Although anyone can feel the power of the Holy Ghost and be guided by it, it's not until baptism that we are promised the gift of the Holy Ghost: the Holy Ghost will stay with us at all times if we are worthy to receive Him. This is a promise so incredible that at times it can be hard to wrap our minds around, much less apply. What, exactly, does it mean to have the gift of the Holy Ghost daily, and how can it help us?
Following up David Butler's bestselling Almighty and Redeemer, this engaging book for teens walks readers through the various roles the Spirit takes in our lives. From the comforter to witness to guide to companion, Spirit helps readers learn what the Holy Ghost can do for them, how to recognize His promptings, and how to use His promises and privileges in their lives on a day-to-day basis.
David Butler's greatest love is people. He had adopted as a life motto: "Stuff no mattah, people mattah." His favorite people are his wife, Jenny, and their six darling children. Some of his other loves include good food, spontaneous adventures, Christmas morning, and the sea. David cohosts the popular YouTube scripture study channel Don't Miss This with Emily Belle Freeman and is the author of many religious books, including Ites: An Illustrated Guide to the People in the Book of Mormon; The Peter Potential; and Almighty: How the Most Powerful Being in the Universe Is Also Your Loving Father. Follow him on Instagram @mrdavebutler.
Wonderful, easily understandable, friendly writing is David Butler's trademark. This book is no different. Not only does he explain the Holy Ghost, who He is, His roles, etc, but he also gives great examples from Life and uses powerful metaphors to explain his point. I recommend the audio book too, read by the author in his happy, excited tone, like a buddy who learned something very cool and wants to share it.
This is the last in a series on the Godhead by David Butler. Though written for teens, I still enjoyed it; there were some great stories from both scripture and everyday life that highlight the varied roles of the Holy Ghost, and when we might need him: - a witness, for when we feel far from our heavenly home - a testifier, for when we feel unsure - the sanctifier, for when we wish we were better - the guide, for when we feel lost - the comforter, for when things are hard - the UNcomforter, for when we feel content - the magnifier, for when we wish we were more
Additionally, there are chapters about who the Holy Ghost is, how we can recognize the Spirit, and how we can better receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Really readable and inspiring; I've enjoyed this whole series a lot!
A great reminder of the many roles that the spirit of the id Holy Ghost can play in our lives. Written in David Butler’s easy to relate to style which is good for readers of all ages and understanding.
I looked at this book as the young adult version of Robert Millet's book THE HOLY SPIRIT. Butler has done a great job with this book! I love his stories and analogies and how he brings the subject to a level that you can really understand. I loved the following from this book:
Have you ever thought, "I know that the Holy Ghost really loves me!" No, you know that God loves you and that Christ loves you, but do we ever think about the Holy Ghost really loving us? We know how a Father loves and how a brother loves, but we can't really relate to how a Ghost loves. But we need to remember that the title of Ghost is of his physical being, but not of his personality. He is a person, He just doesn't have a body, but he has feelings, a personality and emotions, just like you and I and like Jesus Christ and our Heavenly Father.
“I am perfectly satisfied that my Father and my God is a cheerful, pleasant, lively, and good-natured Being. Why? Because I am cheerful, pleasant, lively and good-natured when I have His Spirit…. " --Heber C. Kimball
The Holy Ghost is kind, gentle, wonderful and sensitive, just like the Father and the Son are. He gets happy and offended. He's proud of us in some moments and sometimes sad. He mourns, has a sense of humor, and laughs and has memories and interests, just like they do. And His number one interest just happens to be you!
What if I choose wrong? The Spirit will not let us get very far in a wrong decision. If we are headed down a dangerous or wrong path He will always turn us around in a very clear way. If Siri knows how to reroute us I promise God can do it too. Also God is bigger than our choices. Even if we did choose wrong God could weave the mistake into the pattern of our life and still provide opportunities for blessing and chances for wonderful amazing things ahead. I promise you can not ruin your life or your eternal destiny when you are tying to trust in the goodness of God the forgiveness of Jesus and the guiding hand of the Holy Ghost.
You have spiritual gifts! But spiritual gifts are not about us. They didn't come to us because of our unique abilities or hard work. Gifts are gifts. They always come to us for us to bless and lift the lives of someone else. They are not about us.
"The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit." John 3:8 In modern English that means no one knows where the wind comes from. It just shows up and then blows off to somewhere else. You can't follow it when it leaves and you can't force it to come. That is what the Spirit is like. He comes and goes according to His infinite wisdom and love. We cannot demand Him to come or force His help. The way we live is not a formula but a desire to be close to Him. The Lord has taught us principles that will help us to have His influence more in our lives.
