Just finished this wonderful book after starting it in bed last night. Definitely now in my list of favourites and I'm keen to read whatever else I can get my hands on relating to Selkies!

Highly recommend 'Selkie' for anyone who enjoys folklore and legends, specifically anything related to the sea. It's a fantastic story for all ages.

What a sweet little thing, despite the ugly cover!

I first heard about selkies in a novel by Laurell K. Hamilton. The book wasn't that good but I learned about selkies. So, when I was looking for the English version of one of my favorite book as a kid (namely An Ash-Blonde Witch), Abebooks gave me this as a results too.

It was short. It was cheap. It was mine.

The first thing that struck me was the 1935 setting. I was surprised by the way the protagonist and her parents acted and thought. I mean, I knew classes were (are?) very important in UK but it was weird to actually see it, albeit fictionally. Brownies points for that.

Cathy was a very strong protagonist. She has her strong points and her weakness but she is able to overcame them and the ending is perfect for her.

Clive, as love interests go, was quite dull but, poor guy, he was just the product of his time.

Oh, the ending. It's about seals, tradition, old languages... Perfect!
