Torren Taylor has a gorilla problem. The birthmark on his back says he is supposed to be the new Kong, but he wants nothing to do with his people. Shunning their traditions means his silverback is out of control and on a one-way track to crazy-town. He accepted his shortened life a long time ago, but right now all he wants to do is live long enough to for a couple last bucket list items. When a rare beauty shows up at his door and offers to keep his animal steady for two hundred bucks a week, well, he’s mighty tempted to pay to prolong his life. Especially if it means spending time with Candace, who seems to have a knack for calming dominant men. She’s a good girl gone bad, and he wants to corrupt her even further. But something’s brewing against his crew, and drawing her in closer will put her at risk. And now Torren is torn on one important decision: be selfish and live longer, or shorten Candace’s life with the danger building around the Sons of Beasts.
Candace Sumner needs a change. She’s back in Foxburg paying off big debts and taking desperate measures to do so. She had to give up her dreams to come back to her hometown, and now she wants a break from the monotony. And maybe a friend or two wouldn’t hurt either. An offer to keep a local silverback shifter steady sounds like an adventure, but when she sees Torren for the first time, her plans at aloofness are squashed. He is the type of man who is the perfect combination of sweet and deadly that could finally make her feel safe in her life. Too bad he’s going crazy, and his crew could go down in flames at any second.
Candace wanted an adventure, but she didn’t bargain for love, betrayal, and a group of the worst-best friends a shifter like her could ask for.
Content Warning: Explicit love scenes, naughty language, and piles of sexy shifter secrets. Intended for mature audiences.
T.S. Joyce is devoted to bringing hot shifter romances to readers. Hungry alpha males are her calling card, and the wilder the men, the more she'll make them pour their hearts out. She werebear swears there'll be no swooning heroines in her books. It takes tough-as-nails women to handle the shifters of Bear Valley.
She lives in a tiny town, outside of a tiny city, and devotes her life to writing big stories. Foodie, bear whisperer, ninja, thief of tiny bottles of awesome smelling hotel shampoo, nap connoisseur, movie fanatic, and zombie slayer, and most of this bio is true.
Bear Shifters? Check Smoldering Alpha Hotness? Double Check Sexy Scenes? Fasten up your girdles, ladies and gents, it's gonna to be a wild ride.
Normally TS Joyce is one of my favorites but the last few books I've read have been a little all over the place. One book will be amazing and the next is okay. Maybe she's explored this world and these characters so thoroughly that it may be time to move on.
The Modjo - The Chemistry is what's missing for me. I don't find myself getting the butterflies or excited for these characters to come together- these characters are too stressed out to give me the lady Boner I long for. Their lives are bleak and borderline destitute... I can see why they're not intially looking for love when they run into their mate.
They live in shanties eating off of paper plates and broken chairs - of course no one is getting laid under those conditions. Stripping to pay medical bills for a deceased relative. Yeah right! The debt goes away with his death unless you co-signed his bills lol -- so that was a stretch.
The last thing I'll say --- a lot of these characters are products of former couples in the preceding series (Harpers Mountains, Gray Backs, Boarlanders etc.)
So these couples in the new series parents stories have been told. **Stay with my logic here* They were love stories where two people who came from very fucked up backgrounds found each other - completed one another , got married, and had kids. So why are these new kids in the new stories so FUCKED up lol. Didn't they come from loving homes? Lol
*end tirade*
With a heavy heart I give this less than 5 stars.
I must say I'm still ridiculously intrigued to see what happens with the Alpha Vyr in Book 3. I can't wait til it comes out next month.
This was perfect. I'm in love with Candace and Torren. And Nox is hilarious. And that dragon. It was totally safe and romantic and funny and quick. I'm in love.
Can't wait for the next book with Vyr! This will be epic.
This one was interesting in a couple of ways. First off I really liked the pairing between Candace and Torren. I wasn't sure at first, but soon you realized that Candace was good for Torren. She seemed to like his brand of crazy and could manage his gorilla. I loved how she treated and reasoned with the animal and got him to see how he was hurting Torren, this seemed to calm things down for him.
The other part of this one that was really interesting was towards the end. I loved how they all came together as a crew, how they did what was needed to protect Vry and then later how Vry let them all know he needed them. I can't imagine all the crazy that is going to happen next!
I buy all her books on release day but dont always get to them for a couple weeks or more. This time I just seemed so busy and another of her books released before I got to this one sooo I made TIME to get this read! Ha. Onto my review!