Have you ever checked how much time you spend on apps? Zacchaeus in the Bible wanted to see Jesus so much that he climbed a tree. Maybe we need to spend less time on our phones, or playing Forte Night and do the same thing Zacchaeus did, climb a tree every now and again. It doesn't have to be a real tree, but a place to escape the press, to enjoy more the of peaceful power that comes from the presence of the Spirit.
This was a great read. I teach Institute with David and he is who he sounds like in this book. He’s a scripture-loving, Jesus-preaching, fantastic individual and everyone who knows him loves him. The book is easy to listen to and a great approach to a very important topic. Its written for every age and emphasizes important principles. Nice job Dave.
I’m not quite the target for this book (the series is for teens) but it’s so well written and enjoyable, I really loved it and learned a lot. He makes spiritual things super accessible and entertaining. I’m going to read this and the others aloud to my nine year old soon!
I loved every minute of this book! There were so many eye opening moments where I suddenly understood something that it seemed I had been just on the cusp of grasping, but for some reason it lay beyond my reach. I like to read it little by little, so each concept could sink in and do a little work in me before moving onto the next. I feel that way about most non fiction, especially the learning and life-changing kind. So, because of that, it has been a whole since I read the others in the series, but I think this one is my favorite. That isn't what I'd expected to begin with, but I thinkthe Holy Spirit is the member of the God head that is the least well known, and the most misunderstood. So I think I liked this one the best probably because I learned so much more, and had so many more enlightening and "aha!" moments while reading. The funny part about that is that was Him, the Holy Ghost. So I liked this book about the Spirit of God so much because it facilitated a stronger relationship with him through being with him more. So good!
I’ve read ~110 books in the last year and a half and nothing has been so impactful on me as this series of books by Dave Butler. This one is about the roles of the Holy Spirit in our lives. He has two others (Redeemer and Almighty) that talk about Christ and Heavenly Father and their roles. Incredible. He brings the gospel down to a level that is so real and relatable. Please read. You won’t regret it.
I feel like the author is my friend! Simple and sweet explanation of how to recognize the Spirit in our lives. Definitely want to share this with my kids. I wish Mr. Butler could be my teen’s seminary teacher!
It feels weird to give a book about the Holy Ghost only 4 stars... but it is an honest review. I really did enjoy it. I just also find myself wanting to just finish it. My favorite thing about this book and the previous two (Almighty & Redeemer) is the chapter titles. I love the new perspective they give.
i really loved this book. I listened to it on audiobook and I felt like I was good friends with the author after listening. I learned a lot and I felt the Spirit while listening. I want to read more of his books.
Short book. Big print. Read slowly. Amusing style of writing interspersed with some gems of insights. I learned to think about the Holy Ghost in a much different way. I am really hoping my husband will read this one with me to gain a different perspective on the Spirit and how He works.
I love the simple way this author delivers a very powerful message. I have enjoyed the two prior books in this series and this one did not disappoint. This book focuses on the Holy Ghost. It talks about who he is and his role in the Godhead. There were many things I already knew and understood that were good to be reminded of but there were other things that I had never really thought about and made me think. Definitely worth the read.
I really like David Butler’s perspective and the humor he puts into his books. I think we each have a similar sense of humor because I laugh out loud constantly while reading his books. And yet, I don’t get the sense that he isn’t taking this spiritual topic seriously. I still feel like I’m learning a lot but not in so serious a way and I love that.
As with the first two books in this trilogy, there is so much relatable content and teaching and I think this book would be perfect for teens. I’m even tempted to have my 11yo read it because David explains things so much better than I often do.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to better understand the Holy Ghost, His place in the Godhead and our lives, and what we can do to have Him to close to us.
Quotes I loved: Would you use words like wonder and majesty and amazing to describe the work of the Holy Spirit on your Tuesday afternoons?
Life is going to be lonely, sad, confusing, tough, and dangerous, but Gos offers gifts of the companionship, comfort, counsel, power, protection, and purification that come through the ministry of the Holy Spirit. To not just survive, but to live a life of wonder, majesty, glory, amazement, and miracles. A life that changes the world.
Most of the work and mission and ministry of the Holy Spirit in our lives happens inside our souls and is difficult to measure. It’s invisible.
“If you have a thought to do something good, it’s prompted by the Holy Ghost.” Elder Bednar
As we have more and more experiences, we become more confident in recognizing His voice and feeling His presence.
He speaks in ways that are familiar to you.
