Nicole first discovered romance novels hidden in her grandmother’s closet. Convinced hidden books must be better, Nicole greedily read them. It was only natural she should start writing them (but now not so secretly). If she isn’t working on the next book in her historical series, she can’t be found. No, seriously. Because she’s always working on the next story!

Intrigue, Adventure, and Ravishing Romance

📚 Series? Yes, can be read as a standalone.
📚 Genre? Adult > Historical Romance
📚 Reviewed for? #NetgalleyNovember #30DayReviewChallenge Day 25

I came into this book with zero expectations and I left with a precious experience that brought me to the past.

The Maiden and the Mercenary revolves around the said characters and their journey in the midst of each of their own agendas and attraction/love getting in the way. This book touches on the forbidden romance theme, with secretive moments that deliver passion and intense romantic scenes.

Admittedly, it took me some time to get into the book, as I have to immerse myself in this kind of world. Plus, even the character names are hard to get used to (I don't even know how to pronounce them!!)

There's no denying, though, that the author writes beautifully. The scenes are well thought of and action-filled. The book delivered more than a romance, it has betrayal and mystery and lies and thrill!

Overall, it was a good read. It was a good introduction to Nicola Locke's work and I'm interested to see her other titles.

When we last saw Louve of Mei Solis, he had resigned his position as Usher to Nicholas and had joined Reynold of Warstone as a mercenary. And now he has been sent on a new mission – invade the holding of Reynold’s brother, Ian and find the parchment pertaining to the fabled Jewell of Kings. In addition to his mission, he has been tasked with protecting Reynold’s youngest brother – Balthus – who has recently reconciled with Reynold. Louve knows that dealing with the Warstones is tricky – they are a complex, deadly group who play games with peoples lives and seemingly have no consciences. He convinces Balthus to stay in hiding, while he enters the fortress and hopefully secures work. As luck would have it, the steward hires him on the spot and then bolts – leaving Louve to deal with a drunken free for all in the kitchens.

Biedeluue “Bied” is at the fortress to rescue her sister Margery, who is Ian’s mistress. She is trying to find a way to see her and after two weeks, has had no luck. She first meets Louve when he comes upon her and another servant in the middle of a drinking game. She can’t believe how handsome he is and even in her drunken state, knows that he is not who or what he claims to be.

She is drawn to him and he to her, but neither trusts easily and when in the company of Warstones, one cannot afford to lose focus. Ian soon makes it clear that he is on to both Louve and Bied and pulls them into his game and to complicate things even more, Balthus “arrives” with his evil parents. Now, not only does Louve have to complete his mission, but he also has to protect Balthus from his family and the woman he loves from becoming a pawn in Ian’s games.

This was a very complex and at times mystifying story. It is well written, but it is really not a story you can skim or read quickly there is A LOT going on and it is not always easy to keep track of who is the bad guy – the Warstones are a truly evil family – think the Borgias – and the brothers have been set against each other since birth – but at times you can’t help but feel sorry for them. I did enjoy the inactions between Louve and Bied, their banter was fun and their love scenes bordered on spicy. In addition to that, this book has murder, secrets, lies, betrayal, poison, villains galore, warm love scenes and a well deserved HEA. This is the 10th book in the series and I would recommend reading the books in order.

A maiden and a mercenary fall in love while pretending to be servants in a tyrant's home.

The Maiden and The Mercenary by Nicole Locke is book #10 in the Lovers and Legends series.

In 1297 France, Biedeluue's sister, the mistress of a mighty and cold man (Ian Warstone), wrote asking for rescue. Trying to find a way to extricate her sister from the man's fortress, Bied applied for a job there and worked as a servant.

Meanwhile, Louve of Mei Solis, a mercenary hired by Ian's brother, also infiltrated the fortress, pretending to be a servant to retrieve a crucial parchment piece.

There was great chemistry between Bied and Louve, but they were both on a mission and had very different hopes and dreams for the future.

I had a little hard time following the intricate power game played by the Warstone Family (hence I wished I had read the previous books of the series), but I still enjoyed the romance.

Bied was intense and a little wild. Louve was honorable and sweet, my favorite kind of mercenary (lol).

The Maiden and The Mercenary is a fast-paced and adventurous medieval romance with a strong heroine and a lovely hero.

