In The De-Coding of Jo, Jo has recently experienced terrible trauma after the abduction and torture of her mother. She’s now dealing with nightmares and sometimes turning to other substances to help cope. One thing I really loved about this book was how this fantasy ensemble cast was dealing with current day issues many teens face. Issues of sexuality, identity and acceptance. Anxiety and mental health. With each new character that was introduced (Jo, Nisha, Zaxen, Reyes, Daphne, Flynn) I found myself falling in love with the story a little more. Jo and her friends accidentally unleash a demonic evil that has been contained beneath their school—and one by one, her classmates are possessed. I particularly loved the strong role music played in this novel, both classical and modern, and what a positive and affirming book this would be for readers of all ages.

Jo is in a quandary. Her friends Rey, Nisha, Zax are also in a quandary. Life for a modern teenager can be a quagmire that threatens to pull them down and swallow their very being; hook, line, and soul. It doesn't help that their high school sits on a portal that dark forces use to spread deception, fear, and hate. And only one thing can counter hate: love.
Author Lali Love has written a beautiful story that at first draws us in with its passion, and then, through the eyes of her characters, opens our own eyes to the vast integration of the multi-dimensions that make up our universe. Light, darkness, love, and hate are all communicated through the plasmic pulses radiating from the stars.

When I was asked to do a review for this book, it would be a vast understatement to say I was honored. Lali is such a beacon of light in the writing community and in the world that it is my absolute pleasure to sing her praises.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The De-Coding of Jo: Hall of Ignorance is wholly original, different from anything I’ve ever read, yet at the same time familiar and welcoming. There is a wisdom, a power, in Love’s words the likes of which I have never seen before. She awakens in you a renaissance of self, triggered by love and healing and acceptance.

With impeccable prose, a ravishing plot, and bewitching concepts, Love articulates a mesmerizing, incandescent world. She does a brilliant job of blending the scientific and the spiritual, the mathematical and the magical, in a beautiful, balanced whole. This book is fulfilling on so many levels. The writing is poetry. The message is powerful, resonant. The characters are rich, vivid souls clawing their way out of the dark. The story inspires us to be more than we are, to light the world, to erase our shadows with our truth. In a word, it’s spellbinding.

As a member of the LGBTQ+ community and as a sufferer of mental illness, I completely related to her beautiful, vulnerable cast. Love does an excellent job portraying her characters with such sensitivity and respect. There is a wonderful, passive diversity that is inclusive across the board. My only complaint is that I didn’t have this book when I was a teenager. I have no doubt it will fast become a hallmark of YA queer literature.

Purely Magical
Lali A. Love did a great job in this book by bringing the elements of paranormal fantasy and blending it with science fiction and magic. The result is a unique book that is different from anything I have read in the past. The author uses familiar ideas and terms to present his facts in easily relatable ways.
Her strong power of narrative and good prose gave birth to a unique and interesting world that keeps the reader glued. Lali Love presents us with rich well-developed characters—mostly spirit beings. The Decoding of Jo is a book of poetry that will inspire the readers to do more and become better version of their selves. It is more futuristic in the sense that it tends to create a picture of what the world can become if we learn to erase our dark pasts with our present light.
The story is intended for young readers. It is a very relatable story, and people like me will spend a lot of time reading these 308 pages as many times as possible. A nice literature piece that is worthy of a 5-star rating.

Audiobook review:

(Actual rating: 4.5 stars)

The De-Coding of Jo: Hall of Ignorance is a book like no other.

Featuring Jo, our heroine is a young teenage girl struggling with the trauma of her mother being kidnapped and almost killed, which is featured in her nightmares every night. Unable to sleep or find any sort of rest, Jo turns to drugs and pills to find a form of solace. Her only bright spot in her life is her friends, a group of misfits that were brought together by their love of music.

