Nickel might be a water elemental dragon, but even he has limits—and the sudden rain storms, hail, and snow in midsummer are way over the line. Luckily, he works for Dane’s Supernatural Consulting firm and can use those resources to figure out who keeps mucking with the weather and get them to stop.

Soon Nickel realizes he isn’t the only one searching for the weather worker: the enemy he has been hunting for ten years has finally reappeared, and it’s a race to see who will reach the weather worker first. Nickel isn’t certain he’ll win, or even survive, the attempt, but he’ll do whatever it takes to save the dragons.

2 1/2 stars. Dragons! And dragons with magic! And elemental dragons with magic! Right up my alley.

This book is the fourth in the series and the first I have read. The story is easy to understand without reading the others but it is just as easy to realize that I was missing a lot of background information that would have enhanced my reading experience. In fact, after reading the summaries of the earlier books it was obvious I was missing even more than I realized and this was a rich world populated with many other magical species.

This was a straightforward and solid story. There really wasn't any detection or a mystery to be solved. There wasn't a cliffhanger but there are threads left to be developed later. I'm sure I would have enjoyed it even more if I had read the previous stories.

I received an ARC from Netgalley and from the publisher in return for a fair review.

It is about time I catch up with this series - full of dragon shifters and their magic, witches, half gods, and evil scientists out to harness the dragons’ powers for nefarious purposes. Dane (half god and in charge of a supernatural detective agency) and his partner Mercury (dragon shifter and SupFed working with the FBSI) are raising the seven dragon kits they rescued from the labs about ten years ago. And to my great delight this fourth book focuses on one of the older kits – Nickel.

Okay, so I shouldn't have started this series at book 4. I spent some time feeling a little lost, but with it being a short read, I figured it was worth seeing through to the end.
I did enjoy the dragons in here- usually human form, with nice colourful hair, but they can turn into dragons on will. There's also magic involved too, and each dragon has their own type of magic.
The detective agency theme is not a unquiet one and I have read of other supernatural detectives, so I wasn't that lost there, and it read very much like you would expect a detective agency would, so the first chapter was recognisable.
Then the story moved into it's own plot, introducing a new dragon that needs saving. That's when the whole backstory I was missing really caused a problem. Dragons are being kidnapped and experimented on, no idea why but I can guess.
The dragons are all pretty in here, can do cool stuff and I'm not sure what age anyone is. Never mind, it didn't stop me from enjoying it.
Dragon Detective is probably worth reading with the rest of the series, and feels like something I've read previously. Because of the shortness of the book, I didn't really get time to know anyone in detail, but there's more to come, which might develop everyone a bit more.
Anyway, this is good reason why I should really read a series in order.

Many of you know just how captivated I have been from the beginning with this unique, light urban fantasy series that tells the story of a magical detective and his family of dragons as they work to free dragons from the scientists that are experimenting on them.

Each installment advances the story forward over the years so the dragon kits are growing up. This latest segment has Nickel emerging as an adult dragon and Dane’s new investigation partner. Dane hands him his first big supernatural case- discover the source of the weird weather hitting the area. Nickel’s dragon element is water magic and he recognizes that something more powerful than him is creating the huge thunderstorms, hail, and wacky snow in the summer. Could it be another dragon?

Meanwhile, a terrified and exhausted air elemental dragon, Platinum is trying to figure out the big world around him. Platinum has lived in captivity while the scientists did painful and awful experiments on him for his entire twenty years. He escaped and he is not going back, but somehow the small town he found is inhabited by dragons and dragons don’t typically like another encroaching on their territory. The scientists will want him back and they can’t be far behind. He needs to run.

This was a shorter installment in the series and hits the ground running. It assumes that the reader has read the series in order and understands who all the characters are and what their situation is. I was excited to see that the story is told from Nickel’s perspective. It has been ten years since the events of the first book and Nickel is all grown up. Lumie is at his mysterious best while he helps Nickel and Dane with this latest case.

