In an endless sea of sand drifts the Mud Whale, a floating island city of clay and magic. In its chambers a small community clings to survival, cut off from its own history by the shadows of the past.

Chakuro, Suou and Shuan ventured to the battleship Karcharías to convince Orca to release Ouni and Lykos. But instead of rescuing their friends, they are now caught up in Orca’s plan to destroy the Mud Whale and all its residents! He claims this will unleash an apocalypse and overthrow the Nouses, creating a parallel world where humans will never again feel pain or sadness, but Chakuro and his friends aren’t interested in that kind of future. When words prove useless against Orca’s sophistry, will the team from the Mud Whale be forced into violence?!

As usual, this new volume just makes me love this story even more. The characters, plot and art of the Children Of The Whales manga series are and apparently will continue to be one of my favorites! Cannot wait for the next volume! Also: my favorite character has a redemption arc I am living for this!

Rep: neurodiverse main character

Warnings: graphic violence, body horror, armed attack

Having seen into Orca's past, Chakuro urges him to protect Lykos' paradise, the Falaina, instead of using it to destroy. Orca's pain, however, is far-reaching, and even when he stands down for the moment, leading Chakuro and co into a sense of 'crisis averted', he still has plans for Falaina. Still, they achieve their objective of freeing Ouni. Meanwhile, Falaina is being attacked, yet again, by imperial forces, and they have come prepared to deal with thymia users, as they take control of Karcharias. The action in this book can be confusing at times since there are many ships and nouses in play, and I can't wholly be certain I understood what happened with the 'evolved nous' but in short, the danger of the nouses has become more real. The story taking this turn feels momentous, because it just might sway Orca into helping them wholly, and not just to protect his own interests.

The art is especially gorgeous in this volume, but I also have a weakness for 'pretty' body horror. Though the story feels exhausting because there is no break for our characters.

Die Zeichnungen sind besonders schön in diesem Band, ich habe aber auch eine Schwäche für 'hübschen' Body Horror. Doch die Geschichte fühlt sich anstrengend an, weil es keine Pause für unsere Charaktere gibt.

Absolutely nothing goes well for the denizens of the Mud Whale. Just when you thought some diplomacy with their greatest predator would let them exhale, a new threat appears. Basically, their home, their world, and just about everyone they encounter is hell bent on their annihilation. It makes you wonder how they were ever able to set sail on the sea of sand. Even their elders keep secrets that place them all in danger. And, it’s not like thing were peachy before Lykos crash landed among them. But, damn, does Abi Umeda make all of this tragedy porn look good. The art, as always, shines. Expressive characters, beautiful designs, and rich backgrounds make for a great if heart-wrenching reading experience.
