Revenge, they say, is a dish best served bloody and twitching.
For Kellik, nothing matters so much as defeating his father and destroying his reign over Port Gloom.
But as powerful as Kellik has become, his father will surely crush him if he doesn't stay three steps ahead. Toward that end he'll have to employ every ounce of cunning, break every rule, wrest ever advantage, and bring the very fury of the Hanged God down upon Port Gloom.
Burning with a furious desire to crush his opponents, Kellik will return with his gorgeous rogues' gallery of companions to attack the ancient city from all sides: using politics, assassinations, betrayals, and outright warfare, he'll stop at nothing to ensure his father's downfall.
He's willing to risk it all. But is there a price to victory even he's not willing to pay?
Warning and minor spoilers: this is an 18+ book intended for mature readers. It contains graphic sex, medieval violence, and nudity.
I would give this 4.5 stars. Very easy read that gets very dark at the end with a couple unexpected plot changes. I am looking forward to see how things turn out for the group in the next book.
****Minor Spoilers**** My biggest beef with the book is the state of Tamara and Cerys in how they view Kellik. Tamara states she has to follow a good leader implying Kellik doesn't measure up. Regarding Cerys nothing Kellik can do will prove to her that he won't follow in his father's footsteps and will disappoint her. She also cannot have sex with Kellik without feeling humiliated and pushes him away when finished. Fast forward several months to King of Shadows and everything is grand with Cerys living and working with Kellik and never expresses her fears so at the forefront in Ascendant. Tamara comes when needed and has no qualms following Kellik. It would have been nice if the author had explored what transpired to change Tarmara and Cerys attitudes torwards Kellik.
Keep writing Mike...I do enjoy your work...I live with pain 24-7and have for the last 16 plus years and there are very few things that I have found that help with relieving me of my pain and those are sleep; the only time I ever l no pain. Then there are the pain pills....helpful but not very effective after that a good movie but after sleep I have found that a good book is about as good as sleep....so please don't stop
Writing.....I really enjoy your work and can't wait for the next episode of the Shadow Rouge.....I am now on to the long-awaited next installment to the Five Trials series....so Thank you......Kevin E Evey,....... by the way I give you five stars on your work the Shadow Rouge.
Spoilers to a different book! Just gonna say that this seems awfully similar to the Throne of Glass (ToG) series by Sarah J. Maas. The dagger-weilding character on the front, as well as the blue flames and the dungeon-esque background are all reminiscent of Celaena Sardothien and her personality/abilities. The mean king? Also in ToG. Fighting said king with a bunch of strong companions? You guessed it, it's in ToG. The real kicker is the name, "King of Shadows". That in-and-of itself is a gender-swapped word away from a book in the Throne of Glass series, "Queen of Shadows". And before anybody gets mad, I understand that this us a separate series, I just thought it sounded all too familiar.
MIKE, I HOPE YOU READ THESE REVIEWS! The ending of this one made my heart hurt, HOW DARE YOU HURT The GOBLIN. What did he do to you Sir. Everything else was going to Hell in a hand basket, but then you had to go hurt poor Pogo.
I don't know if I can forgive it.
I am eagerly awaiting the conclusion, because HOLY HELLS I think this may have been the most gut wrenching ending to a book I've ever read.
Once again awesome story telling from the author! Ceres I'm glad to say returned to what I expected her to be which is an actual assassin who was in love with the MC rather than second guessing everything about him and herself. Tamara and the MC finally get together in all possible ways *wink wink nudge nudge*. And the ending was true to form which is the MC coming out on top in an against all odds situation with a ridiculous ingenious plan.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
There are a few grammar issues in the text, but not so much as to be totally distracting. My only complaint is referring to the snakes aired woman as a Medusa. Media was the woman's name in Greek mythology, but she was a Gorgon.
Other than that, the story had a lot of twists and the most interesting depravity. I can't wait to see how things conclude.
Another great book, but I find myself unimpressed with the MC. I could see things going to shit from a mile away, as could everyone around him, but he had to keep pushing.
Can't say much without (excessive) spoilers so I'll leave it at that. The author's books seem to be getting darker though, and as well-written as they are I can only take so much of that sort of thing and my limit is quickly approaching.
A superbly wrutten book by an author who puts great detail into the flavour of the story! Good well rounded charachters that bring the story to life! The revalation of who his tather was , was a bit obvious but was handled well! And we need a proper conclusion as pogo and Pony where my fave charachters!
I enjoyed shadow rogue series so far, but this one has a long buildup to the end. Some moments felt a bit sluggish and didn’t really mesh well, but overall the story still flowed a a decent pace. I really did enjoy the ending and how it sets the tone for the next book, so I look forward to it!
This book has it all , A great storyline, great characters, and lots of action and adventure. I rec omend this series for all readers that like action and adventure stories.
This third instalment was a fantastic read, fast paced delightfully brutal and shocking, sir - I salute you and look forward to the completion of the story
Wow! A rollercoaster ride of a book! Sword and sorcery at it's fantastic best! Mike Truk invests each of his novels with tragedy, loss, success and triumph. If there's another episode in this series coming, I'm ready!!