I loved Torren and Candace. Ohh I laughed and cried as usual. I LOVE the banter between Nox, Torren, and Vyr. Cracked me up. They are sooo f'ed up but damn they are funny going through their shit! I think they have to be or they would seriously go crazy. Anyways, Candace A.K.A. Cinnamon is an exotic dancer trying to pay off some debts as fast as she can. She's got her own struggles and well when Nox approaches her with his "deal" she jumps at the chance to make more money. When Torren finds out he's pretty livid and wants nothing to do with her. He's mean and pushes her away but its something she catches onto real quick. She refuses to let him go. I loved her strength and her tenacity to not give up. Torren thinks he's beyond saving to the point where he wants Vyr to put him down. Which is a possibility cause you know he's the Red Dragon. We learn all sorts of interesting things but I am not spoiling it all. Just a little. Can Candace save Torren and can they accept each other as they are? What will the future of the Red Dragon be? We learn some painful things about Vyr too. The conversations between Torren and Candace just sooo sweet it made me cry! Cant wait to read the next! XO
For me this was a bridge book. I really didnt care much for Torren or Candace, but I'm invested in Vyr. The ending (involving Vyr) broke my heart. I need book 3 now!
So, I liked the first book, but this book was so much better. I couldn’t wait to see how Torren’s book was going to play out, and believe me, it did not disappoint.
Now that the Sons of Beasts crew has been formed Torren, Vyr, and Nox all have a bond that none of them like to talk about, but they like to pick on each other about it. Add in Nevada, the feisty like fox, and this crew is beyond crazy, but they are also loving and loyal. Although the bonds have been formed, Torren is still fighting with the beast inside of him. He’s meant to be the next Kong, but he doesn’t want that destiny. He wants to pave his own way. Good thing Candace Sumner is ready to show him just how dedicated that she can be.
The past few years for Candace have been rough. Now, she finds herself back in Foxburg, but she still can’t seem to find her way out of the rut she’s in. She’s tired of being lonely, so when she approaches Nevada, she finally feels like she might be able to make a friend. What she wasn’t expecting was Torren Taylor. He is about to turn her whole world upside down, but can she hang on for the wild and crazy ride?
I really loved not only Torren, but the beast inside of him as well. Watching these strong and dominant men being brought back down by the loves they never knew they needed is amazing to see. Candace and Torren are perfect together in every way. I also love how the secondary characters play a huge role throughout the series. Now, it’s time for the Red Dragon, and he is the one I’ve been waiting on!!!!
It deepens the mystery that is Vyr and the current state of shifter and human government relations. It feels like genetic cleansing of the type explored in Dark Kane's story and similar manipulation by Damon. Torren was selfless in his desire to protect Vyr and Candace was his equal. Both were being damaged because of that selflessness when they were separate, but together they were able to continue and become stronger. FYI ...I truly hate gorilla shifter culture. The hospital scene at the end was very emotional. The way T.S. Joyce wrote it was perfect and believable. I'm anxious for the conclusion of this trilogy. It's probably the most deeply emotional and thoughtful of all the series she's written, in my opinion. Oh, polar bears...I'm hating on them as well. Well worth the the time to read.
Gosh, just when I think I can't love her books anymore she bring out this.
For a short shifter romance, these books give me everything I want and need. I love the humour, the banter and bickering and the whole disfunctional family vibe they have going on. I feel connected, I'm totally immersed into this word and I believe every emotion. It gives me all the feels. I love the way this author spins her tails with her own unique stamp, I could tell her book regardless of if her name is on the pages and that right there is a testament of how good she is.
I'm writing this review having already read Vyr's story because I'm a hot mess who's way behind on her reviews but I can tell you now that she didn't disappoint there either.
Another incredible read in this series! Can’t wait for Son of Dragon. Well written, engaging, and filled with plenty of angst & smexy times, this book is a page-turner from start to finish. Nicely done!
The dialogue is shit. People talk for no reason, at a thousand miles per hour, saying nothing that makes any sense. Yes, I didn’t read the previous book so I don’t know the characters but it still shouldn’t be like this. DNF 21%
They got together quickly but it worked for them...and me. 😊 This was definitely a more serious book and that was perfect for the situation. (Except when Nox was on page, of course. 😂) I can't wait for Vyr's book.
I really liked this book, I love the characters and watching how they've developed a little bit since the last book. I love the humour in the book and how each character is different and unique in their own way. However there was just stuff in this book that stopped me from loving it, which is disappointing.
