Walt Simonson is an American comic book writer and artist, best known for a run on Marvel Comics' Thor from 1983 to 1987, during which he created the character Beta Ray Bill. He is also known for the creator-owned work Star Slammers, which he inaugurated in 1972 as a Rhode Island School of Design thesis. He has also worked on other Marvel titles such as X-Factor and Fantastic Four, on DC Comics books including Detective Comics, Manhunter, Metal Men and Orion, and on licensed properties such as Star Wars, Alien, Battlestar Galactica and Robocop vs. Terminator.
He is married to comics writer Louise Simonson, with whom he collaborated as penciller on X-Factor from 1988 to 1989, and with whom he made a cameo appearance in the 2011 Thor feature film.
Acts of Vengeance was the coolest idea when I was a teenager. A bunch of the big villains got together, tired of losing to their archenemies. So they mixed things up with all of the villains attacking heroes they'd never fought before. This contains the weakest of the Acts of Vengeance crossovers.
Fantastic Four #334-336 by Walt Simonson, Rich Buckler, & Ron Lim This was a disappointment. I thought Simonson's FF would be better than this. The FF head to Washington to testify before Congress about the Superhuman Registration Act. It's really boring for the most part. Then they keep getting beset by D-level villains who keep appearing in the courtroom in trench coats and hats. It's not good writing.
Dr. Strange, Sorcerer Supreme #11-13 by Roy and Dann Thomas, & Jackson Guice Dr. Strange is attacked by the Hobgoblin who was gotten a demonic upgrade. Then the Enchantress shows up. It's pretty good. Butch Guice's artwork is excellent.
Incredible Hulk #363 by Peter David & Jeff Purves The Grey Gargoyle comes to Las Vegas to seek out the grey Hulk. Peter David's run of the Hulk is lights out.
Punisher #28-29 by Mike Baron & Bill Reinhold Dr. Doom makes a bet with the Kingpin that he can kill the Punisher within 7 days. It's kind of dumb because Dr. Doom would kill the Punisher in about 3 seconds.
Punisher: War Zone #12-13 by Carl Potts & Jim Lee Bushwacker goes after the Punisher. Bushwacker has a crazy personality in this. Both trying to absolve those he's hired to kill of their sins and making "art" with his kills.
Marc Spector, Moon Knight #8-10 by Chuck Dixon & Sal Velluto Moon Knight teams up with the Punisher to fight Ultimatum and Flag Smasher. Surprisingly good.
Daredevil #275-276 by Ann Nocenti & John Romita Jr. Dr. Doom creates Ultron-13 and send it after Ultron. Gorgon and Karnak keep Daredevil alive but Ultron is defeated way too easily.
Power Pack #53 by Terry Austin & Ernie Colon Typhoid Mary arrives to mess with the Power Pack kids psychologically. Ernie Colon is the Erica Henderson of the 80's. His art is terrible.
Damage Control II #1-4 by Dwayne McDuffie & Ernie Colon The Damage Control miniseries are a lot of fun. They are about a company that comes in and cleans up the New York infrastructure after superpowered fights. Good, light-hearted fun.
FF #334 - 336 (w.
I didn't immediately realize that this is more of a companion book for the main Acts of Vengeance crossover event. That doesn't make the book inherent bad, but it does mean you don't have the main story and instead you get some pretty random side adventures of heroes facing off villains they haven't encountered with limited success.
The Fantastic Four stores were super silly and most of their villains were dealt with by their automated security system. Dr. Strange versus The Enchantress was pretty interesting but the Punisher vs Dr. Doom was quite silly. If anything, the inclusion of the Damage Control mini-series was a gem and fun example of quirky 90's Marvel bullpen humor applied to a comic.
To be honest, I only read the Ann Nocenti penned Daredevil story. That’s the reason I borrowed this from the library. Ms. Nocenti has never failed to have an interesting, imaginative situation for our heroes and this is no exception.
Daredevil vs. (the 13th version of) Ultron? With the Inhumans and a mysterious person just called “Number Nine”? Yeah! I wish it was more than two issues.
I can’t speak to the rest of this compilation, but my fellow fans of Ann Nocenti will want to check this out.
Now while I may enjoy the overall Acts of Vengeance storyline ... this trade in specific was a tough read. It was a weird smoosh of the dark titles like Punisher and Moon Knight with the super goofy titles Power Pack and Damage Control.
