Narrator: Michael Fox.

Running time: 2hrs 27 mins.

"Don't you see? It's magic every time you touch me."

Audio review:

To be honest I probably wasn't the best person to review this.I hadn't listened to an entire Audio before, having only tried samples with no success....so I had no idea what to expect or compare it to.

It took me a few chapters to really get on board with it but the first thing that struck me was a lot of detail that I'm sure I didn't appreciate reading the book. The second thing that stood out was that listening to it took so much longer than reading it and I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing to be honest.

In my opinion the narrator did an excellent job.Every single voice was distinctive,at no point did I question which character it was.I was more than a bit worried about listening to sex scenes for some reason but I shouldn't have worried-they were perfectly narrated with a lot of feeling.

So my first Audio was definitely a success.Would I be in a hurry to read more? I'm still not sure ...

My rating is 4 Stars.

Original review:

I get quite giddy when I see Kasia Bacon has written another story in her truly engaging Order Universe. She's fast becoming my favourite Author in the fantasy genre. She has created some amazing couples who I absolutely always fall in love with.

From the beautiful scene settings, the addictive plots, the loveable characters, these short stories never fail to deliver.

Barbarian fighter Yuuzuki is resigned to his fate-he has one final match which he knows will only end one way.Time and circumstances are against him.His one wish is the safety of his lover, healer Haiatto.

“You’re everything I could’ve dreamed of. Everything I’ve ever needed. Perfect. You’re perfect. I want you to remember this. I just wish so damn much that I could love you for a little bit longer.”

Together for years, their love for each other might not have been vocalized yet but they both know it exsists and Haiatto is determined to do whatever he can to save his lover-but what will the price be?

Tell me, would you follow me if I found a way out?” His answer came in a heartbeat. “I would,” he said. “Anywhere.”

I adored this story,I loved these two men but damn I wanted more.

Prepare to be transported into the mystical, fascinating world Kasia Bacon has created once more in Don't Fight the Spark-you'll fall in love all over again....

Loved the book but the audio is even better.

Original review: Edited version

Why did I ever fight the spark??? 😳 Seriously!?!?! Why did !? 😁 I’ll tell you why .. I love Miss Kasia Bacon’s writing. I really really do. 💜 I think she writes the most beautiful, poignant and sophisticated proses when it comes to fantasy and romance. But we also know that she’s the queen of shorties. (No pun intended 😏 ... wait .. I actually did 😂) Anyhow, though I loved each and every one of her previous stories, I was kinda afraid that this is going to be another shortie with a sequel. And that’s why it took a while for me to pick up this book but boy, was I wrong. 😅 This is by far, the most complete and sexiest story Miss Bacon has ever written. 🔥 I believe only she has the ability to write “performing fellatio” to be beautiful, pure and yet innocently titillating. It was a glorious reading experience. 😍

The love story between Yüu and Haiatto was really beautiful and heartwarming. The forbidden love story between a state-owned pit fighter and black sheep of a magic healer, the odds were really set against them. But of course, love did win over everything in the end. And as Yüu would said wherever he can hold And love Haiatto every night is home.

Michael Fox did a fantastic job narrating this lovely story. I mean I loved it when I read it but I loved it even more when I listened it. Highly recommended to anyone who loves fantasy with healthy amount of romance and swoon-worthy moments! 🥰❤️😘

Yay, another new story from The Order universe!

I had no idea this story was even coming out until, lo and behold, it showed up in my Inbox, after which a small 'squee' (or three) may have been heard. "Allegedly."

Kasia's stories never fail to pull me in, with her well-crafted wordsmithery and intriguing characters.

In this new 85'ish page novella, the story was all about hidden love and lengths to which one might go to keep it from ending, when faced with your partner's impending mortal peril.

You see, healer and magic wielder Haiatto had been secretly partnered with pit fighter Yuu for the past three years, mending his broken warrior on a regular basis, as his fights became progressively more brutal.

Yuu was a crowd favorite, but since he'd gone undefeated for several years, gambling profits for the owners of the Lyling Fighting House had gone down, causing them to pit Yuu against several fighters at once to keep the crowd entertained.

