There was a time in Detective Eagle Woodard’s life that he would like to forget, but Eagle’s past catches up with him and it’s threatening to destroy everything and everyone he holds dear.
Dr. Adam Coulter is recovering from a cancer diagnosis and Adam and Eagle’s relationship is stronger than ever, but the continued disappearance of their son, Michael, overshadows their happiness. A new threat appears in the form of a man Detective Eagle Woodard thought dead. Sergeant Dean Kessler aka ‘The Viking’ is on a mission to destroy his old Black Ops team mate. Secrets held in silence by Eagle for over a decade come to the surface, threatening his relationship with Adam and with Eagle’s family.
Not only is The Viking after Eagle, but when Dean Kessler finds his younger brother is in Albuquerque, he becomes a target for his older brother’s revenge as well. Eagle wants to deal with Dean on his own, but the people who care for Eagle the most aren’t about to let him do this by himself.
The question is, will Eagle be able to keep the worst part of himself locked away or will he need ‘The Skinwalker’ to help him defeat ‘The Viking’?
AUTHOR'S NOTE: This book begins about six months after the end of Book 2 in the Coulter/Woodard series. This is the third planned book in the Coulter/Woodard series. No others are planned at this time, but who knows if the muse will strike. There are secondary characters who might need to have their stories told, but if they do, then the stories will be standalone novels.
PLEASE NOTE: This story contains some scenes of BDSM, drug abuse, and violent death. If these are triggers for you, this book may not be for you.

Rating: 3.5 stars
After the events in book 2, Eagle and Adam’s relationship has gone from strength to strength. Adam is recovering from his battle with cancer however they are both still troubled by the disappearance of their son, Michael. Things take a much darker turn when a man from Eagle’s past returns. The Viking – Sergeant Dean Kessler – is killing all his former black ops teammates and their families. He has set his sights on Eagle next. Eagle, whilst battling his own demons, must find the strength to protect himself and those he loves, whilst also ensuring that he does not lose himself in the process.
This series always has me scratching my head about what rating to give it. As with Books 1 and 2 there are parts I enjoyed and parts that I didn’t so much.
Starting with the parts I liked. The premise for book 3 differed a lot from the previous books in the series. The stakes were higher and it made for a gripping reading. The character of the Viking is an extremely disturbed and sadistic individual who presented a very credible and dangerous threat to the protagonists. At one point it could have gone either way with who was ultimately going to survive and the final confrontation keeps the reader on a knife-edge up until the last second. I liked the role that Adam played in this final confrontation. It was completely unexpected and I don’t think any of the other characters saw it coming either! The writing has continued to improve although there was some info dump in places that would have been better shown to the reader rather than told.
I didn’t like the continued additional drama. The novel, like the last one, would have benefitted from having a lot of this cut out. It would have made a sharper and more thrilling read if it was less complicated. Also I still had trouble keeping track of how all the relationships fitted together. Some of this was getting a little ridiculous by the time I reached the end (who would be happy that their husband slept with their sister/niece? just to get them pregnant? There are clinics for that nowadays and it would be a far less complicated solution too!).
So yes this was another mixed bag for me. This is now the end of the series. There are going to be further books featuring the supporting characters but I am undecided whether or not I would read them.
Eagle and Adam have faced many challenges. This is the last book in the series and the author apparently felt she needed to give her readers a reason to yell obscenities at her. (I didn’t because it would of scared my cats, but I really, really wanted too).
I would probably call this a dark series but the humor of the characters kept it light enough to offset the blood and guts exposed in the books. At times the violence was repelling, but still compelling to read.
I’m giving this book 5 stars for several reasons. The violence was horrific in places but it never felt out of place. I found the MC’s to be very true to their backstory and although parts of their pasts were horrifying they remained, at heart, good men. The underlying current of family throughout the book (and series) always felt real.
The triggers in the book are numerous. Believe the authors warnings. That said, I enjoyed the series very much.

a great finale for this series.. it was wonderfully written.. amazing characters. so much fun and fast paced.. sexy and curious.. emotional and made me smile. i loved it
A satisfying conclusion to the Coulter/Woodard trilogy. Intense, action driven story with plenty of surprises. Most of the loose ends from the previous two books were tied up. An excellent read.
Adam and Eagle have been through hell, Adam always seems to get the worst of it though. If you haven't read the other two books yet, go read them first. This book is a continuation. The story was told by multiple POVs which I enjoy. At times there were issues with the writer confusing who was speaking or thinking. That would throw me off, but wasn't a deal breaker for me. There is a lot of moving parts in this book. While there's one main goal, everyone has there own thoughts, opinions, and plans for how to achieve this goal. If you are sensitive about violence, sexual assault, drug/alcohol abuse, then I wouldn't suggest reading this. If you don't have triggers, then this could be an interesting read for you. The MCs are very messed up characters, but you will still want the best for them. I wanted their marriage to succeed, for them to find a healthy, happy, safe, loving future for themselves. I didn't like some of the things that were revealed about them, but it didn't change my mind on hoping they survive and become better. I liked knowing the side characters had all found themselves partners, I was hoping that those couples would end up together. This book is far from being perfectly written, but if you can over look the errors, you may just enjoy this final book about Adam and Eagle.
