A playboy heir needs: a man to marry, right now.

After spending half his life dodging his duty to the crown, the rebel heir to the Rosavian throne has been told in no uncertain terms that it’s time to settle down. Prince Leopold has one month and a vetted list of suitable princesses, and he will announce his engagement during Rosavia’s Royal Ball. But Leo’s got his own ideas about what really suits him…

Royal Librarian Edvin Blom is good at not attracting attention. Shy and self-conscious of his stutter, he’s used to being overlooked and more than happy to stay in the background. At least, until the Crown Prince with a wild reputation shows up at the library’s new opening and decides to flirt with Edvin’s sister…

Edvin isn’t at all what Leo thought he wanted, but turns out to be everything he can’t stay away from. Edvin’s been burned by falling for someone out of his league before, though. And believing that Leo has really fallen for him? While Edvin’s drowning in his own doubts and insecurities, that might prove impossible… unless love gives them both a reason to come up for air.

Welcome to the tiny European country of Rosavia, where roses ramble over alpine slopes and princes fall for the men of their dreams. Every Rosavia Royals book happens simultaneously, so books can be read on their own, or in any order... but keep an eye out for familiar faces around the palace!

If you want a cuddly and happy story with zero angst and a sexy moment or two, this is the book for you.

Set in a modern-day fictional European country where monarchy still reigns, Up for Heir is a loosely Cinderella-inspired tale about a geeky librarian raising his four younger siblings on his own who meets his prince and is whisked off to the palace for a happily ever after.

Despite the adorablness, I had a few issues with this book:

Eddie, the librarian, is a bland character. He's a pushover, and I couldn't reconcile Eddie the guy who lets his nasty ex-boyfriend use him and Eddie who's supposedly strong and an amazing father figure to his brother and sisters. All Eddie did was stutter, giggle, and push his crooked glasses up his nose. He didn't seem smart or fun or much of anything, truth be told, which is why it was so hard to believe that Leo the prince would fall for him. Which brings me to my second gripe:

Leo realizes he's bisexual or at least bi for Eddie AND that he wants Eddie forever in approximately the span of time it takes me to decide what I'm having for dinner. I mean, this was Insta Love in all its glory, but it wasn't even remotely believable (and, trust me, I was wearing my rainbow-colored glasses the entire time).

And finally, the monologues, dear sweet baby jesus and all that is holy, the monologues about killed me. We got one line of dialogue followed by pages of meandering thoughts followed by another line of dialogue followed by MORE random thoughts. I swear more than half the book was a monologue. This was sooo tedious, I found myself skimming through much of it.

Despite all that, I was intrigued by Leo's brothers and may read another book in this multi-author series.

OMG!!?? I really wanted to love this book, but I just couldn't. Crown Prince meets shy librarian and falls in love!? It sounds like such a winner, but I barely finished. It was so incredibly boring. It was 50% in and the MCS had barely talked. All these inner monologues and ramblings instead of interaction. Then actual interactions are talked about after the fact in passing. There was too much telling and no showing. What about the asshole ex who almost ruined everything. I kind of feel like he could be charged with a crime of some sort!? What if the library would've caught on fire!? I have liked most of this author's books, but this was just not good for me.

This was not good.

I'm so disappointed, and I expected better from Stella than this. I've really liked all of the books I've read by her, and The Boyfriend Game is actually one of my 5-star reads. I love it. But this.... It was amateur hour in comparison.

Firstly, neither of the MC's were very likeable characters. Leo starts off by being kinda rude to his valet Hugo and comes off as a total jerk. Then when he and Edvin first meet, he tries to flirt with Edvin's younger sister, who is over ten years younger than him. I have no problem with age gaps but it came across as a little creepy to me, especially considering Leo ends up with Edvin and later in the book seems to treat all of Edvins siblings like his own siblings.

Similarly, though I did begin the book liking Edvin, by the time I'd finished it he just seemed completely naive and kinda childish. He also seemed to have a complete aversion to swearing. It was all "Oh Shizzle", "Piddle Sticks", and even "drizzling drat".

For God's sake, just say fuck like a grown adult! It's not even like Stella was trying to censor the book for a younger audience, because there is explicit sex in it. If you can have on page graphic sex scenes, you can throw in some F-bombs. I just don't get it!

