Earth is at war! The villainous Union has been steadily taking over more and more of the planet after initiating the Global Culture War. In an effort to stand its ground against the Union, the Polity turns to Dr. Weller and his team of five individuals who are gen:Lock compatible, which allows them to transfer their minds to mech suits known as Holons! 3.5/5 Stars:

I binged the entire gen:Lock first season (admittedly only eight episodes) in about a day; I loved the combination of big robot action and heartfelt, character driven story. It wasn't perfect at all times; the animation was a little choppy, and sometimes the story felt a bit rushed, but overall, the show is one of those that I will be delving back into it when season two comes out.

So imagine my surprise when I learned that DC Comics put out a limited series (7 issues) following the adventures of the gen:Lock heroes after the end of Season one. Not only did this series help bridge the gap between seasons 1 and 2, but it also provided more world-building and storytelling from the perspectives of some of my new favorite characters. So of course I had to drop everything else and power through this story!

The gen:Lock comic is a lot like the show: believable characters, awesome action, but heavily rushed to fill its short run time. I loved that every single character felt the same as they did in the show; Kazu was a bit different, less rebel and more belligerent, but overall, the characters felt right on model. I especially loved the focus on the trauma each of these young people have faced; they literally fought an evil version of one of their friends, watched someone they cared about die, and faced the horrors of war at every turn. It was nice for the writer to slow things down a touch and focus on how they each are dealing with it.

But oh the rushed feeling... Lanzing et al. did a good job constructing an interesting story that digs into new parts of this futuristic world. I liked the look at the Japanese Polity and how it differs from anywhere else in the world, but there were just some things the team didn't explain well enough. Why all of that Japanese hostility toward other Polity members? There were so many great story beats throughout this book, but very few of them were explored in their entirety. I also felt that there was a strange disconnect with Sycorax; that felt like an entirely different story that was just shoehorned into this tale.

Overall, a fun read that does manage to build on a story I really enjoyed. It could just have used a few more chapters to build out some of the story elements.

I’m not familiar with this property. And I can see how DC was attempting to get some IP beyond their core. But bust honestly this fill too packed with Details while still lacking some world building I wound need to enjoy this.

Yeah, this was good enough. Big robots, some gaming integration, and enjoyable characters.
