Orthomolecular medicine can be effective in the treatment of schizophrenia, a mental disorder often treated with drugs. Deficiency often plays a major role in the onset of this condition. Thus, nutritional supplementation is integral to Dr. Hoffers approach to schizophrenia. This short, concise guide explains how the disorder is diagnosed, what causes it and how to effectively treat it without drugs.
As an herbalist, it sometimes amazes me at the efficiency of the human body to heal. We are created with amazing abilities, especially when given proper nutrients. I am excited to see where this journey leads as I try to help my own daughter heal.
I wanted more information, and expanded experimental results (i.e. tables of results over time). I think that Dr. Hoffer is on to something great, but this needs more research, and more trials. The results he already has ought to be the basis for considerable funding for more of the same, but of course funding in psychiatric research is often driven by the agendas of those for whom psychiatric drugs are business. I know people who would scoff at the idea of treating schizophrenia with high dose vitamins, but this guy is a medical doctor who has conducted trails, and worked with patients over many years; he is not anti-psychiatry, and often prescribes anti-depressants, and sometimes neuroleptics in the short-term, but he has had his best results with niacin and vitamin c mega-dosing, and I think we should listen to him. His tone is a bit annoying at times, for me, as a neurodiversity advocate, and as somebody who does not buy into the neoliberal worldview (he is typically 21st century american in this sense), but when one sees through the fact that he is, at base, a normalacy-concerned medical doctor, and when one looks to the actual results for patients wellbeing, what he has to say is quite remarkable. I think that an orthomolecular approach might work much faster for people in combination with decent psycho-social support, but this is not something which is explored in this book (it is not Dr. Hoffer's domain). Something like the Open Dialogue approach combined with orthomolecular, and possibly spiritual crisis approaches (in some cases) would be the dream team, perhaps.
This book supports my philosophy that God gives us everything we need for good health, without having to go through Big Pharmaceutical. It chronicles easy, cheap treatments for schizophrenia that actually work, and if you read reviews here and on amazon, you'll find many more such stories.
I think we're all frustrated with turning on the news to find that another young man has perpetrated violence on innocents. The story is always the same -- nice kid starts getting a bit strange, then a bit stranger, and at some point is completely crazy. Sometimes the parents are desperately trying to get the kid help, sometimes they are desperately trying to avoid the issue and hope things get better on their own. Often the final eruption of violence can be traced to trying out a new drug.
This book is inexpensive (very cheap on a kindle) and a quick read - the more people who are aware of orthomolecular treatments for troubled young men, perhaps we can put an end to young men harming themselves and others.
How it that for a title of a book to pickup and read. This is a short book only about 50 pages and since I've recently become fascinated with the field of Biomedical & Orthomolecular Treatment I thought it was worth the time to read.
Although not a book for everyone I found it interesting. Despite the terrible way I eat I have long been a believer that many of the diseases facing our society could be prevented by diet and nutrition.
