Beyond the Halls is a fantastic way to get more acquainted with museums in a new way. I loved the sections on new ways to experience and interact with the pieces inside.

The anecdotes connected the author's life to her interest, bolster her credibility, and make for a personable story as opposed to a series of information.

Overall I think the best feature of this book, and any book for that matter, is the ease while reading and how I stopped realizing that I was as I got lost in the story.

I can't wait to dive into her next book!

Author Mackenzie Finklea approached me and offered me a free e-book in exchange for an honest review.

Beyond the Halls is an easy to read insider’s guide to loving museums. Finklea’s writing style is light and quick, which makes for a nice reading experience.

Her book is filled with advice on how to get the most out of a museum, how to find out what works for you when it comes down to visiting museums, and some personal anecdotes.

For me this isn’t the kind of book that you read in one go; rather something to pick up every once in a while. Even though I never sat down for it longer than 15 minutes at a time, I never had any difficulties getting back into it.

Mackenzie Finklea’s passion for museums and her enthusiasm in trying to spread and share that passion made this a fun and interesting reading experience for me. Thank you, Mackenzie, for letting me read your book!

An ode to museums everywhere.

I have always loved museums. I have such vivid childhood memories of going to the local natural history museums with my grandparents. Finklea did not have to convince me to go to a museum in her book but she definitely gave me some new insights!

This book goes through the history, purpose, and updates to museums in an inspiring way. I learned a lot of new information that challenged my perspective on museums.

What I Loved: I enjoyed Finklea's "voice" throughout the book. I never felt like I was being condescended. I felt as if I was having a conversation with a friend about museums.

What I Didn't Love: Honestly, I just wish the book was longer. I was craving more from almost every section. I also felt like a few aspects were too repetitive.

Overall, I think this is a fantastic debut and I would love to see this book in every museum gift shop!

Thank you to the author for sending me a copy in exchange for my honest review.

I came to Finklea's work partially due to the present circumstances meaning I could no longer visit some of my most cherished spaces, and I am so happy I was able to. Growing up with two painters for parents, a love of art and the spaces that hold it was not a choice. Some of the closest bonds I have formed with the city I grew up in was by exploring the museums it had to offer: from weekend trips to the Natural History Museum when I was little, to escaping the cold during winter break by ducking into the Breuer, these experiences absolutely shaped who I am and how I've grown to see the world. Museums have always been a happy place for me, and it felt amazing to read Finklea's work and know that someone else in the world (besides my parents and art school friends) felt the same. Beyond the Halls is not only informative, but written with a kind of heart behind it that makes her obvious love for these spaces bright enough to fill a room. She writes with a passion and well-informed understanding that allowed me to look at my past experiences through a different lens as well as make me want to try and switch up my usual routines. This is a book for both the museum lover as well as the skeptic, and not to mention a promise of shared joy at the end of quarantine !

A fun read on to the insights of museums! Finklea does a great job tailoring to all audiences (first time museum goers to regulars) while providing insightful information and background on museums. I enjoyed learning about the purpose and reasoning of the designs for various types of museums. It makes you think more or leads you to wonder about the actual space setup and question why artifacts are presented in such a way. Can’t wait to put some of the tips to practice on my next museum visit!

It's got interesting information in it but it truly reads like a master's thesis reworked to be a textbook for teenagers.

As soon as Mackenzie Finklea reached out to me on Instagram about her book, I knew it would be something I'd enjoy. I come from a family of history fanatics and adore museums, my partner proposed in The British Library (part museum, part library and part magic) and we spent the rest of our day wandering around London's museums. Finklea allows us a look behind the curtain and inspires you to take museums more seriously.

At the beginning of the book there's almost a disclaimer, saying that the book is tailored for those who may not enjoy museums at all and not the connoisseur. I was worried - but I shouldn't have been. After reading this book I forced my partner to agree to accept a new challenge: visit every museum in the UK. A quick google search showed me there were 6 museums in my city. I've only visited 2 of them (and plan to get married in a 3rd). In the UK in particular, there's no reason for the drop in museum numbers - it's a free, educational day out, why wouldn't we go? And yet, there is a problem worldwide with visitors dropping.

