If there was one thing I’d learned over the last few months, it was that absolutely nothing lasted forever.
Which was probably why I’d been so surprised when Hunter announced he was staying in Portland. I couldn’t help but think, and hope, that it had something to do with me, a forty-year-old divorcee who was half witch and half fae.
Or maybe that was just a pipe dream.
Either way, a new hunk isn’t the only thing that’s changed in my life within the last forty-eight hours. For starters, I freed an elf from prison based solely on the fact that he knew my grandfather’s name. And then that elf promptly had some sort of magical heart attack, leaving me to wonder just what the heck is going on in the world of the fae.
I won’t have to wait too long to get answers, though. In fact, they’re coming at me more quickly than I can even think.
I had to kinda binge these, being a woman of a certain age myself, I was very much impressed. Ms. Chase manages to combine a romance, paranormal fantasy, a mystery and a coming into your true self realization all into a really riveting story.
I am so feelin' the love for this series, I can't wait for the next one.
I’ve been screaming at work for over 5 hours!! Like legit screaming at my desk. It got so bad I was walking around and pacing during a meeting. There’s no reason for a book to be this action packed and funny at the same dang time. I have of course downloaded book 5 because well duh !! This is the year of the series so I am giving all of them a whirl.
It was such a freaking good book I had to do a side by side. This allowed ya girl to listen and highlight at the same time !! I can’t wait to see what this team of loons will do next.
Shannon might actually start believing she has a hea in her life lol but I get her wariness after everything she has been to he really seems to good to be true but oh it’s going to be a fun ride to see what happens from here out...
I like the books, the story is interesting but.... its too fast paced, maybe because they're so short? There's no build up, no depth, its just one headlong rush into danger totally unprepared after another. And i do NOT like Shannon. She's impulsive, unobservant, headstrong, and stupid. She gets mad because she's told to shush... when she should already know to be quiet to avoid anyone hearing her because she's sneaking around anyway. Ummm really you're gonna go off on someone who's trying to keep you AND themselves safe? She's also very selfish and self centered... She does not deserve poor Hunter. I think IF Shannon grew up and acted like a 40 year old former (successful?) DA instead of a hormonal teenager who can't think before she leaps the books would be really good. Instead its slightly over mediocre.
I really don't know how to rate this. I'm already done with the 4th book and a lot has happended in the story, and yes, the story is captivating enough that I want to continue reading..... but I really do not like Shannon. Sometimes she's ditzy stupid, them childish and stubborn...... Also, she is supposed to be this powerful hybrid but she is constantly the damsel in distress looking for help from Hunter and Mom and Grandma and Marcella and whoever else is around her. I mean if she is supposed to be a prowerful being then she needs to be that by the time we are in the 4th book. At times it's too long winded in her head. So much unnecessary thoughts....... mostly just ramblings.... space fillers at most. For example the whole thing with the ladies getting sushi and eating together.... ramblings. True enough she does come through when it's most hopeless but still.... Oh well.... still trying to figure this out.
Stopping this series here. I’ve previously read some midlife genre books and found few with intelligent heroines who actually behaved age appropriately; with intelligence, experience and a soupçon of caution/strategy/situational awareness.
Whilst I enjoy the supporting characters very much, I do NOT like Shannon at all. For a recently hot shot DA, she has limited critical thinking skills, essentially zero impulse control and is too self centred by half.
Her total unpreparedness for impromptu travelling anywhere despite knowing the possibility was there sent me crazy. I don’t camp and I still know it takes 5mins to throw some essentials in a tote bag to carry around in case that situation presents itself. She behaves like a hormonal teenager not a woman of 40 who’s earned her stripes and laugh lines.
Perhaps strangely, I also expected her to have a better grasp of her magic now rather than it remain largely deus ex machina.
From a story perspective, I enjoy the elements of it and the overall arc is one that interests, though find the books too short for satisfaction. Then again, I expect they’d be even shorter if Shannon’s internal ramblings were deservedly edited.

Shannon is discovering her remarkable powers all the time. Hunter and Shannon finally got together in a romantic way, but with a few bumps. In a move to assert his independence, Hunter's first case as a PI is to find out about a witch's wife who disappeared. The wife has an interesting past and origin… This adventure was very interesting. Shannon is seeing several portals to the fae world and after her curiosity finally gets to her, she decides to jump in, with Hunter right behind her. This story is intense and riveting. It got the heart going more than once. It also made me laugh. I am enjoying this series.
Shannon's powers have grown, but she continues to have issues with consistency and calling them on demand. On the bright side, Hunter is sticking around. Shannon is a conflicted yet compelling character. Her background and rejection by divorce have triggered feelings of insecurity and self doubt. She doesn't know if Hunter is really into her even though he has come through for her on many occasions. Will they be able to rescue his client's wife? I like the action, humor and romance. I look forward to the next book.
read books in order. another fun read, discovery of what you have powers you never knew. your mom and grandmother hid the " power gene" possibility from you. When your trying to get control of them.... your in the middle of meopause....your friends, frenimes, allies and enemies are... trying to get divorced fron your lying-cheating-no account husband you hope very soon to be ex... you jump into a portal a.k.a "veil"without thinking how to .... sorry no spoilers hold on to your Kindle!! your in for a twisted, mystery, plots within plots... ride!! a must read!
Shannon and Hunter finally together , yay! Slipping into the veil into the fae world to help Hunter solve his first case as a PI is even better. Solving the case and restoring her family with her missing grandfather is an added bonus of that trip across the veil. Can't wait to read on and see the new family dynamic and the fight for the fae world and the halflings.
Hunter decided to become a magical P.I. He brings Shannon along to the consultation. And the adventure begins. They try to find a missing wife of a male witch. Shannon keeps seeing the veil to Faerie. In a moment of spontaneity she jumps through it.

I enjoyed getting to know the characters. They seem like a group of people I would love to hang out with. It was fun read to escape the day to day stressors. Especially now, during a pandemic. I would recommend to anyone looking escape reality for a while.
Excellent characters that pull you in... I’m eager to see what happens next. I like the pace and plot twists and the subtle sexual tension between a Hunter and Samantha without the blatant over the top graphics.
This series is well worth your time and it won't take much time to read it. I've read the first 4 books in one evening. The story is fast paced, full of action sarcasm, and snark There are a lot of typos but the story makes up for them.
Not my favorite of the series so far, but a very necessary part for the story to continue. I'm excited to see where it all goes from here and excited that Adora and Laslow have reconnected. I hope to have more of Magda in the rest of the series.

Shannon's still trying to learn her magic. Shannon and Hunter go through the veil to the land of the fae, to find a missing woman. Finding few answers and more questions. Every book gets better in this series. Happy for now.