But during the upcoming Light Festival, there was a scheduled closed fight with Yuu facing even more simultaneous opponents, some armed, which was basically a death sentence, a fact that both Yuu and Haiatto both realized.

So as Yuu healed from his last fight, Haiatto began to scheme as to how he might save his beloved from certain death.

As always, the world building in this story was superb, incorporating yet another layer of complexity to the already-vibrant Order universe, this time by adding some actual magic.

Previous Order shorts felt a bit more light than this one, since one of the MC's had his head on the proverbial chopping block, but the romance and some humor from a few of the side characters (including furia Eryssa from "The Poison Within") kept the mood from becoming overly-dark.

There was also some mild steam in the book, slightly more than I remember from her other shorts, but it was handled in a way that added to the romance and feelings vs. a cheap attempt at titillation.

The story ended with what felt like Yuu and Haiatto being on their way to an HEA, but the world of The Order is a dangerous place, so I was left crossing my fingers and sending them happy thoughts in relation to their fate.

Kasia's books *always* leave me wanting more, so it's no huge surprise that this 4.25 star read left me feeling precisely that way. Again. *sigh*

Told in single POV, 1st person, it's the first installment in the "Soldiers And Mercenaries" series. This was my first read by this author and I read it because of all the good reviews. It was a good read but still something was missing and I can't put my finger on what exactly! It was a quick easy read. Overall, I liked it and hope you enjoy it as well!

5 Hearts!

Gods. The more I read about this world and it's varied inhabitants, the more I want and crave and need.

Continued complexity in this intriguing fantastical universe, slowly weaving an intricate piece of the grand puzzle as all of Bacon’s stories are intertwined and connected and as usual, this was just not enough!!

I don’t want to give much away, but this was a tender, emotional story of two lovers, one resigned to his fate, the other desperately determined to subvert it and bend it to his will against impossible odds. This also gives us a glimpse of the infamous Grandmaster Assassin of The Order itself, Lu Feninghan, and I can’t wait for his story. There’d better be a story!!

This technically isn’t a stand alone, and though I haven't read all of Bacon’s works, I don’t think one could go wrong with publishing order, and I'm going to rectify that soon and read the other two I was holding off on. The author herself recommends at least reading The Poison Within first, and I totally concur. Enjoy!

This is one of my favorite books by Kasia.

Originally read April 2019

It's no secret I'm a huge Kasia Bacon stalker fan. I've said before she could write the dictionary and I'd read it, love it, and 5 star it while crying, laughing, or swooning. This was no different.

Set in the Order Universe, we get a little magic, a little holiday, some steam, and, of course, the baddie.

We have Yüu, a fighter trapped with no way out but death. And Ĥaiatto, a healer who will stop at nothing to save the man he loves from that certain death. What we end up with is an absolutely beautiful love story.
"If there were a chance…or even half a chance for us to be safe and together, w-would you take it? Tell me, would you follow me if I found a way out?” His answer came in a heartbeat. “I would,” he said. “Anywhere.”

"You’re everything I could’ve dreamed of. Everything I’ve ever needed. Perfect. You’re perfect. I want you to remember this. I just wish so damn much that I could love you for a little bit longer.”~Yüu

This is just a short novella, but true to Bacon's MO, you don't realize it until the end. How she does it, I'll never know, but she creates these stories that read as if they are full-length novels.

I'll be not-so-patiently waiting for whatever she comes up with next.

Audio – 5 Stars!! Michael Fox is a new to me narrator and his performance won me over!
Story – 4.25 I Felt the Spark Stars!!

I’m not a fan of short stories because more times than not they are rushed and/or under developed. Of course, there are always a few exceptions and this book was definitely one of them.

Not only was the world building, and pacing very well done, there was no denying the connection between MCs. It left me signing contentedly. I not only fell in love with the characters, but with the writing as well. Did I wish it was longer? Heck yeah! Because I never want a good thing to end. 😁

Even with cameo appearances of characters from other books, I’m comfortable saying the audiobook can be listened to as a standalone. I didn’t feel lost at all, but now I want audiobooks for all the books in The Order Universe and more of Michael Fox.😍

It's no secret I absolutely adore this author's writing style. So of course I was super excited when I found out about this new novella.