While I enjoyed this story, it felt very much like a transition/set up for what is coming. A lot is left open though the immediate plot of Platinum and the pursuing scientists is resolved. I am now antsy to see what comes next since I have a suspicion about Nickel and Platinum. And I enjoyed that extra tidbit about the origin of Lumie’s oddities.

So I was left wanting and in a good way. For those who enjoy heartwarming and lighter m/m urban fantasy, I would highly recommend this series about a supernatural detective and his family of quirky dragons.

My thanks to Less Than Three Press for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is the fourth story in a series, and best enjoyed when read in series.

Dane, a demigod, and his husband Mercury, a precious dragon shifter, have been diligently assisting dragons in need for the past ten years, while also raising their clutch of mis-matched and genetically-modified (by evil human scientists!!) kits.

This is the first time the narrator is not either Dane or Mercury. Instead, Nickel, who is now an 18 year old dragon and a full-on detective working for Dane's supernatural consultant firm, tells half the story. The other half of the story is told by Platinum, an 18 y/o air dragon recently escaped from the experimentation lab where he's lived his whole life.

Platinum has been on the run for about three weeks. And, he's managed to hole up in a cabin in a tiny mountain town--learning how to survive on his own by taking odd jobs for cash. He smells the scent of dragons nearby though, so he knows he needs to move on before he's challenged for occupying the territory of another.

Nickel has taken on the role of lead investigator of a strange weather disturbance. At the same time, he's catching rumors of a new air dragon in the vicinity, and following a lead on some of the brutal human scientists who'd escaped capture by Dane and Mercury in a sting five years before. Nickel is a determined young man, bent on gaining justice for the dragons and eggs these cruel folks experimented on to steal their magic. Nickel and his kitmates have all survived such experimentation and he's more than ready to destroy anyone who plans to begin that business all over again.

This is a really interesting novella, with all the humor, twists and action that has become customary for this series. Nickel's kitmates are a hoot as usual, and a preteen Lumie is the wildest of this barely-tame bunch. His antics bring home not only Platinum, but a pair of kittens for the dragon kits to squabble over. Nickel's maturity and single-minded focus to his work is a great counterpoint to the actions of his dragon siblings. Meanwhile, Platinum's life is truly changing for the better. He's a special dragon, with untested and unwieldy powers thanks to the humans who experimented on him. It's good to see him get to use these powers to help himself remain free. It's also good to see that he and Nickel have an instant connection, one that may bear out a bit of romance in stories to come. In truth, Platinum is going to need a lot of TLC to connect with his kind in the real world, and I'm hoping that Nickel will be just the dragon for that job. He's got the strength, the smarts and the stamina, and I'd love to see a bit more of his heart as he hopefully gives it to Platinum.

Every review I've read from folks who have not read the series in order has lamented beginning in the middle, but not because the story can't stand on its own. More to the point, the richness and nuance of these characters' interactions makes the reader want to dig deeper. I know I'm really enjoying myself on these fights of urban fantasy.

I'm giving this a forward-leaning 3.5 stars mostly because I am intrigued by the world, but I am afraid that this isn't one of those series where you can just jump in at any volume and enjoy. It just felt like I was expected to know more about all the characters and the unique world that they're inhabiting than what was explained within the book.
That said, the story focuses mainly on Nickel and Platinum and the bond they have due to the evil scientists that are experimenting on dragons and torturing them (and may or may not be government-funded, I'm not sure). Nickel escaped them as a baby/kit and is now set on hunting them down and bringing them to justice with the help of the Supernatural Consultant Dane, and Platinum is on the run after finally escaping. A lot happens as the plot progresses and many happy discoveries and reunions take place.
It's, overall, a very positive book with action and warm-and-fuzzies galore. Definitely intrigued me enough to want to see if reading the preceding volumes would shed more light on things because it does definitely present a rather intriguing world.

Many happy thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the early read.

This book focuses on Nickel, the oldest of Dane and Mercury’s kits. Nickel has become a full fledged investigator and is still concentrating on the scientists who had experimented on him. Platinum is a dragon on the run from these same evil men. Though Nickel and Platinum don’t really meet in this story their lives are still intertwined.

