"Holly is the planning mentor every author needs." Meg Cowley, USA Today Bestselling Author and BookSniffer app co-founder. "As someone who is terrible about setting goals, a book like this that breaks them down not only into 'how' but also 'why' can be an invaluable resource." Josh Roseman, author of AFTER THE APOCALYPSE and BOSS FIGHT.
I am a big goal setter and follower, but when the pandemic hit, I found myself for the first time in my life unable to accomplish much of anything. This is the type of book I wish I had earlier in the year when I had about given up on my ability to write entirely. Since I’m not a time traveler, I’ll explain why a book like Goal Setting for Writers is one you need on your shelf.
Many goal setting courses and books just focus on methods of goal setting. In this book, Lyne does recommend the SMART method, but the majority of the narrative is focused on the writer mindset. I’ve never read a book that gives me permission to allow my ever changing life to *shocker* change. Whether it’s family, illness, or even a pandemic, or worse, I felt absolutely seen while reading this book. Where this book stands out is that it truly understood the writer mindset while (key word here -->) *encouraging* goal setting the SMART way.
This book is for any writer who wants to achieve more each year in their career while also including those who are just starting out.
This book is a fantastic tool, full of resources that any author at various stages of their journey can put into use. It's an enjoyable read, with humour scattered among the many golden nuggets of advice. Holly has done a great job of laying out a roadmap that you can begin applying from the get go. There's also prompts or homework at the end of each chapter to help guide you in implementing the advice step by step.
I raced through the book, I couldn't put it down. I've always had goals but they were vague and weren't serving me. Goal Setting for Writers has taught me so much and made me really sit down and take stock of where I want to go. I'm clearer on my goals, what I want, and how I'm going to get there than ever. For the first time ever, I have an achievable plan for me that can change and bend depending on what comes my way. I don't feel stuck anymore.
I thoroughly believe this is a must read for any author. Regardless of your goal, whether you've published none, one, or fifty books, there are lessons in here for everyone. Goal Setting for Writers is relatable, it's realistic. The focus is on real life, the obstacles we all face, and how to put a real plan in place that is going to work for you.
Wherever you are in your journey, this book is a must read.
This is a great book. It takes tried and tested ideas on goal setting and makes them applicable to the very specific world of writers. It is clear that the author is a writer herself and understands the difficulties of getting words onto the page. There are also lots of new tips that I found really thought provoking and helpful. That and the author's clear pragmatism and self effacing style made this a very easy book to read and recommend.
Holly Lyne's goal setting workshop that I attended in 2020 was instrumental in me getting my book finally finished and published before the end of the year. Her goal setting book is just as motivating and helpful and its really given me valuable tools to be able to set myself up for success. I highly recommend this book to all writers.
As a reverent follower of Norman Vincent Peale and all things related to goals and to-do lists. I found this book very thorough and witty at once. It teaches you how to be on goal and get on. goal without sacrificing yourself through simple guidelines to create balance in your life and productivity. It is a very good book for the budding writer or the old pro looking for a new take on things.
One for the toolkit of every busy, modern, ambitious author. Holly is the planning mentor every author needs - this is an asset for any and every stage of an author career. Accessible, practical, and concise, yet detailed and comprehensive, this is an excellent balance for any modern author. - Meg Cowley, USA Today Bestselling Author and BookSniffer app co-founder
Talk about timely! I finished this practical guide on the second to last day of 2020. A great blend of encouragement for writers, a healthy dose of realism (we know how life can happen), and practical application in the exercise section at the end of each chapter. I love Holly's writing style and genuine voice. It's a quick read but packed with applicable steps to set writing goals and set up a writing life that serves who you are.
Full of useful advice, and exercises for trying out. Definitely made a difference to this writer and is going to help keep me in track from now on. Thank you so much for this book xD
