Seasons of Fae #2

King of the Frost

Rate this book
A castle in the sky.
A faerie king.
A changeling child.

Sounds like a fairytale in the making, right? Ayla might have agreed if she didn't remember her parents throwing her to the humans. She's little more than trash to the fae, which is why she's happy to betray her old king.

Except, he spreads madness to everything he touches. Madness which feels right in her skin.

Ayla realizes she must choose between the safety of her new people, or the strange addiction spread from the king to her. A little crazy makes life worth living.

Well, this was entertaining, a very enjoyapble read. Though I sometimes felt like I wanted to slap Ayla. Gurrrl, get on with it already! On the other hand, Storm... is stormy,... indeed. Quick and fun to read, I really recommend it.

In full disclosure, I received an ARC of this book from the author herself in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Having been a long-time fan of novels written under this author’s civil name, I was more than excited to dive into her new writing. This book contains all the goodness you could ever ask for in a faerie read; full of fantasy, poignant characters, steamy romance, and a fast paced, enthralling plot. Having been a faerie Changeling, Ayla is no stranger to the Fae world, and yet she wants no part of it. She’s happy to be close to her human brother, tasked as a caretaker for his children. Yet, when the air court comes knocking on her door, demanding that she do something about The Mad King, Ayla cannot refuse the opportunity to investigate and ultimately rid herself of the faerie world forever. Only, as time goes by, Ayla is torn between the family she loves and The Mad King, whom she finds herself falling in love with day by day, and the Air Court.

I truly enjoyed reading this book. The characters, both main characters and all the side characters, were wonderful and intriguing. Ayla was a gentle yet smart heroine, and Storm was a tortured, angsty soul, but they meshed together so well. They were both shrouded in slight mystery, enough that it wasn’t frustrating to discern their secrets but rather enjoyable. I especially loved that Storm and Ayla weren’t the stereotypical, recycled characters we see time-and-time again, especially in fantasy novels.

This book was a foray into an interesting world with a fresh take on faeries. I only wish there’d been more world-building and more time to explore this rich world, but I have a feeling that will come with the other books in the series. All in all, this book made for a wonderful weekend read and has me thirsty for more fantasy novels by this talented author!

I hate waiting on sequels to come out, so thank goodness second book in the Seasons of the Fae series can out so quickly after the first! This story is a completely separate tale from the first but clearly has connections and tie-in that will feel familiar. King of the Frost tells the story of Ayla and Storm. Ayla is a fae princess that grew up in the human world but is called back to the Air Faerie after she hears reports of the King going mad. Storm has taken over the throne of the Air Faerie, along with the benefits and even larger risks that come with it.

Characters:
Ayla: Ayla is a fae princess who grew up in the human worlds alongside her human family. She is content with this life, helping as a nanny for her adorable nephews. She is much different from "typical" romantic fantasy heroines. She isn't an assassin or a trained fighter, she's just a normal person with unexplored magic that she can't control. I enjoyed reading about a normal protagonist, it felt more "real" that typical fantasy.
Storm: Storm has taken over as King of the Air Faerie, along with all that comes with it. He has intermittent madness and is not your typical "hero". He isn't kind, good-natured but rather he is truly dark and succumbs to madness often. Likely Ayla, he isn't a typical troupe character.

World building:
Almost the entire story takes place in the world of the Air Faerie and the glorious floating glass castle. It was interesting to explore and the history within it lends a lot to the development of both characters. I do think this is the only area where the book falls a little short, I would have liked to explore the realm further, to learn more about the areas around the castle.

Plot:
Unlike the first book, the plot in this is mostly character driven, rather than action driven. I really enjoyed that is was character driven, since both of our main characters have such interesting backstories to learn about and explore. The ending was satisfying. I would have liked an epilogue but maybe we will get a glimpse of Ayla/Storm and Morgan/Liam at the end of book 4? A girl can dream!

If you like reading Fae stories with magic and romance, I highly recommend this book. There is a steamy scene and this book is definitely more NA than YA. I felt this was more romance with large amounts of fantasy elements rather than a fantasy book with a romance subplot. I am super excited to read the third book in the series and luckily I won't have to wait long!

