Daphne Olivier grew up in a small village in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. From an early age she read everything she could lay hands on—be it biography, fantasy, historical fiction, thriller, mythology, science fiction or the classics. Daphne's second novel, a suspense/romance titled, HER DANGEROUS INHERITANCE, was published by Melange Books under the penname, Flora Penn.

I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's a little over a year ago by an awful endocrinologist who gave me no information, cared nothing of my symptoms, and simply told me "give up dairy, soy, and gluten for a year and come back and see me and we'll test your numbers again" If I had read this book first, because there were lots of books and lots of websites, I would have a better idea of why she told me that and a plan for doing so. Instead I mentioned the awful doctor's advice to a friend who said, that sounds like the Whole 30 diet, which is what I did because a year felt ridiculous. Comparatively, Whole 30 is more restrictive and lasts longer by a week but the principles are nearly identical. I did like this this focused solely on Hashimoto's which, of course, was my reason in doing so. The recipes did not sound nearly as good as those in Whole 30, but the lack of pictures may have contributed to that too. I would have liked a follow up section on what to do when I didn't show any sensitivities to foods as I reintroduced them and where to go from there. If I knew someone newly diagnosed I would probably recommend this book in combination with Whole 30 just to get the information at the beginning of the book for why these foods specifically may affect you.

I have Hashimoto's Disease, and I can attest that your body experiences a lot of capricious highs and lows. (Well, not really highs -- more like normals and lows.) Your diet can affect this, and when I eat a lot of junk, I feel like absolute garbage -- exhaustion, brain fog, body aches, depression, anxious thoughts.

This book is good for those newly diagnosed who are trying to figure out which foods make them feel like garbage the most so that you can avoid them. It has easy recipes with ingredients you can find at the store, and a helpful guide to when to make them and when to eat them. Elimination diets can seem intense. It's a huge list of items you can't eat, and it can feel like the only thing you're allowed to eat that won't make you feel bad is blueberries and cauliflower.

These guides make it more manageable, less intimidating, and the fact that the author is a real medical professional helps.

Hang in there, Hashimoto's folks. Once you figure out your triggers, you can cut down on them. (I still eat a bit of breads/tortillas, dairy products, the occasional fast food. Learn how much you can handle.)

This is a good starting point for someone who has been diagnosed with hashimoto’s. It is a complex condition to manage and understand. The author does a great overview in the Hashimoto’s 101. She explains how the immune system works and the role your thyroid plays with your immune system. She goes on to talk about Hashimoto and your diet and how food plays a big part in your health.

Another section covers common triggers like dairy, soy, gluten, caffeine, sugar, and alcohol. Not all those foods are the same triggers for everyone. Some are food allergies, food sensitivities, and even nutrients play a huge role. The nutrients information was a first for me learning about it. It was enough information to get you informed in this section so you are prepared to research more and ask your doctor more specific questions. The information was explained in an easy to understand format.

Good information on the elimination diet and information on labs, medication, doctors, testing, and other information.

There are 3 weeks of shopping list and meal planning. There is a nice variety of recipes for every meal in this cookbook. The recipes are labeled for One Pot, Freezer-Friendly, and Next Level Elimination-friendly. The recipes provide variation, tips, and other information throughout. All the recipes are easy to make and the ingredients can easily be found at your local grocery store or health food store. The only drawback was in the recipes themselves. The font was a tad small and the blue color was a bit harder to read for me without glasses or good lighting.

Overall, this is a nice and informative cookbook for Hashimoto’s.

I received a copy of this product in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review.

I know the title indicates that this book is for the newly diagnosed, but I was first diagnosed with it in 1976 and have never found this info before! Through the years since then I developed a couple of other autoimmune diseases as well. I mention this because if the info in this book had been available to me I might not have developed them. In reading this book I find things that are useful to a number of people I know who do not carry a thyroid diagnosis and therefore have been treated for the very symptoms delineated here but with other kinds of pharmaceuticals. The first and most important step in outmaneuvering this autoimmune disease is doing an elimination diet. Allergy sufferers are all too familiar with this torture but I have not heard anyone describe the process in such helpful detail. The author takes one by the hand in the grocery store and the kitchen to learn what, why, and how. Then come the meal plans and recipes (TASTY). Coordination with a dietitian can come whenever available or desired and with a physician as needed. EXCELLENT resource.
I requested and received a free ebook copy from Callisto Media/Rockridge Press via NetGalley and then purchased a permanent copy.

I am not diagnosed with Hashimoto's but others I know are and I wanted to see how this diet differs from the AP and others that I have read about.

The author knows what she is talking about with the information as well as the wording she is able to comes across as knowledgeable and person readers will be able to connect with.

It is hard to know when to eliminate certain things from your diet and by cutting things off cold turkey it will cause a rebound effect as well as cravings.

The author gives readers a step by step process on who to eliminate certain food and why you might want to take them out of your diet.

