Shadow Bound #2

Rate this book
Seattle. Humans have no idea about witches or gods.

Beckett’s a screw up. She’s never been good with magic. What’s a witch to do when she’s more of a nuisance to the coven than she is an asset?

She goes on her own, makes a living working at a bookstore, and keeps trying to make her magic work.
It doesn’t.

Finnick’s a pain in the ass demigod who made the mistake of pissing off the wrong witch. Now he’s carrying a curse. He needs a witch to break the curse. Too bad he’s picked Beckett as that witch.

I agree with all the other reviewers saying that this felt more like the second half of book one than anything else.

Which would maybe be okay if this had an interesting conclusion, but while all the loose threads from book one are (mostly) resolved it's done so in the most expedient and obvious way possible. The ease and lack of meaningful risk or sacrifice it takes robs the ending of any value or true satisfaction.

Though I said mostly resolved, because the only part I actually wanted some closure on - That of Beckett and her parents - Is left raw and painfully exposed. For a story that goes out of its way to give everyone else a happy ending , it's a glaring oversight to leave Beckett bitter and unable to grow past her trauma

Aside from my lack of satisfaction over how things played out, there were more than a few errant typos and slightly garbled sentences in this that lend it a hurried and slightly amateurish feel. If a writer can't give their own work the respect it deserves to check grammar and spelling before charging money for it, then it's a hard sell to ask the reader to respect it more so.

Overall I'm let with the impression this duology was a collection of interesting ideas but no real substance or self-awareness. In spite of enough content for 4 full length novels, it seems to have all been strung together with absolutely no contemplation to the deeper implications of anything, nor the attention to detail of the knock on consequences that would result from them.

Fast paced magic and fun

This book moves along at a fast pace. I like the upbeat attitude of the two main characters, it keeps everything light-hearted even in tense situations. They have good chemistry together and complement each other here
What I don't like is that in this book and the first one the last 50 pages of the book are several chapters of another. I find it very disconcerting to be reading and think I have quite a bit left in the story only to have it end well before the end of the book.
I enjoyed the book it's a good read. Just be aware that it's not as long as you might think.

This was a total blast to read, so much fun. It's a quick and easy read. The editing could have been better as there are occasional words missing, but that doesn't detract from the sheer enjoyment of this story. The characters are well developed and gain even fuller backstories. The interplay between Beckett and Finnick is marvelous. I really loved the characters.

The story actually made me happy to read. It's very positive and uplifting. It's also a completely engaging and most exciting. Loved it! I read this and the first book in one day!! I definitely recommend.

Bubbles! :D
Loved it. Although I gotta say this reads more like part 2 of book 1 rather than a new/separate book..
Still, a very enjoyable read for sure.

Only issue as mentioned plenty of times before: editing.
Mostly it seems like the writers thoughts ran away with her so quickly that her fingers couldn't keep up with the typing, so you end up with quite a few missing words, incomplete sentences.

Bubbling with hope

Beckett's magic was bound by her mother in order to force her to break out of it when she was a baby. Now she was lost in a coma trying to return to reality. When her boyfriend, the demi-god Gimmick, is tricked by a black witch and loses his powers she enlists her coven to stop the black witches from holding a portal to drain all the gods.

Great Story but Too Many Typos

I really enjoyed this story and the characters, but be prepared for a lot of typos and missing words. I give the series 3.8 stars and hope that these books will receive further edits in the future.

I feel like the author took one good book and split it in half to make the first book and this one. It needs a good proofreading also. The story was very good otherwise.