I received this ARC copy for an honest review. Release date 29th June 2020.

I absolutely loved this book, it was well paced and also had a little mystery with Ayla's background. I loved the development of the characters as the story went on. This book definitely checks all the boxes for your classic Fae story.

I really liked this second book of the series. Ayla and Storm are strong characters who just want love and acceptance. A great story of how they are able to work through their issues and find love. I love this world and cant wait for the next book!

Changeling. A child given up by fairy parents.

They honestly think Ayla, the true heir to the throne, the child sent away, cares the new king is mad?

But just a quick look won't hurt, will it? A quick trip to the castle in the sky to be sure they aren't suffering the way she's been told. It can't really be that bad, can it?

There's something about him, something she can't quite resist. Concern grows in her the longer she spends in the castle. Concern for the king, for his people, no - her people.

She must chose between her life with her family, caring for her brother and his family, and the castle in the sky. The mad king who is starting to seem not mad at all to her.

Romantic read in a fantasy castle in the sky. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. I received an ARC copy for an honest review.

King of the Frost is a bit slower paced than King of the Mountains but still just as great of a story. Ayla is very sweet and mild mannered. When she meets tormented Frost, things heat up.
Overall, great story, definitely a page turner. I can't wait for book 3, King of the Flame!

This series just keeps getting better! I love reading about the Fae and Elizabeth Frost(EH) Is exceptional at writing fantasy!
The story was well paced, and there was a little bit of mystery surrounding Ayla that didn’t constantly tease or frustrate the reader. No unnecessary angst!
I loved how the couple use their love and connection to overcome their hardships!( hard not to say anything without giving away spoilers!)
I look forward to the next book in the series!!

I love how Emma Hamm (Elizabeth Frost) builds her stories, her worlds, heroes and especially heroines. Everything is always fascinating and inspiring and with King of the Frost it was no different.

At first I even doubted that I could like Ayla as much as I did with Morgan, the heroine from the previous book, but I was wrong. Ayla is a changeling, who spent her whole life holding tight her humanity, even though she never felt like she fits. I loved how she is the perfect mix of soft and fierce, determined to protect and care for those she loves. And she was exactly what our Mad King needed.

And what can I say about Storm? Dark and tortured, but so much more than that. Throughout history Ayla took of the labels and we got to see what's underneath.

The whole book was so interesting and I love how unique the magic is. I feel that the world of the Elementals is being built little by little throughout the books of the serie and as much as I am dying to know everything, I really like the rhythm.

I'm dying to read the next book, King of The Flames, so curious to know how their stories (and magic) will intertwine. Can’t wait.
I received an ARC copy for an honest review.

“King of the frost” is the second book in the Seasons of Fae series. Released today (29/6)!

Four farie kings has been prophesied to take over the four thrones; Earth, Air, Fire and Water. The only problem is the elementals contained inside the kings. Ravaged by hunger they seek to destroy the whole human realm and bring the world to it’s former glory, before humans came along and ruined the planet they walk on. So far the earth king has been subdued by a witch and now it’s Alyas turn to try and stop the king of frost from taking the throne and damning the humans that she loves so much.

Growing up, Alya always stood out. Her human family loved her but outside the comforts of her family nobody else accepted her. She could do strange things and her brother liked to call her his little fairy. It wasn’t until Alya was much older that she realized the truth of that pet name. Changeling was the correct term for what she was, an unwanted fairy child given away to the humans and now she wants nothing to do with the race that abandoned her.

But recently fae have started to appear in Aylas life more and more, seeking her out and interrupting her quiet life as a nanny for her two nephews. First she tries to ignore them but the fae all bring the same message and pleading request. They call her their queen and beg her to claim her rightful throne from who they now call the mad king. Unless she wants the world as she knows it to end, Alya must now travel to the fairy realm and try to stop the King of the frost from killing off her beloved brother and his to sons along with the rest of the human race. She will do anything to save them but, she desperately doesn’t want the throne for herself.