The story is way too fast which is disappointing because I waited a month for it to come out. Right brief rundown of what happens, Candace and Torren meet under weird circumstances but they realise they are attracted to one another but Torren puts a stop to it, ugh. Couple of days later, Torren sees Candace in the strip club where she works and then is suddenly like let's give this relationship thing a go. Bam she sees him fight accepts his messed up gorilla and boom mates. Waaaaay too fast it just all needed to slow down and take a seat. I just felt like they didn't really know each other before they became mates, they just needed to sit down and chat. Don't let that put you off from reading it though because even though it was fast paced, it was still sweet and the characters are just amazing.
Torren is so sweet and caring of Candace just melts my little heart. It's so sad to watch him struggle with his gorilla, what makes it even sadder is that he can't help it because HavoK (his gorilla) literally takes control and Torren can't do anything. Torren is just so sweet with his sister and how much he loves her. However why is Torren's gorilla messed up? this wasn't really explained so that just annoyed me and why didn't his father help him.
Candace, she's so awesome I love the fact she isn't weak and that she doesn't let anyone talk shit to her. I love the way she accepts and heals Torren's messed up gorilla, it was really sweet to watch the change taking place.
Finally, come on TS Joyce when are we going to meet more of the children from Damons mountains, I NEED it, I need to know more about them and what happened to them.
Overall, the book is a really good read and the characters are just amazing and I literally can't wait for the next book.
T.S. Joyce can do no wrong. I'm in love with this book. Son of Kong was funny but oh so incredibly sexy.
Torren is supposed to be the next Kong, but like his dad he shunned his responsibility. And after everything that happened in Covington, he has come to terms of his impending end. Until Candace, the sexy stripper/ tiger shifter who came into his life and turned everything upside down. But with the cops breathing down his crews neck, his animal is getting more out of control.
This one seemed a little rushed and not enough character development ...I didn't really feel the connection between Torren and Candace and couldn't get into their story. It wasn't bad but I will read the next in the series.
Torren’s silverback is out of control, or more like in control far too often. Like his father before him, Torren has the birthmark and the legacy of becoming “Kong” the male of a large family group… a dubious “honor” he wants nothing to do with as he hates almost all gorilla shifters. Yet he cannot take the easy way out of his situation for he is the one tie his best friend and Alpha Vyr has to remain somewhat in control of his badass dragon. Torren is literally being torn apart and the only way to keep control, and keep a promise is to fight anyone who will take him on. His totally crazy, obnoxious friend Nox has a plan… it didn’t work exactly as intended, but it did bring two mates together.
Candace had once had a very good life. All of that changed when her father became ill. Although it’s unusual for a shifter to become sick but when they do, much like humans, the costs are beyond skyrocketing for shifters cannot have health insurance. Now after her dad’s death, Candace is paying off loans she took out and his medical bills. She gets an unusual job offer and while she most likely won’t take it, she’s still intrigued. Little did she know that an invitation to dinner at a run down mansion with a horny lonely swan in the pond and some really crazy shifters would lead her to her mate.
Son of Kong is extremely fast paced… and leads us firmly into the events that will come in Son of the Dragon, Vyr’s story. With an interesting take on the settling that mates have on each other in Candace and Torren’s story we also see how friends anchor friends, and mates solidify those connections. I adored Candace, she’s tough and a bit crazy herself. She might be down right now, but she’s got fire and strength that even she didn’t know about. She will be an anchor in this crew, one that’s desperately needed. Torren is a wounded soul, close to the edge of ever coming back again. He and Candace fit each other so perfectly… and it’s easy to see how quickly she becomes a part of this ragtag crew.
The sacrifices and the glimpses we get at the end of Son of Kong only make me look forward to the next story even more than usual. With unexpected development, new enemies to fight and out of control shifters, this story is intense, sexy and an amazing addition to the series that make up Damon’s Mountains Universe. I’d recommend this story and the entire set of series to any Paranormal Romance or Shifter Romance reader.
I read this title through my Kindle Unlimited subscription.
When this book went live I squealed like a stuffed pig and did a happy dance. I had been (im)patiently waiting for this book to release since T.S told us we were getting a Son of Kong book. My greedy self-wanted it the moment she first mentioned she was writing it. Every day I went and checked her social media pages. Just wanting a glimpse of where she was with this bad boy. I knew T.S. Joyce was making it perfect for us.
And let me tell you, folks! SHE DID NOT LET US DOWN! Holy MAC. This book was just perfect!! I have never loved an alpha like this before. I mean I adore all T.S. sexy beast. I have read all but a couple. They all have that one thing about them you just want to fix and take care of for them. But Torren Taylor shredded me. That man carried so much on his shoulders that it was driving his gorilla mad.
