Worlds' Finest, Volume 6: The Secret History of Superman and Batman

Rate this book
Lois Lane must file the story of a lifetime-from beyond the grave!

Flashing back to the childhoods of Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne, Lois weaves the tale of two heroes, destined by prophecy to be the worlds’ finest. Despite the dangers of their youth, both Superman and Batman reach adulthood and grow into heroes-but the omnipresence of an immortal force, Intri, spells trouble for Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Catwoman, Robin and Lois Lane.

A warrior of Apokolips hell-bent on luring Superman to another dimension, Intri makes Superman begin to question everything. Is he really a god? Could he have saved the planet Krypton? Was galactic warfare inevitable or the result of mortal folly?

Or was this interdimensional traveler a harbinger of planetary disaster all along?

Hindsight is 20/20 in this riveting tale of destiny and destruction from writer PAUL LEVITZ and artist JED DOUGHERTY.

Worlds' Finest #27-32.

Bit of a "meh" conclusion to the series -- six issues of small adventures of the Earth-2 trinity of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, as narrated by a semi-omniscient Lois Lane. Really only of value if you want a sense of completeness. Nicely illustrated in a Kirby-esque stlye.

This was a very poorly put together re-imagining of the same story told a babillion times, which is probably why the book series got canceled.

Last story

A last story style of thus book is pretty cool. I like the alternate story of Superman and Batman in Earth 2. Their early lives, loves and losses.

Who is the mysterious narrator and how do they know so much about Batman, Superman and their families?

The book goes through the early stages of the war on Earth 2. Those who are chosen and/cursed. However it does not give me anymore on the Huntress and Powergirl story i wanted. I am hoping there story continues/concludes with the main Earth 2 series.

While I'm sad to see the end of the Power Girl/Huntress team-ups, this volume serves a useful purpose in retelling the stories of Superman and Batman in Earth-2, from the perspective of Lois Lane. The differences between Earth-1 and Earth-2 characters is highlighted, and there's a little Forrest Gump-ing of the story, as Wonder Woman gets inserted into the lives of the other two on several occasions as a foil for an Apokolips character I don't recall ever seeing before (Intri). The best parts here are the details of the relationship between Batman and Catwoman as they both raise Helena, and some of the dynamics between Batman and Superman (and Lois and Kara) are nice as well. It's all familiar territory, if a little askew, so that weakened it a little, but that's really the only complaint I have. Oh, and the heavy handed foreshadowing throughout Lois' monologue. It also doesn't give any closure, basically ending where Volume 1 begins, and leaving the final days of Earth-2 untold. Still, it moves well for a long-winded monologue and is more touching than you'd expect for the New 52.

This one is more of an Earth 2 secret origins than a continuation of the worlds finest story line. Kara and Helena are now part of the greater Earth 2 story like so it makes sense that their story ends. I even like this volume it just doesn't fit with the five previous volumes.

It is told from the perspective of Lois Lane. The initial volume of Earth 2 killed off all the familiar heroes and introduced the new wonders. This volume gives some backstory to the heroes that were lost (mostly Superman and Batman but there is a strong Wonder Woman presence).

Its a good read and it can stand on its own without having to read the previous five volumes.

Becomes a supplement to the Earth 2 series and drops the two previous leads completely. Which is a strange move, and this story feels completely unnecessary.

3.5/5

I am surprised to see this has a rating under 3 stars, I didn’t think it was that bad. Also, even though it was slightly confusing for someone like me jumping in right at the end, everything was still explained and straightforward enough for me to read only this one!

I don’t really know a lot about Earth-2/this timeline and the overarching story in which this is set, but I did like seeing the flashbacks of young Clark and Bruce’s lives and Diana being there to help them. I was looking for a story about Clark Kent and this one came up so I figured why not. (The subtitle is what caught me most.)

It took me a second to understand exactly what was going on, not having seen the events leading to up to it - the hardest things to wrap my head around were knowing Lois was (1) dead - as were the 3 main heroes (2) now the robotic Red Tornado). I do wish I had seen more of the intervening things that lead here, so I suppose I can go back and read volume 1-5, but since I just wanted to read a quick Batman and Superman story, this fit that for me.

I am interested to see what others have to say about this but I’d give it a solid 3, maybe even 3.5, since is was entertaining enough and a quick read. Maybe it’s just not a great conclusion/entry to the entire story for others, but since I read it as a stand-alone it was fine to me.

The best volume of this series?

Of the six volumes of this series, this one is clearly the oddball, but it may also be my favorite. It does a nice job of wrapping things up after Power Girl and Huntress' story in the first five volumes.

It takes us back to Earth-two to tell the story of Superman and Batman. It is narrated by Lois Lane who has become the Red Tornado. I don't want to give too many details, but I thought it was a nice story with a great ending.

A 3.5 at times.

Goodbye Earth 2! The closing arc is really material that ties into Earth's End...or whatever it is called.
