I am a retired computer programmer, an enthusiastic snowboarder, and an inveterate science fiction reader.

And, apparently, an author now. Did not see that coming.

One of the best scifi books I've read in a long while. No senseless tech name dropping for magic things that just happen. Almost everything has a good explanation. Follows one easily relatable character, a nice software developer guy.

It was a great and engaging book, the author kind of got lost in himself and the universe he created. It just got to big to successfully create total characterization.
But speaking of characterization, he did an awesome job. The audiobook is amazing and really brings the book to life.
I'd recommend this book!

This series is to date my favorite Sci-Fi series. It is like Stellaris the game. We start on earth and explore the universe and it's wonders without having to worry about the problems of human needs. It is just really interesting hearing of all the different planets he experiences. The encounters with other species are also very fascinating and portrait in a more grounded way compared to many high sci-fi settings. The species themselfs are not the star wars type not quite humans but feel more like something that is not too alien but not too similar. Something that could have naturally evolved.
The main Character Bob is also sympathetic. A talented nerd that throws pop culture references in everywhere he can, can't be that bad. Now that I think about it he isn't too different from a older MCU Spiderman.
All in all I would recommend to anyone who is interested in the exploration if the universe and either understands or doesn't mind references to old nerdy stuff.

The "Bobiverse" series by Dennis E. Taylor, kicks off with the book "We Are Legion (We Are Bob)" and was a fun and easy read.

The series begins with Bob Johansson, who, having recently sold his software company, decides to sign up for cryogenic preservation after his untimely demise. He awakens a century later to find that he has been resurrected as an artificial intelligence and is now the property of a theocratic state. Bob is tasked with controlling an interstellar von Neumann probe—a self-replicating spacecraft designed to explore the galaxy. The catch? The technology allows him to clone himself, and as he expands his presence throughout space, each clone develops a unique personality, resulting in a growing "Bobiverse" of diverse perspectives and experiences.

A very light sci-fi book which was engaging and often infused with a geeky sense of humour. With central themes including the nature of identity and consciousness, the ethics of cloning and artificial intelligence, and the vast potential for human (or post-human) expansion into the cosmos, I found myself easily engrossed in the unfolding story.

Knowing there are 4 books in this series (so far), I definitely will read the next book, “For We Are Many”, however, I intend finishing a book that I had shelved halfway through last year - about time, I wrapped that one up (as it is the second in a trilogy and won some serious awards!)

For the fun, escapism and entertainment, I give this book a 4.0 out of 5!

Exactly the kind of escapism I need at this point in my life. Very interesting takes on important topics like consciousness, war and artificial intelligence packed in captivating plots. Each of the first the books in the "Bobiverse" deserves give stars - even if I was sometimes a little disappointed by the author's tendency to good over the specifics of important discoveries, such as faster-than-light communication.

A word to the wise: Just stop after number three, don't read the fourth one.

Dennis E. Taylor's "Bobiverse" books are among my favorites.

Bob finds himself the victim of a car crash to wake up, well, as a brain in a box so to speak. After some initial confusion and history, Bob finds himself rocketing across the stars as a 1-man, humanity-saving sentient von neumann probe! His first task - to make life onboard more bearable by making himself a virtual environment ... then, down to work to try and find a new home for humanity. And maybe make some clones of himself. Bill, Mario, Riker, Homer... Goku... the list gets pretty long. And each is his own man... computer? Sentient bob-in-a-box?

I loved everything about this book - and its sequels. It is my sincere hope that Dennis E. Taylor will once again visit the Bobiverse and give us another book. But, for now, I am satisfied with the 3 installments that we do have.

These books were a completely random find that has led me to a new author and a new universe of possibilities... I should also point out that Bob's predicament is my dream job!

Read these books - you will not regret it!

A fantastic premise with so much promise and so many ideas to explore. While it starts strong, the story gets bogged down fizzles out. I love how Bob wakes up one day and figures out what the hell happened to him and what he does with that knowledge. The world the author creates is on par with the best science fiction authors. What disappointed me was the half hearted exploration of what happens when an artificial intelligence reproduces. As much as I liked the stories about how Bob deals with different situations in different locations (avoiding spoilers here), the author crammed them into just a few generations. Bob is immortal, for all intents and purposes, and these stories could have (should have) taken thousands of years. This could have been on par with "The Forever War" in its exploration, but just didn't rise to the occasion. Still, an enjoyable read.