Disclosure: I received an ARC of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The Maiden And The Mercenary
By: Nicole Locke

REVIEW ☆☆☆☆

The Maiden And The Mercenary, tenth in Nicole Locke's Lovers and Legends series, is a solid historical fiction Medieval novel. Bied, pretending to be a servant, is on a mission to save her sister. Louve is a man with his own hidden agenda. Two people working undercover happen to find each other. Bied and Louve have a relationship that builds over time, and that is much better than instalove. This story has everything you would expect from dashing swoon worthy moments to mysterious intrigues and was enjoyable to read. The question is what takes precedence-the initial mission or a possible romance interest? Duty or love? There are also menacing players who are unpredictable, so anything is possible!

𝗠𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄

A tale of finding one’s home.

Be forewarned, this is a complex tale with from one side, a family fighting one another, a feud orchestrated by a mother between her sons to be the one holding all the power, then on the other side, what love for one’s family will make some sacrifice.
I confess the beginning was quite messy for me to enter in this story as the introduction chapters were told from a drunken woman point of view.
Yet once Bied and Louve work in concert, everything makes sense.

Louve, is a recurring character from previous stories, I understand who he is, a hired hand when people need more blades to fight. He has a dream and when part of it was shattered, he changed path with still the hope to one day make it true.
But Biedeluue ( curious to know how it is pronounced), I struggle to put her in a box, it is difficult to comprehend her complex personality. Her past is quite a riddle, but also it made her the strong being she is now. She paid the price of others greed, but she was willing if it could protect those she protected and cared for.

This story has many lead wires all intricating with one another, meddling the line of one with an other to finally blur everything.
At time, I felt sorry for the brothers who have been doomed from the beginning, even the “bad one” was only a pawn in someone else game.
Louve and Bied emerge victorious because what ever they had to compromise it was not for power but survival.

As soon as I met Louve in the previous books, I was fascinated by the caring yet brutal mercenary, there was something hugely enthralling about him and I have been looking forward to his story for a long time. Louve crept under my defences and has plagued me from the moment of meeting him, I would have probably had a temper tantrum if he didn’t get a story of his own, but thankfully he did get a story which has made this little reviewer incredibly happy – plus no temper tantrums 😉

The Maiden and the Mercenary is the tenth book in the thrilling and ever-so-romantic; Lovers and Legends series, I can’t believe there have been ten books already, amazing! You can easily read each book as a stand-alone, I am speaking from experience as I did come into this series pretty late and have yet to read the first ones but I have loved each and everyone I have read so far.

The story opens in 1297, where the ‘Warstone War‘ is still going strong – for those who have been following this series will know all about the Warstones – if this is your first Nicole Locke book don’t worry this is well and truly a stand-alone everything you need to know about the nefarious Warstones is right here.

Louve of Mei Solis, ruthless, hardened, jaded and easily the sexiest mercenary in town has been tasked to infiltrate the deadly Warstone lair and retrieve a crucial parchment piece (I won’t say too much about that as it is linked to the Lovers and Legend overall story) but going into the lion’s den especially being who he is will be hugely deadly, not more so once Ian Warstone knows of his presence and the games begin. But Our lovely Louve isn’t one to be intimidated he is the one who does the intimidating but even he knows one wrong move in this game of chess could lead to his and his men’s death. Once inside the castle he soon finds an unlikely ally, but what is it that his beautiful ally is hiding?

Biedluue has her own mission, she won’t allow this stranger who comes bursting in and starts barking orders at everyone, to get in her way. She – like Louse – has smuggled herself into the castle with one thing in mind, and that is to rescue her beloved sister from the beastly clutches of that devil; Warstone. As you can see both Louve and Biedluue have the same enemy, but can they trust each other enough to help one and other?

The overall plot and romance didn’t disappoint, I did have my own issue (which I will discuss later) but there is so much to love about The Maiden and the Mercenary; that much loved edgy, lustful and tense chemistry between the characters which leaps of the page as you read. The intricate and compelling plotline which dazzles, plus some serious swooning hero love coming from yours-truly 😉

The romance between Louve and Biedeluue really crackles with unrequited lust and want, there is a shimmer of star-dust which surrounds them. Yet – and I do hate to say anything negative about these books, but I have always vowed to always be honest – I actually struggled to get into the story at first. It took quite a huge part of the begging of the book for everything to slot into place for me to start to love it, personally the first six or so chapters felt a little muddled to me, I felt there was a wee bit too much pushed into such a short space in the beginning and that’s what I struggled with especially with the amount of character’s which sort of bombard you in that first scene with Louve and Biedeluue.