The author does get a little preachy which depends on how you read and her voice inflections.

There isn’t much new in this book if you’ve done any amount of research into treating Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis with an Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) diet. However, the language focuses a lot on health and positivity and even phrases it as “foods to avoid for now” instead of a ‘No-no” list. The framing is helpful—it’s easier to think about avoiding tomatoes and beans for just a few weeks rather than forever. What is best about this book is the step-by-step mealplan, which includes scheduled meals to utilize leftovers from earlier in the week. Very beginner friendly and helps to incorporate the AIP diet into your life (temporarily, hopefully).

This book was unbelievable helpful! It’s easy to follow and breaks down the science behind everything. The elimination diet was simple to understand and easy to follow. I learned a lot and came away with a lot of useful recipes for going forward. Highly recommend if you’ve been diagnosed with Hashimotos! My thanks to the publisher for the gifted copy in exchange for my honest review/

A little bummed about this book. When following the elimination AIP, you do not have dairy and nightshades. They are usual triggers for Hashimoto’s. You have to slowly reintroduce these food groups to find out if you can have them or if you are going to be sensitive to them. Once you have ‘passed’ that, then this would be a great book of help

I was given the opportunity to read the Hashimoto's Diet for the Newly Diagnosed: A 21-Day Elimination Diet Meal Plan and Cookbook. I voluntarily chose to review this cookbook and my opinion is freely given.

The first four chapters of the book deal with the diagnosis of Hashimoto's, the introduction of a diet plan, a 21-day elimination diet, and how to move forward after the three weeks are complete. Hashimoto's, in simplistic terms, is the autoimmune version of low thyroid. This has implications for the whole body, including weight gain, sensitivity to cold, brain fog, dry skin, and digestive issues. The author goes through the important role of diet, as certain items can exacerbate symptoms. The elimination diet is a tool, providing valuable information as to the triggers that can make Hashimoto's worse. This guide section of the cookbook can help readers to prepare their kitchens and to know what to eat or avoid during the crucial elimination phase. Shopping lists and extensive meal plans are included, making the elimination diet section easy to use. The author has included the page numbers to dishes located later in the cookbook as reference.

As far as the recipe sections go, the author has set this part up in a logical fashion. Below, I have included the names of the aforementioned sections and some of the standout recipes.

Breakfasts: Coconut Quinoa Porridge; Apple-Carrot Breakfast Muffins; Chicken and Avocado Lettuce Burritos

Snacks: Sweet and Simple Seedy Granola; Zucchini Hummus; Cauliflower Buffalo Bites

Meatless Entrees: Curried Lentil Stew; Fiesta Black Bean Salad; Coconut Curry Over Cauliflower Rice

Seafood Entrees: Spicy Shrimp, Okra, and Tomato Stew; Chili-Glazed Salmon with Roasted Veggies

Poultry and Meat Entrees: Tandoori Chicken Stew; Chicken Spinach Meatballs Over Spaghetti Squash; Eggroll Soup; Lamb Shepherd's Pie; Unstuffed Cabbage Rolls

Staples, Condiments, and Sauces: Cauliflower Rice; Homemade Healthy Mayonnaise; Citrus Ginger Cilantro Dressing; Teriyaki Sauce; Avocado Sauce

There is a lot to like about the Hashimoto's Diet for the Newly Diagnosed: A 21-Day Elimination Diet Meal Plan and Cookbook. The menu planning and elimination guide can be valuable to those new to a diagnosis of Hashimoto's. One of the biggest drawbacks to the cookbook is the lack of photographs, as the visual element is so important. Overall, I would recommend this cookbook to those with Hashimoto's or with low thyroid in general.

This book basically just confirms that once you are diagnosed with Hashimoto’s you should start weaning yourself from gluten, dairy, soy, sugar, and alcohol. Your body is in a constant state of infection, and in order to relax antibodies a strict diet needs to occur. This is not my first rodeo.

What did I like? I’ve read numerous books on this subject and they all seem to reflect the same message. You need to make some changes to see an improvement in your health but you’ll likely be on medication for life. This is a good book but I like a more homeopathic outlook and I’ve added some supplements to my diet...like Ashwagandha to lower cortisol levels. Or Black Cumin oil to reduce inflammation in the body. I also like alcohol.... no help for that it seems.

Would I buy or recommend? As a cookbook ...this one barely has any pictures... and I need pictures. The information given though is solid, I agree that 21 days is not a lot to give but very little in introduction of foods maybe neglected here. I think if your a beginner this is definitely a start but keep in mind homeopathic books.

Thoughts for the author? The informative side is great but passing off recipes without pictures grinds on me. Just a bit more would have been great. One picture per chapter just feels cheap. The recipes themselves though were good. Many of them used arrowroot powder, not a known herb for me... so an explanation for that alone would of been nice. Five stars!