If I could give this book more than 5 stars, I would. Nightway Chant has to be one of the most intense psychological thrillers that I have ever read. There were times where I had to get up and walk away because I was so on edge. There are scenes of violence - both sexual and physical - and so this book may not be for you but I thought it brilliant. Dean is the killer and he wants his revenge. He wants to kill all the members of his old unit, which includes Eagle and Adam. What happens next is a game of who is going to kill first and who is going to survive. I can't say anything more on the subject because I really don't want to give anything away. There are three books in this series and they must be read in order to get the full impact of the story. Nightway Chant is also a love story. Eagle has loved Adam since they were children and, after a number of failed marriages, Adam now knows who the love of his life is. They have overcome so much but this final book could be the one where they are torn apart. I was given a copy of this book in return for an honest review but I would have bought the book anyway because I really wanted to know what happened. Highly recommended but please read the warnings before you start the story. I will be reading more books by M.J. Calabrese.
There are few words to describe the suspense, action, mystery, romance .... in short the book as a whole! I read all 3 books in 24 hours. Yes, that’s how good I find them. Enough to say awake until 11 a.m. the next day! Okay, I am aware its better to say sleep was not an option until I started the 3rd book and life intruded in my “Mountainway Chant bubble”.
The interlacing of the POV of the characters is seamless. M.J. Calabrese, this is “Golden Buzzer” worthy. Sharing your experiences et al and words is appreciated. This book is an ongoing untwining of surprises, intrigue and goodies and should not be missed.
This is definitely a worthy second, third and ongoing reread in my library. Yep, the work and love that went into these books should be devoured, savoured and then taken in bits; then start all over again.
I take my leave. My fellow voracious readers with appreciation of “such art” this arrow is in the quiver; take a chance it will surely hit “that spot” .
I probably should have stopped at book 2, but I knew this was a completed trilogy, and I just had to know how everything got wrapped up.
Unfortunately, the characters I met from book were nearly completely gone. The exaggerated personality adjustment from book 2 is even more pronounced in book 3. And on top of that, we learn even more horrible things about people who are supposed to be the good guys. Why? Families are in tatters, with only an idealized hint that they will be fine sometime down the road. No one escaped this story without being a victim of sexual violence at some point in their life. I don't think Eagle or Adam are better off. Everyone is broken at the end.
I don't know. Am I glad that the big bad was eventually caught? Yes. Of course. But I think the mystery/crime/investigation suffered under the weight of chaos, and the romance suffered because the couple never seemed to be on the same page.
Whew!!! I was sweating through parts of this book. What a MAGNIFICENT ending for this trilogy. I enjoyed the story between Adam and Eagle. You gave them such depth and flaws. You made these men as real as possible and I love that in characters. Life is not all wine and roses. I was thrilled to see Javi Duran in this story. I love Rain Carrington and think she is overlooked and under appreciated for her writing. To know her is to love her. I loved the insight you gave at the end of this story about the characters and your motivation. I love when I find a new to me Author. Your writing is unique. Your characters are fascinating and your style is all yours. Thank You for sharing a great escape. I'm looking forward to what's next. CONGRATULATIONS ON 30 YEARS!!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK AND THIS INCREDIBLE TRILOGY!!!!!!
I’m so sorry to see this series end. I loved it so hard!! So many twists and turns in it. Adam and Eagle are together and stronger than ever, but someone from Eagles past has resurfaced. Someone who was supposed to have died and he is out for revenge. He’s called the Viking and he’s insane, he’s also Dean Kessler’s brother. There are a lot of triggers in this story! Take heed to the authors warning. This was a phenomenal story! I’m going to miss Eagle and Adam; I’m hoping they pop up in another story or even start talking again. Extremely well written!! I am voluntarily leaving a review form an ARC that I received. My reviews are solely based on my thoughts and opinions.
I’m suffering withdrawal symptoms. This absolutely brilliant trilogy is over and there is nothing finished for about its secondary characters for me to read yet. I hate leaving characters I’ve grown to love. Of course I’ve done the next best thing and bought the first book of the next series the author is writing and while I expect to enjoy it too, it’s not same thing as reading on about established characters. I do however thoroughly recommend this series but be warned- It’s very addictive.
I love the new addition tot he Coulter & Woodard series. It seems like Eagle and Adam can never catch a break. The book is exciting, action-packed, mystery, a crazy ex, drug and sexual abuse and once I start reading it I couldn't put it down. It has point of views from all the main characters and the book will have your attention from start to finish and I'm looking forward to the next book in this series.
Disturbing stories that wouldn’t let me stop reading.
This is a story that brings you up and then drops you into another traumatic incident. It seems like every time you can stop and take a breath something else happens. Adam usually ends up physically hurt and Eagle emotionally hurt, but they aren’t the only ones. There’s Rick and Michael and other family members who get more than bumps and bruises both physically and emotionally. And so far a HEA/ HFN
I've loved these wonderfully complex characters since book one and I'm sorry to see them go, Adam and Eagle have been fighting for their happy ending from the beginning and this time is no different. All the twists and turns kept me glued to my tablet until the very end, a fantastic end to their journey.
This review is for the 3 Coulter and Woodard books, because you have to read the whole trilogy. The last book is by far the best, with twists and turns I didn't see coming, including the author's notes at the end. At times, it bothered me that I was enjoying the books and characters so much. To say anything more would be spoilers. Highly recommend this series!
Really enjoyed this book. Good finish to the series. I did feel a little blindsided by the relationship dynamics but I guess I just missed the hints in previous books. Given I was listening on audio while working it's entirely possible. Regardless felt like it was a good ending.