Secondly, the writing was kinda boring too. The whole book was full of exposition, and sentences sometimes lasted pages, split up only by lots of commas and hyphens. It was to the point where I regularly lost focus entirely and couldn't even remember what the characters were doing or talking about! The whole thing was rambling. The characters inner thoughts often got so off topic to what was actually happening. I was honestly this gif of Chandler at multiple points.

I'd actually say there was more of the characters rambling inner thoughts, then there was actual dialogue between the MC's, and subsequently, I don't even know why Leo and Edvin fell in love. As far as I can tell they have absolutely zero in common, and they can't even really be put into the opposites attract category. Despite there being so much inner dialogue, there is nothing about what they actually see in each other. And yet, we're supposed to believe that a) Leo, a previously completely straight man, is suddenly into men, and b) Leo and Edvin are completely in love with each other by around 40%.

From about the 28% mark, I knew I wasn't going to love this book all that much (and it turns out, I didn't even really like it at all!). At 28%, I had my biggest issue with the book, but I guess it might not seem huge to other people. Leo and Edvin kiss for the first time, but other than their lips first touching, it's all off page. Again, this is the first time Leo has ever kissed a man. I expected to read some of his POV of the kiss, but there is nothing. It's all from Edvin's perspective. He just says something along the lines of "their lips touched, and it was magical" and then the chapter just ends. I turned the page, fully expecting the kiss to carry on in the next chapter from Leo's POV. But nope.... It's just fast forwards to several days later. I genuinely wanted to throw my kindle across the room.

To me, a first kiss is such a key scene for any romance novel, and especially for this book that's supposed to be a believable GFY/Bi-awakening. It's such an important part of any love story, and I just don't understand the authors decision to make it mostly off page. There was also several other key scenes that were missing in my opinion, including most of their first date, all other dates, all of their getting to know each other and general flirting. Basically... all of them falling in love. I love reading about two people falling in love with each other, and actually reading the tangible emotions of that on page. If you're looking for that, you ain't gonna find it here.

Also, there's a kinda sub-plot where Edvin's ex is complete asshole, but the guy gets no comeuppance. I disliked the guy so much, I wanted him to get some karma for all the shitty things he says to Edvin just to put him down. This guy even plays a major role in the climax of the novel, where he nearly ruins everything for the MC's, and nothing happens to the guy. It goes absolutely nowhere, and the whole thing was honestly unnecessary. It felt as though it was just shoved into a bare bones plot, with wildly underdeveloped characters, just to create some tension. In reality... all it did was make me mad.

Ultimately, I wanted so much more from this book, and maybe my expectations were too damn high, I don't know. I'm still going to read book 2 because HJ Welch hasn't written a book I haven't liked. It's just a shame that this was the first book in the series.

Straightlaced librarian laid out like a buffet in the back of a limo and angry at pants for existing because he wants to be laid bare. Fuckboy prince claiming, "I'll push for parliament to ban them."

Whole time Hugo the valet/put-upon chauffeur is at the wheel pretending nothing is amiss😂

Yes, PLEASE.

Calling fornication 'due diligence', Edvin you naughty little shit.

Frotting so good one of them had a love epiphany immediately afterwards.

I'll admit. This one surprised me. I got the audiobook series and figured it would be YA-ish so wasn't tempted to listen, until I did. And yeah, not YA.

Leo's valet aiding and abetting by setting up a daily standing appointment at the library since his prince had 'discovered a passion for literacy'.

💀

And henceforth calling it 'the literacy initiative`💀💀💀

Leo and Edvin were adorable. They both had that lightning bolt kind of instant attraction but Eddie was a lot less adept at hiding it. He still stammers around Leo till the end of the story.

My favorite bit though? Edvin didn't dither about with the whole 'independent man who don't need no man' shtick. He let Leo share his burdens.

I would have hated the idea of a 25 year old whose parents' untimely passing left him 4 siblings to raise (and pretty much effectively ended his social and personal life) pretending he didn't appreciate help.

What's the point of falling in love with a prince otherwise?