As with the other books, this one jumped ahead a few years. Nicely written story that got one step closer to solving the mystery of who is behind the dragon experimentation. I like this series and I’ve gotten used to the serial format. Very imaginative storytelling and I’ve said in every other review, Lumie shines.

This is book #4 in the Supernatural Consultant series. This book should not be read as a standalone novel. To be understood fully, and to avoid spoilers, I recommend reading this really imaginative series in order.

Nickel is a water elemental dragon. He is now working at the Supernatural Consultant firm. He wants to find out who or what is messing with the current weather. His searches may put him in danger, though.

Platinum is on the run. He has to hide from those mad scientists who have made his life miserable. If only he could get far away fast enough. Little does he know danger is lurking.......

This was the latest installment of one of the most creative series I have had the pleasure to read. The characters all have such unique powers, personalities and names. I enjoyed learning more about some of the more rare dragons in this story. I really cannot wait for the next book!

A delightful short book (which I realized is number 4 in a series) on dragons living in the "human" world.
Really cute and sympathetic characters.
Perhaps because I jumped in later, I felt like I could use a lot more background information. But I'll check out book 1-3. I would have preferred to read the whole series in one book in one go though.
Good for anyone who enjoys fantasy, LGBTQ relationships and dragons. But let's be real, who doesn't like dragons?

Like the rest of the series Dragon Detective is short on pages but long on entertainment. Nickel and Platinum were wonderful characters and I loved seeing an older Nickel as he takes the lead in an investigation that leads him to Platinum. I'm looking forward to the next book to get more of this fascinating world and its wonderful characters.

I‌ ‌received‌ ‌a‌ ‌copy‌ ‌of‌ ‌Dragon Detective ‌by‌ ‌Mell Eight via‌ ‌IndiGo‌ ‌Marketing‌ ‌&‌ ‌Design‌ ‌in‌ ‌exchange‌ ‌for‌ ‌an‌ ‌honest‌ ‌review.‌ ‌This is a very addictive series that just keeps getting better with each book. I’m glad we finally got to meet Platinum and he is sweeter than I expected from a dragon experimented on by evil scientists all his life. While an air dragon, there seems to be something to his power that might be explained in a later story, much as we’ve learned more about Lumie over the course of the series. This book ends with several issues unresolved, so the next one can’t come out soon enough!

I received an ARC of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This did not affect my opinion of the book or my review itself.

The Supernatural Consultant series is a series I always look forward to.

I know when a new book comes out that I will enjoy it, and that it will be a quick and fun read with characters I love and root for. Found family is a favorite trope of mine, and this series has it in spades, with (immensely powerful) father figures who choose each other and their children (dragon kits), and build a loving and protective home.

In the fourth entry in the series, there is more of a focus on Nickel, one of the older kits, who is working with Dane (the Supernatural Consultant of the title). They continue their mission to try to track down the scientists who are doing cruel experiments on dragons, and this brings Platinum, who has escaped from a lab, into their lives.

Platinum is a great new character, and I am very interested to see where their relationship is headed. The other kits, and their family with Dane and Mercury, are as always a hilarious and mischevious delight. They are a highly unique, and very loving, family. With the switch in focus, we get less of Mercury and Dane, whose characters and relationship I love, which was disappointing. But I do like seeing the kits' characters coming more front and center as well, I just wanted a little bit more of a balance there.

I'm excited for the next book in the series!

I keep forgetting how much I enjoy reading books in certain series untill i'm actually reading them again, and these books are a good example of that! They're an easy enjoyable read, I kinda wish they were longer per book so things didn't feel a bit rushed sometimes, but I's still recommend them!
(I do read the NSP published version, with the very pretty covers, but since they don't have a pagecount on Goodreads, I select the old LT3 version instead :P Gotta keep those stats realistic!)

Firstly, don’t try to read this book as a standalone. It’s number four in the series and should totally be read as such. If you read it as a standalone, you’d probably enjoy the author’s well written words, but you’re not going to care much about the characters. It’s going to seem like more of a snippet from a longer story than anything else. But for those of us who squeal with joy each time we see one of these distinctive covers appear on Less Than Three’s coming soon list, this story is something that has been much anticipated. The dragon kits that we were introduced to way back in the first book of the series are finally growing up. Nickel, that blue haired stubborn little soldier, is now eighteen, and Mell Eight has gifted us with a story from his perspective.