What she find is a haunted castle in the sky and within a very handsome mad king. With a beauty and the beast vibe this book tells the story of a girl who hasn’t found her place in the world yet and a king plagued by guilt, wanting to do right by his people but struggling to contain the creature inside. When the two meet they are immediately drawn to each other. But Alya must remember why she came; to stop the mad king at all cost.

I have been a fan of this author a long time and now, writing under a new pen-name, I’m not disappointed. The king of the frost is a novel filled with magic and romance, light-hearted and a quick read. Alya and Storm (the king) are both good characters that complement each other well. In fact, the character growth is something that I felt was a little too rushed in the first installment of this series but I really feel that you get to know both Alya and Storm in “King of The Frost”. Can’t wait for the next one!🔥

If you’re like me and love fairytale adaptations, be sure to check out Emma Hamm’s books, especially “The Otherworld” series!

Considering how much I enjoyed the first book, I was pretty disappointed with this one. I did like the powers these characters had and how Storm and Ayla's magic was so so different from each other, but just worked. I think my biggest issue was that I didn't much like Ayla at all. She just always annoyed me how she never seemed to want to do anything if it didn't involve taking care of her brother's family. And I mean, she was obsessed with that. She literally wanted to spend her whole life taking care of his kids and when they grew up, take care of her brother (mind you, the guy IS married). What the hell kind of life dream is that? As one other character points out, it's pretty much just her being servant to her brother her whole life.

Ayla found out rather young that she was a changeling and was able to learn bits and pieces of information from random fairies that she had encountered. She never desired to know her fairy heritage because as she saw it, she was unwanted by her parents and was simply discarded by them. So it's becoming increasingly annoying how many air fairies keep coming to her to get her to come take back the thrown that is rightfully hers and get rid of the mad king that stole it. Eventually her brother convinces her that it wouldn't hurt anything for her to go check out this king and see if he truly is so bad.

Storm was interesting. His hobby of making perfume was a little...uh, weird...for such a powerful guy. He not only suffers from the elemental that's inside him, but a single touch from him causes the person to become a violent monster. Because of that, his castle is practically empty and it's better that way. Oh, and he also hears the voices of so many dead. Needless to say, his life hasn't turned out the way he thought it would when took the crown.

Despite the fact that most interactions between these two weren't all that exciting or action packed, I will say they seemed to work together. There is a draw between them that they both feel and, even better, Storm can touch Ayla without damning her. But what they mostly do is talk. It was frustrating how Ayla refused to even acknowledge her birthright despite the fact that even Storm was telling her she could have it back. She didn't want to hear about her parents, her past, or anything about her court.

Ayla finally decides to succumb to the desire between the two of them only to leave Storm that morning before he wakes up. Despite the fact that she has every intention on coming back, she takes everything with her except for a picture thinking that he'll understand her meaning in leaving it. Seriously people. Why can't anyone leave a freaking note!? Obviously, Storm misunderstands. And when he starts causing chaos on Earth, Ayla needs to stop him and accept the role she was born for.

A Nanny returns to check on her throne and finds....a Mad King
This story follows Ayla,a changeling, who was sent to live in the human realm and her interactions with the man ruling her kingdom, who happens to be a host to an elemental. I love Ayla. I love how fiercely she loves her nephews. Also, the imagery used to describe the palace is just mind-blowing. You really feel as if your walking amongst the clouds along with Ayla. I was hooked from the beginning and couldn't put it down. That being said it does move a little slower than the first one, but I actually think there are more monumental emotional scenes in this book. Storm was so different Liam. I like how each elemental has their own personality as well. It makes it exceedingly interesting. Storm is a tortured soul, that never realized what he was missing until she arrived. The author's description of the bond between them is perfection. I felt every heartache and passion right along with them. My only criticism of this book is that we never really explore Ayla's parents downfall and what role specifically Storm had in it. But I still thoroughly enjoyed it nonetheless 😊