I loved every character in this book. The LGBTQ+ representation was incredible. Each of them struggled with very relatable issues like body image, addiction, abandonment, and more. One small complaint I had was their introduction. As we met each character, we were given sort of an info dump on their past and their traumas, which at times felt a bit much and I wish it had been revealed more along the way instead of telling us everything at once.

As the book goes on, Jo finds out she’s special. I won’t say too much more to avoid spoilers, but her realizations were so deep and well thought out. Love is so knowledgeable about the topics she writes and I found myself in awe of certain aspects that I never even thought of before especially the effect of music on our emotions.

As Jo journeyed to find peace and self-love, I felt like I was joining her in the process. She deals with loss, heartbreak, and so much more, and watching her learn to forgive and love everyone no matter how much evil they carried within themselves resonated deeply with me.

This book was not an easy read. There are a lot of triggers including sexual assault, self-harm, drug abuse, and death, but I found it more than worth it. This story definitely isn’t for everyone but I’m so glad I picked it up.

*I was given a free copy of this audiobook by the author and this is my honest, voluntary review.*

This is a story of the ongoing battle of Light vs Dark.

We are introduced to Jo and her friends just before they accidentally open a mysterious portal and release evil demonic parasites. As Jo learns that her Soul opted to serve the Council of Creation and therefore battle the Lord of Darkness, her friends work to come to terms with their own teenage realities regarding stress, drugs, and sexuality.

We watch Jo receive 'downloads' of the information she needs to understand life as it truly is. She and her friends work together to try to stop the parasites from doing the Dark Lord's bidding and infecting the whole school.

The book was beautifully written, but for me, at times there was so much information and metaphysical terminology, that it became difficult to stay on track. That said, this story handles these teenagers' domestic situations and friendships very well and exemplifies the power of love and acceptance.

As a writer of Light and Dark I was instantly drawn to Love’s portrayal of the concept. The Lord of Darkness and the Council of Light are truly a unique twist. Almost as unique as the school’s band!

Jo and her friends are a musically talented group of ‘outsiders’. Belonging to different high school social groups, but reliant on one another to find a place where they truly fit in. I enjoyed Love’s mention of drugs - not many novels I read are open about this topic and it is common for teens to experiment. The mention of various struggles of identity is refreshing to read. As characters learn to accept themselves for their gender identity, sexual preference, and body image, Love uses these examples to breed darkness. Ultimately, if we don’t accept ourselves and learn to forgive, then there is no room for light.

It is obvious the author has an impressive knowledge and understanding of the psychological. (I was amazed by the extent of this!) As we read about the trauma, grief, discomfort then acceptance, love, and strength we learn about the impacts moments have on others internally and how personalities adapt.

I gave this book four stars because I enjoyed the characters and their backstories, but sexual abuse is a serious topic to me and I didn’t think it was given enough room. Another way characters breed darkness isn’t through how they manage the negative emotions of envy, jealousy, pettiness, vengeful rage, but through actions. It was both eluded to and said that darkness travelled through the exchange of “liquids” and essentially abusive acts. There is even a very real moment for one of our main characters. The darkness taking advantage of people sexually, I can understand this as a very real concept, but it didn’t sit well with me - so if this is a trigger for you, be wary. Though Love touched on this briefly, I didn’t think the severity of the situation was illustrated because it’s such a huge topic to fit in one book. I kept wondering about what would happen when they ‘wake up’ and realize what happened to their bodies, or those who imposed themselves on others by the fault of darkness because surely they lost their freedom as well. By having the school/teenage life brushing it off, it felt like the author brushed it off as well. I kept reading to know if there would be justice eventually.

However, I did like Jo’s character. She is the embodiment of light! Her acceptance and promotion of light teaches us to forgive the impossible and be there for others. With her love of music, we remember the importance of our words and the impact they have on the world.

Love’s concept of light and dark was different — I can truly think of no similar example and I like that this book was so in sync with psychology. And I truly appreciated this story for touching on different character types. If you enjoy dark fantasy, the psychological understanding of things, and that group of ‘misfits’ who have the power to save the world - then I recommend this book for you!