Edvin had been so bogged down by the minutiae of decisions for himself and his siblings in his everyday life that when the consensual power exchange thing happened in their sex life, it seemed so natural for them both.

And Leo. Leoooo.

Prince Detests Responsibility™ found himself an overwhelmed-by-life twink with an almost rabbit number of siblings and immediately snapped into focus, turning into an auditioning husband and father of the year. Very 'If he wanted to, he would' of Leo. Loved that for them.

Suddenly 'responsibility is a privilege not a burden' skskks I know his parents were IRRITATED. This long prayed for change wrought in the crown prince by a commoner.

Looool the Lord giveth and he taketh away.

This book did scratch an itch I've had for a romance where the royal IS the crown prince, BUT it's a queer normative world(I hope that's the right word) so there's no sliding down walls by the reigning monarchs or the general public at the relationship.

I want epic crash-outs.

No idea if I'll listen to the other books in the series but this one was definitely a winner for me.

This was a feel good story that made me smile from start to finish.

Eddie was just so cute and Leo was his perfect match taking care of him when he more often than not forgot to take care of himself.

Although I enjoyed the story overall, I could've done with less internal monologuing from or MCs and more story telling from the author. Nonetheless, it still tugged at my heart strings so I overlooked it after a while.

On to the next book!!

The cover was the only thing good about this book, 'nough said. Serves me right for being such a cover whore.

I was so looking forward to read this, what with a fictional crown prince falling for a nerdy librarian, and I was half expected to be swept away by gorgeous depictions of fairy tale settings and castles, landscapes and decadence. After reading it though, I would gladly take even the most absurd, overly worked description of cutlery.

I could look past the clumsy GFY trope in the form of a serial womanising playboy prince who ONLY dated women suddenly turning Bi. I could look past, and even adore a nerdy librarian with a stutter who was so damn insecure and unsure you wanted to hug him. But it all turned to crap when allllllllll that INTERNAL RAMBLING and OVERLY BAKED EXPOSITIONS started pouring out like a bad case of the runs. Can you imagine going through 20+ pages of internal monolouges and ramblings IN THE MIDST OF A SEX SCENE??? That was what did me in, right smack in the middle of the book, and I had to force myself to skim through the rest, instead of DNF-ing which I would have usually done, though that would have been more merciful on my poor, poor soul. One plus though, never had my eyes had that much exercise rolling all the way back. I actually think I sprained my eyes because I rolled them too much and too hard.

I actually did like and was starting to fall in love with both Leo and Eddie, but character development, there was NONE. By the midway point, Leo just started to come across as ridiculous and Eddie just came across as annoyingly childish instead of sweetly naive. And please, what was with the clumsy and downright pretentious caricature of Europeans and the way they speak? To be honest, she could have just written the dialogue in American English and we would have lapped it up just the same, if the story had been good.

Maybe the rest of the authors in this series should have read and vetted and selected a more fitting start to the series than this. Honestly, it left a bad taste in my mouth and I am going to write off the entire series because of just this one book. Pity, as the premise was one so worthy of delving more into.

I put the book away at 20%
It sounded really promising - a crown prince and a shy librarian, Yes, please. But soon enough I realized that the book just wasn't for me. There was so much inner monologue (which is normally fine) between dialogue utterances that you barely recognize the dialogue as such anymore. Which then in turn made the dialogue extremely boring to follow. There were scenes that weren't finished and the story just hopped to the next scene between the two MCs - so, there was no real story development, no endurance as to when the two MCs would meet again. Everything was offered an a silver plate which was plain boring - again.
And then there was Prince Leo who acted quite intrusive (straightening Eddies glasses without knowing him) from the start. Eddie finds it really amazing that Leo seems to be okay and patient with his stutter and cares for him but by that totally ignores the fact that he doesn't know boundaries and privacy (private visit after retrieving Eddie's address from god-knows-where; that's normally called stalking). Also Eddie was really annoying and stereotypical - maybe because of all the insights in his thoughts and worries we got to see. He was so insecure and a push-over, I really wished he was a stronger character.

So, to sum it up: neither story nor characters made me wanting to read on. The two stars are maybe for the idea, the very strange cat and the nice enough cover?!

