Red Sonja - the name is enough. You either like or dislike there is no middle path here. If you cringe because of blood, this is not for you.
Probably should say - the name is Sonja, Red Sonja, like the aloof cold war male alter ego, Bond. But back to the book in question, one of the finest volumes in the Red Sonja universe brings together some diverse stories from all over the times. I have been a fan since I first got to read the novels and now graphic novels have become a rage. Fantastic art with many varieties of Sonja in various finery and her basic dress.
The stories in this edition looks curated and are really outstanding. This book is a collection of stories written, drawn, painted, and inked by some legendary names in the business. Not a story out of place. Enjoy
Having never read any Red Sonja before, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Unfortunately, this really didn’t do much for me. Some of the artwork is quite nice, particularly in the final story about dragons, but for the most part the stories were just boring. Watching panel after panel of a near-naked woman slaughtering generic baddie after generic baddie just doesn’t hold my attention.
Not great. This is a series of standalone Sonja tales by a variety of authors. Short story collections are always tough. Overall, the writing isn't good. Sonja, much like Barbie, has so many incarnations, but this seems to focus on man-hater Sonja and murder-pixie Sonja. Those aren't my favorites. I prefer fun-loving adventure Sonja and righteous-avenger Sonja.
"Exploitation feminism" is a term that's been kicking around in cultural and gender studies journals for a little while, and Red Sonja seems to fit the bill.