The leading lady Candace Sumner did not let us down either. She had been through a tough time and needed to find someone to help her settle her beast as well. The chemistry between Torren and Candace was great to watch. Every time she said "rude" to him I snickered.
The dynamic of this book was deep. It was based around Torren and Candace Sumner and how they needed one another to settle and help their beasts. But T.S. gave us so many layers in this beautiful book that in actuality you were getting pieces of Vyr, Nox, and Nevada in there that you needed to pay attention to. So much played out in that last 25% of this book that I will be rereading it just to make sure I caught everything T.S. dropped in this bad boy. I did growl at ALPHA (TS) a little bit. SHHH.... I still love her long time.
The ending of this book will make anyone have grabby hands for Vry's book that drops in September. I need it to be September.
So, if you have not decided yet if you want to read this book. The answer is YES you do. I do recommend you read The Son of the Cursed bear so you can fall in love with Nox in book one. He has a big part in this book that will have you loving him all over again.
TS I loved Candice so much but I still do not think anyone can top Ms. Willa. hehe.
Candace is a tiger shifter who works in a strip club to pay off her deceased father's medical bills, Torren is a gorilla shifter who fights for money, he needs to fight to keep his shifter part of him stated. the shifter part of him is slowly getting out of control, he needs as all gorilla shifter needs a family group, he was born to be the leader, to breed with many many females, but like his father before him, he doesn't want that life, so he leaves, he's in a clan made up with his two childhood friends, Candace needs more money than she can get at the strip club and a chance meeting with Torrens friend Nox, it's arranged that she would have sex with Torren for money, after meeting though it's clear that they both need each other, both their shifter parts needs help that only the other one can give to them, as in every T.S.Joyce books there are forces out there that want to split up the clan they have made, I mean who would have thought that a dragon shifter, a grizzly bear shifter, a fox shifter, a gorilla shifter and a tiger shifter would join up and make a clan, and have it work for them, each of them with issues but they understand each other, and when something or someone wants to break up this group of misfits, well they better be warned, there maybe trouble ahead (yes I sang that in my head, did you?) I brought and downloaded the three books at the same time, I knew that I would end up reading them again and again, I loved this book and I'm really looking forward to reading the next one, I woke up this morning in pain and decided that I would spend the day laying on top of the bed reading, only being disturbed once a hour or so with my husband bringing me a cuppa tea, it's now almost midnight and I've just finished this book and I'm about to start the next one, so settle down, get comfy and enjoy, I do hope you love this book as much as I have done, Don't forget after you finish reading to write a short review, not only does it help the author, it also helps bring new readers to the amazing books written by the extremely talented T.S.Joyce. ENJOY !!!
I seriously don't know how T.S. Joyce does it. I've been reading all of the various series that connect these characters together since Damon's Mountains with the saw bears series and it just keeps getting better and better! That's seriously hard to do. Since book 2 of saw bears and onward I'm seriously flabbergasted by the dialogue used in the books. T.S. comes up with some crazy, ridiculous and insanely hilarious sentences that I have to stop myself from laughing out loud and I definitely repeat those sentences a few times cause it's just so different and awesome!
This book was great. I love how she mixes humor with a lot of serious issues. She balances it really well. And I love the kind of messages she sends out to readers; from finding the right person and not settling for less, to finding the person that will treat you right and accept you for who you are. To know that no one is perfect but that doesn't mean that you aren't awesome and lovable. You can totally be beautifully broken and that's fine. It's real and honest and gives you all the necessary feels.
I will admit this isn't one of the books that made me cry or tear up (though a few of her books have done so, I believe it's Jason's story from the Gray Backs, and definitely a few other characters in Damon's Mountains, but this novel did pull at your heart a bit.
I know I didn't give much details but seriously it's a fast read so just give it a go! Though def don't read this if you haven't at least read book 1 from this series (sons of beasts). I do suggest reading all of them starting with Damon's mountain though...trust me, totally worth it! And all books are short. Just a heads up the first book in saw bears is good but it is my least favorite out of ALL the books available in this shifter universe. So def get passed that one if you weren't feeling it and try out the second one about Kellen. Once you get to the Gray Backs series I swear, you will be laughing A WHOLE LOT.