To be perfectly honest I was a little surprised that it took me so long to really fall in love with this book as I had been looking forward to Louve’s story for so long, and I hate to say it but I was a little disappointed with not getting that instant buzz which I usually do with these books. But, everything fell into place eventually and then I ‘got’ what Locke was doing in the beginning, she was building up the tension, the relationship between characters and pushing both our main character’s personal reasons for being in the castle at the reader early so you could enjoy the ride later. (Does that make sense? Well it does to me)

I have to mention the names, I really love them, I can’t for the life of me figure out how to pronounce Biedeluue properly, I’m sure that I am pronouncing it completely wrong – which isn’t nothing new for me, I am terrible with names – it fits her character’ perfectly too.

Serving woman, Biedeluue, is doing all she can to try to rescue her sister, Margery from the clutches of the evil, Ian of Warstone. However, when Bied comes into contact with the enigmatic mercenary, Louve of Mei Solis, who is posing as the castle usher, she is ill prepared for the effect that this man has on her peace of mind. That Louve is not who he says he is adds a certain piquancy to what is, after all, quite a complex medieval adventure.

Filled with an array of rather dastardly villains the story takes some getting used to but once I had the characters firmly in place I found the story moved along at quite a fast pace. I enjoyed getting to know both Bied and Louve, both are complicated characters, and whilst their attraction to each other is obvious, they each have other, more important, things to worry about. However, as with all medieval adventures, nothing is going to run smoothly for this couple in this complicated tale of family politics and whilst I can't say too much for fear of spoiling, I can add that I was intrigued by the complexity of the overall plot.

The author is an accomplished historical fiction writer and brings to the story a distinct air of medieval skulduggery and an interesting sense of time and place. The Maiden and the Mercenary is now the tenth book in the Lovers and Legend series of historical novels which can all be read as standalone stories but as with all series it is better to start at the beginning to see just how the story line progresses through the medieval timeline.

I'm always surprised with all the possibilities that historical romance authors come up for their stories. Nicole Locke has so many plots and interesting characters that a historical romance lover like me can't resist.

In this novel, part of the Lovers and Legends series, we get to met mercenary Louve of Mei Solis and the beautiful maiden Biedeluue. Okay, first of all, epic names. They are unique and hard to miss. Second, a mercenary? When I saw that word in the title I as so excited about what kind of person he was going to be, and I was not disappointed. I love their interactions and the goals they have.

The story is an adventure, I love how the characters had hidden agendas and motivations behind their actions. I love the legendary treasure map element as well with the saving a damsel in distress. I loved the danger and the action. And I certainly love the romance and how it developed.

Overall, it was a book that grabbed my attention from page one. A novel filled with secrets, excitement, deception, drama, danger, love and family.

Bentornate Fenici!

Note réelle 4,5/5.

I read a lot of general historical fiction, and The Maiden and the Mercenary certainly rivals a lot of them in terms of attention to detail and family plotting and drama.

I almost can't believe how much intrigue and conspiracy there was in the story, and it kept me gripped. I absolutely loved the background conflict of the Warstones and the tension it lent to the story.

I love that although there is an instant attraction between Bied and Louve, it takes a while to come into fruition. They have Very Sure Ideas of themselves and what they want. Bied thinks pretty much only about saving her sister, and Louve is all about getting the job done and getting out of there.

One of my favourite things was the slow change of the relationship between Bied and Louve. It evolves on page so subtly that I almost didn't realise it had happened until the end. There is so much passion and lust between them, and it gradually builds in to more.

The Maiden and the Mercenary is an absolutely excellent read and I'd recommend it to all fans of medieval historical romance. I'd love to read more about Bied and Louve as they're such a compelling couple.

I liked the overall plot with the suspense, mystery, action, and the treasure map, but the romance just didn’t do it for me. I felt like the romance was more focused on the physical side instead of the emotional side. Yes, he was trying to protect her, and he began to care for her, but I didn’t feel like it. Was this ever ending. Love story. There needed to be a lot more there before I could’ve bought it. But I love that they were both on two different missions that collide and bring them into contact with one another. I liked seeing how they navigated this dangerous situation and did so together.

I thought that this story was enjoyable but I did feel that it was a little sketchy in places at the start regarding who was who in the story and it look me a little bit of time for me to get in to it - as the story progressed it did become clearer but my attention was a little wavering by then

I thought that the characters were strong and well developed and they were enjoyable and I liked getting to know them. The storyline was ok and the mix of action and romance was good.

It is 3 stars from me for this one.

The Maiden and the Mercenary is a book full of intrigue, following Louve and Bied’s stay in a fortress surrounded by mystery.

The characters in the book were good, especially Louve, although I found Bied to be a bit too conflicted with her own thoughts at times.