Lali A. Love’s second book has all the magic and strife/conflict of the first book with a dose of the teenage angst found in HBO’s show Euphoria. I make the comparison to Euphoria because in this book, teenage friends work to navigate their hormones, senses of identity, and other adolescent challenges, sometimes with the aid of drugs or alcohol. On the other hand, the kids in this book also have to deal with demonic influences unlike the teens on Euphoria. So, there’s an angelic battle happening in this book, too.

Jo is the main character in this story. She is Lilac’s daughter. Jo suffers from incredible anxiety up until she accesses an angelic force that helps her heal these negative forces. She and her group of friends navigate the typical things kids do, including identity and sexuality, yet in this novel, they also carry the burden of generational trauma. I’m someone who can understand that burden. One side of my family blamed their legacy of malfunction to a fear of the Bolsheviks or religious trauma. And while events and upbringings can certainly perpetuate negativity, it is ultimately up to each person to combat negative thoughts. Even Jo faces this struggle. I love the spiritual dimension to Love’s books, but I also relate to the real struggle outlined in these pages.

Enthralling story from start to finish!

I was told to read The De-Coding of Jo by several people. I wish I’d read it sooner! I was intrigued by the title and the cover graphics, but I didn't really know what the book was going to be about until I opened it and started reading (I bought it without reading the synopsis). It feels too simplistic to say this is a ‘fantasy book’, or a work of ‘young-adult fiction’, which is how it is labelled on Amazon. I believe Lali A. Love has created a tale about Truth, Love, and Light – some lofty themes! - that would engage young and old alike. It would make an excellent classroom text, too.

I was impressed with Love’s writing style. It is as lyrical as poetry. The characters she has crafted come to life. This world they’ve inherited could easily be our own. My disbelief was suspended, and I fell in love with the journey and the spirit of these strong people, working together to make the world a better place.

I wish I’d read this book sooner, but I believe I read it at exactly the right time for my own spirit. You will feel inspired when you finish. We’ve been sleepwalking through our lives and relationships for far too long; it’s time to wake up.

I won this book in a competition that Lali hosted back in November.

From the first page I knew this book would be like nothing I had ever read before. The story was incredibly unique and engaging. The book balances teenage coming of age angst, mental health problems, and sexual identity, whilst also exploring fantasy. Lali has cleverly combined all of these aspects to create a fantastic world filled with spiritual energy, relatable characters and teenage angst. The plot has been wonderfully constructed to leave the reader guessing until the final pages.

I can promise you that this book is like nothing you've ever read before.

I’m an enormous fan of sci-fi and dark fantasy novels and this one had a little bit of both genres! I found this book to be very impressive and exciting. This book is especially for fantasy lovers.

Love this part (Hall of Ignorance) from the Ascending Angel Academy series, the story revolves around the main character, Jo, who is 16 years old. The protagonist in this book, Lilac, is the mom, and her daughter, Jo, is coping with life after Lilac was kidnapped by a demon. Because their family is simply commencing to heal from that traumatic experience. There are so many elements in this book and each and every part is wonderfully fused together. I’m really excited to determine where the author takes us within the next book.

The De-Coding of Jo is unlike anything I've ever read. Such a fresh take on spirituality, celestial beings, and light vs. dark.

The unique plot is originally what drew me in, but it was the characters that really made me want to stay. The cast is so diverse and each character brings their own struggles to the table. Teenage angst is a huge part of this book and was very realistic. A few of the topics touched upon were eating disorders, bulling, sexuality, abuse, and even physical assault. All that said, Jo was the true shining light in this book. I loved her and everything she stood for. She's the friend I wish I would've had when I was in high school!!

I really enjoyed the message here and admire the author for encouraging us all to become empowered and be our authentic selves! Well done! 4.5 Stars!