The writing is extraordinary, as always! I enjoyed the dynamics better the main characters. As we are already used by now, Kasia Bacon has some of the most unique names for her characters.

This novella has something magical. Both main characters have amazing abilities, one can heal through magic and one could fight like no other. Their love story was endearing. Both were afraid to fight but they were more afraid to be without the other.
I really love this book's title! It has such a sweet meaning. Loved the beautiful ending and I am looking forward to reading more from this author!!!

Ĥaiatto Ẽkana and Yüuzuki Ōren have been lovers, in secret, for three years. Always being cautious because the grandson of the head of Lyliňg Fighting House is a vengeful jerk who, for some reason, has had it in for Yüu for three long years. Ĥaiatto and Yüu live on stolen moments, and as much as Ĥaiatto wishes for more, he fears the worst is yet to come.

Ĥaiatto is a healer and his duties include patching up fighters from the Fighting House, including Yüu. Unlike his family, for whom magic is second nature, Ĥaiatto is but a Spark -- one who can wield magic, but can not produce it. He left his homeland so that he wouldn't have that constant reminder.

A hostage to the state, Yüu has no choice but to fight, but he has honor as well as skill, and no matter what gets thrown his way, he prevails. Yüu has been undefeated since he started fighting at Lyliňg Fighting House. Lately, however, his fights have been getting more and more violent, and less and less fair, and if nothing can be done, Yüu will lose more than just his next fight.

Don't Fight the Spark is gripping and engaging and romantic. From the very first sentence, I was sucked right in. Kasia Bacon does what so few authors manage -- she can write a short story, so complete, that, while you will want more, the story is full. And while this novella is longer than her usual fare, I definitely want more. I love her stories so much, it's no surprise I loved this one as well!

The Order Universe is rich and colorful. It's full of magic and delight. And love. Never ever forget love. It's worth fighting for, after all!

Love this universe. Love Kasia Bacon’s writing. Loved Yüu and Haiatto.
As always – there’s so much on offer in such a short page count!
You never feel cheated just because these novellas are shorter than a book.
And thank you, dear author, for the glossary at the end. Loved reading through it to get my bearings again!

And yes *fist bump*, the next one is longer and I’m diving straight in!

How? Kasia Bacon nails these novellas every single time. They're chock full of everything you would hope for in a full novel without ever feeling rushed. The writing is rich and detailed, characters well fleshed out, just the right amount of angsty feels and characters you can't help but fall for.

She's a bloody genius!

These books are short and they don’t have complicated plots , they’re rather simple , yet they’re so romantic and their MCs are so tender, intense and sensual…. Or maybe it’s the writing, I don’t know. I just know that I fell in love with all these MCs with every book in this universe.

Honestly I don't know how she does it.

I call Kasia My Queen of the Fantasy Short Story because in just a few pages (around 85 ish here) she crafts such amazing characters and world building and nothing feels rushed.

Her Order Universe is such a joy to travel in, and here we bump into Healer Haiatto, last seen saving the day in The Poison Within when he was on hand to heal Master Enforcer Sashe, and discover his fears for his fighter lover Yuu.

Also popping in are the utterly brilliant Furia Eryssa, enigmatic vamper Revendi and the completely fascinating and dangerous Grand Master of the Assassin's Guild Lu Feninghan.

So, not quite Red and his Sergeant yet or more from our elvish Scouts, but I'll absolutely take anything from the pen of Kasia.

As a PS: How gorgeous is this cover?!

I only have one problem with Kasia Bacon’s stories, they’re too damn SHORT! *sigh* As usual, I loved it. This author’s ability to make you love and care for her characters in such a short space of pages is nothing short of the magic that fills the universe she writes her stories in. Once again, I look forward to anything she might write.

OMG... now that was perfection. Plenty of happy tears at the end too! Ms. Bacon's words flow out like pure poetry. Her characters so clearly and beautifully drawn they just burst off the page. My only complaint is that she always leaves me desperate for more. Truly an amazing talent with the written word!

"Don't fight the Spark" is a novella set in the Order Universe, like the previous ones, and it can be read as a standalone. The MCs are new and this time we get a story about an established couple instead of a new one.

