time is spelling and grammar mistakes on every single page, author should invent in some editing. Furthermore, irrational turn of dialogues or illogical behavior of characters, for example, main character one moment is a virgin, afraid, immature of male character, same second he drops his pants she is ok to go down on him. Characters and events development is lacking.

While the plot line has enough to be interesting, the character development is shallow, and the grammar/spelling/punctuation leaves much to be desired. The errors were severe enough to frequently disrupt the reading experience. As the reader, I had to stop reading to try and decipher what the author intended to say. It needs a lot of polishing to truly be considered ready for public distribution.

Don’t waste your time. It’s long and drawn out and basically stupid. Half the story doesn’t even make sense and I legit skimmed to the end. If I could give this 0 stars I would. The only half decent were the sex scenes. It’s like a poorly written porn, only the story is worse.

She sure knows how to write and please the people by exaggerating the content without upsetting her readers.

The moment in the 3rd bk of the series , luciano's POV. I was crying so badly at that.

3.5 🌟's. Loved the characters and storyline. High smut, but easy to gloss over those parts if not into it. Average rating only due to editing. Will continue on to next book!

Nope, this story was all over the place, female was hard to like and control. Male wasn't Alpha enough. So much potential but missed the mark for me.