The work of the whole Godhead will lead to changes, to miracles, and to good. . . .as we are learning to trust, the miracles will keep coming. The Spirit is going to continue working wonders in our lives even when we don’t recognize Him there. So keep asking, and keep listening, and be patient—all meaningful relationships take time. And this is a relationship worth having—a friend, a revealer, a helper, and a sanctifier—a member of the Godhead within whispering distance.
God is willing to speak and connect with anyone.
…revelation is a personal, one-on-one interaction with Good. A moment when He reaches into our stories.
“The Holy Ghost bonds us to the Lord. By divine assignment, He inspires, testifies, teaches, and prompts us to walk in the light of the Lord.” -Ronald A. Rasband
Even though Good might be a billion miles away, the Holy Ghost makes it feel like He sitting right next to us understanding everything in our hearts and living our lives with us side by side.
“There is a lot of Jesus on this island.” -Jenny Butler
Wherever we are, or whatever we’ve done, we can be within that whispering distance of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
What people notice is the temple. And they notice it even more because of the lights. Which means of the lights are doing their job, then no one ever notices them—they only notice the temple.
One of the reasons we probably don’t know much or talk much about the Holy Ghost as a person is because He is doing His job. And when He is His job, you don’t walk away and think about Him, but you walk away thinking more about the Father and the Son. All of His purpose is to try to point you away from Him and toward Them. To make Them sparkle.
“Impressions on the soul that come from the Holy Ghost are far more significant than a vision. “When Spirit speaks to spirit, the imprint upon the soul is far more difficult to erase. Every member of the church should have impressions that Jesus is the Son of Good indelibly pictured on his soul through the witness of the Holy Ghost.” -Joseph Fielding Smith
“The gift of the Holy Ghost . . . is the messenger of grace by which the blood of Christ is applied to take away our sings and sanctify us (see 2 Nephi 31:7).” Elder D. Todd Christofferson
Because of the gift of the Holy Ghost, we can have His essential help on our journeys “to become” during our entire lives. The sooner that begins, the more time the Holy Ghost has to work in us in a more consistent way.
We make ourselves available and choose to be reborn, but it is through Jesus’s labor, blood, sweat, tears, and visit through death’s door that we are actually able to be reborn. The Spirit is who brings all of the power of His sacrifice into our souls.
…my best bit of advice I can give right now is one I learned from a move—to just keep swimming. Keep going. The lifeboat is no far. And if it comes to it, the Lord knows how to help us walk on water. He might let you swim but He will not let you drown.
In that story of the Liahona, we learn that when they followed the directions on the ball, it not only eventually led them to the promised land, but along the way it “led [them] in the more fertile parts of the wilderness” (1 Nephi 16:16). There are, scattered throughout the Arabian Peninsula (the spot Lehi and and his family were traveling), pockets that you would think were a tropical island. Most of the area is hot, sandy, and lifeless, but there are oases scattered, little mini Hawaiis, and river beds of life to follow if you know where to go. The Holy Ghost has the eventual goal and purpose of leading us to the promised land—to eternal life in the presence of the Father and the Son. He also wants to lead us through pieces of paradise along the way. There are several ways to get from A to Z—the Spirit wants to guide us and lead us on the best possible route. This does not mean that we will not experience hardship and disappointment and tragedy in our lives. Keep in mind that most of the time Nephi’s family was traveling it was through barren desert, living on raw meat, with brothers who wanted to kill their dad. They were definitely in a desert place—but they were also definitely being led by the Lord. Getting us to eternal life is more important to the Lord than comfort or a certain school, job, or spouse.
The Spirit will not let us get very far in a wrong decision. If we are heading down a dangerous or wrong path, he will always turn us around in a very clear way. If Siri knows how to reroute us, I promise that God can do it too.
God is bigger than your choices. Even if you did choose wrong, he could weave that mistake into the pattern of your life and still provide opportunities and blessings and chances for wonderful, amazing things ahead. I promise you that you cannot ruin your life or your eternal destiny when you are trying to trust in the goodness of God, the forgiveness of Jesus, and the guiding hands of the Holy Spirit. So just make the choice and move ahead—you won’t mess up what God has in store for you.
The word Comforter translated in the Bible actually comes from the Latin language. Com means “with” and fortis means “strong.” The word means “with strength.” When the King Ames Bible was translated, the translators chose this word to teach that the Comforter not only comes to us to heal our wounds after battle, but also comes to stand next to us to strengthen us during those times of battle.
The Spirit does ask us to do hard things. Hard things that bring us closer to God.
Sin grieves the Spirit.
One of the great privileges of the gift of the Holy Ghost is a magnifying power, strength, or ability beyond what we are normally capable of doing.