Pit fighter Yüuzuki Ōren has been through a lot in his life and even though he is a skilled fighter, he knows that one day he will die in the arena.
Ĥaiatto Ẽkana is a healer with the ability to control magic, he's a Spark and not a Mage as he can't create it himself but has to depend on a source in order to use his abilities.

Yüu and Ĥaiatto have been together in secret for three years but their lives are ruled by so much uncertainty that even thought they love each other they haven't found the courage to share that information or define who they are to each other.

When the higher ups start scheduling Yüu's fights in increasingly uneven ways, they know the time has come for them to either give up or fight for a change. With Yüu severely injured after his latest fight and in need of recuperation, Ĥaiatto takes it upon himself to find a way out for both of them.

The story takes place over three days and through Ĥaiatto's efforts to arrange a way for them to get out of the Fighting House we get to know them and where they came from.

As always, Kasia Bacon was able to produce a full story with in depth characters in just a few pages. I look forward to the next books and of course the continuation of Lochan and Ervyn's story because don't think that I have forgotten about them. They're my favourite!

Short review which apparently applies to all Kasia’s books.

It’s detailed, atmospheric and beautifully written leaving you wanting more.

Longer review.

This one involves Ĥaiatto from The Poison Within. Ĥaiatto is a Spark, a healer who works at The Lyliňg Fighting House. He’s in love with their best fighter Yüuzuki. Yüu is invincible and a favourite in the pits. Fighting is brutal and there’s only one rule.

The matches between ih’mohrôs weren’t governed by any rules save for one—no weapons, just bare hands.

So when Yüu is hauled into the treatment room with stab wounds Ĥaiatto knows something is wrong. Yüu knows his next fight will be his last. He’s just fought seven ih’mohrôs including one with a knife.

“It’s bad, Ĥaiatto,” he said in a hushed voice. “Yüuzuki’s been set up against more and more ih’mohrôs. They’re testing to see how many he can take down at once. Tonight he won, but in the end, he’ll get ripped to shreds. Especially if they continue arming his opponents to make more of a spectacle of it.”
I could swear I’d developed arrhythmia on the spot. “How many did he fight?” I whispered, not really wanting to hear the answer.
“Seven. Including one with a blade.”
“Seven,” I repeated with horror.

Takano Lyliňg wants him dead and it looks like he’s just convinced his grandfather to give him the go ahead.

Ĥaiatto is terrified he can’t let this happen but how can he stop it?

This is another absolutely fabulous read. As with all Kasia’s books it feels much longer than it’s actual length.

While this longer than most of the others it still wasn’t long enough. I suspect when it comes to this author and this series I’ll always say that.

I was kindly provided with an arc copy of this book by the author in exchange for my fair and honest review.

Original review:

Love the tittle and its dual meaning.

Love the concept of spark by itself and how they use their magic.

Love Kasia’s introduction because it is so Kasia and so clarifying and useful: the author recommends the readers starting the journey with The Poison Within and its little bonus A Little Bite to Eat and I agree with the rec.

Love how these short stories are little windows to a fantastic and beautiful world. Little because of the length, and little because we have a main character who allows us to see through his/her eyes. But these are little peeks and glances of the whole wonderful thing. The big picture is so great and interesting that these shorties are not enough (and at the same time, they are... it’s a complicated relationship the one I have with this series). We have these stunning and swooning glimpses into other characters you want to know in deep (very, very deep).

Love how in Don't Fight the Spark we can we witness a love story that it’s already settled and formed but, at the same time, for us it’s not: we’re knowing them for the first time and it contains all the emotion even if they already know and love each other. This is not a easy thing to achieve, not at all, because usually a reader wants to know how the main characters met; those first looks and touches, the flirt, the beginning of everything... But here, there’s no need for that, and the emotion is still there. That’s a huge gift and Kasia Bacon has it.

Love how different the main couple is and how the eminent death of one of them is making their love and need come into the open: they were together but they didn’t know what the other felt, how great was the need and love. It’s beautiful.