This sci-fi series just made me happy. It is playfully exploring things like AI, Von Neumann Probes and exploring the universe all through the eyes of a creative and nerdy engineer protagonist turned self-replicating AI. A must read for all sci-fi lovers!

I blew through these three books in less than three days. The stories and the world building were just incredible, and I was completely immersed! I'll admit that by book 3 it was getting a little bit harder to keep up with the ever expanding cast of "Bobs", but by continuing to focus on the core characters (particularly Bob, Riker, Howard, and Bill) it was easy to stay invested in the various plotlines that developed. From Bob's first contact with an emerging civilization, to Riker's work with the original Earth survivors, to Bill's continuing technological advances and oversight of the first off-Earth colonists, to Howard's relationship with Bridget, I developed a connection with and an appreciation for all the different individual clones, and the people and cultures they interacted with. There are some space battles with the big bad enemies - necessary in any futuristic, space exploratory type story - but other than creating tension and a sense of urgency, the chapters dealing with the battles were not my favorite. What I liked best were the relationships - Bob and Archimedes, Will (Riker) and Diana, Howard and Bridget, even Riker and Homer. There are so many characters and worlds imagined in these three books I can't possibly mention them all, but if you enjoy sci-fi with a heart, with adventure, with aliens, and with a dry sense of humor, then you should check out the Bobiverse. I highly recommend the audio version, narrator Ray Porter (aka the voice of "Project Hail Mary) is amazing! His character voices are subtly distinct, and I never failed to chuckle each time Archimedes would address "the BOB". There is a fourth book out, and a fifth nearing completion, so I'm glad I can someday come back to the Bobiverse. For now, I've got some other books to finish (always more books!)

Brillaint series the second was my favourite, this is the type of book which makes me love reading above watching TV. This book wil have you exploring your imagination in ways you never thought possible Bob is incredible, from discovering his form to exploring the universe. This is everything every Sci-Fi fan wants out of a series.

What a great pairing of nerd power fantasy and space opera. I love to fall asleep listening to Bob's imaginative adventures. I try to imagine comic book panels. Some day I want to be an amortal multibeing with a cool ride.

This series is as fun as the title implies. In terms of craft, the world building is excellent. He puts the reader in the moment without overdoing the descriptions. I would love to see someone make it into a campy BBC TV series.

I absolutely love all of the Bobverse series. It's super interesting to explore new worlds with the Bob's. The stakes progressively get higher. If you listen to the audible version, the narrator is fantastic, and I enjoy the personality he brings to life in the characters.

Simply amazing, the plot building and interconnectedness of the whole story is really a feet of literacy. If you enjoy sci-fi and can keep up with 20+ character interactions you'll love this!

Perhaps would be considered a "light" sci fi read but has surprisingly good character development and plot twists and turns.

cool beginning, but it gets a bit repetitive and the writers tone was a little wooden with predicatable nerd humor and cadence.

It is higher than 4 stars, but definitely not 5.
Really fun and easy to read, good ideas, but the book is very shallow. It could have been as deep as The Three-Body Problem with all the themes it touched, instead it became a page-turner. It's not bad for sci-fi book to be action packed, but the potential was so much bigger.
I loved the narrative and jumping between multiple points of view that are all the same person, but slightly different. It might evolve into a literary style of its own, like non-linear novels of Milorad Pavić. Imagine a story told by different versions of Windows? That would be cool. But again, the author didn't take the idea to the right level, those multiple voices just help to carry the plot forward.
The main character reminded me a lot of Mark Watney from The Martian. It's the same type of guy - drawn to puzzles and turns survival into yet another puzzle, almost completely asexual, releases stress through jokes, and so on. "Typical engineer".
At the end, I liked the book, but was left unsatisfied with it at the same time. I would love to read how Bobiverse would look like in a thousand of years, with multiple big families (Bobs and other people who choose to replicate and multiply). I wish there were some explanation of the differences between the clones, because it started looking a bit like evolution and accumulation of changes in the DNA.
Anyway... good book and worth reading. And apparently more books are coming in the series, so maybe the author will have some surprises.