At first glance reading the blurb and seeing the cover i was intruiged. It seemed so interesting, but sadly this was not for me. I was more or less confused and bored the whole time. The story went ..but it felt bland? i didn`t get a real connection to any of the characters either.

As always my reviews are always 100% honest and my own opinions. I will try to never fully spoil a plot. This particular copy I was given access to a copy to review as part of a book tour by Love Book Tours. #LoveBookTours #LBTCrew #DecodingOfJoHallOfIgnorance #LaiALove #AscendingAngelAcademy #BookTour

I want to start by saying I feel like this is the kind of series I had been available when I was part considered a young adult. It contains a lot of elements I have grown to love, fantasy, paranormal and science fiction but does mix in hard hitting and sometimes heavy themes that many young adults experience featuring a diverse, gender inclusive teenagers struggling through their teens. I do feel though with some of the themes explored the book did seesaw between young adult or new adult since there is a lot of dark for the light to fight.

The first book in the Ascending Angels Academy series follows Jo, a sixteen year old who attends Forest Hill Academy, a preppy co-ed private school with her best friends; Nisha, Daphne, Reyes, Zaxden, and Flynn. Jo’s already stressful teenage years are plagued with debilitating nightmares after her mother had been taken hostage but thankfully returned. Things seem to change for Jo when she and her friends discover a mysterious gateway in the underground hallway of their library. Unfortunately one of Jo’s friends then released the evil that had been imprisoned in this grid-matrix and unknowingly becomes infected.

As the demons begin to emerge from the shadows and try to gain control over the school they aim to raise an army for the Lord of Darkness. All is not lost as Jo is activated by the Light to realise her truth and ascend from the hall of ignorance. Finding the Galactic Compass. Jo discovers its capabilities to time travel through time and the universe. This sees her pitted in a race against time as she is primed by the Galactic Council and Ascending Angel Academy to decode the artificial system and stop the Lord of Darkness from enslaving humanity.

I will say that the De-coding of Jo has a great premises. It is clear to see Love’s views, ones I align with myself, that light and love should prevail and it has a power all of its own. This is mixed in with the paranormal and sci-fi elements to make a good book and start to a series but I just couldn’t bring myself to rate a full five stars, but it is most definitely a strong four, or four and half.

I personally, though I appreciate I am older than the intended audience, I found that some of the themes were incredibly dark for the 15+ audience. I am no way a prude but a lot of the darker themes the characters go through are incredibly so and in some cases I felt the ‘fix’ for some of the problems was romanticsed through Jo’s ability (this theme continues on in the other novels as well). while Do you need while as I say I align with Love’s clear views of love and compassion I feel it could be almost too simplicit to look at real life problems in such a way, especially if a younger reader who may be suffering as such reads this. That said on the flip side that it does hopefully show that with the support and love of friends anything is possible.

That said the book is far from simple. Love’s world building is amazing detailed and highly believable. Again I may be doing some readers a disservice but again this is why I felt it might border the new adult as well since as the story and series continue the world building gets more intense with strong sci fi and paranormal themes. All in all though I enjoyed this book and was thankful that I got to read the series as part of the book tour. Reviews for book two and three coming soon! I certainly would recommend to fans of sci fi and paranormal but just warn of the darker themes within.

Imagine you're trying to piece together a mystery of how an alien parasite nearly caused an extinction level event on your planet. You stumble across a journal written by a young woman named Jo who was a student at a private school. The journal tells you about her traumatic history, how her mother was taken hostage by a homicidal sociopath and the nightmares that plagued her ever since. You see through her eyes, watching as her schoolmates, one by one, are transformed into little more than sleepwalking zombies intent upon destroying the world.

The De-Coding of Jo: Hall of Ignorance takes you on that journey. It thrusts you into a captivating quandary and allows you to follow Jo as she seeks to unravel a galactic conundrum where magic and spirituality intertwine with algebraic principals and the bewildering perplexities of navigating human adolescence. This unique story invites you to press the "I Believe' button, while exploring the complexities of relationships and broadening your horizons of mystical understanding.

