I'd like to start by clarifying that I do understand that this is intended to be satire. I am aware that it is poking fun at books with incredibly annoying characters who are unjustly dramatic about minor issues.

However, being aware of this didn't change the fact that I've just had to endure a book about incredibly annoying characters who are unjustly dramatic about minor issues. I get what they were going for, but unfortunately, I couldn't stop myself getting bored. There were moments that made me laugh, and I particularly enjoyed moments of dialogue, but the overarching feeling I experienced was a desire to be finished reading so I could tick it off the list and move on.

I've realised that this just isn't the kind of classic I enjoy, and am content to admit that my low rating is definitely more of a me-thing than an Austen-thing.

Northanger Abbey is one of Austen's books that I have never read (never saw a film adaptation) and after reading the juvenilization of the book, I do not see a need to explore the original. This may not be a fault of Barder's, she was working from the original source material, but these Austen characters are not ones that I desire to explore further.

I read this with my sister and yes, it will count towards my reading goal this year, because I said so. I do think reading the kid version will help me better understand when I go read the real thing at some point in my life

I liked this better than the original, and now it's hard to understand why the original book was so much longer! This summarizes the original into a 45-ish minute audiobook, it was well done and hits all the important bits.

Northanger Abbey originally by Jane Austen and adapted by Gemma Barder designed for younger readers, is a great book with some amazing illustrations while staying true to the atmosphere of Austen's work.
I would recommend this to any Jane Austen fan or someone just being introduced to Jane Austen for the first time.