Love how easy Kasia shows us the toughness of society and the fighting itself: people love you until they not. Pretty simple and horrible. People love you wining until the love your blood more. It’s awful, but that's life and sadly not just in fiction.

Love the intricate universe the author has built. I know I’ve said this before but it is so detailed, so attractive and so powerful I have to praise it again. It mixes love, politics, conflict and fantasy in a way only a few writers (makers in general) can, and it’s amazing.

Who wouldn’t love a tale about fighters, healers and magic involving pirates, vampires and assassins. Oh let me show my delight here: Revendi —the alchemist vampire— and The Grand Master Assassin of The Order: Lu Feninghan, are pure gold and a dream I need to come true, Kasia? Pretty please? As soon as possible?

Ah, I forgot to say: love the stellar appearance of one of my favorite characters in this universe but I won’t ruin the surprise, so my lips are sealed (a few spoiler-ish tips if you want them: it´s a she, is gorgeous and strong, and sarcastic, and attractive as hell, and... and a lot of things for the little she's on page).

Summarizing: A great addition to The Order Series and a highly recommend read!

Oh, damn! She did it again!!! 💜💛💚💙
I really couldn't fight the Spark and I stayed up until 3 am (skipping some bits and pieces, I admit) just to see if Haiatto manages to save his Yuu...
I'm going to re-read it immediately, LOL.

AFTER THE RE-READ:

I don't know how Kasia does it but she has me hooked each time I start reading something of her creation...

This story was simply beautiful. It was short enough to swallow it at one go, and long anough for me to fall for both Haiatto the Healer, and Yuu the Barbarian.
The Order Universe serves very well as the background here, even though we have no Elves in this book. Nevertheless, Haiatto Ekana, the Healer of the Lyling Fighting House is as clever and fierce and courageous as any elven warrior we've previously met. And Yuuzuki Oren, the Barbarian top fighter, is privately as caring and gentle towards his Haiatto, as he is strong and fearless in the pits.

I have no big words for Don't Fight the Spark because it simply takes my breath away how skilfully Kasia creates such precise, gem-like stories full of passion and love and affection.
So, it's official! Kasia Bacon has become one of my Absolutely Favourite Authors. I've loved all her books so far!
Highly recommended, guys!!!

They brought him to me bloodied and beaten to a pulp....

...and just like that, from the very first sentence, I was hooked to the story.

Kasia Bacon is a very talented author. One of her special talents is that however short or long a story she writes, she never fails to make me care deeply for her characters. It was no different with Haiatto and Yuu, whose affair is doomed to an early demise.

Their enemies are determined to destroy their happiness but they failed to take under consideration a very stubborn Healer....

A very engaging story in the Order Universe with a variety of creatures and magic as always... I love how the author gives us bits and pieces of this world with every book but I wished they weren't so short and sparse apart.

Kasia Bacon satisfies my fantasy cravings with her short stories. The balance between the fantastic and romantic elements is just right. I absolutely loved the feels. *.*
“Fighting’s the only thing I know. It’s what I do.”“Not with me, it isn’t,”I huffed. “No. I stand no chance fighting you,”he agreed after a pause, likely indulging me. “Besides, it wouldn’t be a fair match. I’m trained to use my head and muscles. Not my heart, like you.”

“If I could offer a lantern for a blessing bestowed upon me this past year, it would be lit for you,”he said. “I’m thankful for every moment you’ve spent with me. For your every kiss. Every smile you’ve given me.”

“You’re everything I could’ve dreamed of. Everything I’ve ever needed. Perfect. You’re perfect. I want you to remember this. I just wish so damn much that I could love you for a little bit longer.”

This one, just like The Poison Within portrays an established couple.
It's recommended to read that short story first with the bonus content at the end.

Don’t Fight the Spark starts a new series within Kasia Bacon’s Order Universe, but also crosses over with previous books. The author recommends reading The Poison Within and A Late Bite to Eat before reading this and I would agree. I also found it helpful to be familiar with this world in general and see how these characters fit in. The author also states that she enjoys writing these books, “…in the manner that resembles revealing a new piece of a puzzle with every release.” And, that would explain somewhat of why the books in this world seem to move around in regard to characters and place.