The characters are compellingly realistic, each unique in their own right and relatable on many levels. Young Adult readers, as well as those of any age, will find familiar traits and remember similar situations as the story impels you along. Well, ok, maybe no one has ever actually faced off with a demonic parasite that turns your friends into troglodytes, but we can all relate to the awkwardness and confusion of teenage youth.

Vivid and engaging, author Lali A. Love has spun a magical web of intrigue that is sure to entice and entertain, while sneaking in just enough thought-provoking substance to make readers sit back and say, "Hmmm!"

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

From the beginning it starts with spiritual insights and reflections as Jo begins her own awakening journey. For me, even though I am spiritual inclined, it took me while to get used to this writing style. It didn’t flow as nicely because of the philosophical and spiritual tone it takes. It is really intense and I had to take some breaks to fully comprehend every chapter.

The story is about everyday teenage life on a private school, where the Lord of Darkness has a mission to turn humanity into sleepwalkers. We delve into the unperfect lives of Jo and friends, who have to battle trauma and drug abuse. They question life, the world and the misery of humanity. I was glad that between the heavy spiritual parts, there was some lightness in between. Will this tiny light, have a chance to thrive amid the darkness that is spreading through the school?

I must warn about the trigger content as it compass drugs, medication abuse, rape, overdose and verbal abuse. But this story is also about friendship, ascension, enlightenment and a really intense awakening that goes through the same line as ‘The Celestine Prophecy’. It takes the reader into account to experience the awaking with them. You are engaged in this story to feel your trauma and uplift it from the darkness. This is a very unique writing style, that stirs up your own reflection.

I love it from the beginning to the end and can’t wait to read another spiritual adventure.

I was really looking forward to this book, the cover looks great and really intrigued me.

However, I really wasn't sure about it at the start. I was just a little confused about where the storyline was heading and how I was meant interpret it all. As I read on, things started to come together a bit more and I found it easier to decipher.

I think the best way to look at this book is as a small part of the whole! Like with other fantasies where we start by spending time world-building.
This really helped me to qualify the parts that I didn't connect with - such as the seeming sensationalisation of drug use in teenagers and the multiple triggers and sensitive issues dealt with by this small group of teens.
I totally understand that the like-minded would gravitate to each other - but the group's issues seemed a little excessive at first.
But this becomes the whole point!

I wasn't sure whether the plot was an everyday modern day teen issues kind of thing, a spiritual journey or a fantasy and I found I was switching view for quite a while - however, towards the middle of the book, things definitely became clearer and I could then see that this is a really clever, creative fusion of all 3 of these.

Jo's spiritual awakening allows her to ascend to the angelic realm where she learns the code to help her friends escape from their personal issues.
The group also come across a gateway in the school basement where they inadvertantly release an evil parasite which starts to infect the other pupils allowing the evil Lord of Darkness to hatch his plan to reign over Earth.
Jo has to use her new found knowledge to overcome him and save her friends.

I loved the use of music here. The ancient knowledge that vibrations and frequencies can resonate with all objects and alter states which Jo used to her advantage - and the use of modern day artist's music and lyrics to keep things fresh was really unique.
There was also a lot of technical information offered which I think sets the tone for the series and helps to build the world for future adventures.

I'm really looking forward to reviewing book 2 and seeing where Jo goes next and how this all connects together .