This story does two important things. It ties up a loose end from the earlier books – the missing air dragon who remained in the clutches of the evil scientists – and at the same time that air dragon, aka Platinum, is set up the be the future love interest of Nickel. Well, I assume he will be. As it is the author managed to write this whole story without the two main characters actually meeting. And I guess that’s a great indication of Mell Eight’s skill. Usually if I read what I assumed would be a romance and there’s nary a kiss in sight, I’d be pretty critical of the whole thing. But I was completely sold on this story, and the anticipation of what could be was more than enough to keep me happy.

As always we have plenty of magic and get to visit with the whole dragon family. It continues the battle of good vs. evil and we learn that Lumie (secretly everyone’s favourite, I’m sure) may be even more special than we first thought.

Like I said, you aren’t going to think much of this if you don’t start right back at the beginning with Dragon Consultant. If you enjoy magical cuteness and well written fantasy, then it really is worth checking out this series.

I really love this series. That being said, this does not work as a stand-alone. There is too much explained in previous books for that to work here.

For the first time, we get the story from Nickel, the oldest of the dragon kits from the series, instead of from the parents, Dane and Mercury. Nickel has been working with Dane at his detective agency, and was part of the whole evil scientist shenanigans that happened in the previous stories.

Nickel has long been one of my favorites, and so getting to see his story as he falls for the newest dragon we've met. It's a much darker story (the whole series has been getting darker as it goes), and the stakes definitely are getting higher. The characters are still great, and I enjoy the story, but I do wish that they were longer. Each installment has seemed a bit too short for the story it's telling.

That being said, I still highly recommend these.

Mell Eight has started on the young kits stories with Nickel’s - yet not really Nickel’s story. Zinc’s egg twin, Platinum, is the focus of Dragon Detective. Nickel is on Platinum’s trail as are the scientists who held Platinum captive.

We learn what happened to Platinum during his time in captivity and get a glimpse of what may have happened to other dragons. Eight also shows us what is ahead for Lumie, Nickel, and Platinum and possibly Alloy.

Detective is action-packed and at times very funny due to Lumie’s exploits. Eight lays the groundwork for what is to come and I am beyond excited for this journey. So far the scientists are ahead, but I think Eight will have our dragons give them a run for their money.

I cannot wait for the next book and if you are just starting with this one, you have picked the right one!

I received an ARC of this book and I am writing a review without prejudice and voluntarily.

From that review: Dragon Detective gives this series a new couple of twists that I really enjoyed. Nickel, one of the dragon kits who has long been a favorite of mine, gets one of the two major pov here in the story. All the dragon kits are getting older and that's being reflected in the series. Some are finding their hormones just out of whack and starting to notice each other, normal no matter the species, others are still sucking their thumbs, but yes, maturation has set in with the appropriate consequences. Leaving their parents to deal as well..."

Another jump forward, 4 years this time.
Nickel is our main charcter in this installment and has grown into his job with Dane.
The investigation into the missing Platinum comes to a head and there is apparent resolution of the bad scientist who kidnapped all the dragons - but it does seem there may be puppetmasters in the background yet.

I have enjoyed reading this series a lot, seeing all the kits grow, seeing Dane and Mercury develop together and investigating the missing dragons and who is persecuting them. I read the 4 books together which worked well for me as paranormal/fantasy/dragons are not my normal thing (won books 1-3, bought book 4) so the story lines and resolutions all happened quickly.
Will be looking out for more books in the series.

I love this little series. Mell Eight has made an interesting and unique world that is full of magic and most importantly Dane and his dragon family. Each book in the series is a look into their life the adventures they have.

This one focus a little more on Nickel and new to the family member Platinum. It will be interesting to see where that story line goes.

This is such a cute book. Seriously, it's full of the most adorable characters. And there are kittens. And an elf. I think.

Pros: Cute and amusing.

