San Diego Marines #5

Memories of You

Rate this book

A mind might forget but a soul remembers everything…

When you get married, you make so many vows.

For better or for worse. I’m a Marine with a wicked scar from the 50-cal round that almost took me out, so check that box.

For richer or for poorer. We’ve been together forever, me and Cat, so check that one too.

In sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, until death do us part.

If I’d known the sickness part had the power to do us in, I would have laid down some prep work. I would have come home earlier and stayed up later, spending hours memorizing her laugh and tracing the patterns of her curves.

The car accident might have taken my wife’s memories but she’s alive and she’s physically whole. The fact that she thinks we’re broken up from a fight we had ten years ago means I have a lot of ground to cover in a short amount of time.

But how do you convince someone they love you as much as you love them? How do you expect them to honor the vows you remember making but they don’t? And to what lengths would you go to try?

Memories of You is a sweet romance told from alternating POVs, set in the world of The San Diego Marines. Each book can be read as a standalone but are fun to read in order.

Travis is Awesome!

First I have to say that this series really should be read in order. There is so much character cross over and history between them that you will feel lost if you go out of order.
I enjoyed this story and I especially enjoyed Travis in this one. He was so kind, supportive and so patient. As Cat tried to figure things out, she found that Travis was the most consistent part of her life. He was what he claimed to be.
This group of friends is awesome. It's always fun when they are together. I'm glad I came into this series a bit late because it means I don't have to wait between books. I'm excited for the next one!

Romance, clean, contemporary; Series, but stand alone read
Travis and Cat's continued story was a fun read! More of a 3.5 for me as a reader, light romance. Their feelings, and Travis' devotion as Cat tried to figure out her family life, her memories, and of course, her feelings for Travis when she doesn't remember the present, and only has the past as her guide. Nice continuation of other story lines from past books, although not necessary to read them to enjoy this novel. Fun series!

It’s been years since I read this, and this reread was every bit as sweet! Jess’s books made me fall in love with the Marines. I adore the camaraderie, the banter, and seeing the world through military life. And I’m a huge fan for Brooks and Cat—fighting for love as an already married couple is one of my favourite things! 🥹

Entertaining amnesia plot

Cat and Travis Brooks have been married for 10 years when Cat's car is hit by a drunk driver. She is not injured anywhere except for a severe blow to the head, but it has caused her to have retrograde amnesia. She has forgotten the entire 10 years that she and Travis have been married, and the doctors tell her she may never recover her memories.

This book is a fun homage to the 2012 amnesiac, romantic drama, The Vow. Cat and Travis appear as subcharacters in multiple books in this series. It was fun to experience them in their own story. Both of them are highly sympathetic characters. It is also an intriguing and uncommon plotting choice in a romance novel to have the protagonists be a married couple, whose marriage has been imploded by a major health emergency.

This author is known for writing "sweet", sex-free romances, and this novel is definitely of that type. It could also be considered a Christian romance. There are frequent references to the Christian faith of the two protagonists. This is an unusual occurrence for this author, who is not known as a Christian romance writer. I have not noticed a similar religious theme in any of the 10 or so other romance novels I have read by her.

Memories of You is the first book that I have read by Jess Mastorakos and it was simply amazing! I liked it so much that I am now reading the whole series. Memories of You is the fifth book in Jess Mastorakos San Diego Marines series. US Marine Travis Brooks is living a good life, he has a job that he loves and his wife by his side. But a bad car accident changes everything. Cat wakes up from the accident with post-traumatic amnesia, and she has an incomplete memory of their relationship. Catherine Brooks can’t remember the last eight years and she has no idea why her ex-boyfriend would be sitting by her bedside. Will Cat and Travis’ marriage survive Cat’s lost memories?
Cat was a strong woman and she stood by her husband while he served in the Marines, she was content with her life. But the accident changed everything. She no longer remembered her husband and her life felt out of order. I liked Cat and I felt bad for her, her life felt all out of whack. She couldn't remember her husband and she didn't understand what was going on. However she also knew in the back of her head that her husband loved her and he was worth fighting for. Cat learned to find herself as she tried to remember her life.
Travis was a sweetheart, he loved Cat so much and he really wanted to make their relationship work. I really liked how he didn't try to push Cat, but instead he just tried to love her at her own pace. It was so hard for him to give her space, because he truly loved her and he wanted to be with her. He worked at his marriage, but he was also struggling with coming to terms that he may never get the “old Cat” back.
It was such an interesting concept and I really liked the development of the story. Travis and Cat really loved each other, but they had to figure out how to live with Cat’s lost memories. They not only had to figure out how to work through their marriage but they had to deal with Cat’s unreasonable parents and figure out their life goals. It was hard work as they learned what it meant to be married all over again. Cat had to learn to trust Travis and Travis had to be patient with Cat.
I really enjoyed reading Memories of You! I am super excited to read the other books now, I can’t wait to read about the Cat and Travis’ friends. I would definitely recommend this book. Memories of You is a clean, Marine romance

Wow! I have never before read a romance novel where memory loss is the main focus so this was new to me. I will say it felt super heavy at the beginning and wasn't sure how long it would take me to finish it or if I was going to be able to finish. But once I really I dug into the story, I just flew through the book quickly and couldn't put it down. This story probably hit me the most emotionally out of all the books in the series. It was still great though.