I really enjoyed Torren and Candace story. After being set up by Nox, who thinks he has a way to settle Torren and his silverback. Torres denied the offer because no human would be able to do that. But Candace wasn't human. She marched her butt into the library to see Nevada because she was at the strip club with Nox and Torren had never called her. Candace was interested in Torren because she too was damaged, needed the money and just wanted a friend. She was a brave accepting Nevada dinner invitation thinking it was only going to be Nox, Nevada and Torren but she didn't know the Red Dragon would be there. After seeing Cancade at the club with her switch off not showing any emotions Torren fell for her and showed him Havok the silverback inside him and what he needed to do to manage him. Havoc bled other shifters. Both damaged in a way Torren and Cancade were perfect for one another. Vyr Torrens friend made it very clear after the vision he shared with Cancade that she had to save Havoc and manage him because there was trouble coming. The police and news crew and whatever else in the woods was apparently there for Torren but Cancade realized the real truth and before it was too late she new she had to get Vyr not to change. She jumped on his back while he was changing because thats what they wanted. They wanted him to shift and let the Red Dragon out to do destruction so they had a reason to kill Vyr, Torren bestfriend. Vyr changed back to his human form thats to Cancade's quick thinking and Damon Daye showing up. Damon made a deal with the law enforcement to Vyr his son serving 1 year in shifter prison for burning Covington to save Torrens sister. He went willingly with the officers but months after being in there things changed and he needed a way out.....
This is the second book in the Son of Beasts series and they are better read in order. Torren is the son of Kong. He is supposed to be the new Kong. His people want him to lead them just like his father was supposed to. But, just like his father he wants nothing to do with his people. Now his gorilla is taking his body more and more. Its like they are two separate beings, the man and the gorilla, Havok. He is living day to day. Then a beautiful girl shows up on his door step. She is willing to sleep with him and help settle his animal for money. Candace has come back to Foxburg and has lots of bills to pay off. She has never done anything like she offered to do for Torren before. But she would like an adventure and maybe a new friend or two and this could be her chance. This series is more emotional than the others I have read in the Damon’s mountain series. I think it is because I am so invested in the characters by now. These guys come from dominant out of control men and they are no different. I feel for them so much. Candance and Torren make a great couple. They find that their broken pieces fit each other perfectly. Neither is interested in changing the other or getting them to stop doing what they are doing. They understand each other like no one else. The ending is a bit of sad one but it sets up the next book perfectly. I am super excited to read the next book in this series.
I dont think I can wait til the end of September for the red dragons story I need it now!!! I absolutely love all her books I can say it enough she has equal amounts of excitement, romance, and comedy. Torren is on a downward spiral in his own words he's on a fast road to hell and all he hopes to achieve is live long enough to help his family save enough money so his sister can have her implants to fix her hearing so she can hear his voice one time before he checks out. That was the plan until the great and obnoxious but I totally love him Nox son of the cursed bear hires him a stripper that is possibly willing to have sex with him for $200 bucks a day and as crazy as it sounded Torren had to admit for some strange reason he was kind of intrigued by the idea. Candace is a dancer trying to stay a float by stripping to pay for her deceased father's medical bill's that's the only reason she even contemplates Nox's crazy offer even though she's heard of the son of Kong and he's totally hot and all but he's crazy right? Well she has been wanting to change things up lately maybe this will be just what she needs! Oh and P.P.P.S I love Mr.Diddles 😂
I loved Son of Kong, Torren. He has been battling with his gorilla for years now, and is getting to the point he is losing to his Kong, a.k.a. HAVOK
Vyr seems very aloof and perhaps cold and heartless, so I can't wait to get to know him better and see his softer side in book 3. We know the dragons have always had a difficult time managing their beast in all of TSJ books, but Vyr doesn't even seem to try. He is completely out of control and has been since he was very young. Torren was sent to play with Vyr when they were just kids, in hopes he could somehow help Vyr control the dragon, and it worked, to some extent. Since then, Torren has spent his entire life trying to prevent Vyr from burning the world to the ground. Because of that, he has given up too much, including having a family unit, which his animal requires. Havok is constantly fighting both Torren and everyone else, to maintain the beast.
While I loved both Candace and Torren, we see them both at their lowest point. It's definitely a rough story while they both struggle to pull themselves up to be better for each other as mates. Thankfully we have Ob-NOX-ious there the lighten the mood. Also, this is one of the first times we've met the animal separate from the human and I loved that scene where Candace speaks to Havok while Torren is not there. It was a good reminder that these shifters aren't just humans in animal form, they are 2 separate individuals and one is a WILD animal, with a completely separate personality, thoughts and behaviors.