So I read the first book, pretty ok. With the second book I was expecting so much more. If I read one more time "I'm just a nanny", I would go crazy. Really?! She's a freakin faerie, and a princess no less but she keeps complaining that she is just a nanny. Storm was a good character but I didn't like her at all, too whiny. And really wouldn't you want to know why your parents abandoned you?! To find the answers to your begginings and all?! Not to mention she changes her mind in a second from not wanting to know, to wanting to know everything and making a big fuss about it. You as an author I felt you didn't make a credible character, too weak even though in the beggining I thought quite different about her. And absolutely no interaction between them, no action. They met for a few hours and then each of them were hiding for a few days, how did they actually manage to fall in love?! Sorry I have a long list of things which I did not like but I will stop here. Really I expected more

Ayla is a changeling who tho raised by humans always knowing she was unwanted by the Fae. Frost taking the throne and an elemental, became known as The Mad King.
The world building was once again wonderful. From the maze of glass and flowers, to the "ghostly fae in the castle! I loved that Storm wasn't an "alpha" male, he was a tortured man afraid of who he was. Tho he first appears cruel, there's a reason for it. Ayla is timid at first but soon grows to accept who she is. The relationship between them was tender at times and I loved their connection. I do wish we had learned altitude more about her parents but don't think it would've added much to the story, I'm just nosy!
We've met Liam, now Storm....looking forward to the next story!

Flying high in the Air Court

Hope you aren’t afraid of heights because the gorgeous details of the Air palace are breathtaking and make you feel like your in the sky with the fairies. I like how each court in this series brings you to a completely different world with unique creatures and characters.
Packed with gorgeous details, elementals of immense power and a budding enemies-to-lovers romance with steam.

Loved the icy world and characters

Elizabeth Frost has this series of Beauty and the Beast reimaginings, but I don’t think of them that way - their just good stories! I like that the female character, in this case Ayla, has to deal with their own life issues and figure how to help the males help themselves. I felt like the world in this book truly enhanced the Faerie King’s character and the story. Romantic at a good level.

A good book
Ayla lives with her brothers family and is a nanny or his two boys. She has been in denial of being fae most of her life. While she has the boys at the park, she meets a a badly injured fae who tells her she has to stop the Mad King. She travels to the Court of Air. The floating glass palace is deserted except for a few ghostly beings of former fae and the Mad King, Storm.. The story unfolds to show that trust and love are needed to overcome adversity.

Elizabeth Frost (AKA Emma Hamm) writes the most beautiful stories. She always takes us into her world that she has created as if we were right along side of her.

King of the Frost is no different. It’s a sweet/sexy Fae story. One that you will not want to put down. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Great storylines, must read!

I have only read the first and second books, but really enjoyed them . Fresh take on similar plots, keeps you coming back. Can't wait to read the other books! Definitely a great read. Characters are developed in a way that snags your attention and invites you to invest in them. I would take a bit more heat, but that's just me. Overall a must read!

The first quarter was good but the next quarter was slow. The story didn't really pick up until the last half.

I like the concept and look forward to reading the other books in this series.

Ayla has always known she doesn't belong. As a changeling child, she was abandoned by her Fae parents and raised by humans. She has tried to blend in, forgoing her Fae roots to be close to her human family that she loves. When she is tasked with stopping the chaos wrought by the king of the Air Court, she must face both a king spreading his madness and her past. Can Ayla stop the madness before it spreads to her? Within a castle in the sky, Elizabeth Frost weaves a tale of madness, love, and loss in book 2 of the Seasons of the Fae series: KING OF FROST.

This series continues to be fun and light romance with a bit of fantasy. The setting of book 2 was very unique: an abandoned castle in the clouds. Like with book one, the motives were a bit convoluted, with no clear reason for the presence of the elementals, although Storm's infectious madness was a nice, darker touch. I also enjoyed Storm as a nerdy, reclusive love interested and he provided a lot more depth compared to book 1.

Overall, KING OF FROST was a fun fantasy romance that improved upon book 1 with the right amount of action to balance the narrative. With the unique voices of all the characters, I'm definitely interested in what will be revealed in book 3.