Brooks and Cat are a married couple you get to meet early on in the San Diego Marines series. Then you get to see them again several times throughout the other books. Memories of You follows their story after Cat is in a terrible car accident and forgets the last 10 years of their lives together, including the fact they are happily married. Last she remembers, they had just broken up and were not on good terms. Brooks has to convince her to stay with him after leaving the hospital and help her remember how much they loved each other.

I felt myself just internally screaming at Cat to not go home to her parents after the accident. Her mother just came across so evil and manipulative that it really angered me that she was trying to pull Cat and Brooks apart. Once I could get that part, the story was so sweet. Brooks of course had his moments where he struggled to keep his cool, but overall he was so sweet and patient.

Memories of You includes the amnesia trope, and I thought it was done really well! Brooks and Cat were side characters in the previous books of the series, so I enjoyed seeing them as main characters in this book.

I really liked that we got to see glimpses of them from the past when they first fell in love, and watching them together as a married couple was so much fun! Brooks deals with a lot in this book because he knows their past and how his wife was in the present day. But Cat has lost her memories of a whole decade because of an accident, and the last thing she remembers about him isn’t very flattering. I really enjoyed reading about them and I sped through the book to find out what would happen.

Jess Mastorakos is fast becoming one of my favorite authors for when I need a comfort read. Her writing style is engaging, the characters are interesting, and I just love reading her books!

Every woman needs a Travis Brooks! He is the sweetest husband! He supports his wife desire to create a photography business and he even respects the fact that she doesn’t remember them being together. He gives her the bed and sleeps on the couch to make her feel more comfortable. He still has a hard time with her having amnesia but he is an amazing man!

I love not only that the series is a sweet, clean romance, but, as a native San Diegian and a child of a couple who started out dating as a corpsman-in-training and pretty SDSU coed, that it features military couples. This is my favorite in series so far, selfishly because it's based out of MCAS Miramar and I grew up just minutes away from base back when it was NAS Miramar. Though my dad was in the reserves by the time of their marriage, my parents were just like these young couples. They too bonded with several other young couples, one of which was an active duty Navy couple. When one of the mom's broke her foot during her husband's tour in Vietnam, it was my dad that got her to the hospital while my mom watched over their combined kids, and that was how it was and has always been. Supporting each other thru thick and thin. The women have stayed the best of friends over the years - friendships depicted in this book really do happen and they become life long.

Another reason this is my favorite to date is that it was a chance to enjoy getting to watch a couple fall in love again! As cute as the couples are in the previous books of the story, it was a nice twist to have a slightly older, more mature couple to root and cheer for. I was so relieved when Cat finally decided to stay in Cali after her release from the hospital! I was worried there for a minute ;) It was interesting, too, to get to see her life unfold from her own perspective of dealing with her memory loss and trying to put the pieces together. Her questions and frustrations over the loss of the relationship with her mom, the change in her passion to pursue photography, their struggle with infertility, their separation during training - I was #teamBrooks the whole way.

It was nice to see the addition of the faith element but I love that the series has always been sweet and clean even without it, which is not super common.

Annnnddd...super excited for the next book!! The epilogue was a terrible tease in the worst way! I cannot wait to meet our next MCAS Miramar marine!

This heartwarming romance is a fabulous addition to the San Diego Marines series by Jess Mastorakos. This story centers around Cat and Travis. They have been married for ten years when Cat is in a horrible car accident that leaves her with amnesia. The last thing Cat remembers is Travis breaking up with her and going off to boot camp when she was 18. This beautiful story is about finding their way back to the love they share in the midst of Cat having no memory of the life they have built together. Travis' devotion and patience with Cat makes him such a swoonworthy hero as if being a Marine wasn't already enough to do just that. This can definitely be read as a standalone. However, those who have read the rest of the series will enjoy updates on the couples from the previous books in the series.

I was given an advanced copy of this story from the author. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.

Memories of you is a must read! It's one of my favorite books, hands down. It was gut wrenching at times but that made the good times (especially the happily ever after) even better. This book took me on such an emotional rollercoaster and made me keep turning page after page until I was finished with the book. I found myself absolutely heart broken for Brooks and Cat and what they've lost. They are essentially starting over, and Brooks warmed my heart with how patient and kind he is with Cat as he gives her time and space in hopes that she will feel comfortable with him again. Brooks has to leave for training before they've truly found their feet and is worried that he won't have a wife when he returns home, especially with her mother conspiring against them. I rooted for them every step of the way and literally squeeled with excitement while reading the epilogue. I cannot wait for the next book!

