Hiroyuki Takei (武井宏之 Takei Hiroyuki) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime Shaman King. His brother, Hirofumi Takei (武井宏文) is also a manga-ka.
The final volume in this beloved series is the true ending for mangaka Hiroyuki Takei and it is conceptually bittersweet if anything. Everything ultimately came down to how well all these characters can convince Hao to do the right thing and it really wasn't convincing.
This volume also includes the spin-off series and nothing showcased here really made me want to visit those either.
At least fans who haven't read or revisited this series and its new ending can still check out the upcoming Netflix anime reboot. Maybe the ending there will be much more worthwhile!
This series and ending was truly a masterpiece, it may be divisive to some who cant comprehend nuanced story telling but than again thats what shaman king was always about. It was never about the battles or the powerups yeah it has a cool power system easily the best in manga but, what lied beneath it all was the introspection, the conversations of the characters how the conflicts of moral dilemma and thematic clash. The series was never really about becoming "shaman king" it was about a culture clash of a wide margin of different backgrounds and ideals coming together to decide which has the most authenticity to be realized. That of course being the titular main "antagonist hao" Hao was but a poor child who suffered abuse greatly in his pass life, and when his mother was murdered by the hands of the thieving humans it only solidified his hatred for humanity further more. Hao, we're talking about a guy who would go hell in back reincarnating himself several times to get revenge on those who killed his mother. His conviction and thinking due to his centuries of knowledge of course would only allow him to be the one true shaman king successor, not yoh who didnt even want to be the shaman king but was forced to partake in the tournament because of anna his fiance and his family, not Ren a selfish false king, not Horohoro someone with a noble wish but nowhere near as convicted and determined as hao.
All of this is necessary to understand just why this ending works. You see when Hao achieves his ultimate goal it is not out of selfishness but a flawed sense of justice so, when anna resurrects Hao's mother the very person who he loved, who's death that caused him to spiral into this genocidal hatred of humans it makes sense that she is the one to postpone him. Yes it may seem unbelievable to someone but, you're forgetting Hao was never "insane" he was still very much level headed so its understandable how the person whom he did all this for subsiding him for a brief moment would work. Its not about "power of friendship" or some illiterate nonsense like that its about owning up to mistakes and taking accountability. As Hiroyuki Takei once said "the final message of shaman king is that fighting is no good" Not to mention Hao never forgave the humans he still despises them and is only postponing there destruction if they "mess up again" which why yoh and anna leave in the finale to make sure nothing as disastrous as the past indicated occurs again.
Shaman king was never about good or evil or law and order it was merely people trying to cultivate a means to end suffering which is why the thought of "shaman king" to obtain the ultimate power, wishes that would transform ones life to a literal god drew so many worldwide to the tournament and even the multicultural fans in real life. Shaman king's unique story telling and well written characters is truly one of its greatest triumphs that will transcend time itself.
If you don't like this, you never understood what this manga is about. It's not a shonen, even if it was in Jump. A lot of it reminded me more of some seinen I read than shonen. And that's why I love it. All the older versions are beautiful (Tamao was a shocker, not gonna lie). And overall? Yeah. I recommend it. A lot And the last chap, with flowers... It get me interested.
And this was the big prologue as we followed along with the team years later and the next generation as well. It was nice and with that we that the series is over and maybe there would be a follow up manga series but for now it's all done and I am glad that the entire series was available via Kindle Unlimited so now let's go and Keep on Reading.
I have always loved comics, and I can and I have. I love comics to bits, may the comics never leave my side. I loved reading this and love reading more. You should also read what you love, and I hope you will always love them. Even though I grew up reading local Indian comics like Raj Comics, Diamond Comics, or even Manoj Comics, now's the time to catch up on international and classic comics and Graphic novels. I am on my quest to read as many comics as I just want to Keep on Reading.
Rating for the overall impression of the whole series. I loved the Osorezan Revoir volumes, thought they were the best, shipped Anna and Yoh really hard ("If you really cannot stand being in crowds...and accidentally call up an Oni, then let's run away together). The characters were freaking amazing and I seriously loved everybody (well, minus some minor characters)... everybody's background story is so beautifully written and each character has something to love about them, I swear. I find the ending amazing: and so different from the anime, which I watched when I was a child, so reading this was really emotional for me. It was also my first manga (and it had 300 chapters!) REN IS A KING AND HE SLAYS EVERYBODY WITH HIS COMEBACKS #forevermyfav
And so, Shaman King comes to a close. In regards to how it ends, I was convinced and found the epilogue heartfelt. I've been on a journey with these characters, have become fully invested in them, and it came to a bittersweet close. It's just an utter shame the volume felt padded out with an overlong advert for the sequel series, ticking the nostalgia boxes in ways which feels forced. Maybe it plays better in the actual series, but as it is, I cannot say I'm eager to try it outside of revisiting whichever characters I can.
So long, Shaman King. A much better ending than what you previously had, but it's just a shame the overwhelmingly padded material lets this volume down.
Shaman King was the first anime i watched on TV. The old anime isn’t able online anymore, at least not in Spain. When i found out that they were republishing the manga, i felt like i was 4 years old again. I spent 2 and a half years reading it, buying them and my boyfriend giving them to me as a present, because he knew how important this saga is to me. I enjoyed every second. There were some things that i would change, of course, but i love how, in the end, everything is explained with those pretty full pages. I would love to see people falling in love with Shaman King. My inner child is the happiest after all of this.
A really big letdown. As the volumes went on it felt to more and more convoluted. It even put me off from reading the spin-off series. It's a shame because the characters are well-developed.
This final volume is really just the last chapter and then extra stuff but man was it bad, time skip to showing the ending of the fight we had left off in the last volume and there was no fighting, turns out they just talk it out. Hao’s actual mom turns up out of nowhere (never to be mentioned in the story) and just knocks sense into him, everyone jokes about it cause he looks like a weak kid and then he lets everyone go…wtf. There is no way this is a classic series, I like the art and some of the characters but then they’re written horribly and then they try to do a lot but then nothing at the same time…avoid this series, I guess watch the anime cause it would be shorter than this.

So, the ending wasn't the best. I don't care enough about Hanna to want to know much about him, but I enjoyed the team as adults now. But I have so many doubts --especially about Yoh and Anna and their relationship with Hanna. But, oh well, I guess I could find out more if I really wanted to.
But I liked the way they handled Hao, I loved to see them all being so powerful and honest. Especially Yoh. And that's why I gave it 4 stars: because I liked the story and my love for the character is so massive that I simply can't not.