The mystery and intrigue elements in the story were interesting whilst being pretty intense and the secondary characters added a richness to the story.

‼️ BOOK REVIEW ‼️

The Maiden and the Mercenary by Nocole Locke

Kindly #gifted by @rachelsrandomresources @nicolelockeauthor @millsandboonuk THANK YOU 💖

⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

This was my first Mills & Boon book and I was a little unsure as to what to expect, but I found that I thoroughly enjoyed it! At the beginning it took me a little while to get to grips with the different roles within the castle and who was who but it slotted into place. I loved Bied's character of being a strong, independent woman and I definitely swooned over Louve!! I enjoyed the fact that despite the romance and sexual tensions that they both had their own agendas and the romance didn't get in the way of it. I will definitely be keeping my eyes open for more books by this author.

Who to trust?

Biedeluue is working as a maiden in a fortress, with the sole purpose of rescuing her sister from the hands of the malevolent lord’s clutches.
Yet when Louve appears as the new servant, she finds it hard to resist the attraction. But Louve is not who he seems to be… he is mercenary Louve of Mei Solis, and has also an own agenda.
Will their attraction compromise their tasks? And who can they trust when it becomes clear that there is more going on in the fortress than initially thought?

I have read several books of this author and I must say, this one is the most confusing one!
Let me elaborate…
There is so much going on in this story, so many people with a secret agenda and secrets, that I just didn’t know who to trust and who not.
The moment I thought I had it all figured out, something else would happen and I lost my trust all over again.

Yet the story between Louve and Biedeluue was again spot on!
Despite what I initially thought, Biedeluue is not a damsel in distress. She does not need a knight (or mercenary) in shining armour. She wants to save her sister, and does not need the help from anyone else.
Even when Louve offers his help, she sticks to her own plan as she knows what is at stake…
And she knows what she wants for her own future and is not letting someone change her mind.

Louve is as expected a real Alpha – male. He takes charge of tings, and he decides how the operations should be going. Of course he is a mercenary, so he has knowledge of how to handle some situations.
When these two characters are together, the attraction is very obvious and even if they are very different and want different things, they just can’t stay away from each other. This couple is for me the perfect example of how opposites attract!

But it’s not only the attraction that made me like this story. It’s obvious that these people have their heart at the right place. The lengths Biedeluue goes for her sister, is admirable. And when she doesn’t understand her sister, she tries to understand, no matter how difficult it is. And together with Louve she tries to find a solution that will please everyone.

And the trust Louve has in some people, is also admirable. He says it himself, to earn someone trusts is not an easy task, but when he trusts someone, he is a real friend and he protects that friend risking his own life!

The both of them have endured several things in their lives, and those events made them to the persons they are now. Some things that initially made me frown, became clear once the truth was out. And it made me understand the characters even better.

But the most difficult part for me was understanding how to pronounce the names correctly! I was saying them at loud, but no matter how I pronounced them, they all sounded wrong to me! So, for me, it was not about Biedeluue and Louve, but just ‘Bee’ and ‘Lou’ 😁.

This story was very entertaining, with sweet, hot moments but also moment that made me gasp, with action and intrigues.

It’s safe to say that Nicole Locke took me on quite a journey with Bied and Louve. Bied loves her family and because of this she is determined to save her sister. Biding her time as a servant until she can put a plan in place. Things seem even more complicated when Louve arrives but she soon realises that maybe he can help after all. Louve is a brilliant character, a mercenary on a mission but so much more than that too. Even though he is stuck right in the middle of a dangerous and manipulative family he is determined to complete his mission. Both of these characters had strong personalities which made them the perfect match! Their interactions were lively especially that very first meeting. It definitely brought a smile to my face and from that moment their chemistry just builds making everything so much more interesting to see play out.

The Maiden and the Mercenary moves at a lovely pace and easily kept me invested throughout. The risky and dangerous mission that Louve has committed to was great at keeping me on my toes. The Warstone family really helped to bring an extra menace to the story as you never can quite tell what they will do next! I do have to mention that this book is part of the Lovers and Legends series and while I do think it works as a standalone. To get a better understanding of the power play and overall manipulations within the Warstone family it might be beneficial to read some of the previous books. Plus it really is a great series!

The Maiden and the Mercenary is a wonderful story filled with romance and danger.

The Maiden and the Mercenary was an engaging story by Nicole Locke. A mercenary and maiden with their own agenda's work together to find a legendary treasure map. Enemies become friends and their undeniable attraction and passion lead to love. Louve and Biedeluue were wonderful characters.