All the feels

Definitely a must read. (Also, read the other books in the series. The supporting cast is there.)

I had no idea how this was going to go down. But I loved how Ms. Mastorakos handled it. Especially the epilogue!!!

I love this groups of characters. And even though the guys are marines, their stories are all different. Which makes it fun and gives the stories more depth. If you're looking for military stories about "soliders" and tome served without any actual knowledge of military life, these books are not for you. I love the authenticity Ms. Mastorakos provides.

Wow.

The concept of this story was huge to deal with, let alone working on my messed-up feelings for having Brooks and Cat - characters whom I've loved for several books now - in such a state!

Cat's car accident was awful, but then to have her forget all of her wonderful memories of Brooks? I teared up for him a few times. Such an emotional story.

As usual, Ms Mastorakos has outdone herself and written another gripping, emotional and heart-wrenching tale. This had a similar 'vibe' to Mills & Liv's book because of the angsty emotions, not to mention my sudden shock in discovering their relationship change in the beginning of the book.

So good! Read this series! 😊

This was a really sweet story. I liked the communication between Travis and Cat. How caring and patient Travis was and how open Cat was to finding out how they've lived and loved each other over the years she doesn't remember. She seemed to trust what he said, but also needed to figure out things for herself. And Travis let her do that, even though he might've been a little reluctant sometimes (because he knew what happened in the past), he still let her figure things out on her own and supported her wishes. They learned to love each other again and build new memories together. Very cute story.

This is my sixth book I have read (and first to review because I just learned about Goodreads), and I absolutely loved the story! This story contained the perfect amount of romantic suspense, married with the emotions that would likely and psychologically occur from such a tragic event. The details that Jess provides so explicitly, regarding the various realms of Marine life, are captivating and understandable all at the same time, especially when you come from a background completely void of military life. With each book, she writes in a way that gives me so much more respect for Marines.

Another awesome visit with our San Diego Marine family

Faith, family, second chances and trust are the main themes of this story as we get Brooks' andCat's romance this couple has been through a lot over the years, but they've always had faith to get them through. Will they hold on to that when Cat loses her memory and her parents, especially her mother takes advantage of the situation and tries to break them apart -again? Will Brooks and Cat find a way to be themselves in this new stage of life with not only Cat's amnesia but also new orders and other news?

A friend recommended this book, and since it was available through Kindle Unlimited, I thought I'd try it out. I enjoyed reading it. It is well-written, and the amnesia trope is handled very well. If you like military romance, you should really enjoy this whole series. I thought the author did a great job in explaining the setting as part of the story - it didn't feel stilted or more information than the reader needed.

Sweet story about loyalty and faithfulness

Sweet story about staying true to your vows and just being a good person. I like the snappy interactions between the main characters, Cat and Travis, and between their friends. Even though he was a rough and tumble military man, Travis was all gentle and loving with Cat. Even though she lost some memories, Cat was willing to work through her struggles without being all needy and dramatic. Very satisfying conclusion.

I am so looking forward to the next book in this series to come out. I think I have said pretty much all I could say about this series. Even though this may be my least favorite, even though it is great, in the series, I still loved it. I wish there would have been more info on Cat's memory loss. I so loved that this was a clean romance and it was just what I needed it.

Second chance with a twist

I loved everything about Catherine and Travis/Brooks. A fun twist on a second chance. His frustration at her condition was so realistic; I wanted to hug him!
She was close to perfect, in a damaged kind of way.
This was the first book I read by this author and it made me want to read all her books!!

This did not go how I expected at all! When I saw that cat and brooks were getting the next book, I was confused because they're already married. Then the title hit me. But it still was different than I assumed. I loved this one. It about broke my heart putting myself in their position. I'm talky enjoying this series, I can't believe I'm almost done with it

I knew this one was gonna be hard to read at times, and man it hurt me to see how broken Brooks was when Cat lost the last 10 years of her memories, plus poor Cat was so scared and lost. 😭 I really like that she chose to continue living with him anyway and learn to love him again. Their story was so sweet! 😍

This one really tugged at my heartstrings. How life can change so quickly! A knock to the head in an accident and Cat loses 10 years of memories. Travis has to win her back and remind her why they were so good together. Luckily, they have a great group of friends to rely on.
This series just keeps getting better and better.

Very enjoyable story!

Cat and Travis (Brooks) have been married for ten years. Adorable couple and very much in love. A terrible accident happens and Cat has memory loss of their past ten years. Wow, how do you handle something like this. This story is so interesting and hard to put down.

so glad it ended well

As a young wife who had to deal with in-laws that didn’t support my husband and I’s marriage (not sure if it was an age reason or that I wasn’t snobby) I can feel the pain of Cat’s own mother not supporting them even 10 years later. I only made it to 3 years with his PTSD from Afghanistan.