Cons: Not a tremendous amount of depth. I get that it's a later book in a series, but not a whole lot of coherent worldbuilding, or background. Very short.

This story picks up later for dragon consultant. The main character is Nickel and we also meet Platinum. The usual adventure and craziness ensues. Kitnapping and evil scientists contribute to the action. All the dragons from the series are in this story.

Dragon Detective
Supernatural Consultant Book 4
by Mell Eight

★★★★★
109 Pages
3rd person, dual character POV
Themes: LGBT, Romance, Magic, Found Family
Triggers: off-page kidnap of child dragons, mentions of experimentation of child dragons, mentions of off-page organ removal
Genre: MM Romance, Urban Fantasy

Dragon Detective is the fourth book in the Supernatural Consultant series, and starts to deviate away from the previous main characters of Dane and Mercury. This is the first book where we have alternative characters take the lead: Nickel, and the previously lost Platinum, egg-brother to Zinc.

It was really great to see Nickel starting out on his own, almost an adult and learning where he fits into the wider world. He's always been one of my favourite characters and this book only goes to prove why. I had to do a little math at the beginning – never my favourite thing! – to figure out what the timeline gap was between the previous book and this one, because it didn't read clearly. In fact, it mentions that Becky's known Nickel for ten years rather than actually giving a definitive mention of how long it's been, so I had to figure that there was a 5 year gap between books 1 and 2, then book 3 was a year later, which means it must be four years since the previous story.

Another thing that surprised me was that when Platinum gets his POV, we're told that he's been in captivity for TWENTY years! That means Zinc and Platinum were eggs that hatched in captivity, or at least that's the only way I can make sense of that. I know Zinc is around the same age as Nickel, which is always been how it's phrased in the books, and since Nickel is now 18, I figured that meant Zinc and Platinum were of the same age with a year or two give-or-take.

The connection between Nickel and Platinum was super cute to watch unfold. Nickel took his job so seriously, while Platinum really ached for freedom and what that meant. Yet, they both acknowledge in some way that there's a bond drawing them towards each other. It was a really cute, somewhat bittersweet romance throughout the entire novel that never got the chance to actually take flight due to circumstances. I hope it might in later books, or at least be hinted at.

I have to admit, I also really loved the Soldier Dragon aspect, and the philospher's stone dragon idea, because they both have such a great opportunity to expand in later books. As usual Alloy and Lumie were utter stars of the show and never fail to entertain me.

I was so sad reading about everything Platinum has been through over the years. The fact that the scientists took one of his organs and he never even knew about it, that he was constantly put into surgery situations and had no idea what they were doing to him, it's all so sad. It makes you wonder if they've been doing what humans do to gorillas and elephant tusks – making so-called 'potions' by grinding up their organs, tusks and making 'medicine' from their limbs and blood. It's a sickening thing, but it might explain where all this warped dragon magic is coming from, that's being given to humans in the books.

Overall, it was quite a low-key romance, tense story with a bittersweet epilogue that promises more to come. I'm looking forward to reading more and seeing how it all unfolds.

trigger warning

The weather is being weird, with snowstorms in july and lots of changes that feel like a random number generator would be responsible. Gossip in town says there's a new residence - which can't be coincidental.

I felt a bit lost at places, but this is the fourth installment of a series I've never read before, so that was to be expected. Apart from that, I liked it. We have a found family of dragons and other paranormal creatures in a world where magic is openly accepted.

The plot was pretty straightforward, but hey, it's a novella. There simply isn't enough space to do many twists and turns.

I am unsure yet if I want to continue this series, but that has more to do with my gigantic pile of books that I want to read, and not with this being bad or anything like it. Might come back once I cleared some things out.
I am hoping for more gayness, because in this book, it was very focussed on a certain problem, and the gay relationship was there but only in the background.

The arc was provided by the publisher.

I received a free copy of this book from Netgalley. I am leaving my honest review.

This is the fourth book in the series and unfortunately where I began. The story stands on its own but I am missing relevant information that I would have has if I read the first three in the series.

It was a decent read but a little juvenile for my taste. Perhaps I should read the others in the series.