This certainly wasn't what I was expecting, especially because I truly enjoy this author's other works. You could probably fill the actual dialogue from the entire story onto merely a handful of pages and the rest was an incredible amount of stream-of-consciousness type of inner monologue that went on forever and ever. The actual relationship bits were cute and I liked that Leo had his enlightening moments that were filled with actual feeling rather than just lusty thoughts and that Edvin finally found someone to love him for himself and to care for him as he lives to care for others. I can't say I was drawn to either man from the beginning, but I had a lot of hope that things would get better. Overall the world was interesting, the ending was wonderful, and there were some really good feels, but it just wasn't up to par with what this author can actually create.

Too cute!! Leo, bad boy royal and heir to the throne of Rosavia must announce his engagement. Trouble is he's too rebellious to meekly agree to his parent's list of approved women. If he's going to get married he wants to choose his spouse himself. In walks Edvin, the most adorably awkward librarian ever and his highness is totally besotted. I loved everyone!! Prince Leo was a doll, I can't wait to read about all his brothers! Very healthy amount of cat attitude.😼 And adorable Edvin completely deserved the fairytale romance that is this book! I love how he had a stutter but no one ever made a huge deal out of it. Some people had less patience for him, but it wasn't Edvin's defining factor or anything. Just a very small part of what made the whole man. I wanna live in Rosavia!!! I could learn to love blueberry pizza. Probably. It'd be worth it to have so many hot princes to drool over!

great, low angst read. a fairytale happily ever ever.

i like Leo and the way he talked! it was so.. charming and when he said those petnames just aaaaaah!!!

unfortunately, there was toooooo much inner monologue it was exhausting to read. as much as it very detailed, i think a scene took too long, about 5 pages?? yet it was still at the same scene and the same ramblings.

and and Eddie... i was expecting him to be.. more... but he was such a doormat here?? even during sexy times, i was waiting and waiting to be wow by Eddie but sigh, epilogue ended.

and that ex, Hans???? what happened to him??

i wanna see more drama, i was expecting it at the ball, or even any drama tbh, everything was so smooth sailing it wasnt satisfying.

at the end of it, it could have been shorter and better, but i still enjoyed it!

Great start

What a great start to a series. I love a great nerd/awkward book. Probably because that just described me. This was great. The thing I loved most was this didn’t take your classic drama turns. There was drama but not the classic. My stomach was clinching at certain times waiting for it, and it didn’t come. Which was so refreshing.
The writing was great, the smexy was so hawt, and the side characters where fun. Will be reading about the other Princes. This author is becoming a favorite of mine

Well, I read it.

Long run on sentences, often a paragraph in length. Over use of commas and hyphens in order to achieve those long sentences. And an absolute reluctance to swear.

The swearing cracked me up especially after explicit sex scenes. Shizzle? Really?

I read to the end but really with all the exposition you can skip most of the paragraphs.

3.5 stars, rounded down because of an unresolved issue in the book.

Prince Leopold, the Crown Prince of Rosavia, has to find a suitable bride before The Royal Ball, the celebration of 500 years of Rosavia. His parents, the king and queen, have watched him have his fun (he's a known playboy) and they're determined to have him settle down. His fiance will be announced at the ball whether Leo wants it or not.

This is where Edvin (Eddie) comes in. Leo is at a function at the Royal Library when he flirts with the wrong girl. ;) That would be Edvin's sister. Edvin, knowing Prince Leopold's reputation, puts a stop to it quick. For Edvin to say anything is unusual. He's shy and prefers staying in the background. Even so, he won't stand by and allow his sister to be taken advantage of by a sexy prince.

Leo completely forgets about the girl when he sees Edvin. Leo's never been interested in men before but he's fascinated with Edvin. So Leo makes up crazy reasons to see him after the event. It was cute watching him come up with new excuses to see Edvin.

This starts their unconventional relationship. I absolutely adored Leo. I had a problem with Edvin. Being shy and starstruck is one thing. Edvin took it all to a whole knew level. His internal monologue went on and on and on.... Every time I thought something was about to happen Edvin was thinking these long and drawn out (page after page after page) thoughts. I almost found myself skimming. I didn't, but I wanted to quite a bit.