As a generation becoming more aware, its important we continue to support the arts, as museums play a vital role in our art and culture. Whilst we may not agree with some exhibitions and the ethics behind acquisitions, it is unfair to judge all museums the same. With proper research, you can find museums which are not wrapped up in problematic situations. The opposite view, is that this is a unique opportunity to witness artefacts that may soon be returned. Beyond the Halls helps remind you just how important museums are and why they're truly magical.

Finklea's work explore museum myths, teaches new ways to enjoy the day out and approach exhibits. Her enthusiasm and passion for museums is infectious and her advice is brilliant. I particularly loved the sheer number of museums (virtual, physical and somewhere in between) she highlighted throughout her work. Immediately after reading I checked out Virmuse and am excited to watch the platform grow and expand. Her inclusion of online and virtual exhibits allows the reader to consider the place of the museum in a modern world.

I loved reading Beyond The Halls and am so thankful for the gifted copy. This a book everyone should read; it'll help open your eyes to the joy of museums. It's a book that's incredibly hard to review as your response will differ greatly and it's supposed to be an experience. I hope you pick it up and fall in love with museum's all over again like I have.

An incredible reminder of museums’ legacy and potential

As an avid museum lover myself, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the thoughtful and nuanced way in which Finklea engaged with the subject matter. The book was immensely informative, but also conversational. I didn’t feel like Finklea was talking at me, but with me to navigate my interests and concerns. I also really appreciated the personal stories throughout Beyond the Halls too. These narratives really fortified the fact that museums are not purely localized in physical or digital locations. Rather, they carry lessons that are integral to multiple facets of our lives, quite literally beyond the halls. (I couldn’t resist making the title reference...)

Interesting guide, on learning to appreciate, understand, value and the pleasure of visiting museums. I have always loved museums. My first memory, The Bishop Museum and The Polynesian Cultural Center, in Hawaii. As a child it made history come alive. Visiting both many times with my parents and school field trips. The Smithsonian Institute Museums, The Holocaust Museum, Monticello, Gettysburg, Pearl Harbor, Victorian Mansions, Plantations and Art Museums bring awe, tears and appreciation that Museums exist and must be preserved. I was expecting to see a book full of pictures showcasing Museums from all over the world, there are only a few. Recommend this book. I won this book from Goodreads and the Author Mackenzie Finklea. Thank you.

Goodreads giveaway winner:

First, it is clear the author absolutely loves museums. It really tries to hammer down that museums are for everyone and previous knowledge is not necessary to enjoy.

While I understood there was a lot of work to create a collection, it was nice to get a behind-the-scenes look on what went into putting it all together.

I appreciate that the museums are always looking for new and exciting ways to expand their horizons. It gave me a new perspective on the experience. I will be asking questions like "Why did they choose to display it like so?" or "what are they doing to be inclusive?" in the future.

This book is a great travel companion as you plan your itinerary to visit museums (in person or virtually) in any state or country. The author provides fresh insight and new ideas on interacting with the exhibits in a museum. The author also incorporates person antidotes that put the reader at ease and encourages the reader to really take in the museum experience and not just see it as checking off a place to visit while on vacation.
It was a fun easy read!

As a museum lover, this book was so interesting! I learned so much about the history of museums, what goes into keeping them running, and issues with colonialism and stolen artifacts—that part was most intriguing and really made me think.

I’m so grateful that Mackenzie sent a copy of her book to me. Though I was gifted the book, this review and these words are completely my own.

An enthusiastic endorsement of museums and their contexts. A great primer for anyone who wants to learn more about museums and their place and impact on society. Touches on a lot of conversations that are happening in the field (repatriation, modernization, accessibility, authority, etc)

Good but thin

This is really Mackenzie's personal journey. As such, it has much enthusiasm about her discoveries, but not a lot of depth. Still, she is young and I would expect much more out of her next endeavor.