This book is a little bit longer than some of the others and Bacon has the ability to pull me completely into this world from the first word. She is able to pack a full story into a shorter amount of space and each scene, each sentence, is handled with great care. We get caught up on the background of both men quickly and fully with a few well-crafted sentences and learn how their love story started.

Everything works in this story, from the pacing, to the tension, to the intrigue of all the characters and the world they inhabit, as well as the title itself. This is a fantastic fantasy series that never fails to deliver and always leaves me wanting more. While I do wish each installment was a little longer, I now look forward to once again spending more time in this world.

One would think by now having read and fallen in love with every book Kasia Bacon has released that I would get used to this feeling. One would think but one would be wrong. Each and every story, though familiar with the world of The Order is brand new and I fall for each couple just as fast and hard. It only took me reading the first page to feel how much Ĥaiatto cared for Yüu and how much the relationship with him had to be kept secret. I was in love, on board and ready to dive in.

True to The Order fashion, this is a short book and I wish I knew how the author is always able to pack so much emotion, world building and just artistry into the novella’s because it and she are magic. So because this is short, I’ll not produce a fangirl ramble and keep this review short. By the Gods, I promise I will. Maybe? Who knows?
You learned to pick your battles when you loved a fighter.

Ĥaiatto is a healer, one who does not possess solitary magic but the ability to use magic to heal others. He is currently employed at The Lyliňg Fighting House as their healer and his main job is to heal fighters of the pit. When their top pit fighter, the unrivaled Yüuzuki Ōren landed on his table some three years ago, Ĥaiatto treats and falls hard for him and begins a secret but passionate relationship with the fighter.

There is always something about secret relationships that tugs at my hopeless romantic heart while also tearing it apart. The level of commitment to be with the one you love no matter the consequence lends a level of romance but then the fact that the commitment is hiding who they are to one another to everyone, is sad. Yüu and Ĥaiatto have figured out a good balance to be together and the tall, gangly and awkward healer often wonders if his feelings are returned from Yüu. When Yüu is brought in to be healed after his last fight and Ĥaiatto learns of a twist Yüu’s next fight, Ĥaiatto will do everything his can to save his lover and give them a chance at a future… together.

Oh man! I loved this one super hard. Ĥaiatto is an amazing story teller and the characters he meets to secure a future was a joy to read. I do wonder if we will get a book with the Grandmaster and the Vamper because I am sure there is something between them. But Ĥaiatto and his love for Yüu made me feel. To be honest, reading and I have been having issues but this book made me feel and feel hard. I was waiting for the punch to the feels moment and once I got it, they just kept coming and I was happier than a ten puckered owl.

Now Yüu, I am so thankful we get his backstory and how he came about to be fighter in the pits at The Lyliňg Fighting House. It’s heartbreaking but gives him such strength of character that when Ĥaiatto proposes they spend the rest of their lives together… well, read the book to experience that scene. Kay?
“This Yüuzuki, […] Who is he to you?”
“Everything. He’s everything.”

This was just so good. I was holding my breath toward the end and freaking out a little but then I danced in my seat when Eryssa shows up and then when we see her reunion with Caylii. Giddy would be an understatement. That epilogue was pure perfection and I love how sweet Yüu is with his healer.

I have to say the title makes me smile and when you read the book (Read.The.Book.) you’ll figure out why.

I’ll stop rambling now but just know, I want more. I’m so ready for more.

I did nail art for this cover!

I love Kasia Bacon's The Order universe. Somehow, she is able to develop an engaging story with complex characters and strong emotion in a minimal amount of pages. When I finish a book I feel both satisfied and left wanting more.
Ĥaiatto has such conviction, courage and a strong will to fight where Yüu cannot. Yüu has this level of tenderness that is unexpected from a prized fighter. They care for each other deeply and I loved all of it.
In this story we get a little more insight into the Order universe, outside of The Order itself. Laymen, magic and other citizens who are not soldiers, what they do and how they do it. I am intrigued by this additional information and I look forward to more books in this world.
If you haven't given Bacon a try, this one is fine to start with. It is technically part of a series, but it can be read as a standalone. That being said, you should really read this in order just to be immersed in this wonderful world.