I really enjoyed this book but I had a problem with something that didn't get resolved. I've since read all the others in the series so I know it didn't happen later. For that reason - because this specific thing should have been on page - I knocked off a star. To me, leaving something like that unresolved leaves me wondering if the author thought readers wouldn't notice?

This was a mixed bag for me, on one hand the story had some really sweet and tender moments, on the other hand it was completely unbelievable and annoying moments later.
Leo the crown prince falls in love with Eddie the nerdy Librarian and that blurb had me swooning right away. The problem is, that Eddie was not only a nerd but absolutely childish in his behavior, I really cannot see how he raised his siblings alone.
Leo is your typical prince, confident (and straight) and I just didn`t buy that he would fall for Eddie.
Unfortunately, the book didn`t convince me otherwise, I am not sure what they found in each other and I didn`t really care.
The HEA was nice and sweet but for me it didn`t save an otherwise lukewarm story, so this was an average typical KU book, okay while it lasted but nothing I would recommend to my friends.

Stella Starling has always been an author that I don't hesitate to read. This book, however, was a bit plain and it was missing something. First, Leo who has always been completely straight suddenly liked this geeky guy who works in a library. Everyone knows he is straight - and is mention how he slept with triplets right in the first chapter. Then, we see them becoming 'friends' in a sense but we don't see Leo truly talking about his feelings and the sudden interest in males. Not only that, but we also don't get much from Eddie who spends most of the time hesitating and double thinking everything. I feel we needed more building, the characters were very plain, I didn't get a sense of them or liked them. I wasn't rooting for them. The story was carried without feelings - in my opinion. I was so disappointed, I don't think I will be continuing the series.

I liked this, it was sweet and the MCs were great but it could have been so much better. The one word that keeps springing to mind when I think of this story is "wordy". There was so much that wasn't necessary, I found myself skimming a lot. One other niggle was all the internal dialogue. I wish the author had the guys talking to each other more rather than to themselves.

Super Sweet GFY involving a straight Prince being required to marry and a young stuttering librarian who takes care of his siblings.

Edvin Blom is a librarian tries to "save" his younger sister from the lecherous Prince Leopold, but what he does is turn the prince's attentions to himself. Prince Leopold, Crown Prince of Rosavia has been told by his parents that he must announce his Queen at the Rosavian Birthday celebration and provide him with a list of acceptable women. As Prince Leo is want to do, he rebels and comes across Edvin who he falls for.

This is a wonderful story of finding love when you didn't think it was possible and the love of family.

Prince Leo next in line for the throne meets shy stuttering librarian Eddie at the opening of the new library.
I loved the writing of this story. The way we got to know Edvin through his thoughts really bought him to life for me.
A sweet, romantic story of a commoner who believes he's not good enough and the crown Prince determined to prove to him that he's perfect just the way he is. All the happy feels reading this book.
Happily recommend.

I usually like Stella Starling books - there are two of hers that are constantly on my 're-read' pile, but this one was missing the usual spark I find in her books. Both main characters were one-dimensional, I didn't like either of them and didn't find this romance believable. I ended up skimming parts of this as the same things kept getting said over and over and over again.

I was so excited to read this but ended up being disappointed. As much as I love Leo and Edvin, their inner monologues bored me that I had to skim through most of them 😩. Also, why did Hans never get his comeuppance? He was such a jerk uggghhhh I wanted Leo to banish him to the dungeons or something.

Cosa c’entrano i mirtilli vi state chiedendo? Lo capirete leggendo.