Being the first book of the Ascending Angel Academy series, The De-Coding of Jo was written by the award-winning author Lali A. Love.
This story is a mixture of fantasy and paranormal with a sprinkling of science fiction. The De-Coding of Jo tells the story of a sixteen-year-old who tries to save her classmates from becoming sleepwalkers.
What an amazing read! I really loved the way in which the author brought to life this fantastic world. Lali A. Love´s prose is clean and lean, and that is the main reason I think this book is perfect for teenagers and young adults. The language is simple, yet full of enriching vocabulary. The characters are very well described and drawn, and it is very easy to emphasize with them.
Another thing I loved were Jo´s journal entries and the way the author included the Hertz. I think these are excellent techniques, because readers can experience how the protagonist feels.
I highly recommend this incredible book, I think scene after scene were perfect!

This is the first book in the Ascending Angel Academy series, written by Lali A. Love, an award-winning author of visionary fantasy, metaphysical thrillers, and transformational poetry. The De-Coding of Jo is an interesting fusion of fantasy, paranormal and science fiction beautifully written. As soon as I got through the first few pages, I was already impressed!
I really liked the richness and diversity of the characters. They were all well defined and different from what you would normally expect from a fantasy book. Because the story is surprisingly deep and complex, I think I occasionally lost track of some of the finer points, but not too often, and it wasn’t really an issue. Dialogues were also really engaging because they were clever and witty and sometimes even thought provoking. Anyone who is a fan of young adult fiction should read it!

I was looking for a novel to gift my brother and after reading “The De-Coding of Jo” I have to say I found it. He enjoyed the read even more than I did. It is a very adequate read for teenagers, and this book made him want to start reading again, so it was a win-win for all.

The plot of this dark-fantasy novel goes around good and evil and the power Jo, the main character, has to help light shine over the evil darkness.

The main thing that sold me was the fact that it is a gender inclusive cast; I found that to be very relevant in today’s world, even more in books for younger readers. That way we are helping educate on this topic and books are a fantastic way to do it, so props to the author.

As magical as can be!

What an outstanding book! I truly appreciate how wonderfully Liali A. Love has written this book is! The writing style, the plot, the way the she presents and touches delicate topics throughout the book give a fresh and clear way for the imagination to soar and enter the world of the author. I was truly drawn into Jo’s story because at first, she’s denying who she really is until she realizes that she is more than what she thought she was and excepts her celestial calling. Magic, good and bad are at war and Jo learns more and more through the story. A kind of magic that saves everyone’s lives including her dear mother.
I highly recommend this wonderful book to fantasy lovers as myself!

Greeping fantasy book

Lali Love is the author of “The De-Coding of Jo”, which is the first book of the series “Ascending Angel Academy”.

The main idea behind this book is original, one of the kind. The story is about a troubled teenage girl who, after seeing her mother taken hostage in an unforgettable night, tries to cheer herself up by spending time with her friends at school. Unfortunately, nightmares are just starting for this little lady: she and her friends accidentally open a portal that spreads evil and could lead to the end of humanity.

The events occurring in this book are unique and engaging.

I particularly liked that the characters are of various genders. This is an inclusive story that teenagers and young adults might find captivating.

A magical and spellbinding book.

This book is a perfect mix of reality, fantasy, science fiction and the paranormal. The De-coding of Jo: Hall of Ignorance by Lali A. Love is an interesting tale about the infinite struggle between light and darkness, good and evil. It is a very complex and very simple story at the same time.

I believe the characters are amazing, especially the main character, Jo, who must deal with terrible nightmares since she was sixteen years old, when her mother was taken hostage by a homicidal maniac. She will discover her celestial identity while trying to save the world.

I loved the plot. It is completely captivating, so it engages the readers and immerses them in a perfectly created imaginary world. I recommend it to all teenagers and young adults.

This is the story of a strong sixteen-year-old teenager called Jo, whose mother was taken hostage. Jo and her friends get involved in an incident that will make her classmates become sleepwalkers.
The Decoding of Jo is a very entertaining story that has well developed characters that are believable and the reader can empathise with them. Author Lali A. Love has a very nice narrative style that captured my attention and held it until the end of the story. Also, she was able to create an original story with turns and twists that make this a very enjoyable read.
I recommend this middle length read to all fans of the genre.