“The gift of the Holy Ghost . . . Quickens all the intellectual faculties, increases, enlarges, expands and purifies all the natural passions and affections. . . . It inspires, develops, cultivates, and matures all the fine-tones sympathies, joys, tastes, kindred feelings, and affections of our nature. It inspires virtue, kindness, goodness, tenderness, gentleness, and charity. It develops beauty of person, form and features. It tends to health, vigor, animation, and social feeling. It invigorates all the faculties of the physical and intellectual man. It strengthens, and gives tone or the nerves. In short, it is, as it were, marrow to the bone, joy it the heart, light to the eyes, music to the ears, and life to the whole being.” Parley P. Pratt
The gift of the Holy Ghost enhances everything about life.
Living with the gift of the Holy Ghost allows Him to increase and introduce new abilities to us that we simply could not have on our own.
The Spirit cares about every aspect of our lives, and with Him as a companion, we are more capable than we are on our own.
I don’t know all things—and I certainly can’t do all things—but God does and can.
The Spirit is able to make us more than we are. He is able to reach people through us that we couldn’t ever reach on our own. He is able to be is course that we that we never had. Too love in a way we didn’t know our hearts could. The Spirit strengthens us to ensure hard things that otherwise would’ve crushed us. He opens up the way for us to live happier, holier, healthier lives. We may feel like we are not enough—no, we may know that we are not enough—but with the Holy Spirit, we can say for ourselves Paul’s words: “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me” (Philippians 4:13). That strength comes as a gift of grace through the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. And just like with Abinidi, that same fire, passion, and power that raised Jesus from the grave lives in us (see Romans 8:10).
This is a great book for anyone trying to better understand the roles and mission of the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost is a member of the Godhead. He helps us know truth and connects us to heaven. He testifies of the Father and the Son. He helps us find our way back to them. Here are some of the specific roles of the Holy Ghost covered in this book: "For the day you feel far from home... The Witness (p. 40)." "For the day you feel unsure... The Testifier (p. 54)." "For the day you wish you were better... The Sanctifier (p. 67)." "For the day you feel lost... The Guide (p. 81)." We will see miraculous indications that God the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, preside over this Church in majesty and glory... But in coming days, it will not be possible to survive spiritually without the guiding, directing, comforting, and constant influence of the Holy Ghost (Russell M. Nelson, p. 2).'"

This series [those stand alones] are excellent for readers young and old. I listened and had to buy them in paper from. The Spirit is the BEST. I definitely feel closer and have a new perspective as to the importance of the place of the Holy Ghost in the godhead and in my life's journey.
**One of my sisters gave me this book for my birthday and I loved the new insights I gained about the Holy Ghost. The chapter titles show what David Butler covers in his book and he shares each chapter with engaging and memorable insights and stories. I plan on sharing this book with my teenagers! Who is the Holy Spirit? How to Recognize the Holy Ghost For the Day You Feel Far From Home: The Witness For the Day You Feel Unsure: The Testifier For the Day You Wish You were Better: The Sanctifier For the Day You Feel Lost: The Guide For the Day When Things are Hard: The Comforter For the Day You Feel Content: The Uncomforter For the Day You Wish You Were More: The Magnifier For the Day You Want to Know How: Receiving the Holy Ghost
This is a very inspirational book. The author has a way with words that all can understand. My favorite chapter was 7. Why does God allow bad things to happen? It spoke to me. Read this book and see what part speaks to you.
For me, this book acted as a reminder of the many roles of the Holy Ghost. The most powerful thought in the book was a reminder that the Holy Ghost always points us to the Father and the Son and gives them the glory. What a role! I’m thankful that the Holy Ghost delivers peace to our minds and hearts when our Father wishes us to be comforted and reassured. It’s most amazing!
The subject led me to expect a book that would require complete focus and so I geared up mentally for “study mode” in order to get the most out of it. I was surprised at how relatable the message was. It flowed easily and kept my attention and I was able to finish it in a day. I will be looking for other books by this author.
A quick, easy read that left me uplifted and inspired. A simple-to-understand explanation of the third member of the godhead. David Butler has a laid-back, often humorous way of helping readers understand deep topics and make them accessible in everyday life.
Listened to this audiobook read by the author. This is a great book for everyone, though I think it’s written for teens and young adults. I liked it so much I went and bought two paper copies of the book. One to gift and one to keep for my family to read.
The third in David Butler’s trilogy about the godhead, SPIRIT wonderfully describes the roles that the Holy Ghost can play in our daily lives. Although this series was written for teens, my husband, our 22yo son, and I have enjoyed and learned from it.