This book had me cracking up so bad in different ways. My two favorite beings in this book, besides the MCs, were Leo’s brother Wren, and Leo’s cat, Treble, whom he pretends to hate. The only disappointment I had with this book, is I REALLY wished someone would have punched Hans. He deserved it.
Leo is known as the playboy of the royal children. He’s first in line for the throne and to be honest, he doesn’t want it. He’s also known as being a very straight man, until one day at the Royal Library opening, he meets a shy, stuttering beautiful man, who was doing his best to stand up for his sister. And it opened the floodgates for Leo. There was something so captivating about Edvin, that he couldn’t keep his mind off of him. And he set out to do anything necessary to get Edvin to spend time with him. But the problem is, Edvin has 4 other responsibilities, besides his job, that take up his time. And when they were supposed to have a ‘date’, Edvin had to cancel and Leo was determined to find out why. What he found was chaos and a man who was not only responsible, loyal and one heck of a brother, he found a man who was exhausted. And doing one thing he never thought he would, he jumped in with both feet and helped. Which led to many more dates and finally someone he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. But will Edvin be ok with being a royal or will his shyness and the media be the downfall of the relationship Leo wants so bad?
This story was the perfect fairy tale. It really was. It’s not obviously, but it felt kind of like a Cinderella story. But with much more fun. There are some funny characters in this story that just make everything that much better. Like Wren and Treble. But Edvin’s siblings have some personalities of their own that are hilarious, and then you have Leo’s valet, Hugo. It’s such a cast of characters that make up this book. That support these MCs, and it’s such a good read. It’s a great start to this series and I’m curious to how the rest of the brothers are going to be and what their stories are going to turn out like.
Edvin is the quintessential adorable man, that you just want to wrap up and hug forever. His shyness is adorable, his stutter even more so. He may hate it, but it’s part of his personality that is just so endearing. And I’m glad that Leo saw what he had as a treasure in Edvin. He’s just perfect the way he is. There’s so much to Edvin, that he was even making Leo himself, see things in a different light, and making him take his duties as the Crown Prince a whole lot more serious. And because of it, it was making him a better man. Sure, he screwed things up. Who doesn’t. Especially when they aren’t used to doing things on their own. But it just made these two perfect for each other. Because of who they are, they made each other better. They fit seamlessly and made each other whole.
It’s a sweet romantic story. I still wish someone would have punched Hans, but ah well. It’s a good fun book and the start of a good series.

This was so sweet and wonderful! This is the first book I’m reading in the Rosavia series, and if this is how the series is going to be, I can’t wait to read the rest!

Prince Leo is such a playboy. He is the heir to the throne and is told he has 30 days to pick a suitable mate and announce his engagement. Leo wants nothing to do with this and tries to buck the system every chance he gets. Then he meets shy, sweet, responsible, stuttering Eddie. He has never had any interest in men before, but one look at Eddie and he is a goner.

These two were so sweet together. Eddie had some confidence issues due to a horrible ex, but Leo was there to let him know how special he was at every turn. It really was a fairy tale come true, but Eddie deserved all of it.

I loved this.

This book was so right up my alley. The “bad boy” prince with the awkward nerdy librarian checks so many of my boxes. It was so sugary sweet and delightful, and I just want to spend more time with these two. I loved that there was no angst surrounding Leo’s bi-awakening. He was attracted to Eddie, and that was that, and it was glorious. I loved the nurturing aspects of their relationship, the humor, and the wonderful chemistry between the two. I do wish we would’ve seen Eddie’s ex get his comeuppance, but I like to imagine it happened off page.

~4.5 STARS~

Such a cute story. I loved Edvin’s stutter and how he didn’t let it stop him from what he really needed to say. Edvin and Prince Leo couldn’t be more different, but fit so nice together.

I was glad Prince Leo went after what he wanted not questioning if it was right or wrong just because Edvin was male.

Overall, I really enjoyed this story and the writing style. The author created a world I was easily drawn into and I cant wait to see what happens in the other stories in this series.

I almost gave up on this story after a few pages. Mainly because my initial impression of Prince Leo was less than favorable. Luckily, I stuck with it because once Edvin was introduced the story just got better and better. I loved Leo’s and Edvin’s interactions. I loved how Leo treated Edvin’s family. I loved his little cat Treble. If I had one thing that bugged me about the story was, I really wanted Hans to get his comeuppance, but alas that didn’t happen. All in all, a wonderful modern fairy-tale.

Up for Heir by Stella Starling is the first book in the Rosavia Royals Series. Each book is written by a different author.

Up for Heir was my first book by this author and I really liked it. Edvin, Eddie for friends and family, is so sweet and adorable. Leo is known as the playboy prince but Eddie helps him find his true self. Leo is a very caring person.

I loved Leo and Eddie. They were so sweet together.
